B&CE brand guidelines 04July 2019

Our evolving brandThe word ‘brand’ is broadly defined in dictionaries as “a type of product manufactured by a company under a particular name”. In fact, it has evolved within commercial environments to mean and represent far more than this simple dictionary definition.

Today ‘brand’ can represent the symbolic embodiment of an organisation’s ethics, culture and product offering, as well as delivery and service standards.

It’s vitally important that the visual representation of the brand is always reproduced and positioned in a consistent manner and within an appropriate environment.

Brands do change. If they are to remain relevant to their customers and target markets, companies must adapt their approach and tone of voice to remain engaged with their audiences. Successful brands will more than likely want to retain a link with their past rather than totally reinvent themselves.

B&CE has a proud heritage within the construction industry, which we want to protect and build upon in the future, in addition to engaging with other market sectors. For this reason our brand has undergone an evolution rather than one of total reinvention.

These guidelines demonstrate B&CE’s brand and creative treatments.

1.1 Introduction

Brand is much more than just our name or logo

Brand is our people Brand is the way we speak Brand is everything we say Brand is our customer service Brand is our strategy Brand is our processes Brand is every piece of collateral/communication Brand is our call to action

Brand is everything. And everything is brand.

Our vision and values1.2 Introduction

Our values Our values support our purpose. They spell out what we do and how we behave, to help us deliver our vision.

Creating Simplicity

For far too long, financial services and pensions have been made too complicated, but we believe that the majority of people do not need such complication. We are prepared to challenge convention to make things simpler for our members.

• We strip out complications and remove obstacles, to enable people to make considered decisions in their best interests.

• We make things better and simpler by ‘doing the right thing’, answering the real needs of our members by helping improve their financial wellbeing.

Showing Compassion

We have strong beliefs and values – we care about what we do and want to make a difference. Therefore, we look for reasons to pay claims, not reject them. We will also invest time dealing with our customers and being sympathetic to, and understanding of, their personal situation.

• We put ourselves in ‘other people’s shoes’.

• We give people time, listen to what they have to say and care about how they feel.

• We are happy to challenge the status quo: we do things the way that works best for our members, not just the way everyone else does them.

Keeping Promises

Great administration and service is what makes us different. This means ensuring we manage, meet and exceed the expectations of our members, their employers and other parties with whom we do business.

• We always do what we say we’ll do and we don’t stop until it’s as good as we can make it.

• We build our business by providing good quality products and by meeting the needs of our members, their employers and their advisers.

Our vision In financial services, our vision is to become the UK’s leading mass market retirement savings provider. In construction services, our vision is to become the UK’s leading Occupational Health Scheme for the construction industry.

Our purpose

Founded in construction, we are a not-for-profit organisation which operates for the benefit of our members – we work for people, not profit. Our members are at the heart of our organisation; when we make decisions we do so with the members’ interest at the forefront of our thinking. With over 70 years’ experience, we are respected experts in providing easy-to-understand products and services that meet the needs of ordinary working people.

To maintain our focus of meeting the needs of our members, we operate to a number of fundamental principles:

• Putting members’ interests at the heart of our decision making

• Investing in our people

• Maintaining operational agility

• Delivering simple customer journeys.

The logo2.1 Visual brand elements

The B&CE logo has been created to represent the key elements of our brand personality: modern, open, clear, accessible and authoritative.

The preferred colour option for the logo is shown here. See the section 2.12 for more details on specific colour breakdown.

In text, B&CE should be referred to as singular, in capitals.

The logo has been specifically crafted and should never be recreated.

Artwork files are available from the Marketing Department

Logo exclusion zone2.2 Visual brand elements

Logo clear zone

We have created a minimum clear zone around the logo to ensure it appears prominent and uncluttered. Do not place text or other graphics in this area. Where possible, more than the minimum space should be left around the logo.

As shown here, the clear zone is denoted by the ‘X’ (equivalent to the height of B&CE in the logo).

