For District 63 to be distinguished, the following items need to be completed in the next 5 weeks: *12 new clubs need to charter *593 membership payments need to be made *29 Competent Communicator designations need to filed If just 13% of District 63 members who have “Energized Their Future” can impact so many people in multiple ways, think about the District could accomplish if each of you reading this newsletter took the necessary step to “Energize Your Future” by completing your next Toastmaster designation before June 30th. May the rest of the 2010-2011 Toastmasters year continue to provide ways for you to: “ENERGIZE YOUR FUTURE while we are ACHIEVING GREATNESS
TOGETHER!”
Fellow Toastmasters, Congratulations and thank you to each member who achieved one or more Toastmaster designations so far. With only 5 more weeks in this Toastmasters year, I want to share how District 63 has benefited because you took the steps to “Energize Your Future”. As of Friday, 5/20/2011, District 63 has achieved a grand total of: 255 combined education and leadership awards These awards have been achieved by 200 individual members (each member only counted once no matter how many goals achieved) in 70 different clubs (that’s 83% of District 63 clubs). In addition to the benefits that each member received by accomplishing their goal, the District has been impacted in the following ways: 20 clubs have 20 or more
members and have achieved the 5 or more of their goals necessary to be recognized as a Distinguished or higher club. Along with the extra pride the members have in belonging to a Distinguished or higher club, it gave 140 club officers the opportunity to successfully achieve their club goal. 5 clubs have 20 or more members and have achieved 3 or 4 goals so far. They only need 1 or 2 goals to obtain distinguished status. Once these goals are achieved, it will impact the members and another 35 club officers will achieve their club goals 3 Areas have achieved the necessary goals to be recognized as Distinguished or above. (3 more individuals to receive recognition because our individual members achieved theirs) Where 200 members is only about 13% of District 63 membership, that 13% impacted 83% of the clubs in District 63!

Summer TLI June 18th, Cookeville - Don Bittick
One of the requirements for getting credit for being a club officer is to attend officer training. The first opportunity for incoming club officers to be trained will be on June 18th at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, TN. We are very excited about the club officer training this year as it will be a full day of learning and having fun. Just to set expectations, the make-up TLI’s will also be full day sessions, so I encourage every incoming officer to do their best to attend the TLI in Cookeville as it will give you an opportunity to network and learn from officers
across the district. The agenda and registration form are posted on the web site. In preparation for the summer TLI, we would like to ask an the highest ranking officer from each club to bring their club’s membership roster, their members goals for the year, their member achievements to date, a blank club success plan worksheet and blank DCP form to this training. At the training, we will have a workshop on filling out the success plan worksheet and DCP form. The
goal is for each club to start the year with their plan in place. But it doesn’t end there. These documents should be reviewed and if necessary, adjusted throughout the year. There are plenty of communication and leadership opportunities available at the summer TLI. We are looking for educational session facilitators, officer breakout facilitators, room monitors/timers, help with printing, and help with the snacks. Please let me know if you are interested in helping with this training.

What a year it has been!! We have a few short weeks to go and we are nearing our education and leadership goals. I never cease to be amazed at this group in the way you “dig in,” working together to reach your goals. As of the writing of this article you have surpassed the goal for Advanced Communicator completions. You have also far exceeded the goal of 89 Leadership completions. We
are still working on the Competent Communicator goal of 141; at the writing of this article we are currently only 30 away…you might say only 28 as I know of at least 2 more coming in during the next few days. We still have about five weeks remaining and I have no doubt that you will meet this goal as well. I want you to know how much I appreciate your efforts in this area. Many clubs have already elected club officers for the
upcoming year and many more will be doing so over the next several weeks. Don’t forget the upcoming Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI) to be held at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville on June 18…we expect to see all of our club and district officers at this event. Thanks, too, to the officers throughout our District who strive to learn all they can as they assume their roles as leaders with servant hearts.

and learn from district officers across the district. The agenda will be posted on the web site very soon. In preparation for the district officer training, I would like to ask each of the incoming Area and Division Governors to bring a list of their clubs, a list of officers for each club, and a blank Distinguished Area/Division worksheet. At the training, we will have a workshop on filling out the Distinguished Area/Division worksheets. The goal is for each district officer to start the year with their plan in place.

