As I write this the spring and summer rally season is starting. I hope to see many BAC members at one of the great BAC ral-lies that are planned in the upcoming year. The Energizer Beaver

Rally will be the first attempt by the BAC to have a “Rally-within-a-Rally” at a National FMCA Convention. The Rally Masters Kathy and Don DuCharme have been working very hard to make it a success. The “Rally-within-a-Rally” concept has great potential for a cost effective and enjoyable rally. The BAC leadership intends to expand upon the concept with the cooperation of FMCA if possible.

There are many fun and interesting rallies coming up for the spring and summer that have been planned for your enjoyment. They start with the ”Home with the Hales” rally (May 31 to June 5) and progress through Kansas to Wyo-ming, Colorado, Montana, Idaho, and on to the Wash-ington and Oregon rallies including the BAC(k) to the Future Rally and ending with the Albuquerque Bal-

loon Fiesta rally “Aloft in Albuquerque” (October 8-13).

The highlight of the summer rally season promises to be the BAC(k) to the Future Rally (Sept. 11-15) in Canyonville Oregon that will be a celebration of the 30th anniversary of BAC. There are 130 coaches reg-istered for the rally at this time, and it promises to be a great rally with a lot of activities and delicious food. The location for the rally will be the Seven Feathers Casino and RV Resort - the highest rated RV Resort in the state of Oregon. The Rally Masters Mike and Donna Humble and their Co-Rally Masters have been working on this rally for over a year, and I want to thank them for all of their hard work.

The BAC Board will meet at the Seven Feathers resort on September 10th for our semi-annual business meeting. There are several very im-portant matters that will be discussed in regards to the future direction of BAC, and if you as a member have a concern that you think needs to be addressed by the Board, please contact me or your VP as soon as possible. The meeting is open to all BAC members, space permitting. Remember that the BAC is your club, and your wishes and desires as BAC members are very important to all Board members. So please com-municate your opinions to me or your VP so that we can take them into consideration in all votes that are taken.

Lamar, Al, and Roy Mueller talked with owner Ed Covington, and Roy even toured the facilities. They were all very impressed. RVFogDr can take care of those nasty leaking window seals and can do all kinds of body work. Try them out, and be sure to tell them BAC sent you.

It is now summer and the start of rally sea-son in the Pacific NW. There are five rallies scheduled in Region 1 including the BAC 30th Anniversary International Rally. The great news is that all the rallies are full with wait lists started. These are going to be some fantastic rallies including Chasing Whales in Anacortes, Washington with Bill and BJ Sprague rally masters; Panhandle Potpour-ri in Blanchard Idaho with Brinley Thomas and Charles Bentley, rally masters; Spruce Goose in McMinnville, Oregon with Mike and Donna Humble, rally masters; and Sit N Bull 2 in Grants Pass, Oregon with Jim and Gerda Bull, rally masters.

Now for the bad news. There are no rallies scheduled for 2014. Members interested in being rally masters should contact me or Bill Sprague to discuss planning a rally. There is a rally master handbook to help lead you through the preparation. It really takes just an idea, a little planning, and some cost data and a rally falls into place fairly easily. For those of you attending BAC(k) to the Future at Seven Feathers there are plans to have a workshop to

help with putting on rallies.

BAC(k) to the Future is shaping up nicely. Your rally master team of Mike and Donna Hum-ble, Mike and Brenda Hatfield, and Bill and BJ Sprague are working to make this a memo-rable rally, celebrating 30 years of BAC and looking to what the future will bring. There will be display coaches, vendors, seminars, great food and entertainment, along with the great fellowship shared by BAC members. The rally was recently increased to 130 coaches, and those spots are all full, but the wait list is short, so the chances of getting in, even at this late date, are good.

In addition to rallies, don’t overlook the Camping Circles. These are informal gather-ings with no planned activities. If you are not already signed up, information is available on the BAC website as how to join or post a gathering. If you are going to be camping somewhere, and would be interested in hav-ing other Beavers join you, then just go to the BAC website, and send an e-mail to all who are signed up. If you have any questions you may contact me or Bill Sprague.

