In order for a play to be considered a musical it must contain three components

Types of SongsThere are 4 more types of songs that can appear

in a musical:The first type of songs is a Trunk Song:

◦ A Trunk Song is a song written for one Musical, cut out from it, then used in a different musical. Sometimes it’s just a small theme, sometimes it’s a whole song.

◦ Andrew Lloyd Webber uses this type of song all the time

Show Stopper:Is a song when performed

curtain so the set can be changed behind it.◦Example:

These numbers are not as common as the rest

Act 1/Act 2 FinaleAct 1 Finale will end the first act so the

audience can take a break, or intermission. The characters are usually at their lowest point so the audience will come back to see the resolution:◦ Example: http://

the plot has reached it’s resolution either comedicly or tragically. All problems are solved through this number.◦ Example:

In ConclusionEach song is unique in it’s own

form, but all of them will move the story forward and give the audience precious information about the plot, characters, conflicts, and resolutions.

The only difference is that it is done through song and dance (musically) rather than through speech.
