INTRODUCTION The document must describe the background of the subject, the authors work, the methods used and its results. Papers are to be prepared in English without astrict limitation to the number of pages, but it is suggested that the paper length should not exceed 6000 words and a reasonable average is between 10 and 12. Used or produced data may be attached (the collection of references too) to it. Technical terms should be explained. Acronyms should be written out at their first appearance. MAIN RULES PhD Candidates are requested to format their Milestones Meeting Document using the following rules: PAGE SIZE check that the printing format have been set as A4 (297 × 210 mm). Every page has the same margins: lower, left and right margins are set at 2,0 cm, upper margin 3,5; the area for texts, pictures and graphs is 19,0 cm wide and 24,2 cm height.

ABSTRACTThis sample paper gives recommendations for writing and formatting ABC-PhD Milestones Meet-ing Documents (MMD). Please read it.Every MMD should begin with an abstract of about 100-200 words, followed by a set of keywords: a concise statement of the argument, the problem (if already identified), the approach (if set) and the conclusions (you should always have some conclusions): shortly and clearly.State here also if any publication of this content has been or is going to be published and reference these publications [12], [3].

INTRODUCTIONThe document must describe the background of the subject, the authors work, the methods used and its results. Papers are to be prepared in English without astrict limitation to the number of pages, but it is suggested that the paper length should not exceed 6000 words and a reasonable average is between 10 and 12. Used or produced data may be attached (the collection of references too) to it.Technical terms should be explained. Acronyms should be written out at their first appearance.

MAIN RULESPhD Candidates are requested to format their Milestones Meeting Document using the following rules:

PAGE SIZE check that the printing format have been set as A4 (297 × 210 mm). Every page has the same margins: lower, left and right margins are set at 2,0 cm, upper margin 3,5; the area for texts, pictures and graphs is 19,0 cm wide and 24,2 cm height.

FONTS and PARAGRAPH: The basic text font is 12 point Times family font (use Style Normale), fixed line height: 14 pt. The Title of the paper is Titolo 1 style: 17 points coloured Calibri font, in bold. The following titles are not numbered and may be nested in two levels: a first level (Titolo 2 style) 13 point calibri, in bold capital letters and (if needed) and a second level (Titolo 3 style) 12 calibri, bold low case letters.

TITLE: paper’s title and author’s name must run across the full width of the page. Use the actual style “HEADING 1”

TEXT: 12-point Times Roman font, one column, justified It is expected that spelling and grammatical errors, as well as language usage problems, are

corrected. HEADER and FOOTER: please state here if the document is CONFIDENTIAL adding in

CAPITAL, bold letters. No footer at the bottom of every pages (page numbers will be added

in the collection of the Milestone Meeting Documents in the chair pagination process) and no header in the first page.

REFERENCES and CITATIONS: Use a numbered list of references at the end of the article, ordered alphabetically by first author, and referenced by numbers in brackets [2, 4, 5, 7] in the text.

TABLES: The text of the table headings should be sufficient to explain the figure or table without needing to refer to the text. The text of tables in each field will look better if it has equal amounts of spacing above and below it. Use the same amount of decimal numbers and, reasonably, use INCOLONNATI A DESTRA

IMAGES: Use Figura Style (centered). Figures and tables not cited in the text should not be presented; avoid larger-than-necessary files, use an image editing tool to resize images at the appropriate printing resolution (usually 300 dpi), and then insert the image into Word using Insert Picture From File. The best position of a big picture or table is either at the top or at the bottom of the page.

GRAPHS: may be in full color. Please use only SOLID FILL colors which contrast well both on screen and on a black-and-white hardcopy.

Figure 1. Captions should be Times New Roman 10-point (use Didascalia Style in this template file), automatically numbered (e.g., “Table 1” or “Figure 2”), centered and placed beneath the figure or table.

