More about

Marbled Paper

Marbled paper is most popular with the honored art of book binding, used for endpapers. That’s why we have made the paper our catalogues“end paper” this issue. This lookis achevied by dropping color ontoa viscous solution called size, and then carefully transferring the pattern to an absorbent surface such as paper or fabric. All sorts of patterns are possible, ranging from a true marble look to more advanced shapes like spirals (below) or peacock tails!

Marbled paper was used from Asia to central Europe. The earliest form of marbled paper was found in China, and was created in the year 986 CE. Text was written on a marbled scroll, as opposed to just using the papers as endpapers. After traveling to Asia, European explorers brought this marbled paper back to their homes, where artisans quickly mastered the technique. European end papers are much more vibrant than ones found in Asia, all having to do with the application of the paper. Make sure to check out Bellissimo Books’ wide selection of antique books, many featuring beautiful examples of this amazing paper.
