Pigging out, being glued to our computers and going on

TELL-TALESA Biography of My GrandmotherMy grandmother, Wu Yuen Fen, was born in Guangzhou in 1927 and passed away in 2008.

My grandmother spent her childhood on farmland. Since her family was impoverished, she never had the chance to go to school and had to cultivate the cropland.

When she later grew up into a young lady, her family arranged a marriage for her with my grandfather without the consent of the couple. They then had five children.

However, the marriage was not long-lasting.

After Grandpa had become unemployed, he became a compulsive gambler. He went gambling all day long. He lost all of their money and he even stole the furniture from their home to generate money for gambling. He finally got into heavy debt and ran away irresponsibly, leaving Grandma and their f ive children.

Grandma was only in her thirties at the time. She and her f ive children were left completely penniless with the huge debt. Having to discharge the debt and take care of f ive children, she was lost and did not know what to do.

She had a diff icult life afterwards. In order to earn a living and get out of debt, she worked very hard. She was a docker in the day time and doggedly made plastic f lowers in the

evening. Even though she was very tired after work every day, she still had to take care of her children and perform tasks such as preparing meals and cleaning.

However hardworking she was, she only earned a little. In addition, since most of her income was used for repaying debt, they had a destitute life

back then. With insuff icient food, Grandma would rather eat less so as to give more to her f ive children.

Her efforts paid off. In the sunset of her days, she had a better life. All f ive children found good jobs and earned a decent living.

Unfor tunately, Grandma was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in her eighties.

Her life took such a winding road that I have learnt to appreciate her positive attitude towards life a lot.

“Jeremiah! Jeremiah Lee!” whispered Jeremiah’s friend, Merry Weather.

“What?” he asked, walking to her lab bench.

“Look!” Merry was holding a speaker linked to a complicated mass of wires. “If I link this, and this, and press this button, then the speaker will start ringing!”

Merry pressed the button. Ring! The speaker started ringing so loudly that everyone covered their ears with their hands.

“Merry! Turn it off.” Jeremiah shouted over the noise.

“Wait! The button’s malfunctioning.” Merry screamed. Jeremiah looked carefully at the circuit, and then pulled a few wires. The ringing stopped. Suddenly, there were siren sounds outside.

The substitute teacher looked up. “It’s the police,” he announced. “Hurry, kids. We need to evacuate this place.” All of Jeremiah’s classmates carried their schoolbags and followed the sub.

“Hey! Mr. Substitute Teacher! But…” Jeremiah shouted.

“What?” barked the sub. He then pull a gun out and pointed it at Jeremiah.

“No Buts!” he growled.

“But I really need to go to the bathroom, sir!” Jeremiah said. “May I go to the bathroom? Please? It’s urgent!” he pleaded.

“Hmph. Fine. Three minutes.”

Three minutes later…

“Do not fear, Jeri Telstar is here!” Jeri kicked the door open and tried to look as heroic as he could.

“Mwah ha ha…cough…cough!” the sub started coughing, “Du-

oh: Time for my pills!” He took a pack of pills out.

Jeri turned and looked at the sub. “You are Mega Mango, the villain! Wait, is that the cherry f lavoured cough pills that is on sale for $50 a pack?”

Mega Mango hugged the pills to his chest. “Yeah! And I’m NOT sharing!”

“But my grandma says that sharing is caring,” squeaked Jeri.

“No!” cried the Mega Mango. “No way! And I only have one left anyway,” he smirked.

Jeri pouted. “We can have half each,” he said.

“I said no! No means NO!” and Mega Mango swallowed the pill.

“Aww Man!” cried Jeri. “Hmph! You are SO MEAN!” Jeri Telstar tapped his boots together and rose into the air.

“Ha ha ha ha ha!” Mega Mango laughed hysterically. “A little puny hero like you can save the world? The world must have gone crazy!” Jeri was going to punch him when his watch started beeping.

His grandma’s face went onto the screen. “Jeremiah Lee! What on earth are you doing? You should be in the Science Lab having your science class!” she screeched.

