Celebration Spotlight In My Life Diary Writing Competition Winners

Friday 25th May saw the closing date of our ‘In My Life’ diary writing competition. We received a wonderful selection of entries that made the judges smile, sigh with sympathy, gasp with delight, laugh and even cry!

Some children chose to write from their own personal point of view, including some descriptions of traumatic experiences, such as being at the Ariana Grande concert; coping with divorce or being a refugee. Some children wrote from the point of view of another person, or even an object, such as a park bench! Some were characters from history – imagined or real – including survivors of the plague, the Titanic or the Fire of London – and characters from books or plays, for example the Friar from Romeo and Juliet and Auggie from Wonder. We even had an entry written in French!

We were very impressed with the caliber of writing and judges had a very difficult job of finalising prizes.

Winners from:

Broadgreen Primary (Y1)

Mab Lane (Y6)

St Julie’s High (Y8)

Runner’s Up:

St Anne’s (Y4)

St Hilda’s (Y11)

Highly Commended:

St Clare’s,

Phoenix,

St Sebastian’s

A prize ceremony and celebration will take place on Thursday 28th June at the Museum of Liverpool.

Recommended Reading

We have been working really hard to produce a set of Recommended Reading Lists for EYFS, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3 & 4 and Year 5 & 6.

How Does a Lighthouse Work? by Roman Belyaev; A non-fiction book full of facts about Lighthouses. How can we tell one lighthouse from another? What does a lighthouse keeper do?

Where are the most unusual lighthouses in the world? Depart on an enchanting voyage with the school children in this book to discover the answers to these questions along with other fascinating facts about lighthouses and how they work. A charming journey through the science and history of lighthouses around the world.

Kick by Mitch Johnson; Budi’s plan is simple...He’s going to be a star, instead of sweating over each football boot he makes, each stitch he sews, each box he packages.

He’s going to play for the greatest team on earth, rather than in the square behind the factory where he works. But one unlucky kick brings Budi’s world crashing down, because now he owes the Dragon, the most dangerous man in all Jakarta. Soon it isn’t only Budi’s dreams at stake, but his life. A story about dreaming big, about hope and heroes, and never letting anything stand in your way...

Summer 2018

Love That Dog by Sharon Creech; Slowly Jack learns the pleasures of writing poetry as Miss Stretchberry encourages him to tell his own story through verse.

What emerges is a moving and memorable story about a boy and his dog and his growing passion for poetry.

Footpath Flowers by JoArno Lawson; A wordless, beautifully illustrated picture book.A little girl collects wild flowers while her distracted

father pays her – and their surroundings – little attention. Each flower the little girl gathers becomes a gift for a person or animal, and whether the gift is noticed or ignored, both giver and recipient are transformed by their encounter. An ode to the importance of small things, small people and small gestures, Footpath Flowers is a quiet but powerful testament to the joy that children can find in ordinary things and the mutual value of giving.
