Containment and the Domino Theory

George Kennen1946-1947

USSR is inherently expansionist and, if not held at bay, will try to take over the world.

One country becoming communist will cause instability among neighbors and will fall, too.

Six Degrees of the Cold War:Korea:1. Communist leader Kim Ill Sung takes control of the northern part of the

Korean Peninsula2. United Nations condemns action, establishes military force to stop him

(containment)3. U.N forces and U.S. face Chinese forces after beating back Kim to Chinese

border (Yalu River)4. Cease fire established after much fighting, war never formally ended.5. Kim Ill Sung dies, Kim Jong Ill takes power, threatens South Korea, capture

USS Pueblo after jets fire on her, gains support by provoking Americans during his rule.

6. Kim Jong Ill dies, Kim Jong Un takes control, threatens South Korea, U.S. and Japan with nuclear weapons, shuts down Kaesong Industrial Complex.

Six Degrees of the Cold War:Iran/ Iraq: 1. Deposing of Mohammad Mosaddeq (beginning of Argo)2. overthrow of the Shah by Iranian students and clerics, U.S. granting him asylum3. 8 year war with Iraq, U.S. supports Saddam against Iran (who buys lots military

gear from Soviets because we won't sell to them)4. Saddam uses lots of weapons against own people, eventually invades Kuwait

for more oil wealth, U.S. and U.N. defeat him in Desert Storm, establish No Fly Zones in north and south to prevent Saddam from using air power against own people as he did against Kurds and Shiites with chemical and bio weapons

5. Dismantles WMD, but this is still used as a pretext for war in 2003, Saddam captured and hung, U.S. forces take over

6. Country destabilizes, Shiite/Sunni/ Kurdish government established, Iran supplies weapons and training to Shiite militias fighting against American and Sunni forces

One can also make the argument that Iranian tension also comes now from their desire to see Israel wiped off the map, but the path above points to direct conflict between Iran and U.S. forces.

Six Degrees of the Cold War:Afghanistan/ Pakistan:1. Soviet invasion 2. CIA support of Mujahadeen, Soviets leave (clips of Charlie Wilson’s

War)3. American support ends and power vacuum exists, Taliban takes over,

allows training of Islamist fundamentalists like Osama bin Laden 4. bin Laden and Al-Qaeda launch attacks on U.S. personnel in Africa

(embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania), Middle East (USS Cole), and finally on U.S. soil (9/11)

5. America invades Afghanistan6. Former Taliban seek refuge in tribal Waziristan (northern Pakistan)

turning area into haven for Islamic Fundamentalists7. Drone strikes by U.S. further turns Pakistani support against the U.S.
