The Bear facts Busy bears quilt guild Sept 2013 EDITOR’S EPISTLE WOW…..what a month………..and what a really good Quilt Show…………..…...we still had a good attendance regardless of our “two seasons in Big Bear...winter and construction!”. We couldn’t have done it without the help from many of our members AND the husbands. The quilts were outstanding, the Boutique was fabulous, the music from Denise was lovely. Who could ask for anything more? The Opportunity Quilt lived up to our usual excellence and the baskets were wonderful. The Quilt for next year is already in the works and the programs are set for 2014. So as you can see, our agenda is ongoing………..no rest for us! Please respond to our nominating committee…...we need input from everyone! Jacqué Holmes Kay Higdon DINNER BEFORE THE MEETING Hi Ladies, the dinner before the meeting will once again at the Sonora Cantina. We had an excellent turn out last month with twenty people showing up. We all had a great time, the food and the service were both GREAT! I will have the survey for what restaurants everyone would like to try, available at the meeting. Starting in October, I will be choosing different places. I’ll be trying to go to places that offer more “comfort” food as our days start to grow cooler. Please try and let me know if you will be able to make the dinner so I can let the restaurant know Happy Stitching Mary Price 909-584-0050 [email protected] PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Fellow Quilters, I am truly amazed at the talent our guild members possess! Thank you to Sandi Cannarella for a terrific job of chairing our “Silver Jubilee Quilt Show”. And to all the chairpersons, their committee members and all the member’s husbands who worked so hard and gave of their time. It was a huge success once again. Pick up a copy of The Grizzly newspaper to see what’s on the front page! Thank you to our Founding Members for 25 years of service to our community! We have our Red, White and Blue Sew & Show on Sept 27 & 28. This is a workshop which is open for Public viewing to show how we honor our military heroes! Let’s all come out and show our support! COMFORT QUILTS Comfort quilts for Doves were received during August from Sue Bost, Denise Schiavone, Ina Niday, Linda Coulter and Mary Price. And Maggie Regalado donated a large quilt top, which will also be finished and sent to Doves. Thank you to you all! A salute to Sandi Cannarella and Mary Price, who added to our Wounded Warriors quilt supply when they each turned in a patriotic quilt at the August general meeting! These quilts will be displayed during our RED, WHITE AND BLUE SEW AND SHOW on September 27th and 28th before they are sent to Afghanistan. The Sisterhood Sew-In held on August 20 was fun and productive, as usual. We worked together adding labels to Wounded Warriors quilts, sewing up stripy quilt tops, stitching bindings and cutting squares in preparation for upcoming Comfort Quilt projects. Thanks, Sister, for attending! I hope more of you can join us next time, because many hands make light work! Sue Hart did a wonderful job organizing our bright and impressive Philanthropy exhibit at the quilt show last week. As a result of the display, we were pleased to receive donations of both fabric ad batting from show attendees. It’s gratifying to realize that the public is supporting the good works we are doing! I’m so proud to be a member of this guild. Feel free to contact my if you need fabric, batting or assistance for y our 2013 comfort quilt project. [email protected] 909/806-0436

CUT-UPS—Our August meeting was held at Susan Meyers. We brought together our items for our “Kitchen Basket”...and left it to Susan to work her magic in putting it all together. Thanks for a job well done, Susan! Our Sept 11 meeting will be held at Janet Walz’s at 10am . Janet wants to discuss possible projects that we might do as a group. We welcome visi-tors. Jeannie

HAPPY HEARTS– We had our last official get-together with a lunch at Nottingham’s. Our group has lost many members off the hill and gotten too small to be effective, so we are going to join the other mini groups and have fun with them instead. Carol Henderson

STITCHY FIGERS–August provided us with fabulous weather so we took advantage of it, spending time on Sue Merritt’s lovely patio on the 9th. And at my house on the 23rd, we started indoors, but went outside at lunchtime. Ann McNichol, Cindy Young and Lys Axel-son joined us for the day and we hope to see them at our future meetings as well. We try to meet on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month. Our next get-to–gether will beat Loretta’s on September 13th. On the 27th we will meet at the Red, White & Blue Sew and Show to help make quilts for Wounded

2013 QUILT SHOW Our show has been a great success, yet again! There were many happy people and many winners of our baskets, guessing game prizes and our fabulous Opportunity Quilt. Vendors were happy, too. We sold a multitude of quilts and a whole lot of wonderful items from our Boutique. As our judge repeatedly stated last week, the quilts were beautiful and our Show was well attended by all who know the quality of our work. Our guests were very interested in our quilts and asked many questions about their construction and quilting. The hourly door prizes were fantastic and eagerly awaited by our visitors. We thank our wonderful vendors for their contributions to the door prize event. In addition, Denise Schiavone serenaded us with her beautiful music so skillfully Delivered. All in all, a big SUCCESS! Many, many thanks to all of you who contributed to our Show, you made it the success it was. We will be having our post-show review soon to prepare for the next year already.

See you next guild meeting., Sandi Cannarella

BASKETS I want to thank everyone who helped with the basket table during the show. We had a lot of great gals selling like mad the tickets for all of the beautiful baskets. Our winners were Sharon C, the fat quarter basket; Virginia Hendra, the Garden basket; Kay McCain, the Holiday Kitchen basket; Mike (our Vendor with the baskets and wool), Emergency Preparedness basket and Jeanne Mazzacane, our Sewing basket. The Sewing basket received the most tickets at 506. The Garden basket had 458 tickets, the Emergency Preparedness had 364, the Fat Quarter basket came in next with 297 and the Kitchen Holiday had 228. Over all, I think all of the baskets were a big hit and desired by all. Thanks again for everyone’s help. Susan Meyers
