The First Day of SchoolThe day began with Upper School cheerleaders and football players welcoming underclassmen and parents back to campus for the new school year. After finding their classrooms, meeting their teachers, and getting acclimated to their new schedules, students in all grades were treated to a bowl of frozen yogurt provided by Cold Snap in Fairhope. It was a great way to end the first day of school!

Senior ChallengePresident of The University of Alabama Dr. Judith L. Bonner spoke to Upper School students and parents at Bayside’s annual Senior Challenge on August 23. Jo Bonner, Vice Chancellor for Government Relations and Economic Development for The University of Alabama, introduced the students to Dr. Bonner, who shared how her experiences in education and in life led to her current role as President of The University of Alabama. She urged students to reach for their goals by following their own unique paths and by focusing on mile markers instead of scoreboards.

Senior ConvocationOn September 24, Bayside held Senior Convocation, a tradition of calling together the Bayside family in a formal assembly for the public purpose of recognizing our seniors as leaders. This year speaker Mildred R. Johnson, Associate Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, encouraged seniors to excel and to realize that much is expected of those to whom much has been given.

College Admissions ForumBayside hosted a community “Navigating College Admissions” forum for parents and students (grades 7-12) in Mobile and Baldwin County on September 24.

With over 150 in attendance, the program provided information on issues related to the application process, beginning the selection process, public v.

private institutions, NCAA recruiting, paying for college, standardized testing and the transition to college. Session facilitators brought their expertise from Bayside Academy, The University of Alabama, Spring Hill College, University of South Alabama and Virginia Tech.

Brain Power PerformancesBayside held a series of Brain Power performances for students in kindergarten through 6th grades throughout the school year. The series provided a monthly venue for students to experience presentations given by accomplished musicians and artists, and sometimes the students were invited to perform. Through Brain Power performances, students learn proper etiquette for the theater and the gallery.

Annual Upper School Club FairVirtually every student organization on campus took part by setting up their own booth in the Lorna Huey Art Gallery to pitch their club’s goals in the largest and most enthusiastic installment of Bayside’s club fair to date. New organizations such as the Japanese Culture Appreciation Club and the Bayside Fishing Club displayed their own tri-folds and props to compete alongside traditional clubs like the Key Club, Boys’ and Girls’ Service Clubs, and the Art Guild.

33rd Annual Grandparents’ DayBayside welcomed more than 500 grandparents to campus on October 16. Students in grades pre-k through 6th led their grandparents on a tour of their classrooms, introduced them to their teachers and friends, and showed off the projects that they had been working on. During the event, the Thomas F. Johnson Family Library hosted its annual book fair, “Dr. Seuss,” attracting crowds of grandparent visitors.

Fourth Grade Indian DayBayside’s 4th grade held Indian Day on October 18. Special guest Mr. Butch Fuller of Briarsfield, Alabama, who is of Creek Indian descent, traveled to Daphne

and spent the night before his presentation in a tent he pitched on the Bluff.

Students learned to make cording (rope); to build a fire using pine straw, charcoal (made from cotton), a striker, and a flint; and enjoyed an authentic meal of stew, roasted corn on the cob, and fried bread served by parents and grandparents. They also listened to several Creek Indian folk tales.

Pine MountainOne of the unique programs at Bayside is the 34-year-old traditional junior class trip to Pine Mountain Settlement School at Pine Mountain-Harlan County, Kentucky. This trip is one of service and class bonding. The Pine Mountain Settlement School exists to serve people in the local community. It celebrates, interprets and promotes the cultural heritage of central and southern Appalachia. Over the years, Baysiders have contributed weatherization supplies, served as field workers, provided technological equipment, hosted Pine Mountain instructors to provide training and sponsored a little league baseball team. While on site, students have the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of Kentucky, take a break from the modern world of technology, learn traditional arts and crafts, and come together as a close-knit group to form memories that last a lifetime.

Christmas TogetherChristmas Together was started by our very first Headmaster, David Smith. When Bayside initially opened, it was 1st through 8th grades. As the year progressed, the teachers made sure that the oldest and youngest students interacted, and at Christmas Together, each 8th grader presented a small tree to his or her assigned 1st grader.

