    The festivalThis autumn sees the return of theBBC History

    Magazineweekend festival, following last yearssell-out event. With almost twice as manyspeakers and two extra venues, 2014s festivalpromises to be even bigger and better thanlast time around.

    The festival takes place in the ancient hilltoptown of Malmesbury in Wiltshire, which is oneof the oldest boroughs in England. It is also theburial place of thelstan, grandson of Alfred

    the Great and the first king of all England. Theabbey that houses his tomb is Malmesburyscrowning glory. In around AD 1000, Eilmerthe flying monk launched an early attempt ataviation from the abbeys tower (it failed, he

    broke his legs), and in the churchyard is buriedone Hannah Twynnoy, famously eaten by atiger here in 1703. The town is also where the17th-century philosopher Thomas Hobbeswas born.

    Close to 40 top-name historians, authors andtelevision personalities will be speaking overthe course of the weekend in MalmesburyAbbey, Malmesbury Town Hall, a specialmarquee and the Old Bell hotel. There will also

    be a fully stocked history bookshop, courtesy ofWaterstones Cirencester, where our speakerswill be signing books.

    situated just north of the M4 between Swindon and Bath.