Logo minimum size

To ensure the B&CE logo appears legible and recognisable, we have created a minimum size below. The logo should not be reproduced smaller than this.

Logo usage don’ts2.4 Visual brand elements

Common mistakes

It’s important that the logo is always used consistently and correctly and never in a way which would damage the integrity of the brand.

Things to avoid:

The logo should never be reproduced in a colour other than those recommended in section 2.3 (ie not green or grey).

The logo should never be shown on an angle, backwards or in mirror image.

The logo should never be shown rotated at an angle which means the letters ‘B&CE’ are not sitting horizontally.

Never make the letters ‘B&CE’ different colours.

The logo should never be stretched horizontally or vertically or be rearranged.

The logo should never be displayed with any ‘special effects’, such as halos, drop-shadows or motion blur.

Brand architecture / joint branding2.5 Visual brand elements

The B&CE brand architecture is applied on three levels – depending on the communication and the purpose.

When referring to both B&CE and The People’s Pension within the same communication ensure that the context is correct. Use either:

B&CE, providers of The People’s Pension...

or

The People’s Pension, provided by B&CE...

B&CE branded • Corporate communications • Internal communications • Signage • B&CE website • EasyBuild • Employee Accident & Life Cover • Employee Healthcare • B&CE Charitable Trust

Dual branded • Dual message / broad audience

• Business cards

• Reverse of TPP brochures

B&CE endorsed When the emphasis is on The People’s Pension only and B&CE is the support story, eg:

• The People’s Pension website • Single faced communications • Exhibitions

Page 13: B&CE brand guidelineswritingtoolkit.bandce.co.uk › ... › 05 › ...0002.0916.pdf · 5.4 Letter referencing guide 36 5.5 Email signatures 38 5.6 Word templates 39 6.0 Literature

B&CE brand guidelines 13July 2019

Size ratio2.6 Visual brand elements

For occasions where The People’s Pension logo needs to appear in conjunction with the B&CE brand, please follow these rules:

The height of the B&CE logo must be the same as The People’s Pension logo. This ratio also applies when the logos are above one another.

Business cards

These logo sizes apply:

B&CE – 15mm wide TPP – 22mm wide

Endorsement logo

On press adverts for The People’s Pension, there should always be a B&CE endorsement logo in the bottom right corner that says: Provided by B&CE (see right examples and TPP Guidelines). The minimum logo size applies.

The appropriate master artwork files should always be used, never recreated.

Size ratio

Please note: The People’s Pension has its own unique set of brand guidelines that should be followed for all communications. These are available on the intranet.

Strapline proportions

The strapline supports our brand positioning and should appear whenever possible.

• The example opposite shows the ratio between logo and strapline

• The strapline’s size is determined by The People’s Pension logo size. The height of the ‘e’ in the strapline should be able to fit twice into the height of the ‘e’ in pension 2 x strapline ‘e’ = pension ‘e’

• The Strapline should be shown in Heading Grey (70% black) when used on a white background. For colour references please refer to section 2.12.

• For positioning on a page/screen please refer to sections 6.0 and 7.0.

Typefaces2.8 Visual brand elements

In marketing communications our primary font is VAG

We have chosen these specific typefaces to complement our brands. The use of these typefaces will build recognition and will maintain a distinctive look to our marketing communications.

The main typeface, called VAG, is sans serif with rounded ends and has been chosen for its clarity and friendliness. It should be used for all type, including headlines, sub-headings and body text.

When VAG is not available

The standard recommended ‘system font’ on your PC is Calibri (a sans serif typeface) which is highly legible when used in Word and PowerPoint. We use three weights – regular, italic and bold.

Print use font

B&CE brand guidelines 17July 2019

Format basics

Alignment – Always align typography to the left. This increases legibility and ensures even spacing between words.

Case – Standard sentence case should always be used for headings and text (ie not all capital letters, unless specific emphasis is required, or in a title). Heading example:

‘Master trust providers claim TPR/ICAEW framework will fail’. Title example: ‘Account Login Screen’.

