ObjectPossessive
Direct Object: The noun or pronoun that receives the action. It answers the question whom or
what after the action verb.
The goalie threw the ball to his teammate.
I ate apple pie for dessert.
Not all action verbs have direct objects!
The dog ran around the living room.They walked to the store.

1. The equator divides Africa in two.

Pronouns as direct objects
Object Pronouns: Not all pronouns can be used as a

Pronouns in a compound direct object:
• Must always follow the noun*Trick: Cover the noun before the pronoun and read
the sentence. Which pronoun makes sense?Example: My mom told my sister and (I, me) to
go to our rooms. Practice: Use the trick and circle the correct pronoun.1. The coach warned the other players and (we, us)
to play fairly. 2. The teacher scolded Erica and (she, her) about

party.
Object of the Preposition
• The noun or pronoun that follows the preposition and ends the prepositional phrase.
• Example: During the class, the students worked on an expository essay.
• Example: She walked toward him to give him his Valentine.
Practice
Practice: Underline the prepositional phrase in each sentence. Then circle the object of the preposition.
1. After the movie, we played a board game.
2. I passed him the ball, but it went over him.