“But…”

“No buts. You’re grounded!”

“Grandma, it’s urgent!”

“Your science class is urgent. Over and out.” and with that, Jeri’s boots turned yellow and he dropped to the ground.

“Ha ha ha! Ho ho ho! You let your granny control your super

powers?! Ha ha ha!” Mega Mango laughed untill he cried.

Jeri Telstar’s cheeks f lared. “She’s not a granny. She’s my Grandma Nan. And she works with Nan2 and Nan3 to produce nano power!” he shouted.

“Mwah ha ha ha… Nan1, Nan2 and Nan3! That’s the lamest thing I’ve ever heard!” He grabbed a piece of chalk and started to scribble on the blackboard, “Nan1 plus Nan2 plus Nan3, equals – Nano power! Ha ha…”

“Hands up!” a voice boomed through the room. It was the police. Mega Mango took his gun out and pointed it at Jeri.

“If you move, I’ll kill him,” he snarled. All the policemen except one moved back. “Hey, wait! I told you I would kill this little guy, and I am a man of my words. So, I am going to kill him! Mwah ha he” He turned around and was ready to pull the trigger Jeri, but his gun was missing! Then he looked at Jeri. Jeri Telstar was holding his gun. “Wait. Wha—How did you do that?”

Jeri held his watch out. “Magnetic force field,” he smirked.

“That’s not fair!” Mega Mango cried. “You can’t do that!” The police rushed up to handcuff him. “Aww Man!”

“Page 288 of the science textbook states that some guns are made of magnetic metals, so I decided to give it a try.” Jeri said.

“Wah…I want my mommy!” cried Mega Mango.

And that is how Jeri saved the day. Again.

Things have changed. They are no longer the same. We have walked a long way, and we are f inally here. The guards

escort me to my room, and I scrutinize it in satisfaction. My own private space! Floors I do not need to wash, beds I do not need to make, no men to serve. Instead, they are now serving me.

The guards gently close the door. I stroll around my room, and inspect my surroundings. Some wallpaper is falling off, I muse, but well, that is to be expected judging from the appearance of this castle. It is quite old and shabby, painted in a dirty tint of beige with a sense of grotesqueness. But all these can be f ixed, these insignif icant trivialities would never cover up the overwhelming happiness of escaping from men’s grasps. No, no, it is not escaping. Instead, it is obtaining the authority to control them.

I lower myself onto the bed, which squeaks in elation that such an authoritative f igure is lowering her status to receive its service. Sparkling rays of the sun creep in through the barred windows to focus their light on me, the almighty woman, the f irst woman who will be standing on top of all men tomorrow morning.

I caught sight of other maidens as I was being escorted to my room, but they did not even dare to look up. Although they had lowered their heads, I was sure that their eyes were actually sparkling with admiration, and hoped that one day they would be like me. But no worries my little darlings, after tomorrow, I will release you as well. I will order the men to serve you as they are serving me. I will allocate my power to you, so we can all stand above those fools.

Silent sobs are heard from the next chamber, and I wonder who it is. I am new here so I do not really know the other inhabitants of this castle. But since I have to prepare for tomorrow’s ceremony, I suppress my urge to visit the poor girl as I do not want to trouble my guards, who would def initely wish their Majesty would spend her time gussying up. Either way, I am sure she is currently drowned in tears of happiness as tomorrow will mark the new beginning of our age.

Although it is fascinating to be freed from men’s domination, being a Queen is unexpectedly boring. There is nothing much you can do other than staying in your room and gussying up, which is why I ordered the guards not to send maids in to do my hair, because if they help me in that too, I will literally have nothing to do. It kind of pissed me off as they did not really respond when I made my orders, but at least they still followed my instructions. I should f ix their attitude as soon as possible, so they will not be a disgrace to the people.

Ah… here comes dinner. What felicity it is to be able to have a free supper which you do not have to prepare yourself! How splendid it will be to enjoy such a privilege every day!

