Dear Parents and Caregivers

Welcome to our Term 3 edition of the Kinross College newsletter. As always it has been another busy term with students:

• Showcasing their skills in the visual and performing arts.

• Competing in a variety of sporting events - capped off by our annual faction carnival.

• Attending camps at Woodman Point and in the south of the state and

• displaying their academic prowess through the Academic Extension showcase.

Early in the term students from Yrs 6-10 presented to the community their dramatic interpretation of “Man of Steel”. It was an hilarious evening and displayed the acting talents of our students. Well done to the cast who participated so admirably and in particular to Mrs Bell, Miss Allingham and Mr Ferrari for their expertise in coordinating the performances.

Week 4 saw our Yr 7 students, under the guidance of their respective teachers, head off for four days of fun, folly and fantastic education at the Woodman Point camp site. All students had an extremely positive camp experience.

Week 7 saw the culmination of our Term 3 sports program with the staging of our annual athletics carnival. In perfect weather the students ran, jumped, hurdled and threw their way around a plethora of individual and group activities. It turned out to be a fantastic day and was very well supported by parents. A big thank you must go to Miss Nottle and her physical education staff for yet again organising and staging another wonderful event for the students.

Week 8 saw our Academic Extension students present the cross-curricula projects they have been working on all term. We were privy to a variety of

“gizzmos and gadgets”. It really is amazing how

young, intellectual minds work when

given the freedom to create..! Again, congratulations to the students in their foresight and creativity but also thank you to our Academic Extension team lead by Mrs

Gardiner who coordinated a wonderful evening that was superbly attended by the school community.

The last two weeks of this term involved:

• Academic Extension testing for students in Years 7-9 in readiness for the 2014 school year.

• Our primary interschool athletes squad competed in their interschool carnival.

• Yrs 6 and 7 students undertook Department of Education swimming lessons.

• Yr 10 Food Production students delivering their parent dinner.

• The annual staff v students footy match for the Stewart Trophy,

• and finally our end of term assembly.

Phew, that’s Term 3 with only the major events accounted for!!

Friday 27 September is the final day for Term 3 and may I take the opportunity to wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday. Term 4 will commence for all students on Wednesday 16 October (staff have the 14/15 October as professional learning days).

Miss Chinen, Mrs Le and myself will be escorting a group of Year 10 students to Paris for two weeks commencing October 14, which will be a real highlight for all concerned.

Thank you to everyone for your support this term and enjoy your break.

On the frosty morning of Tuesday 13 August, the Year 7s left for camp. It took an hour and 15 minutes to get to Woodman Point and by the time we got there we were even more excited to get out and explore. Once we were all off the buses with our huge loads, we set off to our dorms to get settled. Next, we all got back together at the dining hall for a delicious afternoon tea of scones with

jam and cream. This was only one of the many enticing meals we had at camp. Each day we participated in several activities, from gliding through the air on the flying fox, to using all our body strength to pull ourselves up to the top of the rock wall.

The activities we participated in helped many students conquer their fears, especially that of heights. Fear first struck some students when they took their first steps up the towering and twisting stairwell to reach the platform of the flying fox.

Apart from the many enjoyable day activities, each night we came together

as a whole Year 7 group to participate in evening activities. This ranged from mini Olympics to a ‘Camps Got Talent’. This was a valuable opportunity for students to showcase their talents and abilities. Well done to all those who conquered their fear of stage fright and gave it a go!

A massive thank you goes out to all the magnificent parent helpers and extraordinary Year 7 teachers for organising this spectacular camp that will be talked about for many weeks to come.

West Coast Players visit the College!Early in Term 3, West Coast Eagles (WCE) players

- Eric McKenzie and Patrick McGinnity visited Kinross College to present the Yr 6/7 footy

team with the Eagles Cup trophy they won. The footy team won first place in the Oceanside

Interschool Association competition.

The WCE players gave the students an inspirational talk on their footy careers and a

day-by-day account of their weekly routines. The students participated in a question and answer session and were able to take photos with the

players using their iPads.

Secrets that lead to Student successSecret 5. Cultivate a respect for elders and for persons in positions of authority

• Limit the amount of time your children spend watching TV shows. Make them understand that pop culture icons are not the norm!

• Never tolerate disrespect for elders or authority figures from your child, whether it’s reflected in his/her tone, language or behaviour.

• It’s okay to encourage your child to be the teacher’s pet. Handing in quality work on time, being attentive and courteous in the classroom and encouraging the same from peers will win the hearts of your child’s educators. Rest assured, your child (and indirectly you), will reap the rewards for years to come.

Watch this space for further Secrets of Success.

Moving forward into an environmentally friendly futureThe Year 10s have been studying renewable energy within the Global Systems unit. Students engaged in an activity where they were asked to produce their own renewable energy in class and were given the opportunity to make Biodiesel from waste vegetable oil.

The experiments involved in making Biodiesel are quite complex. The chemicals required had to be handled safely

Science

and the steps followed, precisely. In the past, the experiment has been conducted with senior science students, but this is the first time that I have run this experiment where the entire class successfully produced useable fuel. That is testimony of how well the students listened and followed instructions.

After the experiments, the students poured the fuel in my car. When the car was started for a test run, the students did comment that the exhaust fumes smelt like hungry jacks! No problems with the car so far!