I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming rally or camping circle.Safe Travels,

Mike

New MembersWe welcome another wonderful group of New Members to the Beaver Ambassador Club. We hope that each of you will soon be able to start enjoying some of the many features of the club, and will find a spe-cial place here, as have many before you. The rallies described in this issue, are put on by volunteer Rally Masters who want to share the highlights of their area with you, and give you the opportunity to meet like-minded travelers. Attend one, and we are sure you will be impressed by the friendly, helpful spirit of our club. And, speaking of helpful, be sure you check out the Forum, at beaveramb.org. Got a problem with your coach? Want to find out where to get a part you need? Want to see how people have modified their coaches? Or do you just want to get an idea of where to go? It’s time to write my article and unfor-tunately there is not much to report on since the last article. There are no

rallies scheduled in our region this sum-mer, but there are many in other regions. Most are scheduled around the FMCA 88th Family Reunion rally in Gillette, Wyoming. Our region’s next rally, Draft Horse Classic II, starts the 19th of Sep-tember. As I write this, the rally is full, but there may be cancellations. Call John Shurtz (714 473-4471) for the latest in-formation. Last year’s rally was a great success, and this one promises to be even more fun. Imagine 40 or more Beavers in the grandstands cheering for their favor-ite horse or team as the announcer recog-nizes the “THE BEAVER GROUP”.

Immediately after the Draft Horse is the Warren’s Beavers To Balloons rally. It’s a rolling rally that starts on Septem-ber 23rd at the French Camp RV & Golf Park and ends on October 4th in Acoma, New Mexico. You have the option of go-ing from start to finish or just part way. If you don’t plan on doing the full route you must let Roy know before he gives the campgrounds the final counts, and your fee will be adjusted.

We now have Rally Masters for the annual Christmas rally. Tim and Diana Bentley agreed to take the position if Jim and Natasha Nichols agreed to cook two full breakfasts. The deal was made, and with the help of Co-Rally Masters Larry and Wilma Pound, I know they will give us a rally we will all enjoy. The rally, “Christ-mas A La Carte”, will focus on getting together and sharing the holiday season with your Beaver friends. Your rally fee will include 3 nights camping at the luxu-rious Bakersfield RV Resort, 2 full break-fasts, one big continental breakfast, and 2 dinners. The a la carte events are in the planning stages as I write this.

In January we have the annual Beaver Se-curity and Lobster Boil rally led by Hosts Mandy and Violet Canales and Co-Hosts Chuck and Jan Rendall. Check the Beaver Tales for details and sign up for these ral-lies. You will not be disappointed.

Dorothy and I are planning another Grand Circle Rally for September 2014. Brinley Thomas and Charles Bentley have agreed to be Co-Rally Masters. It will be similar to the 2009 Grand Circle Rally, except there will be only one group of 12 coaches. Again we plan to visit 8 na-tional parks: Zion, Bryce, Capital Reef, Arches, Canyonlands, Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, and Grand Canyon’s North and South Rims. There are also numerous Na-tional Monuments and other attractions along the route. We are in the early plan-ning stage and will wait until the next BT before posting the rally ad. Remember, we can’t take any sign-ups until the rally is posted in the Beaver Tales and mailed.

In late August we will be leaving for Pan-handle Potpourri, BAC(k) to the Future BAC International, and Beavers to Bal-loons rallies. Dorothy and I hope to see many of you at one these rallies.

Hello from wet, cold Region 3. Obvi-ously no rallies have occurred in the region since the last report. It has

been a miserable winter for those of us who were stuck in the area. It finally quit snowing, and the precipitation changed to rain. Many of you have undoubtedly read of the wide-spread flooding that we are dealing with at the moment. Perhaps someone in the region would like to host a winter rally one of these years. It would be different, and who knows, it might be fun.

We have been busy planning the summer schedule, particularly the Gillette rally. Plans are going well. We currently have 55 coaches registered and, of course, will be providing security for the 50th Anniversary FMCA ral-ly. We continue to deal with communication issues between the FMCA volunteer leader-ship and staff, but hopefully all have been re-solved. We are looking forward to a fun En-ergizer Beavers rally as well as an exceptional FMCA Anniversary event. We have a couple of surprises planned, and look forward to see-ing you all in Gillette.