Just a few days ago, I was still trapped in that jail with my husband, working on stupid housekeeping as he was out hunting, while feeling anxious about what crisis would happen when he returned. If he had a good hunt, he would not make a

fuss. But if he had had a bad day, he would complain about every little thing, abuse me or compare me to other wives. I chuckle in bliss that I no longer have to tolerate such shor t-tempered monster.

But I could not be mad, could I? I had to love him more than anyone. I could not think of anyone else other than him. The day I knew I had been elected as

the New Queen, I decided to thank him for everything he did, including striking me on the head with his rif le the day before. I tried to make him look smart in his red suit. I dyed his head an enchanting shocking red. I made him an ambrosial meal, the most exotic one. It was the f irst time I had felt delighted when I prepared supper. The knife cut into the meat, forming a bewitching crucif ix, the way how limbs twisted, how the red holy water f lowed! It was just beautiful!

He did not taste it though. I knocked at his door at the time of supper, but he was not in. The door was opened, and his room was f illed with cerise insects. What ‘interesting’ aestheticism! I never understand him, as he is always weird and impatient. I did not dare to waste his energy by having him use his voice for a chat.

He did not come and see me off when I was escorted by the guards in the cart, as he still had not come back from his hunt yet. His bed was unmoved and quiet. Strange, but I was actually looking forward to seeing him before I went.

I sample the supper. Not bad, but it could be better. Looks like I will have to polish the cook’s culinary skills later, or at least have him prepare a meal as delicious as the one I had prepared, and have him prepare appetizers and desser ts next time. Men are really fools. Isn’t it common sense that royalty are supposed to have a full menu instead of just a main course which is only decent?

But I will leave all the complaints for after the ceremony, where I will fully obtain my authority. Today seems like the longest day of my life, probably because I’m overly excited about tomorrow’s parade. To shorten the wait, I resort to rest and unconsciousness.

I had a dream that night, a dream of f ire, of heat, of a gorgeous room painted in red and yellow. Such beautiful colours! After tomorrow, I will ask the men to build me a f ireplace and make me a red gown and paint my room yellow.

The guards’ hoarse voices break my dream.

It’s time…. It’s time! IT’S TIME! How could I sleep in on such an important day?

Luckily, I had already prepared myself last night.

The guards help me put on my rope bracelet, and accompany me out of the castle to the podium. And now, I am facing a multitude of people, standing above them all, while they have to straighten their necks to see my complexion.

Social status! How adorable you are!

One of the guards strides to my side. Holding an elegant necklace made of rope, he tightens it around my neck.

Oh yes! I forgot about the necklace! I really am lucky to have such attentive guards!

I step up to the edge of the podium gingerly to examine everyone’s faces. Women are still in the habit of lowering their heads, while the men look up at their new empress longingly.

I can feel it. They want me to come down. They desire me.

Should I?

Or should I not?

They are not like my lovely guards, and they have treated me cruelly. Should I listen to them?

I turn to seek advice from my guards, who prompt me to answer the citizens’ call. Well, since I’m the Queen, I should try to satisfy my people, while at the same time keeping my position above them.

So I jump down.

The women f linched. They clutched their garments tightly to seek comfort as they heard the cracking of the neck bones. But when some of them looked up, they became mesmerized by the hypnotising woman-shaped pendulum. They could hear the call, the call for revenge, the call for breakthrough, and felt something unknown sprouting deep inside their hearts.

The men clapped and cheered, as the pathogen which killed one of their kinds had been eradicated. They did not know how the man had died, and they did not know what he had died of. They only thing they knew was that the man’s room was painted with blood and the coagulated liquid trailed to his wife’s room, caught between dripping and solidifying on the woman’s apron. They only knew that, and that was all they needed to know. However what they didn’t know was that the pathogen had already found new hosts, and they were near. They were getting closer and closer…

Slowly, one by one, the audience returned home, with wives and daughters trailing after husbands and fathers back to their incubators.