Emphasis – Use bold, italics and colour appropriately within text to suit the levels of emphasis required. Do not use too many type sizes/weights within a single document though, as over-use can defeat the object.

Spacing – Letter spacing should be standard. Spacing that’s either too tight or too open can adversely affect legibility. Use a line space or half a line space between paragraphs and under subheadings. Examples:

This line is incorrect – as the spacing is too tight.

This line is incorrect – as it’s too open.

This line is correctly spaced and easier to read.

Bullet points

Always use these standard styles for bullet points:

1. With a colon – when each bullet is part of a sentence and the final point completes the sentence. Use lower case on the first letter of the word at the beginning of the bullet. Place one full stop at the end of the last bullet point only – not on the others. For example:

Westfield Health:

• operates healthcare plans

• provides an award winning service

• is a not for profit organisation.

2. Without a colon – when it’s just a list of individual statements. Use a capital letter on the first letter of the word at the beginning of each bullet. Use no full stops at all. For example:

Surgery Choices at a glance

• No medical required

• Immediate start

Colons and semicolons

Generally the colon acts as a pause which introduces related information. It indicates that the reader should look forward to information that follows on from the earlier statement.

The semi-colon represents a break within a sentence that is stronger than a comma, but less final than a full stop.

Date format

When writing dates, use our standard format. For example:

1 April 2013

Do not write 1st April 13 or April 1st 2013.

Time format

Written as a 24-hour clock, with a colon and a hyphen to signify ‘to’. For example:

09:00-21:00 or 0900-12noon

Numbers

Numbers one to nine are written in words and numbers 10 and beyond are written in digits.

Apostrophes

In external communications we make use of apostrophes in words to show omission. However, in internal communications (particularly from the CEO) the words are to be in full. For example:

‘We’re aware of the challenges ahead’. ‘You’ll be able to view your account online’.

Quotation marks

As a general rule, use double quotation marks for actual quotes (that have been said by a person) and single quotation marks for references. For example:

John Smith states “as mentioned in the Money Marketing article ‘Auto-enrol earnings trigger increases’, this will significantly affect people”.

Signing off

Used as a new sentence, only the first word is capitalised. For example:

Yours sincerely, Many thanks, Kind regards.

B&CE colour palette2.11 Visual brand elements

Colour is a dramatic and vibrant way to display a brand’s character and is an integral part of B&CE’s identity. Our colour palette is fresh, modern and professional and should be used consistently across all communications, both online and offline.

White is an essential design element for B&CE, valued as both a colour and a spacial component. White should focus attention on what is there, without the implication that something is missing.

The colour palette is divided in to three sections:

Primary colour palette

The primary colour palette consists of five key colours: Light Blue, Purple, Violet, Mid Blue and Green. These are used predominantly throughout the brand, particularly to represent our core products.

Secondary colour palette

The five colours in the secondary palette are to be used selectively to complement the primary colour palette colours in a supporting role only. For example, Dark Blue might be used as a highlight colour to bring special attention to one point on a page where there is already a dominant primary colour.

Neutral palette

Two neutral greys provide a complementary balance and support all the colours in the primary and secondary palettes.

Grey should be used predominantly for headings (70% black) and text (85% black), paying particular attention to clarity and legibility. See section 2.9 for type styles.

Information graphics2.13 Visual brand elements

When displaying information it’s important for it to be clear and functional – information graphics can enhance clarity.

When used on an A4 document the line weight of tables and info boxes should always be 5pt. All other size documents scale appropriately.

Box rules should use colour unless on a coloured background where they should be white.

Icons can be placed in the top left corner circle.

B&CE brand guidelines 37July 2019

1. Customer No – to be used for individual customers

Account No – to be used for employer customers

2. Our Ref – approval code and date to be provided from Comms team who will update the approval log. There must be no alpha characters (as system letters do not support this) and all letters relating to The People’s Pension must have a 9 in front.

