The Bedford Awakening Continues
Few people remember that the “Bedford Awakening” actually had roots going back four years earlier to when members of Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church received a vision from God – literally – that they should host an evangelistic tent revival in their front yard and that this would be a unifying event for the entire Bedford Community. While planning the “Catching Fire” revival they reached out to the Bedford community inviting other Churches to visibly be a part of the event, putting their names on t-shirts and setting up story boards inviting people to visit the various churches in town (sound familiar?). We were one of the churches that participated back then and as I worked with Holy Name, I joked that if Catholics can hold a revival, so can Presbyterians.
Four years later we did just that! Last fall we hosted the second community revival and the response from not only area churches but also the town was again resoundingly positive. One of the images from the Awakening that I will long remember is of ten or more pastors from area churches lined up front ready to pray with those who came forward. Truly this was an event that has helped the Bedford community wake up and begin to catch fire for our faith in Christ Jesus. Reports of the Awakening’s impact continue to come in. Several churches have be-gun or revived their weekly prayer meetings, while ‘prayer for a revival’ has now become a common theme in our area churches. Even Bedford town government folks expressed hopes that someone would host a similar event next fall! Through the Ministerial Association, we are working on doing just that.
The next step in the awakening is coming before then. Word of Life Evangelical Church has invited our Awaken-ing Speaker, Rev. Rick Astle, to return this March 20-22, to lead a second seminar on prayer. The event is being called The Bedford Awakening Prayer Seminar and again is open to the entire community free of charge. Along with Rick Astle, legendary Christian singer, Carman will be putting on a free concert. What a wonderful way to keep the Awakening fires burning! After this the Bedford Ministerial Association will begin planning another outdoor revival at the Farmer’s Market.
What should we Presbyterians be doing in preparation for these events? We should begin fervently PRAYING that God will bless and prosper both Rick Astle’s return and the 2nd Bedford Awakening revival coming this fall. Please join me in praying that the sparks ignited four years ago will eventually catch fire in a genuine community wide revival. I certainly am – John

February 2020--CLERK’S CORNER
A big welcome to elder-elect Scarlett Stevens. She will be heading the Fellowship Committee. Venus Gould presented her concerns about the Choir Room, which needs a thorough cleaning.
Session approved funding the clean-up. New Members Class will have its final meeting on Feb. 27. Mark your calendars: BPC will be hosting the Lenten Luncheon on March 18. David Grigg will
head food preparation; John will deliver the sermon; Bill will lead the music. Tell your friends: the Stories of the Bible sermon series continues. During March, notices will be
put in the paper and the Stories of the Bible banner will be hung. First Fruits disbursements for 2019 have been completed. Lee Murphree, with Heart of Christ, will be preaching on February 16. Afterwards, join everyone
for a brunch in his honor. Notice anyone with dark circles under their eyes? The youth lock-in retreat went well. Although
sleep deprived, the attendees were enthused. The church Garage Sale has been moved to Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2. See Ryan John-
son or Roy Cram for more information or to contribute! Something More will resume on March 3rd. Looking forward to this! A hymn sing will be held on April 26 with Bill’s Hawaiian selections as
special music. Bedford info cards have been revamped by Bill Mitchell and sent to the printer. Session approved a bid by Magic City Sprinkler to perform sprinkler repairs. After the non-profit status documentation from Presbytery was received, the IRS was contacted
and will be sending a verification letter. The church will then be able to apply for membership in GuideStar and then sign up for AmazonSmile. Stay tuned.
Good news! John Salley apprised the town that the church had not been billed for Farmers’ Market rental fees for the Awakening. As it turns out, the town felt that the event served the community and decided to waive the fees. In fact, they hope we’ll do it again this year!
The Churchmen will be
joining us again!!
On August 1st, the
Churchmen will be here for
another concert.
Be sure to tell your friends and
neighbors so that they may
come and enjoy the music and
stories.

PRAYER WALK PRAYER WALK
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings should be
made for everyone, for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and
peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. 1 Timothy 2: 1-2
if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from
their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14
Let us join together once again on March 16th, for focused prayer
at key locations in town. We will pray in front of Bedford County Social
Services, Bedford County Court House, Town of Bedford Police Station,
Bedford Country Administration Building and more.
All are welcome, so save the date and invite your friends, family, pastor
church and more!!

All the Stories of the Bible and Something More
We are continuing our exploration of some of the earliest stories recorded in the Bible and what they teach us (it’s more than what you learned in Sunday School).
Having looked at the creation stories, it is now time to consider humanity’s fall into sin and the repercussions that have continued to spread from that event. On Tuesday’s from 4:30-6:30, our “Something More” Bible study will dig even deeper into the background behind these stories.
Following is the schedule of topics that we will be covering in the month of March:
March 8, 2020 Genesis 11: 1-9
The Tower of Babel
March 15, 2020 Genesis 12: 1-9
Abraham goes on a walkabout
March 22, 2020 Genesis 12: 4-26
Abraham, Pharaoh and lies
March 29, 2020 Genesis 14: 1-24
Abraham and Melchizedek
New Mid-Week Prayer Group
Are you “Standing In The Need of Prayer?” Do you need a “Sweet Hour Of Prayer?” We invite you to be part of an intimate group of Christians who love Jesus and who want to grow a deeper relationship with Him.
The Deacons would like to start a middle of the week prayer group that will meet at the Fosters home (129 Foxwood Drive, Goode, VA). If you feel led to join
us, please let Ellen Foster know what day and time would be convenient for you.
We may even sing a song or two!