We know the Cowboy Up rally, hosted by the Nichols and Maloofs, which immediately follows the Gillette rally, is going to be well attended. We look forward to a fun-packed rally in Rawlins, Wyoming.

Registration for the Rockin’ Rockies rally, scheduled for July 9 – 13 in Garrison, Mon-tana is disappointing at the present time. Rally masters Howard and Bonnie Klaver have planned a great, fun-filled event as de-scribed on page 14 of the Beaver Tales. We re-ally hope that it will not be necessary to cancel this rally, but we need at least five more regis-trants to make the numbers work. If anyone is planning on being in the area at this time, please consider attending.

The remaining rally for Region 3 is The Bull

Thing, being hosted by first time rally mas-ters, Conrad and Millie Clementson. At the moment this rally is at capacity, but the wait-ing list is short. We look forward to exciting bull riding and a great time in Eureka, Mon-tana from August 22nd to the 26th.

There are no rallies as yet scheduled in Re-gion 3 for 2014. One is being discussed and hopefully will come to fruition. Brent and Ju-lie Lauderdale and we are looking into one to be held in or around the Amish area of Ship-shewana, Indiana. Please, if anyone out there would like to host a rally in region 3, let me know. I will be more than happy to help and guide you along the easy path of putting on a rally. So let’s do it !!!!!

Happy Trails and Safe Travels until we meet again.

Marquis Delamination AdviceBeaver Coach Marquis Owners!

My name is Greg Fulton of Greg Fulton Fine Woodworking. I specialize in motorcoach cabinetry, especially Beavers!

In the last few years I've been repairing many Marquis cabinet door veneer delaminations (1997 to 2007 models, so far), and am not sure why this is happening, but I DO have an idea that might help prevent it!

Solid wood like the panels on the Marquis doors, expand and contract with tempera-ture and humidity, while the veneers and lacquer on top of the panels don't. It should help prevent veneer problems if the tem-perature and humidity of the coach are kept relatively consistent, with the humidity be-ing kept as low as possible for your area.

Quick changes of temperature and humidity are especially damaging. I hope this might be helpful to prevent future delaminations.

Region 4 has some great rallies coming up. Our next rally is Home With the Hales, May 31st to June 5, 2013, Eldon, MO

hosted by Paul and Jane Hale. This dry camping rally is followed by It’s Not OZ, It’s Kansas, in To-peka and Hutchinson, KS, June 6 – 11, hosted by June Beaver. June 29th to July 3rd Rich and Kathy Pylar will be the rally masters with Relaxing Colo-rado Style in Glenwood Springs, CO, scheduled to follow rallies in Gillette and Rawlins, WY.

Do you know the connection between Pancho Villa and Deming NM? You can find out if you join rally masters Ken and Sue Neal in Deming, New Mexico, Oct 1 – 6, 2013. They are hosting the Pancho Villa in Deming rally where you are sure to learn more about the Wild West. Join them on your way to Albuquerque.

Aloft in Albuquerque is set for Oct 8 – 13, 2013, with rally masters George and Bev Morlan. This is one of the premier photo opportunities in the world. With a rally site overlooking the launch field of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the fun, and activities are endless. If you aren’t already signed up, then you need to get on the wait list. George and Bev are doing this rally for their 3rd time, so you can expect to have an exceptional time.

The Quartzsite rally will return Jan 15 – 19, 2014 with rally masters Jim and Natasha Nichols. The rally name is Beavers in the Wild West. I am sure that Jim and Natasha will do an outstanding job, and if you have never been to this dry camping rally on BLM land, it is an experience not to be missed. This year will have a new format, so check out their ad in this issue of Beaver Tales.

Just announced: Shopping Canton Style, at Mill Creek Ranch Resort in Canton, Texas, April 3 – 5, 2014 hosted by rally masters, Brent and Julie Lauderdale. This park was a top rated Good Sam Park for 2012. This rally offers many activity op-tions and a great adventure if you are a shopper. Canton Trade Days are promoted as the world’s largest outdoor trade days with thousands of ven-dors from across the country.

