An evaluation meeting on heldin “Making New Hope”

Md. Alsadi, Director, International Department of Human Rights and Darlene Mclvor, executive board member of Canadian Trade Union UNIFOR visited various interventions of Ship breaking project of OSHE Foundation in February 08, 2016 at Sitakunda, Chittagang.

As a part of the visit, they were participated in a seminar on occupational health & safety and health care seminar for ship breaking workers. The aim of the seminar was to aware ship breaking workers on occupational health and safety and legal rights to work. The seminar was held in OSHE Training and Welfare Centre, Vatiary, Sitakunda, Chittagong with 18 participants from different ship yard. M Shahidullah, president of Jahaj Bhanaga Shilpo Protisthan Somik Union also present there.

They also visited a out-door health camp organized in Baroawliya Government

An evaluation meeting held with beneficiaries of OSHE education support program in OSHE Foundation on last 23 January, 2016. There were 6 beneficiaries along with their guardians and executive director of OSHE A R Chowdhury Repon presented the meeting.

Tazreen Fashions Accident victim Zarina Begum’s daughter Sabina Yeasmin successfully promoted play to class one from Nishchintapur Model School. On the other hand, Shimu is studying now in class eight at Fulkucha Ali Azam High School in Melandaha, Jamalpur and she is now five in merit list. At present Mousumi attain first position of her class and promoted successfully in class six from Bachamara Govt. Primary School.

A Union Level Coordination Meetingheld in Agriculture Project

A union level coordination meeting was held with the ward organizers and leaders of different wards of 5 no. Shankhola Union Council under Agriculture Development Project of OSHE Foundation on last 28th February. The aim of the meeting was to capacity building of the agriculture workers and worker leaders that they would be extended capability to organize the workers and would be able to increase the memberships. There were 15 organizers from different wards of Shankhola union attended at the program.

Bangladesh Occupational Health, Safety and Environment Foundation (OSHE) organized a health camp with the aims to provide basic health care services, awareness about occupational health & safety, hygiene and ensure health services at the door steps of the waste pickers in 05 February, 2016 at OSHE Training and Welfare centre (OTWC), Matuail, Jatrabari. Dr. S M Morshed, Vice Chairperson of OSHE inaugurated the health camp.

OSHE provided free medical treatments, consultation and medicines to improve the workplace by personal health and safety practices of the informal waste pickers.

A number of 30 waste pickers received this service claiming pain of backbone, chest, waist and shoulder pain, vomiting, fever and headache, loss of appetite, glaucoma and burning sensation of eyes etc. Dr. Sadia Sabnam, General Health practitioner provided health care to the waste pickers of Matuail. As per the prescription, free medicines were distributed among the

beneficiaries. Among the beneficiaries three were referred to eye specialized hospital to remove glaucoma.

Dr. Sadia provided motivational and awareness rising advice on using personal protective equipment for prevention of occupational diseases and reduces accidents at workplace. She also gave education to concerning personal and work place related health, hygiene and hazard issues.

As part of adding value of this service, Doctor Sadia recommended to provide at least once in a month health camp service. In addition, for better output she recommended to raise the fund for medicine. Finally Dr. Morshed gave thank to the participants, doctor and others for their cooperation. well numbers of women workers. He also emerged to have 15-20 members in each group and the group members must have cordial relations, solidarity and ensure the communication among them. He also said that, any problems or challenges should overcome with organized efforts, so that they can easily overcome the situation.

The organizers from different wards raised multifarious problems and barriers from their sides on behalf of agriculture workers. By this program they have realized to the importance of organizing and also made their commitment for being organize and form agriculture workers group. They also made commitment to encourage other agriculture workers as well related people.

Health Camps for Ship Breaking Workers Awareness Raising Study Circle

Five Study Circles held in Agriculture Project

OSHE Foundation organized 4 nos. in-door health camps with the aims to provide basic health care services, awareness about occupational health & safety, hygiene and ensure health services at the door steps of the workers.

