    The print shop, which

    ha s

    been our

goal for a year and a half , began operat ing

December 1. As we think of the possibil

ities of reaching th e lost and strengthening

    the Christians through printed

    material

    we

get more and more excited. There is one

    correspondence course now being

    used,

    but

    we need a full

    range

    of materials to comple

ment an d reach out beyond the personal

    work

    already

    being

    done.

    The setting up of

    t he print shop

    ha s

    been

    a

    real

trial of patience. It took us

    about

    five weeks to ge t t h e p ri n ti n g equip

    customs.

    When we go to

    Belem

    to buy

    supplies

    for building, it is

    likely

to take al l day just to

    ge t

    a few things.

    Then

    there ar e

    other

    things

    to do. There

    is

    teaching,

    churches.

    or two. There

    have

    been many

    long

    al l

    working.

    Besides

    digging

    a well, reconstructing

    the

    printshop

    building somewhat, and com-

pletly rewiring the building, we had to

Joyce Mason, Ruth Lewis and I visited

    the town of Urucara,

    Amazonas,

    in

    October.

We arrived by r iver boat about 8:30 a.m.

one day. The whole town turned out tomeet

    the

    boat,

    as is the

    custom.

    It is a

    pretty

town, especial ly at night when the elec

tricity is on and the lights shine on the

    r iver. The

    first

person I met was one of

    the

    Catholic priests,

    who is a Canadian

and speaks English. The pr ie st s and the

    missionaries

    are

wel l a cqua in ted, and

    we

have good opportunities to witness to them.

We did not stay in Urucara very

    long

    before we

    headed

    for Manaus to buy food

    and other

    supplies . This

    tr ip took 26 hours,

    and 1

    di d

    not

    enjoy it .

    After

    almost

    two

days without a shower or drink of water

    we were

    anxious

    to find a

    place

    to

    stay,

Finally we found a l it tle place, but after

a night with mosquitoes and mice we

    looked

    for

    something

    else,

    and

    found an

    air-conditioned

hotel for a reasonable pr ice.

Then the shopping began. Dale Mason,

    Joyce s father,

    bought an aluminum

    boat,

    which he ha s found

    really

    cuts down on

    traveling time in evangelizing.

    We

    bought

enough food for two months. The next day

Joyce and I explored the city and found

lots of bargains, and a big fan. Although

    Urucara

    has

electricity only 8 hours a day

    the fan

    would

    be a big

    help.

    recently studied the fundamentals of

they wanted to find some place within

    where

    they

    could put

    their

    knowledge

to us e. They came upon a new suburb that

had sprung up almost overnight near

    People

    had

    this area

    Internship What it Con Mean

    The

    word intern to

    most p eople

    brings

to mind an apprentice of sor ts . This

    i s th e idea 1 have of

    a n i nte rn

    one who

    is

    just

    beginning. This

    is

    what 1 consider

    myse If.

    Firs t

    of

    all ,

    this

    means

    that

    an intern

    has

    to learn

    the language.

    It

    requires

    no

    little amount

    of

    time,

    an d

    sometimes

    b ecomes v ery unpleasant . Nevertheless,

very little study means very little talking,

and very little t al king means the people

will find o ut very lit tle abo ut th e Lord. So

    being

    a

    d il igen t s tudent

    is

    necessary.

    Second, there is much

    to

    learn about

t he people. No amount of description by a

missionary compensates for f ir st hand

    information. When you se e

the p eo ple d ay

    aft er day

    and l iv e

    with their

    hardships and

joys it is impossible not to

    want

    to give

    them a better way of

    life

    in Christ Jesus.

    Third,

    you

    ge t to

    se e exactly

    what

    a

    missionary does,

    an d how.

    The bes t

    thing

    by Allen Kisner

    is that you

    ge t

    to do your

    share

    too. This

type of program stops the guess work. It

    also

    gives the

    intern valuable information

    and experience for

    his

    own work.