Bayside welcomed over 500 parents, alumni and friends for the two-part Christmas Together program on December 13 in the Pilot Center Theatre.

Program highlights included the juniors singing "Amazing Grace" upon their return from Pine Mountain, the senior class rendition of “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” lighting of the family candle, alumni candle-lighting ceremony, Art Guild banners, alumni Christmas ornaments, and the presentation of Christmas trees.

Hall of FameInductions for the newly merged Athletic Hall of Fame and Academic and Professional Society were held in late January. Inductees were Dr. Tara Griffin '94, Lt. Col. (retired) Tripp Howard '82, Captain Peter McGavin '02, Stephen Mills, Jr. '81, and Carson Rockett '03.

100 Days of SchoolBayside’s Early Childhood Center celebrated the 100th Day of School on February 7. Pre-k students brought collections of 100 items to school to measure, weigh and sort. Kindergarten students brought collections of 100 items that could fit into water bottles and created hats adorned with 100 items of their choice. In addition to other activities involving the number 100, the kindergarten classes had a 100th Day Hat Parade around the Bayside campus.

1st Grade Shakespeare Play1st graders performed in “The Life and Times of William Shakespeare” on March 28. The play has been a Bayside production for 16 years. Fairhope actor Graham Timms wrote the play from a book. Scenes from Julius Caesar, Hamlet, and Romeo and Juliet were added by Bayside teachers. 1st grade teachers Linda Lott and Tootsie Bryant helped direct the play. Costumes were designed by some of the students’ grandparents.

Bayside Parents’ AssociationThis year, BPA raised more than $20,000 during the 2013-2014 school year through the annual magazine sales, uniform resale, Target REDcards and box tops program. The funds supported teacher grants and Teacher Appreciation Week, classroom enhancements, and the purchase of three new benches for the Early Childhood Center and 1st & 2nd grade building. The BPA also hosted the annual Welcome Back Tea and the Mentor Moms Luncheon and spearheaded the Giving of Thanks Canned Food Drive.

Commencement on the BluffOn May 17, Bayside’s graduation ceremony began with the bell ringers, sounding the Admiral’s Bell 64 times—once for each graduating senior. Held on the Bluff each spring, the procession began with the juniors. The Board of Trustees, faculty and staff followed the Class of 2015. The procession culminated with the junior marshals, who were the four juniors with the highest gradepoint averages, and a bagpiper leading in the graduating class.

Valedictorian Bowen Spottswood and salutatorian Katherine Ham addressed their peers and the more than 800 in attendance. Faculty-written verbal portraits highlighting students' individual experiences and contributions to the school and community were read as each graduating senior received his or her diploma.

Bayside's graduates this fall will attend 25 different colleges and universities in 12 different states.

State Chess Champions The Upper School Chess Team won the Alabama Scholastic Chess Team State Championship at Montevallo University! Team members were: freshmen Steve Chen and Trent Kannegieter, senior Keegan Cort, and sophomore Philip Dobbins. This was the Admirals’ second title in three years and fifth title overall. All of the Admirals’ chess titles are 6A titles. BA Today Wins Press AwardBAToday received a first-place rating in the American Scholastic Press Association’s 2013-2014 annual Newspaper Review and Contest.

Davidson’s Invitational Model United NationsJunior Milin Vira received the Chair’s Award for his work on the Security Council at Davidson’s Invitational Model United Nations. Ten Bayside students participated in DIMUN. The goal of DIMUN is to teach students the fundamental operation and mission of the United Nations; raise awareness of complex global issues; and promote peace and the value of cooperation and diplomacy.

Scholars BowlA record number of students participated in the 2013-2014 Scholars Bowl 9th-12th grade teams. The 9th-12th grade teams joined the Baldwin County League at Faulkner State Community College after the beginning of the 2013-2014 season and plan to participate in this league for the upcoming season.

