BV AWARDS DAY 2020 - “BRAVING THE UNKNOWN”
The theme of the BV Awards Day this year is “Braving the Unknown”.
Held over in four different sessions, we not only affirmed students who
have done well academically, but also gave recognition to students who
have performed well in non-academic domains.
In addition, this was also a special day in which we applauded our
staff’s effort in moulding the lives of our students. We sincerely
congratulate the staff who received the MOE Long Service Award and
their letters of promotion on this day.

RACIAL HARMONY DAY
Racial Harmony Day 2020 – “Multicultural Singapore”
‘As Singapore progresses and we continue to shape our multicultural
identity, it is important that we strengthen the collective identity of
Singaporeans. Through encouraging our youth to cultivate strong
relationships with diverse individuals and groups, we inspire them to
take ownership of their roles in building a cohesive Singapore.’
This year, Bedok View commemorated Racial Harmony Day differently.
The teachers and students delved deeper into the topic of racial
harmony through more classroom-based conversations. Through our
daily interactions, we have realised how some of us may take our racial
harmony for granted in our multicultural Singapore, a place we call
“home”. The Form Teachers and Key Personnel assigned to the
respective classes facilitated the Racial Harmony Day Contemporary
Issues Lesson Packages to incorporate vibrant discussions between
the teachers and their students. The lessons highlighted the importance
of not trivialising racism and learning to listen and empathise with one
another.
We are reminded of the importance of respecting one another in the
things we say to each other, the way we look out for one another,
especially in the current pandemic. During the Racial Harmony week,
we celebrated our diversity and richness and with our shared
experiences and heritage, we are again reminded that we are
Singaporeans and Singapore is indeed our Home.

Another exciting aspect of the commemoration was the active
participation of our students in the BV Conversations on Harmony – a
BV Stories Competition.
Below are a few selected entries of the students’ perspectives and their
experiences in racial harmony.

A SPECIAL NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATION – TOGETHER, A STRONGER SINGAPORE – 2020
On 7
th August 2020, Bedok Viewans, decked in a specially designed
National Day T-shirt by our Red Dot Ambassador, enthusiastically flocked in to school, eagerly anticipating the unique celebrations and multitude of activities awaiting them at the 2020 National Day Celebrations - Together, A Stronger Singapore. This year’s NDP 2020 was like no other as we celebrated in smaller groups. Even though the students were physically apart, everyone remained united in spirit.
As the Uniformed Group leaders scrambled into action as early as seven in the morning, the parade square was set for students to display their resolve in preparation for a unique National Day Observance Ceremony. The school formed up in a solemn yet symbolic manner as we carried out the flag raising ceremony to commemorate the nation’s 55th birthday. The Combined Uniformed Group contingent marched in proudly to start off the event which was telecast live to all
the classrooms while the National Anthem and pledge were recited. The classrooms were also decorated in a very vibrant manner by the students. Congratulations to Sec 1/6, 2/5, 3/4 and 4/3 for having the best decorated National Day-themed classrooms. During the National Day lesson, Bedok Viewans come together (whilst #safedistancing) in class as we embraced our differences and examined the values, hopes and dreams that bind us as one and celebrated in the right spirit. We have certainly come a long way, weathered storms and survived crises together. We will continue to do so, as one Singapore. The celebrations reached its pinnacle when the whole school viewed the school’s National Day Virtual Choir Video, which included input from staff, students and even some parents, singing to the beautiful rendition of We Are Singapore. All students and staff were given a beautiful BV Brolly, an umbrella- one of the world’s most useful and practical inventions. P.S. Did you catch some of our Bedok Viewans and staff members with their families on national television?

TEACHERS’ DAY CELEBRATION - “MEMORIES”
This year, Teachers’ Day celebration was held on 3rd
September. This
was an event put together by our student councillors and class leaders
who put in great effort in their meticulous planning from the beginning of
Term 3. The celebrations started with the Form Teacher Time where
students showed appreciation of their teachers and presented them
with personalized bags filled with notes of affirmation.
The Teachers’ Day Concert was broadcast via Zoom. Our students put
together an appreciation video to affirm the efforts of our teachers and a
performance segment comprising six different performance items put up
by both teachers and students. As part of our effort to build a positive
teacher-student relationship, the Student Leaders also hosted a Kahoot
game “How Well Do You Know Your Teacher?”. In this game, the
students had to guess trivia facts related to their Form Teachers. This
fun session gave our students the opportunity to get to know their
teachers in a more personal way. The day ended with the presenting of
BV Teachers’ Day Awards to affirm and appreciate our teachers.

STAFF WELL-BEING: TEACHERS’ DAY AND STAFF APPRECIATION WEEK
This year, the Teachers’ Day & Staff Appreciation Week celebrations spanned over four days from 31
st August to 3
rd September. The theme
for this year was ‘Memories’. Our Staff Well-Being Committee (SWB) showed appreciation to all staff with elements of surprise throughout the week. Through the week’s series of celebrations, SWB aimed to create great memories as “One BV Family”. All the staff got to enjoy sumptuous bento treats from the School Advisory Committee (SAC) and our School Leaders on 31
st August and
2nd
September. On 1st September, our Parent Support Group (PSG)
presented all staff with a colourful and beautiful snack, the Rainbow Steamed Cake in a jar, to sweeten up their day. Instead of the usual Staff Lunch on Teachers’ Day, the SWB painstakingly organised a virtual Zoom party to celebrate this special day. The virtual party was filled with so much fun, joy and laughter. The activities included staff acknowledgement, bonding games, viewing of an appreciation video and reciting of the Teachers’ Pledge. There was also a lucky draw and the top five lucky draw prizes were generously sponsored by our SAC. On 3
rd September, the staff were greeted by a morning surprise. Our
SWB committee decorated the Staff Room and General Office with colourful foil balloons. Each staff also received a personalised mask holder, an appreciation card, some paper cranes, a bottled drink and a breakfast snack. The staff definitely enjoyed a memorable Teachers’ Day celebrations this year!

SECONDARY FOUR CAREER GUIDANCE WORKSHOP
Bedok View Secondary School strives to provide experiential learning
opportunities to develop good character, values and social-emotional
learning competencies. In the last week of Term 1, the graduating
students attended the Kickstarter Programme which aims to provide
them with the skills necessary to succeed in school and in life. The 2-
day workshop focused on the building of students’ personal branding,
interview skills, envisioning, as well as effective revision strategies.
Besides group-based interactive activities, the Fascinate App was also
used to engage the students in their learning. To prepare them for the
world of work, the students went through an interview skills activity.
They also learnt about the admission requirements of the local tertiary
institutions which will help them to make a more informed decision
about their post-secondary education and future career pathways.