Recently, a couple who live near us at Buckhorn Lake Resort, left on a trip in their motorhome, towing their car. They had a blowout on a car tire

and were not aware of the blowout until they were flagged down. By then the tire was worn down to the rim. We can’t see every detail in our rear cameras, so I suggest you invest in a tire monitor system like Pressure Pro or Tire Safe Guard or one of the other available brands. The tire monitor can notify you when either your motorhome or tow is having a tire problem. The newer monitors can even tell you when the heat is rising before you have that blowout. The audible alarm and flashing lights have caused us to pull over and check on a few occasions. We had a leaking valve stem which could have led to a flat tire without a warning from the tire monitor. Also, remember, that when your tires are over 5 years old from the manufactured date, then you’re on borrowed time. You should never go beyond 7 years from the manufactured date. It is not the amount of tread remaining, but the side walls of the tires break down over time.

You can learn about many safety features or get advice from the BAC Forum. You will also learn many things or get ideas from other members when you attend Beaver rallies. Many times Ger-ald Farris or Roy Mueller will hold information-al sessions at rallies. Another way to get help at a rally is just open up a bay or engine door and someone will ask if you need help or just what’s going on. While we are attending the Hales’ rally (mentioned above), I plan to learn how Paul Hale insulated his storage cabinets around the bulk-head of his coach. We often learn from our fellow Beavers, such as, Joanne Fadale holding her “Be Prepared” class and telling us to keep a “GO” bag in the front of your coach. The “GO” bag has extra clothes, medicines, etc. in it, so if something hap-pens and you have to leave your coach in a hurry, then grab your “GO” bag. You will at least have a couple of days of items to get you through a crisis. We had to use our “GO” bag during the Carahs’ Civil War rally because of a tornado threat.

Additionally, we learn from others’ misfortunes, like Wally and Iris Schmidt when they had an engine fire that destroyed their coach. Wally said that the fire consumed their coach so fast that they barely got out. Soon after that, I saw a fire suppression system explained in the fire preven-tion class at the Quartzsite rally. I purchased one for around $500 and Bill McGimpsey helped me install it over my engine. We feel that it was a good investment to insure our safety.

Many more ideas from our BAC members will help you enjoy your motorhome and travel safely to and from our rallies. So sign up soon for a Bea-ver rally listed in the Beaver Tales Rally Roundup.

Once again I can report that our finances are good. Income is nearly $1200 ahead of budget for the first half of our fiscal year, while expenses are a

bit less than $1500 less than budgeted.

On the income side:• Beaver Tales sponsorships are a bit over budget. This is largely the result of a budgeted loss in sponsors has not materialized (but did so after the close of the quar-ter). A factor on the disappointing side is that revenue from the Amazon portal is lower than we budgeted. I don’t know whether this reflects our members not being big custom-ers of Amazon or just not bothering to use the portal. If the latter, please give the portal a try. It doesn’t cost anything and the Club makes a few bucks.• The Overland Insurance arrangement continues to perform well. That said, I am continually surprised that after several years more than half of our members have not even given Overland a crack at their business. It takes only a few minutes to request a quote on Overland’s se-cure website; gets you the level of service you have a right to expect from an insurance broker; and has saved a goodly number of our members some money.• Investment income is a disappointment and is going to stay that way, because the rates on CDs are miserable.

On the expense side:• Beaver Tales costs are about on budget.• The annual Membership Directory costs almost nothing, largely because Tim Bentley does the work on a volunteer basis and costs for supplies are offset by the $4 that members who want a printed directory pay.• Dues operations are a bit over budget because I purchased the postage we need for the August-October campaign early to avoid the postage increase.• Membership expense is about on budget, not sur-prising because this item is dominated by the Membership Director’s contract expense. Iris Schmidt keeps close con-trol on the expenses for postage and supplies.• Regional rally expense is close to budget. No in-ternational rallies were scheduled for the first half of the fiscal year. (We will under-run the budget next quarter because of the cancellation of the Gillette International Rally.)• Taxes are under budget. As I explained in my previous report, I over accrued for the Oregon excise tax when closing the books last year, and the IRS sent us an unexplained check that I assume they will come after when and if they find their mistake.