The 7th and 8th grade Scholars Bowl A Team

won the Bay Area Scholastic Championship for the second consecutive year. Additionally, the team placed second for the entire 2013-2014 academic season, with 7th grader Ty Kannegieter winning the Top Player Award.

Wendy’s High School HeismanSeniors Garris Goe and Bowen Spottswood each received the Bayside Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. This leadership award honors well-rounded young men and woman who excel in learning, performing, and leading in the classroom, on the field and in the community.

United States Naval Academy Summer SeminarJuniors Nick James and John Stuart have been selected to attend the U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar. The program is a fast-paced, six-day experience for high achievers who have completed their junior year in high school. Summer Seminar teaches students about life at the Naval Academy, where academics, athletics and professional training play key roles in developing future U.S. leaders.

Alabama Key Clubs InternationalJunior Milin Vira was elected as Division 19’s Lieutenant Governor from Alabama Key Clubs International. His main responsibility in this position will be to oversee all other Key Clubs in the region.

Peer Counselors Seniors Grace Turner and Harper Morrison represented Bayside’s Peer Counseling program at the Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation, Inc. annual stakeholders dinner. Alabama state Representatives Steve McMillan and Harry Shiver were among the attendees. Selected each spring, Bayside’s peer counselors act as advisors and role models to students in grades 4-6.

American Legion Boys State & American Legion Auxiliary Girls State are the premier programs for teaching students how government works while helping them develop leadership skills and an appreciation for citizens’ rights. Bayside’s Boys

Eastern Shore Youth Leadership ProgramJuniors Nick Bolton, Harrison Fahy, Mitchell Gaddy and KK Hill, seniors Valerie Johnson, Emelyn Boan, Maddi Little, Harper Morrison, and Ali Mulla and junior Chapin Smith were 2014 graduates of the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership Program. The program was created 13 years ago for students to gain a greater knowledge about their community; develop strong leadership skills; and gain more self- and social-awareness in order to make a positive difference in the quality of community life.

Governor’s School of AlabamaJuniors Isabella Donnell, Chapin Smith and John Stuart were selected to participate in Governor’s School, a summer residential honors program for gifted rising high school seniors.

State Rotary Youth Leadership ProgramJuniors Caroline Kolakoski and John Stuart were selected to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, which is a leadership development program that typically runs for three to 10 days and includes

presentations, activities and workshops that cover a variety of topics, including: communication skills, leadership fundamentals and ethics; community and global citizenship; and problem solving and conflict management.

Capstone Leadership Academy Sophomore Sarah Nobles recently participated in the annual Capstone Leadership Academy at The University of Alabama. Each year 100 outstanding high school sophomores who have shown interest in leadership through service are selected to participate.

Shore Optimist Club as one of six young women to serve a one-year term as a “goodwill ambassador” and a member of the 2014 Dogwood Trail Court. Additional juniors representing Bayside in the pageant and scholarship program were Caroline Kolakoski, Meghan McCrory and Madison Shelley.

Mobile Music Teachers 45th Annual Sonata ContestFreshman Lena Cole Speir won first place in level 9A.

Daphne Optimist Club Essay Contest Senior Olivia Kercher won first place and freshman Trent Kannegieter won second place.

DAR Good CitizenSenior Maggie Cooper recently represented Bayside Academy as DAR Good Citizen. Maggie also won the Jeanne Yancey Service Award in 2013.

Coastal KidsBayside placed second in Coastal Kids, which is a one-day competition that quizzes Mobile and Baldwin County 5th graders about their knowledge of environmental science as it pertains to this area.

Dauphin Island Sea Lab Field TripDuring their March field trip to Dauphin Island Sea Lab, Bayside 5th graders joined scientists in a rare find when they caught a prehistoric fish, the sturgeon. After documenting the fish, which measured 6 feet, 8 inches, they released it.

“When we pulled it up, we had no idea what it was. We just knew it was something big,” said DISL

educator Greg Graeber. “In 11 years I’ve never seen a sturgeon,” said Graeber. Sturgeons that live in the Gulf typically feed off crustaceans and weigh up to 200 pounds. While they resemble sharks, Graeber said they are not dangerous.