Feeling, Hearing, Seeing Nature squelch, squelch,I feel the mud between my toes.whoosh, whoosh,I feel the wind under my nose.

pitter-patter,I hear the rain quickly shatter.croak, croak,I hear the frogs happily chatter.

plop, plop,I see the ducks go skinny-dipping.shush, shush,I see the leaves quietly shivering.

A Dustman On a cool autumn dawnA dustman,Wearing many more clothes than usual,Was cleaning the street. He swept away the falling leaves,He swept away his laughter,He swept away his memories,Focusing only on his tiring work.

He looked so miserable,Like an old man who just lost his lovely wife,With just a little bit of imagination,You would show a lot of sympathy.

O please give him his soul back,Please give him his laughter back,Just take away his sadnessAnd let him be at peace.

Along the way to the top,Obstacles are secretly approaching,Every step is hard,But nothing can stop me.It is only the beginning.

Clouds come along,The sky is darkening.I can see nothing, dark blinds my eyes.Rain and storms block the beams of light.Thunder’s hair at the back rises,It affects my direction.I can only stay,Disappointedly waiting for the coming of another day.

Life is a train. To travel to many places,To widen its views,To see different things.

Life is a train.Sometimes it runs faster,But sometimes it runs slower,Because there are ups and downs along the way.

Life is a train.Although the route is bumpy,It will not stop,Until it arrives at the station.

Childhood I rode on the swaying swing,With nothingTo worry about.I loved chasing bewitching butterflies and to doubtWhether they could give me a pair of wings,To let me soar into the sky and find out who was the King,So omnipotent that could rule the vital skies.I would then close my eyes,To feel the mild breeze ruff ling my hair,Whispering to me that it was great fun to swoosh in the air.

I begged him to bring me to the unknown world up there. However, I didn’t have enough money for the fare.He was so amiable and said that I could go there for free,Unfortunately I was stung by a bumble-bee,He consoled me with soft words.I tried to bind the bumble-bee with cords. However, I failed.

Time flies,But childhood never dies.

Life is a Train

When I was three,I fell down whilst running and scraped my knee.I screamed loudly for you.You pulled me into a hug and said,‘You’ll be fine, don’t worry, your wounds will mend.I’ll be here if you need me, just get up and try again.’

Years later, when I was ten,My exams were on the next day.I was having nightmares again. You calmed me down and told meThat I would be fine, and shouldn’t worry,Just give it my best shot.Because then you’ll know that I’ve tried,And my best will always be the best.

When I was thirteen,I fell out with all my friends, they were so mean.I lost my way, I rarely smiled andYou sat down and pleaded with me, ‘Please pull yourself together.Where’s my little girl, with her pocket full of dreams?Don’t hinder yourself, there’s so much more you can be!Remember I believe in you, even when no one else does.I always have. And I always will do.’

Days pass and months f ly by, now I’m nearly f ifteen. We don’t always see eye to eye.I’ve tripped up a few times, but I seldom cry.I’m still stressed out, but I still try.I won’t let little things upset me anymore.Do you know why?Because you have faith in me,Because you bail me out, calm me down, and dry my tears. And quite simply,Because you’ve always loved me.So I have something to say to you.Mum, I love you too,Just the way you love me: unconditionally.

To My Mother

Different shades of three colors, red, blue and yellow and straight lines were used to illustrate the legendary f lying unicorn with the power to purify poisoned water and to heal sickness. The mysterious creature is a symbol of purity and grace. The reoccurring angular pattern in this acrylic on canvas painting gives this work a modern and abstract twist.

Suddenly the sun rises,Giving me passion and affection.Fiercely the sun shines and all barricades disappear.Darkness vanishes promptly, and brightness comes silently.

Wind softly blows the sadness away.Flowers and trees are being woken up.Twitter! Twitter! Twitter! Birds are creating a harmony.Gracefully, I pick up my bag,Zip the zigzags and continue on my way.Looking at the clear blue sky,

A rainbow appears amazingly.Along the way to the top,No matter what the journey brings, I will f ight against evil.Creating my way,Breaking through myself for a brand new journey.