The balance sheet is strong, and there were no significant changes during the first half of the year, except to with-draw the dues for our Life Members from that reserve. I just got off the phone with Jim Con-tratto. He really seems to be doing well. He is off the infusions and

doing therapy for his hand, back and balance - quite an improvement since we saw them back in mid-March. It’s going to be slow going for him, but with his positive attitude, I believe he will do very well. Let’s keep Jim & Carol in our prayers. Since my last post we have attended 3 rallies. The Dream Car rally, where we had a great time, including a tour of the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Rac-ing in Ocala, Florida. Then, 10 days later we attended the Old Florida Trails rally, in Historic Will-eston, Florida. Among the many activi-ties was a river eco-tour complete with singing. Enjoying the environment and

wildlife on the spring-fed crystal clear Rainbow River and the dark, swamp-fed Withlacoochee River, while learning about the history of the area with music and stories was a great experience. We also had a horse drawn trolley tour of the some of the farms in the area. Our next adventure was the Stone Age to the Space Age rally in Huntsville, Ala-bama. It was particularly fun visiting the Jack Daniels Distillery. Don't forget the Southern Comfort In-ternational Rally in Hilton Head, South Carolina, March 9-14, 2014. We have 40 coaches registered, with room for 15 more. And also, don’t forget to sign up for the Winding Down in the Moun-tains rally, March 21-24 2014 in Dillard, Georgia which follows the Southern Comfort rally. Dianne and I look forward to seeing all of you somewhere on the road or at fu-ture rallies.

A Beaver Remembrance

Some of you long-time Beaver owners know something of the history of the coach and many of you remem-ber Mat Perlot. Mat started in the RV industry as a sales manager for the original Beaver manufactur-er, before leaving to start Safari Motorhomes. When Beaver went bankrupt (the first time), Safari pur-chased it and continued the Beaver line. (For more Beaver history go to the About menu on the Beaver website at www.beaveramb.org or check out the BAC Forum at http://forum.bacrallies.com/m-1273759588/ )

Mat passed away in Scottsdale, Arizona in October and his son, Dave Perlot, wanted the Beaver group to know that he had fond memories of his time with Beaver and the BAC. Also the industry has honored Mat. He has been inducted into the 2013 class of the RV Hall of Fame in Elkhart, Indiana.

In Remembrance - Mat PerlotFrom The Perlot family

Our Dad, Mat Perlot, Founded Safari Motorcoach in 1987. After a productive career in the outdoor garment industry and leading the tumultuous RV industry through the gas lines of the early '80s, he had a vision, and with that came Safari. He soon thereafter founded Magnum, aquired Beaver, founded Composite Technolo-gies, Electronic Design and assembly...his list of accomplishments goes on and on...

What makes us most proud, though, are his contributions, to his family, to his employees, to the industry, and for our consumers and vendors.

He loved the industry and commonly taught us to be gardeners. That was a pet analogy of his… to nurture and develop relationships. The infrastructure grows with factory support - the clubs, the rallies, the service, and support. He said to bring quality and innovation to our products; to educate and care for our relations with dealers, salespeople, and vendors; and most of all to care for owners, employ-ees, dealers, vendors and all involved. He truly has been a master gardener! And he considered all his friends.

Dad sold SMC to Monaco in August 2001 for health reasons, but he managed to have 11 good years of retirement. He would commonly ask us kids about this owner or that vendor or employee, with both care and concern; but also like we were headed back to the office in the morning. Then he'd have a beer and say let’s go fishing!!! There are so many names and relationships that he remembered well, right to the end, that we can't name names without leaving so many out. But please know that he truly cared for all of you and missed the industry dearly.

I know right now he's on a fishing boat in the sky with a glass of a good red...salut-ing Safari International, Beaver Ambassadors, the Trek club...

Thank you all for the care and support, the cards and letters, love and prayers.

