A Note FromJeanne’s Journal
Love can come at unexpectedtimes and in unusual ways.Sometimes love comes in theform of a four-footed,tail-wagging, cold nosed pup.Meet Sugar, an American Eskimodog who has been the belovedfamily pet of Charlotte and KenMcPherson for the past 10 years. They had gotten her from theirson, Kevin, when she was just alittle pup. Born the runt of thelitter, Sugar was a tiny, yetdetermined puppy. TheMcPhersons loved their life inFlorida, as did Sugar. The warmweather allowed for lots ofoutdoor time. Sugar was a naturalwith the other condo owners inthe building where theMcPhersons lived. Just as sweet asher name, everyone loved Sugar!
Failing health was causingmajor challenges for Char andKen. To make matters moredifficult, in order to get the helpthey needed and to be closer tofamily, it meant a move backhome to Illinois. With sad hearts,
the McPhersons had to make theagonizing decision to put Sugar ina kennel until they couldget settled.
As luck (and love) would haveit, the McPherson family foundBelmont Village and Char andKen moved into our communityat the end of September. TheBelmont staff quickly fell in lovewith the McPhersons, as they dowith all residents! But a veryspecial and completelyunexpected bond occurredbetween Char and one of ourteam members.
Carmella, age 6, and the twins,Francesca and Jack, age 9, hadbeen begging their mom, MariaWinkelhake, Belmont VillageCommunity Relations Associatefor a dog for years. While Mariaand her husband wanted to have afamily pet, they weren’t sure theywere ready to commit to theresponsibility of a four-footedfriend quite yet.

Char, Ken and Sugar
Jeanne’s JournalContinued
Upon hearing Sugar’s story,Maria and Char came up with aplan. The Winkelhake familywould foster Sugar at their homeon a trial basis. As in the best lovestories ever told, it was truly “loveat first sight.” Within minutes, theWinkelhake clan quickly fell inlove with Sugar. As best we cantell, Sugar also fell in love too asevidenced by her snuggling up onthe sofa with the children withinthe first 24 hours of being in her“new home.”
Maria says Sugar is nowproudly the sixth member of theWinkelhake family. The childrenare taking great care of Sugar andare proud of their new four-footedfamily member. Sugar seemspretty comfy, too. Curled up at thefoot of Carmella’s bed is where
you will find Sugar each night. Our love story doesn’t end
quite yet. The beauty of this lovestory is that Sugar still comes tosee Char and Ken at BelmontVillage every week. Maria bringsSugar to work with her twice aweek, so the McPhersons andSugar can be together. We thinkSugar loves being at Belmont, too.She is a natural around theresidents with her very sweet andgentle nature. Char said it bestwhen she said, “I’m so happy thatMaria and her family love Sugar asmuch as we do.”
Love ... it truly is amany-splendored thing.