The species is a survivor from the dinosaur age. Sturgeons are well known for being one of the main sources for an expensive delicacy, caviar. As a result, the sturgeon is listed as threatened because of overfishing.

Teacher of the Year Award for Baldwin CountyFaculty member Vivian Tarwater recently received the Air Force Association South Alabama Chapter Teacher of the Year Award for Baldwin County. This award goes to a teacher who is promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mechanics) and aerospace skills and thus preparing students to use and contribute to tomorrow’s technologies. Mrs. Tarwater teaches science to Baysiders in grades 2-4.

Presidents & First Ladies DayBayside’s 4th grade class celebrated U.S. Presidents and First Ladies with a presentation in late February. Each 4th grader dressed in costume as a past U.S. President or First Lady, wrote an essay about that person and delivered a quote attributed to him or her. As part of the program, students also recited the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution and sang “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “God Bless America” and the Alabama state song, “Alabama.” Parents, faculty and other Bayside students attended the presentation.

14th Annual Weeks Bay Photography Contest2nd grader Elizabeth Ernest took second and third place in the flora category and second place in habitat. 6th grader Mac Gaillard placed third in the habitat category and received second place and an honorable mention in the fauna category.

"The Three Musketeers"Bayside seniors and juniors had a successful run performing "The Three Musketeers" for the fall play.

Daphne Public Library Bookmark ContestOf the almost 600 entries in the K-5th grade division, Bayside students took 13 of the possible 18 ribbons. Also, all three overall division winners were Baysiders!

Students who were overall winners were: First Place – 1st grader Marcella Covington; Second Place – 2nd grader Maysie Douglas; Third Place – 3rd grader Marlee Moore.

Baysiders’ Artwork Graces Journal CoversCongratulations to 2nd grader Marykate Foster and 5th grader Sophia Bongiorno, whose artwork was chosen for the cover of journals for the Hammill Institute on Disabilities in Austin, Texas.

Visual Arts Achievement Program for District 1 At the Intermediate School level, 6th graders Del Corte and Cody Smart placed first in drawing and


mixed media respectively, while 6th grader Caroline Cunningham placed third in mixed media. 6th grader Evelyn Prickett also entered artwork in the program.

Junior Emma Nelson placed first and junior Adam Nielsen placed second in district 1 at the Upper School level in the painting category. Additional Bayside Upper School students who entered artwork in the program included senior Katherine Ham, sophomore Mackenzie Ross, and juniors Audrey Mecke and Emily Wright.

"The Wizard of Oz"The spring show of "The Wizard of Oz" was Bayside's 23rd theatre production showcasing the talents of over 45 students.

Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation & Design Program5th grader Kyla Barton and 6th grader Christian Milstead each received honorable mentions. Each year, student artwork from around the country is judged at the state level, and the state best of show is entered in the national contest. The national winning artwork will be shown on the 2014-2015 junior duck stamp.

Daphne Optimist Club’s Art ContestCongratulations to Bayside participants of the Daphne Optimist Club’s “Be Kind to Kids” art contest. 5th graders Julia Ahrendt, Catherine Hawkins and Keenan Klutes were recognized, and Julia Ahrendt was awarded second place out of 600-plus entries.

2014 Head of School Purchase AwardBayside commissioned senior Katherine Ham to create the 2014 Head of School Purchase Award. The original print will hang in the Main Administration Building. Framed, signed reproductions were given as mementos to parent leaders, retiring teachers and an outgoing Board member.

Alum Plays His Original Music for BaysidersEvan Mayfield ’04 entertained grades pk-6 on campus in April with music he has written for the Maggie McNair children’s book series. A graduate of Ringling College of Art & Design, Evan lives in Los Angeles, where he works as an artist and animator. Most recently, he worked as staff animator at Walt Disney Company. He also currently produces unique, one-of-a kind lamps under the company name Ri-Stor.

Eastern Shore Repertory Theatre Scholarship 5th-grader Isabella McCormick recently received a 2014 scholarship awarded by Eastern Shore Repertory Theatre to French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts, which is a performing arts summer camp just outside of Hancock, New York.