The health camps held on January 15 and February 05, 12, 19 at OSHE Training and Welfare Centre, Vatiary, Sitakunda, Chittagong. Dr. Tapan Kumar Nath, General Health practitioner of OSHE provided health care to the ship breaking workers. The total of 65 workers received the treatment. As per the prescription, free medicines were distributed among the beneficiaries.

Five Study Circle were held at OSHE Training and Welfare Centre at Chunarughat, Habigonj on 10, 17 January and 13, 21 and 29 February, 2015 with the aim to building solidarity among agriculture workers through organizing, fundamental rights at work and sensitizing about their health & safety. There were 87 participants including 27 female participated the study circles from different wards of different unions of Chunarughat Upazilla.

Asad Uddin, Program Officer of OSHE Conducted the study circles. During the session, they discussed to the participants on fundamental rights at work and organizing, member based organization (MBO). They also gave emphasize on using environment friendly pesticides and benefits of using natural fertilizers. They also gave importance on using personal protective equipment (PPE) and how to use agriculture work related PPE during spraying pest control etc. They gave education about how to wash hand and face before and after eating specially after doing

spraying pest control and such kind of jobs.

All the participants took part in the program spontaneously and actively. They shared their knowledge, views and practical experience to the discussant and other participants on occupational health and safety related hazard.

Weekly Study Circle for Matuail Waste PickersIn January-February, there were four study circles held in OSHE Training and Welfare Centre, Jatrabari, Dhaka with the aim of awareness on occupational health and safety, legal rights to work and special educational campaign on prevention of crane related accident in Matuail. There were 60 participants among them 55 female & 05 male waste pickers presented under the leadership of Anwara Begum, Md. Hakim, Md. Aizur Rahman and Rina, they are executive member of Matuail Waste Pickers Cooperative Association Ltd.

Weekly Study Circle for Aminbazar Waste Pickers

OSHE organized 08 study circles for the informal waste resource workers of Aminbazar Sanitary Landfill with the aim to sensitizing waste resource workers about occupational health and safety, organizing, vulnerability of HIV/AIDS and legal rights to work etc. Among the study circle four were held in Karmojibi Shishu School at Kunda, Aminbazar and rest number were held in community based on January-February 2016. A total of 120 waste resources workers (70 female) were participated in these sensitization discussions circle from Boilapur, Daspara, Gabtoli and Kunda areas.

OSHE Foundation form a network named Rana Plaza and Tazreen Fashions Accident Victims Network for the help of Rana Plaza and Tazreen Fashions injured workers. OSHE conducted several types of work for the betterment of the network members. One of the most important works of these is to help the meritorious children of the network members by education support program. This Program is started from the month of October 2014. Initial project duration was 1 year and 5 children were selected from the Children Database for being helped by this project.

Mim (07) is the daughter of Khaleda Begum, a decease worker of Ranaplaza tragedy. Now she is studying in class one at Raihan Institute in Savar. Unfortunately, she lost her father before Ranaplaza tragedy. At present her mother-in-law Sajeda Begum (66) is taking care.

Baitullah wants to be a police officer so that he can arrest the entire criminal and ensure his mother’s accused. Rana plaza accident victim Nazma’s son. At present he is studying in class three at Taaskerhaat Sunrise Public School in Badarganj, Rangpur.

Tajreen Fashions fire accident Jorina Begum’s daughter Sabina Yesmin is studying in class one at Nishchintapur Model School in Savar and passed successfully in play. She wants to be a doctor so that she can treat her mother who is suffering neck pain due to the accident.

Shimu is studying now in class eight at Fulkucha Ali Azam High School in Melandaha, Jamalpur. She is the daughter of Afroza Begum, victim of Tajreen Fashions fire accident. Her father’s name is Ayub Ali. Shimu want to be a model school teacher so that she can spread knowledge the poor villagers.