What's New on the ForumForum Technical Board questions:

I have a 2005 Monterey (build date 8/2004) with an Allison •3000 transmission. It has 33000 miles on it and I'm just won-dering if, because of age, the Transynd transmission fluid is due for a change? It has been three years since we painted our roof with the •Rustoleum Marine Deck Paint. I said that I would keep tabs on how it has performed and report back on the forum. Verdict...Paint is still in excellent condition with no issues, pressure washing and a scrub once or twice a year and we are good to go. This paint does not chaulk which has been great... I am going to replace my dead leveling compressor soon with •a Viair 380C unit. My 2005 Monterey only has air for level-ing, no hydraulics, I am concerned about what will happen when I disconnect the air line from the compressor. Are there check valves? Will both tanks empty? Will the air bags deflate and drop the chassis? I need to know what to expect so I can take precautions. Advice appreciated. So the city water fill valve began to leak, first when the sys-•tem was pressurized by the water pump, now all the time. I thought this valve would be easily replaced by removing the four screws which secure it. Not so easy. Apparently there are nuts on the back side of these four bolts. I don't see another way to get behind there other than taking that whole front panel off. Am I missing something obvious? Any tips on removing that front panel

Sources for Suppliers Board: Look here to locate hard-to-find parts or services. Here are some of the things listed on this board recently: DIY Norcold 1200 Icemaker replacement, tele-scoping ladder, most reliable tire monitoring system, pressure, heat exchanger fan, fridge racks (kinda rusty), halogen accent 2 1/2 in ceiling lights, third center brake LED brake lamp, tire stem extenders, amber lens cover, replacement wiper motor for 1993, body shop recommendations

Redecorating and Updating your Motorhome Board: Check here for great redecorating ideas.

Started this project a couple of weeks ago, finally got around •to finishing it - pulled apart my cracked Makori ceiling panels and replaced them with cherry plywood. Pretty easy really, the five coats of Varathane it took to match the Marquis finish, are a bit time consuming, but other than that, pretty straight forward.I am getting my new MCD blinds installed on Monday. I have •reviewed all of the postings in the "Redecorating" section, but have seen no new valences. If someone has redone theirs, I would like to see a photo. This is our 1998 Beaver Contessa, before/during/after of the •interior renovation. New flooring, wall paper, wall paneling, blinds/valances, upholstery, and the list goes on…

Mandy CanalesNational Director's Report

Email: [email protected]

NATIONAL SCENE: Governing Board: The next Governing Board meeting will be held this coming June in Gillette, WY. The Governing Board is comprised of every chapter’s national director and presidents of all FMCA areas. If all were present there would be in attendance a little over 550 voting individu-als. At this meeting all FMCA committees will submit a report on their activities for the last year; a budget will be presented; the election of the next national officers will take place; and a few proposed bylaw amendments will be presented. As always, if any of our BAC members have questions about what’s happening within FMCA, I’d be glad to TRY to answer our member concerns.

Financial Report-1st quarter: The Finance Commit-tee sent a recommendation to the Executive Board ask-ing that FMCA investments at B of A be transferred to The Windsor Group. The reasons for the transferring of funds were due to B of A changing account managers and charging higher fees. The committee also stressed to Windsor the importance of limiting FMCA’s exposure to Federal Capital Gains Tax. This past January the transfer was completed.

The overall financial picture continues to improve. The year-to-date (1st quarter) net income is $324,100. A com-bined net income, with magazine loses of $310,336 and investment income is $125,602.

FMCA’s 50th Anniversary: Celebration planning is under-way in Gillette for the anniversary party. $50,000 has been set aside for the activities at the event. A Nostalgia Room will stage memorabilia, postings of pictures, etc., of the happenings over the past 50 years. Should be a good show.

INTERNATIONAL AREA: I don’t usually expound on past happenings but do want to share that the newly elected officers of INTO planned a great rally at the Lazy Days park in Tucson this past March. Congratulations to all of those planners and volunteers who made the event a success.

The next INTO rally is scheduled for Lebanon, TN in 2014. Check your Family Motor Coaching magazine for dates.

BEAVER AMBASSADOR CLUB (BAC) CHAPTER: Not only is FMCA’s 50th being held this year, but our own 30th club anniversary will be held at 7 Feathers Park in Can-

yonville, OR this coming September. As I read the news about the event it will also be a great anniversary party (rally). Be sure to catch all the news about future rallies for your enjoyment. My compliments to all our rally masters for sharing their talents and time for the pleasure we have in enjoying all the places to visit and activities planned.

