Vice-Chancellors of universities in South Africa have identified hunger on campus as a major problem for increasing numbers of students and a major obstacle to graduation. Get Me To Graduation was created to remove major barriers to graduation, namely hunger and psychosocial issues.

Its first initiative is to tackle hunger on campus by providing R1 000 per month to deserving students. Since April 2016, the Programme has disbursed almost R3 million to students at the universities of Johannesburg, North-West and Limpopo.

“You can smell the hunger in the lecture theatres.” ~ Nomsa Mazwai, Former Student Representative Council President at the University of Fort Hare and a Fullbright Scholar

There is a huge focus on university fees in South Africa currently, but there is another important issue that cannot be overlooked -

students are going to classes on empty stomachs.

Reduce the student dropout rate by helping more students to reach their goal of graduating.

Help feed a student!

stories from the students

The food allowance that has been granted to us has predominantly helped us to function like every other student with financial support; it allowed us a great deal of improvement in our studies and enticed the need to participate in diverse sports activities.

- Makurube Solomon

I no longer go to bed on an empty stomach.

- Dieketseng Ramaseli

i now have access to grocery shops where i can buy myself food and even help at home. My mother was so happy when I told her no need to stress about buying me food.

I don’t have to stay up all night selling cigarettes at res now. I can focus on my studies because I have enough to eat (not only canned fish and beans but decent food).