If the letter is a TPP version of an existing letter then the letter ref should be the same ref but pre-fixed with a 9. For example, letter 3366 is the EB opt-out letter so the TPP version of the opt-out letter would be given the reference number 93366.

Initials are those of the B&CE user who requested the letter (corre letters only).

3. Telephone number – to be determined by the letter audience and should follow:

• Existing employer customers and any employer operational letters: 01293 586666

• New employer customers and advisers: 0800 612 8080

• AE Assistance (this number should be used on AE literature ie joining pack, pre-enrolment comms etc): 0300 2000 444

• General Enquiries (this number replaces 08457 414142 or 01293 586790 and should be used for all non pension products and pension after staging ie statements, mailings etc): 0300 2000 555

• Opt-outs (this number is the IVR for opt-outs only): 0300 330 1280.

4. Email address – to be determined by the letter audience, see notes below:

[email protected] to be used for all individual customers, new and existing

[email protected] to replace [email protected] and be used by all existing employer customers on all operational documents as well as letters referring to multiple products. Also TPP operational letters

[email protected] to be used for campaigns and roadshows for new TPP employer customers only.

5. Web address – to be determined by the letter audience, see notes below:

• www.bandce.co.uk to be used for multiple products, existing customers and any product other than EasyBuild or The People’s Pension

• www.thepeoplespension.co.uk to be used for new customers and TPP only letters/literature.

6. Date – date of letter creation to be inserted. Format example: 17 May 2012.

7. Dimensions – reference fields, on top right of letter, start on same line as addressee and 10.6cm from left of page).

8. Footers – see flow chart produced by Regulatory & Compliance Team.

Examples for FinCo and Trustee footers to fit with TPP letters can be found on page 25.

9. Barcodes

A

B

• Barcode A is positioned under the address so it’s visible through the window of the envelope. This is used by Royal Mail to sort the post and provides a cheaper postal rate. Liaise with Business Services to determine whether this is required.

• Barcode B is aligned under the referencing fields on the top right and is used internally to scan RGAs (returned mail). Liaise with Business Services to determine if this is required.

10. Sign-off

• Sign-off should be ‘Yours sincerely,’ where you are addressing the letter to a named person.

• Letters to individuals/employees should be signed by Jamie Fiveash.

• Letters to employers should be signed by Jamie Fiveash.

• Any other strategic or Corporate communications should be signed by Patrick Heath-Lay.

• Job title under the signature should be bold and underlined.

11. Letter font should be Arial 10 or 11. Main headings should be 12 and subheadings 11.

12. Continued… should be added to the bottom right hand corner if the letter continues onto another page (duplex or separate page).

Dear [insert employee name]

How the changes to workplace pensions affect you

To help people save more for their retirement, the Government now requires all employers to enrol their workers into a workplace pension scheme. This is called automatic enrolment.

Your employer, [insert name of employer], has chosen The People’s Pension provided by B&CE as your workplace pension.

You are eligibleYou have been assessed to see whether you are eligible for automatic enrolment and I can confirm that you are. This means as of [enrolment date] you are enrolled into The People’s Pension.

Can I opt out?You don’t have to stay enrolled in The People’s Pension; you can choose to opt out if you want to, either by phone or online. See page x of the booklet ‘Questions you may have’. If you decide to opt out, you must tell us by [opt out date].

What if I don’t opt out?By staying in The People’s Pension, the following contributions will be made to your pension each [month/week]:

Contributions 1[% of [basis of earnings]] or 2[£] or 3[Greater of:]

Your employer will pay in: 1 and 2X 3£X or X% of relevant earnings

From your wages, you will pay in: 1 and 2X 3£X or X% of relevant earnings

The government add tax relief of: 1 and 2X 3£X or X% of relevant earnings [don’t include row if there is no tax relief]

Your contributions are made from your salary before any tax is taken (gross), meaning you benefit immediately from tax relief on your contributions at the highest rate you pay.

