Term 4 Week 7 November 27 2018

Principal’s Message

Greetings everyone,

Last Thursday Callan P from 4B was formally recognised at the University of NSW ICAS medal competition. Callan was judged the best writer in Year 4 in NSW based on the ICAS writing competition. Thousands of students across the state from all school sectors sit the test. This is an outstanding result – congratulations Callan.

Callan and his proud parents As we approach the end of the year the school seeks feedback from our community. This is the first year of our current three year plan and in next week’s newsletter there will be a brief survey aimed at gleaning community perceptions of how we are travelling.

Last week’s P&C meeting was very positive as the membership considered the feedback provided through the community survey. The outcomes following discussions inspired by survey responses are outlined later in this newsletter. The P&C voted to purchase a replacement sail for the shade area over the blue seats in the primary quad to the tune of $3500. The P&C is also considering the possibility of a new shade area in the Infants Quad outside the 1/2M classroom.

P&C Meeting

P&C Response to Community Feedback The Belair P&C would like to thank our community for feedback and suggestions provided in the recent survey. There was some frank feedback and some great ideas. Meeting times were identified as an impediment to participation by some. In response, the P&C plans to alternate meeting nights in 2019 between Tuesday and Wednesday evenings on the third week of each month. In addition, to accommodate people who may be interested in contributing to P&C activities without necessarily being a part of the overall management group, an associate group will meet on a morning prior to the monthly P&C meeting. The role of this group will evolve based on membership and interests. Communication was a strong theme through the feedback. The P&C plans to establish a Facebook page which will be a means of communication with our community and will include a monthly summary of the business that transpired at the monthly meeting. The P&C will also communicate various roles and jobs needing to be done with a hope that a greater number of community members will step up to take on these roles. There was a strong sentiment in some responses that the P&C should focus more on community building activities as well as the ongoing fundraising. The P&C really liked this suggestion and the first activity planned for 2019 is a welcome BBQ breakfast on the Friday of Week 3 Term 1. GATS Policy Sharing Last term an interested group of parents reviewed and responded to our draft revised policy for meeting the needs of Gifted and Talented students. The policy has been finalised and strategies embedded. Parents are invited to meet today at 3.05pm, Tuesday 27 November, in the library to view the final policy and also discuss proposed strategies planned for implementation in 2019. Band News It is time for Ms Loredo and Mr Lamond to hold the 2019 Band Try Outs.

When: Wednesday 6th December between recess and lunch. Location: Connected Classroom Who: 2018 Years 2 to 5 students (interested students must have returned the

signed note from parents by Tuesday 5th December).

Notes and Joining the Band brochures will be going home with students this week. Afternoon Pick up Time We would like to remind parents that the end of day school bell rings at 2.55pm. If you are unable to collect your child at that time, would you please organise suitable alternatives for your child’s after school care.

Year 6 Mini Fete The annual Year 6 Fete is on Wednesday 6 December. The aim of the Mini Fete is for Year 6 students to raise money for a present to the school. It also engages the students in real world problem solving, critical and creative thinking. Students in Kindergarten to Year 5 are invited to participate in the Mini Fete by purchasing items from stalls including ice-cream, cupcakes, colour hair spray, Trash and Treasure and side show alley games. Prices range from 10c to $2 and students are asked to bring their money (coins preferred) on the day to enjoy the fun. Donations Required: Students running the Trash and Treasure stall at the Mini Fete require donations of books, toys and bric a brac. Please send donations to 6P classroom. Outstanding Invoice Reminder Just a friendly reminder that we still have outstanding money that needs to be paid. Some examples of money still owing:

Book Packs, excursions, Year 6 T-shirts, Canberra Excursion, Great Aussie Bush Camp

We would really appreciate payment for these activities finalised this week. Thank you for your support and co-operation with this matter.

Deputy Principal’s Message 5K has continued to set a very high standard of behaviour at daily lines, and was once again rewarded with sitting on the seats at the 3–6 assembly. A big congratulations to 5K! Tomorrow will be the final orientation visit for our 2019 kindergarten students. Our Year 5 students are looking forward to spending the morning with their buddies. Our Year 6 students who are attending Kotara High will be participating in their own orientation. This has given us the opportunity tomorrow to give students in Kindergarten to Year 4 a little taster of what is to come in 2019. During the morning session, each class will visit a teacher who is currently teaching the grade they will be in next year. For example, our Year 2 students will spend the morning with our current Year 3 teachers. Year 2 will also get to have their recess with the ‘big kids; under the Primary COLA. This will give students a chance to find out about what might change for them next year in their new grade. Belair Language of Resilience The focus for this week is the element of Contribution.

Anti-Bullying: Be an Upstander! Throughout this term, I have spoken about many different ways that we can be upstanders. Some of these have included:

• Being a friend • Being a message stopper • Calling out a person on their bullying behaviour

Please take the opportunity this week to chat with your children about times they have been an upstander and the actions or response they chose. Have a wonderful week!

Kind regards

Sarah Jardine

Last Wednesday, Belair Public School students participated in the Rookies Chess Competition Finals at PCYC Broadmeadow.

The following students attended:

Bronson B, Bailey T, Chris E and Muaaz A

These students did a fantastic job representing our school and are to be congratulated for making the finals.

This is an excellent achievement!

We are still waiting on the finalised results of the day.

A huge thank you to Mr Butler for transporting members of the team to the venue.

Belair Waste Warriors A huge thank you to the Waste Warriors from Year 4! Their dedication and persistence in monitoring the recycling buckets every day at recess and lunch has resulted in correct recycling and information for all students. We are still seeing a big reduction in the amount of waste coming to school, in particular with less soft plastic packets. Keep finding ways to pack your lunch waste free by using containers, reusable wraps and bags. Keep up the great work families! Plastic Police During the Christmas holidays please take your soft plastics to any Coles or Woolworths for recycling though the Recycle program. This will ensure that there is not a huge backlog of soft plastics coming into the beginning of 2019.

PLEASE NOTE: from 2019, Book Club orders will ONLY BE AVAILABLE USING LOOP

What is LOOP?

LOOP is Scholastic Book Club’s “Linked Online Ordering & Payment” platform. This system allows parents to place and pay for their order without the need to return the paper form to school. You

can still choose to complete and form (and return it to school), and pay using credit card or cash for the rest of this year. However, the more people that utilise LOOP the more efficient it is for

everyone! With LOOP you can pay using credit card and you can use any Scholastic vouchers. LOOP

includes a gift option so you can still request that your order is left at the office to be collected. You can access LOOP either at www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP or via the app (download from the

App Store or Google play). If you have any problems using LOOP, Scholastic are more than happy to help out parents directly

– call them on 1800 021 233.