Future FMCA Family Reunions: March 17 – 20, 2014---Perry, GA August (TBD), 2014---Redmond, OR

‘til next time, hope to see you in Canyonville; Safe travels and keep the shiny side upMandy

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR GILLETTE, WYOMINGOur Ambassador Club is providing volunteers for secu-rity at the FMCA Family Reunion in Gillette, WY this coming June. It's part of the FMCA 50th anniversary rally, held at the Cam-plex facility. There are now 51 Beaver coaches signed up to help with the security there. If you are going to be at that rally and want to volunteer, send me an email or phone me indicating your wish to participate. Also, if you do want to vol-unteer, call FMCA, 800-543-3622 ext, 208, and let them know you are volunteering. If you are not volun-teering and want to park with the Beaver group they will charge you $50.00 for the two days we're there.

Only in America….…do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions wile healthy people can buy cigarettes up front.…do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke.…do banks leave vault doors open and then chain the pens to the counters.…do we leave cars worth thousands of dollar in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage. …do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight.…do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering.

Historical Trivia: Here’s how one of our "ole sayings" came about. In the late 1700’s, many houses consisted of a large room with only one chair. Commonly, a long, wide board folded down from the wall, and was used for dining. The ‘head of the house-hold’ always sat in the chair while everyone else ate sitting on the floor. Occasionally a guest, who was usually a man, would be invited to sit in this chair during a meal. To sit in the chair meant you were important and in charge. They called the one sitting in the chair the ‘chairman’. Today in business, we use the expression or title ‘Chairman’ or ‘Chairman of the Board’

Wax, Seal or Protect By Mary Findley ©2013

Automotive supply stores stock a dizzying array of wax-es, sealants and protectants. Choices range from a polish, glaze, dressing, waterless wash, compound, wet look, wax or gloss enhancer. Let’s delve into this mishmash of prod-ucts to regain a bit of sanity when caring for your coach.

These products fall under three main categories: wax, protectant and sealant. Wax is made from carnauba, which should never be used on fiberglass. Carnauba wax penetrates the clear coat and paint then seals the base whether it’s fiberglass or metal. Fiberglass is porous and must breath to stay healthy otherwise it yellows. Also avoid products that contain petroleum distillates – see below.

Protectants contain polymers that sit on the surface to protect paint from UV ray damage. They also leave the sur-face slick so bugs and dirt slither off the sides and front. Look for a protectant that contains kaolin clay. Clay is a light polishing compound. It removes the small bumps or impurities felt when running your hand across the finish. If not removed, impurities can eventually cause paint issues.

Sealants remove scratches, swirl marks, oxidation and fog on headlights if properly formulated. Test for oxida-tion by pouring a bit of a protectant on a white rag and rub left to right; right to left. Paint is applied left to right. Rubbing in circles leaves unsightly swirl marks.

Any paint showing on the cloth indicates oxidation, which must be removed with a sealant often called a heavy duty cleaner or polishing compound. Use a buffer, I recommend Cyclo, with foam pads. Never use microfi-ber pads as they scratch the paint. Light oxidation can be removed by hand although a buffer produces consistent results. Wait for 24 hours then apply two coats of a petro-leum distillate free protectant.

The roof of a motorhome usually has a single layer of clear coat and oxidizes quickly. Treat roofs two to three times a year to prevent oxidation and caulking.

Word of warning: always know what is in a wax be-fore applying it to a finish. If a company tells you their formula is proprietary information, grab your wallet and head for the door. You have a right to know what you are putting on your vehicle. Generally ‘proprietary formulas’ are made with silicone, which manufacturers do not wish to disclose.

Silicone cannot be completely removed from a finish. Paint will not adhere to silicone. Should your coach need painting and silicone has been applied to the finish, the paint will bubble and peel within a few months.

Search online for the MSDS (material safety data sheet). Look for the warning “if this product reaches a temperature of 150° it turns to silicate dioxide and form-aldehyde.” That warning indicates the presence of sili-cone. Find the MSDS sheet by typing “MSDS sheet for name of product” into a search engine. Or call the com-pany and request a copy. They are required by law to send them when requested.

Someone asked my thoughts recently on these new color specific waxes. Research reported a multitude of problems. Initially the finish appears to have a nice shine. Then it slowly starts to dull the paint. I gave it two thumbs down