First Congressional District Art CompetitionSenior Katherine Ham and junior Emma Nelson entered artwork in the First Congressional District Art Competition.

VOLLEYBALLBayside’s Lady Admirals volleyball team made history once again by winning their 12th consecutive 3A state title at the 2013 volleyball state championship. This win marked Bayside’s 22nd state volleyball crown overall. The team was led by coaches Ann Schilling, Brenda Allen and Monique Adams.

Senior Sydney Chandler was named MVP of the 3A state championship tournament. Sydney also set the National Federation of State High School Associations’ national record for assists, with 6,215 assists for four seasons. Senior Morgan Dulaney and freshman Lauren Chastang were named All-State team members.

FOOTBALLLed by Coach Phil Lazenby, Bayside’s football team ended the season with an overall 8-5 record and a 5-2 region record. The season began with two wins and four losses, but the Admirals turned things around with six consecutive wins and made the third round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association playoffs for the sixth consecutive year.

Quarterback and senior Hunter Slater broke all passing records for Bayside (yards, attempts, completions and touchdowns) and was named honorable mention as a quarterback on the All-State team. Senior Trip Puckett broke Bayside’s career rushing yardage record and was named 1st and 10 Player of the Week for his single game school record of 254 yards and four touchdowns in the Admirals’ game against Satsuma. Junior Greg Wallace set the single

season school record for most receptions. With the win over Southside-Selma (39-6), Coach

Lazenby won his 50th game as the Head Coach at Bayside. Coach Lazenby was selected to coach in the North-South All-Star Game during Alabama-All Star Sports Week in July.

Football Signings -Garris Goe: Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.

CROSS-COUNTRYLed by Coach Alan Foster, the girls cross-country team was named 3A state champions last fall for the second consecutive year. The boys team finished seventh with strong performances by senior Ryan Shankle and sophomore Ash Midyett, who both earned All-State Honors.

CHEERCoached by Sam Leffard and led by seven seniors, the squad kicked off the year with a strong showing at Universal Cheerleaders Association cheer camp in Panama City, Florida. The Admirals’ cheer team won first place in every competition for the entire week. More than 800 cheerleaders from around the United States competed. Senior Kelleen Sullivan will be cheering at Southern Methodist University next year.

SWIMCoached by Scott Johnston, the swim team competed in six meets during the 2013-2014 season including the Mobile County meet in November. Junior Jake Melendez qualified for the state meet in Auburn with a time of 25.02 in the 50 freestyle. B

BASKETBALLUnder the leadership of Coach Ralph Watson, the varsity boys basketball team finished second in Area 1 Class 3A with a 5-3 area record. The team was led by sophomore Spencer Newman, who eclipsed the 1000-point mark in early January and was named to the Press-Register Sports Writers All South-West Team. Spencer also won honorable mention in the Alabama Sports Writers Association Class 3A All-State Team.

With Coach Brittany Davidson at the helm, the girls basketball team had a great season. This team played hard with tremendous heart and never gave up! A great group is slated for next season, and the future looks bright for the girls basketball program.

SOCCERUnder the leadership of Coach Jamie Ferguson, the boys soccer team made it to the quarter finals and ranked second in the state for the entire season. The Admirals scored 75 goals during the season, maintained a 13-game winning streak and were undefeated in Area 1.

Selected to Battle for the Bay were: sophomore Colin Douglas, senior Christopher Johnson, junior Thomas Earl McLendon and senior Alexander Stevens.

Thomas Earl McLendon was selected to play on the North-South All-Star soccer team during Alabama’s 2014 All-Star Sports Week in July in Montgomery. The Admirals will travel during the summer to London, England, to practice with and compete against

London-based professional soccer academies.Led by Coach Josh Montgomery, the girls soccer

team had a final record of 12-8-2, outscored their opponents by a 2:1 margin, and maintained a top-10 ranking throughout the year in the 1A-4A classification. The Lady Admirals were Area 1 champs with a record of 5-1 in area play.