Made up of two parts, the email signature includes:

• a personalised area where you add your name, job title, direct phone number, work mobile number (if you have one), your email address and the company web addresses

• a generic area that’s automatically generated and added to external emails, so you don’t need to do anything – it includes our websites, social media, logos, awards and standard disclaimers.

Everyone at B&CE, without exception, is to use this format.

A guide to help you set up your email signature can be found on the intranet.

This is an example of how emails will look with the standard branding.

Financial security when you need it most

This valuable cover is provided by your employer at no cost to you. If you are seriously injured in an accident at work or while travelling to and from work, you will receive a tax-free lump sum payment with EAC. You can use this money as you choose, but it could help pay for altering your home if you need easier access; for skills retraining if you can no longer manage your usual job or to cover some of the bills normally paid by your wages.

What you can expect

• Ensure papers are FSC certified and are biodegradable and/or recyclable.

Paper weights

• Covers for publications should be 300gsm

• Text pages should be 170gsm

• Self-cover brochures/flyers can be between 170gsm and 300gsm depending on the audience and purpose of use

• Forms should be on 100gsm uncoated stock.

video

The selection of PowerPoint slides shown here demonstrates how the B&CE/TPP templates can be used to create clear and consistent presentations that conform to our brand guidelines.

When creating or editing presentations please ensure that you refer to the ‘Top 10 Tips’ on the following pages, and use the templates as a starting point.

Although they’re called ‘templates’, the files available are purely sample layouts with appropriate branding elements already built-in for your convenience.

Presentations containing slides that are restricted by templates can become boring for the audience. Our slides should be fresh, lively and contain information that’s new (at least to the audience), whilst maintaining our brand integrity.

Please also refer to the full B&CE and TPP brand guidelines.

Note: All external-facing presentations (or internal for training) must go through the approval process.

PowerPoint: Top 10 tips7.2 Digital & onscreen

1. Page setup

BEFORE you even start creating content, it’s important to set up your presentation with the correct screen shape. This will ensure that graphics are not stretched or squashed into a widescreen format, when you created it in standard format, or vice-versa.

How do you know which size to select?

WIDESCREEN 16:9 (recommended) – If you are presenting directly from your own PC/Laptop, the 16:9 ratio suits the monitor shape best.

STANDARD 4:3 – Older monitors, and some projectors, use the ‘old TV shape’ ratio of 4:3.

If you are transferring your presentation, sending it ahead, or presenting via the venue’s computer, you should contact the venue directly and ask what screen ratio they use.

Note: we have templates for the common sizes already set up for B&CE and TPP presentations. See Top Tip 4.

2. Powerpoint versions

Older versions of the PowerPoint programme do not recognise many of the animations/transitions of the current software and will not render subtle design effects like shadows and bevels. Similarly, they may not play videos or music files.

If you are presenting directly from the PC/Laptop on which the presentation was created, your presentation will be fine. If however, your presentation is being transferred to another computer, you need to check what version of PowerPoint is being used.

Note: B&CE use PowerPoint 2010 as standard but some company PCs/Laptops may have PowerPoint 2013 installed.

See Top Tip 3 about ‘PowerPoint Viewer’.

3. Powerpoint viewer

To help manage the version control issue mentioned in Top Tip 2, you can download a free viewer from Microsoft. Go to: http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=13

Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer lets you view fully-featured presentations, including animations, created in PowerPoint 97 and later.

But think ahead – you may not have a good internet connection at the venue, so it would be worth downloading the .EXE file before the day of the presentation. And if you have identified that the venue runs older software than your own, it would be wise to ask the host to download it on to their system before the event.

Note: To view a presentation via PowerPoint Viewer, you need to open the Viewer first, then go to file, open... (your presentation). Don’t double click on your presentation file to launch it, as that will simply open the main PowerPoint programme, and it will not function as intended.

Please liaise with the IT Department about downloading and installing PowerPoint Viewer.

