According to the archaeological data from more than three thousand years ago in Egypt, India and China, there was a great deal of attention paid to the study of the iris and its correspondences to the organs of the body. The Egyptians were also greatly influenced by Astrological information and may have seen the eye as a microcosm of the Zodiac. In ancient astrological practise the human body had already been divided up into the 12 signs of the Zodiac i.e.: Aries was the head, Taurus was the neck etc.

The Egyptians had a great interest in iris structure and this can be seen in the workmanship of their statues.

Here are a selection of statue eyes from the Cairo Museum showing inlayed ceramic eyes with very specific colouration patterns, indeed It is impossible to find two similar eyes in amongst these magnificent examples.

Although ancient Asian healers were using the eye as a form of diagnosis it is rarely mentioned that the iris was used exclusively as the only means of illness detection.

The oldest written record of detailed eye analysis comes from the Caraka Samhita. Caraka was a famous Indian author and his samhita (treatise) is one of the foundation stones of Ayurveda (traditional Indian medicine) still used to this day.

‘If any distortion in colour or shape, be it subtle or definite is seen reflected in the shadow of the iris (eye) a skilled physician should treat that patient with care, for these signs can portent of coming illness or moribund conditions’.

Caraka Samhita: Chapter VII (1500BC)

In Ayurvedic teaching the eye or specifically the white of the eye (sclera) is seem to relate to Majja (the current state of the nervous system). As this important tissue in the body feeds and regulates the immune system the whiteness of the eye was used to determine the current state of health.

In Greek mythology, Iris is the personification of the rainbow and messenger of the gods. Iris links the realm of the Gods to humanity. She can travel with the speed of wind from one end of the world to the other and into the depths of the sea and the underworld. Like her male counterpart Hermes (Planet Mercury / planet of healing) she wields a caduceus, the symbol of healing and transformation.

Dr. Ignaz von Peczely (1826 -1911)

Considered by most to be the modern-day father of Iridology.

Von Peczely seized upon the idea that the state of the bodies internal mechanism could be observed and charted from analysis of the Iris.

As a physician and Homeopath in later life he had many opportunities to study this phenomena in his patients and kept many journals over his years of practise, accumulating much knowledge about this new emerging science.

Von Peczely also examined many cadavers during post mortem but was often puzzled over apparent iris signs than never seemed to have troubled the patient during his lifetime where as other iris signs had manifested as illness / disease.

He termed this observation ‘Hic signum ubi ulcus’ (here is the sign but where is the disease)?

Von Peczely finally concluded that Iris signs were inherent weaknesses that may or may not manifest depending upon the person’s life experiences.

2 Primary Types of People

There are two primary types of people in the world. Primary means the foundation of the personality is either emotional or thinking. With thousands of modifiers there are practically infinite permutations of these two qualities. The eyes are a powerful tool to understand a person’s core nature. Psora and Lacunae are the structural components influencing the Feeling and Thinking Types.