    Of

    great

importance is that the int ern

can help others come to the field. He

    can

    have

    valuable information fo r others

    when

    he returns to th e

    States

    information tha t

    is

hard for interns to g et , s uch as the cost

of housing, medical expenses , eat ing,

what type of prepara tion to have

    etc.

    This

    is from

    the intern s point

    of

    v iew, and

    not

    that

    of an experienced

    missionary

    who

    tends to overlook

    these things.

    fter

    th e

    f i rs t four

    months of

    th is

planned two-year internship, 1 am happier

    t ha n when

1 f ir st came. 1 am also

    looking

    forward

    to

    seeing

    a

    lo t

    of

    lo st s ou ls

    won

    for Christ.

    This

    The chur ch in

    Jurunas

    was

    started

    in

    April

    by Richard

    Robison.

    When he

    returned

    to th e

    U.S.

    on furlough,

    Paul

    Lanham took

    it

over upon hi s arrival in June . Presen t ly

there are twenty members , about half of

    whom are

    boys

    aged

    ten

    to

    fifteen

    years.

    Jurunas

    is a

    section

    o f B el em

    located

on t he o ther side of the city from the other

    churches, and has

    a population of

    35,000

    to 40 000. Very

    l i tt le evangelical

    work is

being done. There is a smal l Seventh Day

Adventist Church a small Assembly of God

    congregat ion, and

    recently

    the Jehovah s

    Wi t n e s s e s s t a r t ed a work t he r e ll t h e s e

ar e weak, s truggl ing congregat ions. The

    area

    is in vast

    spiri tual darkness.

    It is a

needy community and Christ is the on ly

    answer for

    th e

    sickness that engulfs t he

suburb. Pray for the new congregation and

    for t he numerous

    young

    boys. It h as been

    found

    that

    many children

    of

    non-Christians

leave t he chu rch. These boys are active

    an d

    zealous,

    and have

    made

    their enthu

    siasm

    felt in the area.

    Pray

t ha t th ey may

    so

    PW L

You hardly ever win a soul from the

pulpit down here. If you really wish to

ful fil l th e G rea t C ommi ssio n of our Lord,

the most efficient way to do it is by teach

ing people at their own homes. This way

    the

    Lord s

    message is slanted more speci

    fically,

    and

    besides,

yvu do not ttec d to

worry about the formal ity of a rou tine four

    point sermon.

    Another advantage of teaching here

    is

    th e

    fa ct t ha t

    one

    can r each

    more

    than

    just

    th e

family on whom he calls. As soon as

    the next door neighbors

    see

    the missionary

    go into

    someone s

    house , they follow

    right

after him and join the study.

    About a month

    ago, as

    1

    was calling

    in

    some

    homes. 1 met a

    very sweet,

    elderly

    widow,

    Adelaide

    Gomes,

    who lived

    in a

humble mud hut al l by her se lf . She was

    quite happy to

    invite

    me in ,

    an d

    to listen

    to

    what

    1 had to

    say.

    I

    told

    her

    the parable

    of

    the prodigal son,

    and about the birth of

    Christ.

    3y the

    expression

    on her face, 1

could se e how much sh e was enjoying our

    encounter.

    Before I stepped out, she

    made

    i t

    c lea r

th at s he wan ted me t o r et ur n An

    appoin tment was

    set.

    To my

    surprise,

    the

    next time

    1

    came

    over

    to see her,

    sh e had

    a next-door neighbor

    there

    with

    her,

    Mr.

Guilherme Silva by name, whom sh e

    had

    especially

    invited

    to

    listen

    to my

    Bible

stories. By my t hi rd

    visit,

    I

    could

    feel the

    Holy

    Spirit

    working on

    those

    two

    precious

    souls. I

    needed

    to come back there

    only

five t imes, a ft er which t hey both came to

    the church house in order

    to

    confe s s

    publicly

    the ir fai th

    in Jesus,

    and

    to

    obey

    His

    commandment

    through baptism.
