Almost like clock-work, an enormous line forms outside the Plaza Tavern at 10:30 p.m. every Thursday night right off State Street. It’s a hipster bar now, sure, but the infamous $2 Long Island night has universal ap-peal. And despite the cheap tab, the drinks pack a punch. So it’s no wonder that on any given night, you’ll fi nd dads reminiscing about their college days over the Bubble Hockey game and hipsters smoking in

fl annel-fl ocks outside, along with everyone who just wants a cheap drink before the weekend. The Plaza is a cozy and dark lit-tle dive in the middle of down-town Madison, with painted nature murals on the walls and a jukebox which sucks in your money and sometimes plays your songs. There is not a theme, there is not a gimmick. It doesn’t scream at you to come in like it is neighbor AJ Bombers does. It’s an inconspicuous and small

place. So why does it draw such a crowd? On a Thursday night, it is the place to be, and it has been for a long time. I don’t have many family traditions, but both my uncle and my dad frequented the Plaza when they were in col-lege. Now it’s one of my favorite haunts. If you’re looking for good friends, cheap drinks and weird sci-fi movies playing on the bar’s TVs, Plaza is the hot spot on a Thursday.

Having lived on campus for more than two years, I have yet to fi nd a decent wing recipe that leaves me completely hooked, up until Wings Over Madison fl ew in and saved the day. Located at 279 University Ave., Wings Over Madison is your one-stop destination for amazing buffalo wings that truly deliver. When it came time to or-der, naturally I picked the tradi-

tional style, however Wings Over Madison does have a remarkable boneless option to please all you chicken nugget eaters out there. With more than 20 fl avors to choose from like Spicy Teriyaki, Honey Barbeque and Jamaican Jerk, the only problem you’ll have with this place is deciding which sauce to put on your wings. Just in case you don’t feel like “wing-ing” it, Wings Over Madison’s

Menu includes mouth watering wraps, ribs and waffl e fries that will be sure to cure those hunger pangs. Not only is this place open till 1 am or later, Wings Over Madison offers delivery for free, and they won’t even try to scam you with those darn surcharges ei-ther. I’m telling you Madison, this place will alter your wing eating experience forever.

When I walked into Melly Mell’s dining and catering in South Madison, I was instantly greeted by the smiling owner, Carmell Jackson, and her ador-able granddaughter. Truly a family business, Melly Mell’s atmosphere is wel-coming, inviting and makes you feel right at home. Car-mell wears a shirt that says “Where your mama at?” and explains to our group of college students that just because we are away from home, doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a meal cooked with love. “When you are here, I’m your mom” she

said, laughing. “I don’t serve soul food,” she ex-plained. “I serve food from my soul.” For our group, Car-mell prepared a sampling from her menu including fried chicken, fried catfi sh, and home-made macaroni and cheese. It was diffi cult to say which dish was the best as they were all deli-cious and obviously pre-pared from scratch. Some of the more popular meals in-clude “chicken and waffl es” or Melly Mell’s “famous fried tacos.” Carmell insists that every menu item has a story behind it (usually

involving family, of course). The menu options are exten-sive and breakfast is served all day long. Best of all, the food is extremely easy on a college kid’s wallet, with “daily special” meals that range from $6 to $10. Although the location is a little bit far for a car-less student (313 West Beltline Highway), the food and the atmosphere are defi nitely worth the trip. For more information and reviews about South Madison Res-taurants, visit the Savor South Madison website at http://www.savorsouth-madison.com.

Do not expect your din-ner or lunch selection at The Coliseum Bar and Banquet to be an easy one. Located on East Olin Avenue, this lively sports bar is home to some of the best food in Madison. Try the World Dairy Expo Burger for instance. This 10 oz. favorite is smothered withfive different cheeses, toppings of choice, and served on an asiago cheese bun. Can it get any cheesier? YES with the mound of cheese

curds you get on the side. If you’re looking for an appetizer, try the Waffle Nachos. Unlike your average nachos, toppings are piled high on a bed of waffle fries. Starting second semester, the restaurant will add a Sunday brunch to their menu. Don’t miss the full salad bar, carving station, and array of traditional breakfast and lunchspecials. Shuttles are available to all UW Madison men’s home football, basketball, and hockey

games…in case you have had a few too many Rooties. What are Rooties? Jägerbombs mixed with Sprecher Root beer instead of energy drink. Trust me, you won’t want to have just one. The Coliseum will also be the host bar site for the Polar Plunge in February. Make sureyou warm up with them after (or before) you jump into the frozen tundra we call LakeMendota. This bar is so hot, you’ll find an instant cure to your frostbitten woes.

WEDNESDAYBAR SPECIALS

Amy’s Cafe opened in 1981. It quickly became known as the place to get fresh sandwiches and salads in a sea of brats and burgers that engulfed State Street. With Faycal manning her kitchen, peo-ple fl ocked to Amy’s for a quick homemade meal. In the 90’s, with Murray, Hawk and Bregan as the resident bartenders, Amy’s swelled as a popular nightspot. The Hoofers, service industry workers, students, professors, townies and the international crowd, all called Amy’s home. By the early 2000’s, Faycal had opened Mediterranean Cafe, Murray and Hawk went off to start Hawks Bar and Grill and Bregan left and opened Weary Traveler. Many new restaurants came to the area and Amy’s lost its magnetic charm.

I n 2011, Amy’s got a “fresh” start with new owners Rick and Gwen (Paradise Lounge bartend-ers in the 90’s). After a a stint in Colorado, they had returned to Madison. In 2007, they bought The Argus, another fallen bar, and quickly turned it into a destination for great food, drink and atmos-phere. Having revived one Madison landmark, sites were set on Amy’s. They recruited Murray – he knew her potential and how to bring her back to life! With their commitment to quality ingredients, the food is fresh again. A renewed focus on local tap beers, an extensive selection of whiskeys, and a new crop of bartenders, makes this the spot to be once again.

Who is Amy? We think Amy is quintessential Madison – folks from her past, many whose names grace this cover, her present incarnation and her future aspirations. Most of all, Amy’s anyone who appreciates great food, drink and atmosphere in the heart of Madison. Here’s to you...Amy.
