We are committed to creating value from coal safely and responsibly, growing our business through our attractive project pipeline and investing in the communities in which we operate.

Currently we operate six mines across Queensland and New South Wales as well as the Peace River metallurgical coal mine in British Columbia, Canada. We are also leading the development of four Greenfield projects: Drayton South, Dartbrook, Moranbah South and Grosvenor.

Our team consists of more than 3,500 permanent employees and 1,500 contractors. These talented mining professionals enable us to produce approximately 30 million tonnes of coal annually for steel-making customers and power producers throughout the world.

Our Surveyors play a critical role within Anglo American, contributing at every stage of the value chain from mine planning through to production operations and quality control. As a future Surveyor, you will play a key role in the success of the company’s mining operations.

Throughout the course of your Graduate Programme you will receive support towards your Surveyors registration and experience in:

SURVEYING

I JOINED ANGLO AMERICAN AFTER COMPLETING VACATION WORK AT GRASSTREE MINE. ANGLO AMERICAN’S CAPCOAL OPERATIONS ARE UNIQUE, IN THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL SITES THAT DIFFER IN MINING METHODS AND GEOLOGY. GRADUATE SURVEYORS ARE MENTORED THROUGH THE MINE SURVEYING REGISTRATION PROCESS, AN OPPORTUNITY THAT IS HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER.

Our Geologists play a critical role in the development of a deeper understanding of the resources we mine as well as the geological conditions and hazards that may impact upon mining, processing and consumption of these resources. As a future Geologist, you will play a key role in the success of the company’s mining operations.

You will be involved in the exploration activities and resource evaluation that forms the basis of mine planning and scheduling as well as the providing operational geology services to the mining operation where you will be primarily focused on the recognition, prediction and mitigation of geological hazards as well as the prediction and monitoring of production quality.

Throughout the course of your Graduate Programme you will be involved in:

• Exploration safety training;• Risk assessment and management and root cause

analysis training;• Contract management training;• Introduction to the management of tenure, native title

and cultural heritage;• Environmental awareness for exploration;• Exploration activities (geological, geotechnical

logging, sampling and data management);• Use and interpretation of surface and down-hole

geophysics;• Supervision of exploration teams;• Training in the use of exert systems (acQuire; Minex,

Minscape);• Training in the use of gis systems (Mapinfo);• Introduction to coal quality and utilisation;• Operational geology (data collection, evaluation,

presentation and communication of results);• Hazard identification and mapping;• Volumetric and time-based reconciliations of

‘as mined’ against planned; and• Safety leadership training.

GEOLOGY

Our Process Engineers play a critical role within Anglo American, contributing at every stage of the value chain from raw coal stockpiles all the way to the end user. It is essential to our business that high-quality, in-specification product is delivered to our customers on time, while yields are maximised and costs kept under control.

You will have the opportunity to gain operational experience within Anglo American’s coal handling and processing plants including:

• Operation of coal processing plants;• Management and commissioning of process

improvement projects;• Resolution of process design issues;• Design and review of process control systems; and• Management of staff, contractors and consultants.

Throughout the course of your Graduate Programme you will receive experience in:

• Risk assessment and management and root cause analysis training;

• Raw coal handling system;• De-sliming, coarse coal and fine coal circuits;• Product handling system;• Rejects and tailings disposal;• Water, magnetite and reagent supply circuit;• Plant control room operation;• Train load-out;• Sampling and analysis;• Logistics and quality control;• Marketing and coal utilisation;• Project investigation and management; and• Safety leadership training.

Our Electrical Engineers play a critical role within Anglo American, contributing at every stage of the value chain from mine planning through to production operations and quality control. The company’s operations are built on the foundations of sound engineering practice and we can all contribute to building a strong company through developing excellence in engineering disciplines. As a future Electrical Engineer, you will play a key role in the success of the company’s mining operations.

Our Graduate Programme develops Engineering Graduates into experienced project engineering and maintenance practitioners. The experience gained at our operations can lead to project and maintenance engineering, scheduling and planning, and eventually supervisory and maintenance management roles. Other opportunities include business improvement, compliance and reliability engineering, overhaul and new project engineering and management.

Throughout the course of your Graduate Programme you will learn about:

Our Safety and Health professionals are tasked with providing strategic operational support and guidance to all Anglo American mining operations, including the Brisbane Corporate Office, projects and exploration units. Their roles are critical to the ongoing vision of achieving Zero Harm in our current and future operations. As a Safety and Health professional, you will play a key role in the success of the company’s mining operations.

Throughout the course of your Graduate Programme you will:

• Contribute to the implementation and monitoring of the Target Zero Action Plans and Zero Harm initiatives;

• Develop risk management skills and lead risk assessments;• Conduct incident investigations, analyse trends and develop initiatives to

prevent reoccurrence;• Participate in the management of domestic and global projects and

initiatives such as the Safety Leadership Programme, the Global Target Zero Action Plan and the Fatal Risk Standards;

• Develop, maintain and continuously improve the Safety, Health, Environment and Community Management System (SHECMS) policies and standards (through auditing);

• Actively coordinate S&H data management and reporting through the use of the Anglo American reporting tool, SiteSafe Impact (reporting and analysis database);

• Share S&H data between all Metallurgical Coal operations, for example participating in the Significant Incident Video Conference;

• Participate as an active member of Safety, Health and Environment work groups and committees; and

• Receive safety leadership training.

Our Environmental Advisors play a critical role in the sound environmental management of all Anglo American’s operations. The primary role of an Environmental Advisor is to guide other personnel on steps that need to be taken to protect environmental values. They also manage the development of environmental management plans, monitoring and reporting environmental performance, and meeting legislative requirements. As a future Environmental Advisor, you will play a key role in the success of the company’s mining operations and become an important member of the Metallurgical Coal Environmental team.

You will receive invaluable exposure to an array of environmental management issues including environmental impact studies, incorporation of environmental impact controls into mine design, environmental protection during mine operation and mine closure. During the Programme you will develop a detailed understanding of measures needed to protect environmental values that may be affected by coal mining, such as water resources (surface and groundwater), air quality (including greenhouse gas emissions), land capability, flora and fauna (biodiversity) and waste management.

Throughout the course of your Graduate Programme you will actively participate in:

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

COMMERCIALOur Commercial professionals play a critical role within Anglo American.

You will develop a broad understanding of the business right through from the mining and production side (both open cut and underground), to marketing our product to customers, addressing all the commercial requisites to support effective running of the business.

From there your expertise can be developed in any of our commercial areas including technical finance accounting, business performance and planning, project accounting, business improvement, risk management, taxation, procurement and supply chain services and shared services inclusive of financial accounting, cash management and accounts payable.

You will work in various roles, across different workplaces and environments, gaining new experiences to steer your longer term career ambitions – whether that be a Corporate Accountant, Marketing Support Officer, Legal and Contracts Officers or Business Improvement Officer, as a stepping stone to becoming a Financial Controller, Commercial Manager at a mine site or a Supply Commodity Manager.

You will be exposed to the commercial and accounting practices of a large multi-national corporation that operates across the globe. Depending on your discipline, experiences you will gain during your Graduate Programme will include:

• Financial and management accounting including completion of company and business unit accounts and Key Performance Indicator reporting;

• Cost accounting for mines and projects;• Cash flow management and analysis;• Tax return preparation for G.S.T, F.B.T and company tax;• Contract negotiation and management with suppliers;• Risk management and audit;• Business planning and business improvement;• Marketing logistics and administration;• Supervisory training, where applicable;• Safety leadership training; and• Accounting graduates will be mentored through either the Certified

Practicing Accountant or Chartered Accountant programmes.