The girls enjoyed the most successful season in nearly a decade. Senior Brittany Houseman was selected for the Lakeshore Shootout All-Tournament team, and junior Emily Wright was named to the North-South All-Star team. Trista Barry, who also earned a bronze in the long jump and placed fourth in the javelin throw. Senior Isabel Leatherbury earned a bronze medal in the state high jump. 8th grader Mary Catherine Branyon won a bronze in the 800- and the 1600-meter runs, while sophomore Jane Ann Cicco won a bronze in the 100-meter dash. Freshman Meagan Daves set a personal best by finishing 10th in the triple jump.

In the boys relays, the Admirals set a new school record in the 4x100 and came in sixth. The Admirals also placed fifth in the 4x800 relay with the second-fastest mark all-time in Bayside’s history. Senior Sam Colville and sophomore William Hixson both ran personal best relay splits. Senior Ryan Shankle earned a silver medal in the 1600-meter run and a bronze in the 3200-meter run. In the high jump, freshman Trey Barry took a bronze medal while junior Jake Melendez placed 10th.

BASEBALLUnder the leadership of Athletic Director and Coach Doug Leffard, the baseball team ended its season with a 25-8 overall record and was a runner-up in the 3A Area 1 championship. The team also made its 11th consecutive appearance in the Alabama High School Athletic Association playoffs and nailed a top-10 final ranking for the 11th consecutive year.

SOFTBALLCoached by Brittany Davidson, the softball team finished the season with an 8-11 record. Three dedicated seniors – Anabel Jones, Madison Matthews and Maggie Cooper – helped the team win games and build respect for Bayside’s softball program. Freshman Lauren Chastang had two home runs during the season.

GOLFThe Bayside boys golf team finished the season by winning its second consecutive 3A boys golf state championship! The team’s combined score of 571 was 27 strokes better than the second-place team. Sophomore William Buhl was the medalist with a 4 under par 140, while junior Jacob Dyas was the runner-up medalist with a 2 under par 142.

The Bayside girls golf team was led by senior Rebecca Todd, who will be missed next year. During the 2013-2014 season, the girls golf team displayed courage, character and a will to win. Bayside’s golf teams are led by Coach Mark Lasseter.

TENNISThe boys finished fourth in the 1A-3A state championship. Freshman Trent Kannegieter won the individual state championship singles title for the third consecutive year and was named Press-Register Coastal Alabama Tennis Player of the Year. Sophomore Charlie Knight made it to the singles finals; Charlie and senior Keegan Cort made it to the doubles finals.

The girls team finished fifth in the state. Making it to the semi-finals in singles were sophomore Sarah Nobles, 8th grader Abby Warner, sophomore Elizabeth Weller and senior Suzanne Weller. Coach Darcey Puckett leads Bayside’s tennis teams.

Effective builders see infinite possibilities. Every builder in the community must be empowered; everyone has a role, and every role is important. Reaching each student is critical and requires effective interaction.

Good communication makes for better builders. Good builders understand the value of integrity, honesty and clarity of message. They not only hear, they listen. They create, participate in and inspire team effort. They maximize each opportunity to stretch and grow, to motivate others to be internally driven to do their best.

Change is inevitable. It is a part of our everyday lives. Change that is designed and programmed to yield desired results requires planning, buy-in, cooperation, revision, and forward thinking grounded in tradition and experience. To build progressively and responsibly, we must assess where we have been, how we got there, where we want to go and what might be the most effective course of action to reach desired goals. We invest in helping our students become better and different because of their experiences in our community. As students grow, the Bayside community evolves and becomes better.

Strengths are celebrated at Bayside. We teach students to seek answers, always looking for better questions to ask.

As we look back on this past year and anticipate the renewal of effort with this year’s students, let us reflect: What does all of this mean?

Each year at graduation, I ask the seniors to talk about their Bayside experiences and memories. Each year, I am rejuvenated by their insights. Here are a few of their thoughts:

• I have loved growing up at Bayside and will dearly miss it.

