From the Principal WELCOME I would like to welcome everyone back after the holidays. It was great to see all the children catching up with their friends and settling in to new grades so quickly on

Tuesday. We have a number of new students who have started this year and we extend a warm Bass Valley welcome to you all and your families. Along with our 38 new prep students we also welcome Mia Fayolle 1/2L and Sophie Fayolle 3/4M, Jack Taylor 1H and Jasmin Taylor 1/2L, Mia Slink 2H and Mitchell Slink 2H, Thomas Keher 1H, Callan Keher 2H, Reeve Keher 3/4D and Kelsey Keher 5/6R, Tiarna Law-rence 5/6W, Dylan Berry 5/6W, Raven Wolfe 2H and Seth Wolfe 5/6R, Oshen Genet 4/5M, Nataleigh Jones 3/4M and Taliyah Jones 3/4D, Gemma Shumack 2H and Oscar Shumack 5/6R. We hope you all settle in well and enjoy Bass Valley Primary School. We also have welcomed 3 new staff this year. Mrs Jessica Vanweynsberge (Mrs V) has returned to Bass Valley after having 12 months Family Leave. We welcome Jess back to the school and Prep V. Ms Samantha Dean has commenced with us in 3/4D and has made a very positive start to building connections with students, staff and parents at Bass Valley. Welcome Sam! Mrs Emma Harris has taken over the role of Assistant Principal within the school. Emma will be involved in student welfare and wellbeing and also sharing her expertise in maths by supporting this program in the grade 3-6 area. Emma looks forward to meeting and getting to know our students and families. Welcome! SAFETY FIRST Morning drop off and afternoon pick ups are the most dangerous times of the day for children with buses and busy Corinella Road. We ask parents to observe the following safety procedures: ● All children (buses, pick up and after school care) MUST be marked off a checklist before leaving by an adult. If you are changing normal arrangements please inform the office so lists can be modified. Parental permission must be given by a child’s parents if they are being picked up by someone different – please inform the office.

● Cars are not to use the bus loop for drop offs or parking at any time ● Children SHOULD NOT be dropped off on the opposite side of the road to the school ● Staff carpark is for staff only – please do not walk children through this area SWIMMING PROGRAM

The swimming program will commence from next Monday. Students will do swimming in their P.E. sessions all of Term 1. Please see the timetable on the next page for days and times of swimming. Students need to bring their bathers, rashy & towel in a plastic bag on these occasions.

SCHOOL CONTRIBUTION/CSEF APPLICATIONS A note regarding the School Contribution Scheme is going home with this newsletter. We would like to thank those families very much who have already paid their fees. We will be sending home statements tomorrow. The essential items and swimming levy need to be paid by 23rd Febru-ary. If the swimming levy is not paid by this date your child will not be able to continue in the swimming program in March. If you have a concession card you can apply for the CSEF which can then be used to pay the swimming levy. CANTEEN Canteen will commence next Thursday. Thank you very much to those people who have volunteered to help. You will get a roster tomorrow. A price list is going home today.

STORY TIME

Storytime will begin at Bass Valley Primary School next

Wednesday from 2.30—3.15pm. Story time will run week-

ly and is for pre schoolers, toddlers and babies. You are

never too young (or too old) to listen to great stories, join in

finger plays, rhyme and songs. It’s free, it’s fun and it builds

important literacy skills. So join Dorene in the school library.

MUSIC OPPORTUNITY

We are very pleased to be able to offer private instrumen-

tal lessons to students for piano/keyboard and guitar. Mr

Steve Durie is a talented musician and experienced tutor

who will conduct lessons during the school day for parents

who elect to take up this option. Please enquire at school

office if you require further information.

LOST ITEM

A silver bracelet with the name Mikayla engraved on it was

lost yesterday. If anyone has picked it up could it be re-

turned to the office.

SWIMMING TIMETABLE FOR TERM 1

SCHOOL BBQ and POOL NIGHT

We would like to invite everyone to our annual get to-gether at the school pool on Tuesday 20th February from 4.30-6.00pm. This is an informal night and a great op-portunity to connect to other families and teachers while the kids have a swim. Please put this on your calendar at home. There will be a free BBQ on the night. Parents must attend with their children and while we will have a life-guard on duty, it is parent’s responsibility to supervise their children in the water. ASSEMBLY Assemblies will be held fortnightly in the school gymnasi-um. The first assembly will be held on Tuesday 13th Feb-ruary beginning at 2.50pm. The student leadership badges will be presented during this assembly. Parents and friends are invited to come along to all assemblies. STUDENT/PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS This year students will attend the interviews with parents to empower students to take greater responsibility and ownership of their learning. The interviews will be held on Tuesday 20th March in the afternoon/evening. More in-formation to follow. WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP YOUR CHILD SUCCEED AT SCHOOL

●It is really important that the school and child’s family become a partnership in their learning. What does that mean? Supporting each other, communicating, being in-volved and sharing the learning experiences at home and at school.

●Attend school regularly – the average days absent for a child for a whole year should not exceed 13. There is a strong correlation between academic success and attend-

ance.

●Be on time – classes begin at 9.00. Being late disrupts your child, the teacher and the other students.

●Provide a healthy snack and lunch each day

●Make sure your child is in correct school uniform

●Ensure routine for bed/sleep time

●Let us know if there is any problem!

It is important that parents do not go directly to rooms if

arriving after the bell. Students must be signed in at the

front office and they will then be taken to their room. It is

not appropriate for parents to go to the classrooms at

this time. Thank you for being considerate of others.

As part of this Festival there will be a Junior Art Competition for Primary school stu-dents. The categories are Prep, Grade 1 & 2, Grade 3 & 4, Grade 5 & 6. Materials to be used can be pencil, painting, pastels, or recycled or waste materials from the marine environment. There will be 3 prizes in each category and each artist will re-ceive a Certificate of Participation. All artwork submitted will be displayed at the Festival. Winners will be announced at the Festival on Saturday, 3rd March at the Rhyll Yacht Club at 11am.

Priscilla is also an active AMEB examiner and loves the happy process of preparation and mutual sense of accom-plishment that results from excellence in presentation.