Exhibition of LearningThis term has been a very busy one for the academic extension students. Week 8 saw the Academic Extension Exhibition of Learning. On a Tuesday evening our students proudly put their work on display for parents and friends. The Year 8 students had their fairytale movies set up on computers, bound copies of their creative writing to read, detailed Venn diagrams and maps, and amazing bridges, complete with plans, which were strength tested on the night.

The Year 9 and 10 students displayed both individual and group project work

Academic Extension Yrs 8-10

along with their science and maths workbooks. Many of the Year 9 students had produced detailed models of villages or sporting arenas. Others developed board games, wrote letters and diary entries, and displayed posters of their work on the Golden Ratio. The Year 10 students displayed creative timelines, posters, art works and movies, as well as the solar cars they researched, designed and constructed.

It was fantastic to see so many parents attend on the night. The students were very proud of their achievements

and were thrilled with the overwhelmingly positive response to their work. Thank you so much to everyone who attended, everyone who contributed behind the scenes, all the teachers of Academic Extension and the students themselves for such a successful exhibition.

Scitech IncursionScitech brought their travelling Technology Roadshow to Kinross College early in Term 3. The Year 9 and 10 academic extension students participated in the interactive technology show where they were encouraged to think creatively about new and future technology and consider alternative uses for the technology that they engage daily.

After lunch, the Year 10 students took part in a robotics workshop where they were challenged to solve a problem by programming sensor-equipped Lego NXT robots using Mindstorm software. The workshop introduced the students to programming concepts and highlighted the ever-increasing use of robotics in the modern world.

Perth Fashion Festival

Excursion.

What a fabulous day our Year 10 Textiles

students had at Perth Fashion Festival.

Dressed in their finest, our young ladies

rummaged through vintage stores, collected

pins and badges at the Northbridge

Makeshift Festival and watched designer

parades in Fashion Central at Forrest Chase.

After a leisurely lunch, some students had

their makeup done at the Enex100 lips and

lashes bar while the rest window shopped

on King Street, stopping only for icecream.

The students had earned the invitation to

the excursion through hard work, excellent

attendence and consistent good manners

and as expected, they represented Kinross

College and their families in a wonderful way.

Special thanks must go to Heather Butler,

Kim Flatt and Justine Boyd for coming along

to supervise.

School Sport WA Junior Boys’ Soccer Competition 2013

Throughout the past two terms, a team of Year 8/9 boys from Kinross College competed in the Junior Boys’ Soccer competition held by School Sport WA. The competition format consisted of a round robin group stage followed by a knock out finals stage for those teams which finished top two in their group. Unfortunately due to a couple of forfeits from other teams Kinross only played Wanneroo SC and Quinns Baptist College in their round games, winning both games comfortably and qualifying for the knock out stage top of our group. In the first round the team played exceptionally well defeating Churchlands SHS 6-0 and progressing through to the next stage. Our next match brought about a much closer game with Kinross scoring a last minute goal to win against a determined Prendiville CC team which had many late opportunities to seal the game. This win qualified the team for the quarterfinals of the competition against Woodvale Secondary College. Knowing this was going to be a tough game against quality opposition, the team tried hard all game never giving up. Unfortunately Woodvale were far too superior on the day winning 11-0. The boys should be proud of their efforts as this is as far into the competition any Kinross College team has made it in recent times. A big thank you to all students, student helpers and parents for committing their time after school to either play, umpire or transport students to venues and for your support of the team throughout the competition.

Glory Boys’ Cup 2013

On Friday 2 August 2013 a team of Year 7 boys represented Kinross College in the Glory Boys’ Cup. The competition was a day carnival consisting of two pools with the top of each pool playing off in the final. The day started off on a positive note with the College receiving a certificate of appreciation for being a foundation school of the competition and having entered teams every year for the ten years the competition has been around. The team performed extremely well over the entire day winning all but one of its games. The one loss we had was a very close game with Kinross having many late opportunities to tie the game, however, at the final whistle the score was 2-1. This one defeat meant that we finished second in our pool and unfortunately missed out on a finals berth. None the less, all the boys should be congratulated on their efforts and the positive manner in which they represented the College. It was pleasing to see such high levels of endeavour and sportsmanship from every individual player that contributed to the overall success of the team. Thank you to Lee, Elliot and Ellis who assisted with coaching and umpiring on the day.

Our Whole School Athletics Carnival was again a huge success providing an opportunity to showcase some of our truly talented athletes.

The carnival kicked off with jump and throw events on the Wednesday and followed up with our track and tabloid events on the Friday of week 9 this term.

After trialling all term to qualify for positions in events, students had the opportunity to demonstrate their athletic prowess in a range of jump, throw and track events earning both individual points and points for their community. Students who weren’t involved in track events represented their community in a range of tabloid activities which were once again a big hit!

The half-time lunch break hosted an outstanding cheerleading competition, (congratulations to Forrest), while students enjoyed a sausage sizzle.

I’d like to thank:

• all of the students whose behaviour and enthusiasm on the day was outstanding;

• the spectators who came along to support the kids;

• all of the teachers and parent helpers who worked hard to ensure the success of the day,

• and not forgetting the Phys. Ed. staff who did an outstanding job in the lead up and the overall running of the carnival.