Mark your calendars now for the Fall Conference October 14 - 15, 2011
Glenstone Lodge
Gatlinburg, TN
It’s going to be fabulous. The Glenstone took
fantastic care of us last time we were there and we’re excited to be going back.
We will be posting directions as the conference
gets closer so we can get you there without the traffic
headaches! I hear there’s going to be a bus going from
Nashville as well with a chance to participate in
Table Topics and a Speechathon!
Award Submissions
When you submit awards for members in your club, it’s always a good idea to
check the “Education Achievements (Current
Year)” report a few days later to ensure it has been
processed. If there is a “P” in front of it, that
means it’s pending and there’s a problem you need to follow up on.
Hopefully your club has already elected new officers. If not, you’ve started the process and you’re really close to elections. I know, I know, the year isn’t over yet and you might think you have plenty of time but I’m going to give you 3 reasons why time is of the essence here:
Meals for the TLI are only guaranteed if you register by June 1st. Said TLI is June 18th, officers need time to ensure they can mark their calendars so they don’t miss out on the fantastic training planned and get your club(s) credit towards next
year’s DCP at the same time. Lastly, club officer lists must be submitted to TI prior to July 1 to be considered on-time. This also gets your club a tick mark on next year’s DCP plan. Plus if you don't wait until the last minute it doesn’t interfere with July 4th plans.
Club Officer Elections and Submissions - Kristi Coleman
It has been an honor to have
served our district as the LGM
for the last 11 months. It has
been a very rewarding
experience for me as I’ve
gotten to work with several new
and prospective clubs. I’ve
also met and gotten to know
several outstanding
Toastmasters, not just across
the district, but around the
world.
I was also blessed to have been
elected as the LGET for the
coming Toastmasters year. As
a result, this truly is a time of
transition as I continue to work
very hard with the other district
leaders to charter new clubs,
bring in new members, plan the
summer TLI (scheduled for
July 18th at Tennessee Tech
University in Cookeville), and
plan the Area and Division
Governors training that will be
held at the DEC meeting on
July 16th in Crossville.
Some people might say that
being a district officer is too
time-consuming, but I would
say that it has been worth every
minute of my time. It is very
rewarding to see others
improve their communication
skills, leadership skills, and
confidence. I especially enjoy
watching others go beyond
their club to help with
workshops, TLI’s, conferences,
and visiting other clubs. I
would encourage each and
every one of you to go beyond
your club and shadow a district
officer, volunteer to help with a
district event, visit other clubs,
and serve as a district officer.

Quit Holding Out - Kristi Coleman
One of the things my club was taught early on was to turn in the awards necessary to achieve the Distinguished Club Program goals and then hold the rest of the awards our club finished for the remainder of the year until the following Toastmaster began. By doing this, we would submit them under the new year and have a head start on the Distinguished Club Program for the new year. I have changed the mentality in my club but there are other clubs still following this practice. Is your club one of them? Does anyone see the problem with this logic? First and foremost - if I’m the member that has worked really hard to complete a designation, why should I have to wait for recognition? We always put the member first or we should be doing so. How is making them wait or hold back putting them first?
Second - Why are you holding awards? If you’re holding awards at the end of every year, it means you capable of so much more. Why not be an overachiever? If you’re holding awards so that the club can do the bare minimum, isn’t it time to step up? When did anyone ever really realize their potential by scraping by? Third - Did you know you can get recognition and an award at the Fall Conference if you go above and beyond? While you’re holding out, you’re club is missing out on an award and a chance to add store merchandise to the club inventory that could then be used for more educational goals. Lastly - Your club could potentially be the reason your Area, Division or even the District isn’t Distinguished. Yes,
you could have that much power. Each level has goals to meet and you impact whether those goals are met. For example - If your club doesn’t submit earned CC’s, the Area Governor could possibly not have enough CC’s to be Distinguished. If the Division doesn’t have enough Distinguished Areas, they aren’t Distinguished. Districts need x number of CC’s every year as part of their plan as well. Turn in awards when they are completed and be proud to know that your members are getting the recognition they deserve, your club is getting the recognition it deserves, and you help meet goals across the board. If you can get extra awards this year, don’t short change yourself. Turn them in. If you did it this year, you can do it again next year!