4. B&CE templates

A series of Templates containing sample Master Slides are already prepared.

Please use these as your starting point. They include:

A_B&CE_Template_16x9B_B&CE_Template_4x3 C_TPP_Template_16x9 D_TPP_Template_4x3

Each Template has been set up for the appropriate screen shape (See Top Tip 1) and includes our colour palette and font styles.

5. Master slides

Slide Masters are set up for both B&CE and TPP presentations, but are purely prepared as layout suggestions for consistency. Remember, your audience expects a unique presentation with new content. Try to avoid your presentation looking pre-packaged.

There are Master Slides for:

• Blank slide,

• Basic slide,

• Title and content slide, and

• Divider slide.

And, on the pages, there are suggestions for:

• Title slide,

• Typical text/bullet point slide,

• Typical divider/break slide, and

• Typical end slide.

6. Font/type styles

The Master Slides already have type styles established for you. We use a simple and clear set of typographic rules consistently. For more detail about our typographic styles see Sections 2.8, 2.9 and 2.10 of the B&CE brand guidelines.

Alignment – Always align typography to the left. This increases legibility and keeps layouts tidy. Make sure headings and text sit in the same positions across all pages.

Case – Standard sentence case should always be used for headings and text (ie not all capital letters, unless specific emphasis is required).

Note: Our main corporate font, VAG Rounded, can not be embedded into PowerPoint successfully. Use the font that is set within the Templates, ie Calibri.

If you wish to have all of the type within your presentation specifically set in VAG Rounded, please refer to the Marketing Department well before you begin your presentation.

7. Colour palette

Within the Slide Master there is an established colour palette. See B&CE Colour Theme. Please use this set of colours wherever possible to ensure brand consistency, and specifically our Primary brand colours, blues and greys.

If in doubt, please refer to the B&CE brand guidelines Section 2.12 (B&CE colour breakdown) and The People’s Pension brand guidelines Section 2.11 (Colour palette).

Note: Red is not one of our colours.

Colour is a dramatic and vibrant way to display a brand’s character and is an integral part of the identity. Primary colour palette

The primary colour palette consists of two key colours, Grey (Pantone 424) and Light Blue (Pantone 306). These are used predominantly throughout the brand.

Secondary colour palette

To be used selectively to complement the primary colour palette.

8. Intro & conclusion slides

Within the Templates are example Introduction and Conclusion slides. These can act as visual markers for the audience. An Intro slide can be useful while the audience is settling down. A Conclusion slide can be a useful device to let everyone know that your presentation has come to an end and is a good prompter for questions.

9. Your content

As a general rule, in PowerPoint presentations, less is more.

Keep it simple – Slides should be used to support the speaker and supplement the presentation. The slides themselves are not the ‘star of the show’. Don’t let your message and your ability to tell a story get overshadowed by slides that are overly complicated.

Limit bullet points and text – Don’t bore an audience with too many bullet points and don’t fill your PowerPoint slides with too much text.

Limit transitions and builds (animations) – Use object builds and slide transitions selectively. Stick to the most subtle and professional (similar to what you might see on the evening TV news). Use no more than two or three different types of transition effects throughout.

Use high-quality graphics – Only use graphics that conform to the B&CE/TPP style. Avoid using Clip Art as it often undermines the professionalism of the presenter. Be mindful of image copyright. If you need assistance please refer to the Marketing Department.

Use colour well – Use our core brand colours consistently (Light Blue, Dark Blue, Dark Grey, Light Grey) and other colours sparingly as ‘accent’ colours only. Within charts you may need to use colour for differentiation.

10. Keep crib notes

Keep a simple list of your slides to hand as a ‘crib sheet’. This will enable you to jump quickly to a slide of interest if a member of the audience says “can you just go back to the slide about charging...”

If your crib notes show that slide is on page 5 say, while the presentation is still open, on the keyboard press ‘5’ and ‘enter’ to jump to that slide.