Truly, the Bayside philosophy, parents, pupils, setting, professionals, purpose and plan are remarkable.

I watch meaningful things happen every day at Bayside. The partnership between families and the school community is genuine, caring and committed to excellence, not only fostering growth in each child but also encouraging each community member to stretch. We are all invested in the development of our nation’s greatest resource – our children. We want them to learn, to do well and to do good. We hope to inculcate the desire to leave the path for others clearer. Individuals matter here. Individuality is encouraged. Talent is not only developed, it is inspired. There is magic here. As 64 seniors step into 25 colleges in 12 states this fall, we want them to remember they were sent to Bayside to test their strength. We are forever connected in the magic of their Bayside experiences. As we undertake the building tasks of 2014-2015, we hope the Class of 2014 continues to extend the Bayside dream as they build their futures.

GOLF TOURNAMENT& THE BAY AFFAIR

The 23rd annual John A. Robertson Memorial Golf tournament was held at Lakewood Golf Course on April 3. Golf chairs Amy and Haymes Snedeker and their numerous volunteers created a near-perfect golf event, including spectacular weather. The sell-out event was a winner for all players. Participants received tee gifts of Bridgestone wedges, hats and visors. The four-person scramble winner in the gross division was the Terry Thompson team comprising Ty Thompson, Kevin McCarron, Bryant MacKeller and JT Portemont, recording a blazing score of 54. The net winner was the Chick and Sea team of Brad King, Darryl Tripp, Lain Cheney and Miles McDaniel. The team of Walter Billups, Teal Corte, Lloyd Nicaud and David Pierce was the winner of the Iberia Bank golf ball challenge. The day was a fantastic kick-off to an incredible week of support for Bayside.

The culmination of the fantastic week took place with The Bay Affair on April 5 on Bayside's Bluff. The Bay Affair chairs Laura Norton and Stephanie Easterling guided a wonderful group of volunteers to create an atmosphere of community that allowed the Golf Tournament and the auction to raise 154 percent more than their goal. The $162,146 was earmarked for professional development and technology.

The excitement of the Helicopter Ball Drop, the online silent auction, the partnership of local artists and students, the individual artwork by Primary School students and the incredible list of auction items were

more than powerful enough to offset the rainy night of The Bay Affair. The dueling piano entertainment allowed a crowd-pleasing interactive night that was fun for all in attendance. Special thanks go to all the volunteers for the John A. Robertson Memorial and The Bay Affair; their passion and dedication created memories that will be cherished.

23rd annual John A. Robertson Memorial


Graduation marked the end of one Bayside affiliation for our 64 seniors and added another. As our newest alumni, they join a group that continues to celebrate Bayside’s past and influence its future.

This past year, Lauren Reibe '09 and Jeff Stanley '03 joined the faculty, Lauren as a math teacher and Jeff as as a member of the athletic department. They, along with librarian Brenda Sirmon Allen '82, foreign language teachers Eva Buder '00 and Megg Dyson Edgar '00, drama teacher Tim Kirby '92, Intermediate school teacher Emily Robertson Messenger '03, math teacher Darcey Fugard Puckett '96 and Primary/Intermediate School science teacher Vivian Sirmon Tarwater, impact Baysiders every day. Mary Neil Crosby '81 served as interim Communications Director during the Spring; she will rejoin the faculty next year in the Admissions Office.

Bayside Welcomes Legacy Families: Fifty-eight of our more than 730 students are legacies, children of Bayside graduates. New to Bayside this year were Katie Bonner (Ashley Brackin Bonner '95), Henry and Nina Dowhan (Adrienne Johnson Dowhan '91), Ansley Hagan (Philip Hagan '00), Izzy Inge (Meador Inge '96), Elizabeth Macpherson (Ritchie

Macpherson '91), and Wells Snedeker (Amy Crowder Snedeker '95). There was a legacy child in each class with Trip Puckett (Darcey Fugard Puckett '86) and Grace Turner (Lee Turner ’84) leading the pack as seniors.