LANGUAGE, STYLE AND CONTENT: The language is English. Hyphenation is strongly suggested and, to ensure a good readability for an international audience, write in a straight-forward style, avoiding long or complex sentences. If you use technical terms and acronyms, possibly unfamiliar to readers, please explain them, for the less cultivated. Local references, also, must be explained, as nobody knows all city names in a country. Use gender-neutral, inclusive language and, if possible, use the exact alphabetic character set for names in per-sons, institutions, and places (e.g., Grønbæk, Lafreniére, Sánchez, Universität, Weißenbach, Züllighoven, Århus, etc.).

METHODS FINDINGS AND ARGUMENTThe methodology must be clearly stated and described in sufficient detail or with sufficient refer-ences. The findings and arguments of the work should be explicitly described and illustrated. Sup-porting figures, tables and images of the results (no more than two figures and two tables) may be included in the extended abstract. All the tables, images and figures should be centered. Figures and images should be numbered (see Figure 2 for an example) and figure headers should be placed un-der the figure or image; as for the tables, they should also be numbered (see Table 2 for an example) and the table header should be placed at the top. References (if any) of the tables, figures and im-ages should be presented right under the tables, figures and images in the form of author surname and publication date.

OTHER TOPICS

FootnotesFootnotes must be numbered consecutively, and automatically referenced1. Style should conform to Testo nota a piè di pagina style.

QuotationsQuotations from foreign language sources should be translated into English in the text, at least in a footnote; alternatively, the original text, if necessary, many appear in footnotes. Internet sources must be cited as the following example: www.mitpressjournals.org (accessed July 1, 2011) indicat-ing the last access date.

UnitsSI units are encouraged. Do not mix complete spellings and abbreviations of units: “Wb/m2” or “webers per square meter”, not “webers/m2”. Spell out units when they appear in text. Use a zero before decimal points: “0.25”, not “.25”.

Mathematical formulasFormulas be placed in the middle of text lines (inline math) or in separate paragraphs. Inline for-mula may be used only for short equations. Long and important mathematical formulas should be placed in separate paragraphs, centred, and with a left-justified number, like the following:

(1) .

Use the Equation style, in this case, that will add a progressive number, in a paragraph separated from the text by a small amount of space below and above. The style contains two tabulators: a left-justifying tabulator at the left margin and a centring tabulator in the middle of the line. To let the formula goes in the middle press Ctrl+Tab. When referring to these equations, enclose the num-bers in parentheses and precede them with “Eq.” or “Eqs.” Put an unbreakable space between “Eq.” and the number (press Ctrl-Shift-Space to insert the unbreakable space).

Credits and CopyrightAuthors must specify if they are using copyrighted images and data and if they hold the rights to use them or not.

1 An excessive use of (number and lenght) footnotes must be avoided.

COMMON MISTAKESDon’t start any paragraph with a list. Introduce the list with few words:

The word “data” is plural, not singular. In American English, commas, semi-/colons, periods, question and exclamation marks are

located within quotation marks only when a complete thought or name is cited, such as a title or full quotation. When quotation marks are used, instead of a bold or italic typeface, to highlight a word or phrase, punctuation should appear outside of the quotation marks. A par-enthetical phrase or statement at the end of a sentence is punctuated outside of the closing parenthesis (like this). (A parenthetical sentence is punctuated within the parentheses.)

The abbreviation “i.e.” means “that is”, and the abbreviation “e.g.” means “for example”. The list is to be kept open

CONCLUSIONIt is particularly important that you state clearly what you have done, not merely what you plan to do, and that you explain how your work is different from other works and what is the unique contri-bution that your work makes to the field. Underline the difference from your previous Milestones too.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTSA simple paragraph, where you may acknowledge people, association, entities and external review-ers that helped you in your work. In a standard publication, you will probably thank your tutor, su-pervisors and, if any, the granter of your work. Not here..

REFERENCESThis is not the full bibliography of the candidate, that may be added as attachment to the paper: just the list of the main, fundamental references used in the document. A short introduction, like this, may be useful. Quoted papers from conference proceedings will show the title of the paper and an abbreviated name of the conference but, please, do not include location and date, just page numbers if available. Avoid quotation of non accessible material, except in the case that they are funda-mental for your work.