Armed Forces Servicemember of the Year: Captain (Dr.) Jason G. Halbert '95 was recognized by the Alumni Association as this year’s recipient. Jason is an operational psychologist with the United States Army Special Operations Command. His older son, Jay, will be at Bayside next year.

Hall of Fame: Inductions for the newly merged Athletic Hall of Fame and Academic and Professional Society were held in late January. Inductees were Dr. Tara Griffin '94, Lt. Col. (retired) Tripp Howard '82, Captain Peter McGavin '02, Stephen Mills, Jr. '81, and Carson Rockett '03. The inductees’ bios are online at www.baysideacademy.org./alumni.

4th Annual Alumni All-Sports Gathering: The teams were well-matched, the competition was fierce and the bleachers were crowded. Mark your calendar for the first Saturday in February next year.

The Lorna Huey Gallery in the Pilot Center: Two alumni art shows were hung in the gallery this year.

The John A. Robertson Memorial Golf Tournament & The Bay Affair: Both events saw many alums among the participants; everyone agrees that fun was had by all. Alumni were busy behind the scenes as well. Amy Crowder Snedeker '95 and her husband, Haymes, co-chaired the Golf Tournament while Britten Kopesky Steiner '94 and Ansley Head Ahrendt '84 were alumni chairs for The Bay Affair. Leigh Wilson Postle '96 co-chaired the Student Art Division. Among the area artists working with current students were America Jones '94 and Kelly Fitzhugh Weller '94, Coleman Mills '87, and Leigh Wilson Postle '96. Caroline Reehl Boykin '07 donated a piece in honor of the Class of 2014. And by the way…the very best part of the events in the eyes of the youngest Baysiders was the dropping of hundreds of golf balls from a helicopter circling the soccer field. Would you be surprised to know that James Sirmon '79 was the helicopter’s onboard navigator and official golf ball dropper?

Distinguished Alumnus Award: Darcey Fugard Puckett '86 was recognized as this year’s recipient. Darcey has been on the Bayside faculty for 13 years. She teaches math to 7th, 8th, and 9th graders, coaches middle school cheerleading and varsity boys

and girls tennis. Darcey also sponsors numerous clubs and activities for middle-school-aged students. The presentation was made at graduation. Congratulations, Darcey.

Alumni Association president Randy Niemeyer '81 and council member Ginny Tomlinson McCrory '95 made a very special presentation at the final faculty meeting honoring four faculty members who were retiring with more that 25 years of service to the school. Mrs. Priscilla Comer, Mrs. Anne Corte, Mrs. Ginger Taylor, and Mrs. Beth Turner were each presented portraits of their first and last classes at Bayside.

Alumni Council: Kelly Fitzhugh Weller '94 has been named the Council’s vice-president. Also newly named to the Council are Meador Inge '96, Ginny Tomlinson McCrory '95, Paul Rider '95, Jason Halbert '95, Andi Cox Millsaps '04, Mary Neil Crosby '81 and Mandy Lay '98. If you are interested in serving, please contact president Randy Niemeyer. The next meeting is scheduled for mid-August.

Dear Bayside Family,As summer winds down, the faculty, staff and Board of Trustees are excited about the promise of Bayside’s upcoming 44th school year.

We are very fortunate that Mr. Ed Costello has joined Bayside as our Interim Head of School. The 2014-2015 school year is shaping up nicely with Ed at the helm. Ed brings with him years of experience as both a Head of School and an Interim Head of School. Since early July, he has been meeting with faculty, staff and the Board to help ensure a smooth transition. When you see him on campus, please introduce yourself and welcome him.

Bayside does not slow down when the students are away. Teachers and staff have been preparing their classrooms, meeting in groups and attending educational enrichment seminars. Summer also has provided an opportunity for campus enhancements. The McLean Science Building is getting a well-deserved facelift; in other activity, campus-wide technological upgrades are taking place. The grounds remain in excellent condition, and soon the football field will be lined and prepared for the fall season.

These enhancements enable students to learn and grow in the best possible environment to ensure their ultimate success. Faculty, staff and the Board of Trustees are excited to welcome students back to Bayside for the upcoming year. See you in August!
