In light of this, I thought I would take this opportunity to address the exciting topic of tax deductibility in this newsletter. As a resident or family member of a resident who lives in a building that provides an assisted living option, you should be aware of the potential tax benefits set forth by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. The Act states that the cost of maintenance or personal care services falls under the definition of medical care expenses. In order to be able to deduct these expenses, you must receive certification from a licensed health care provider that (1) you are unable to perform at least two activities of daily living, or suffer from severe cognitive impairment and require supervision, AND (2) include a plan of care that prescribes assisting living as an effective option for care. If you meet the above requirements, then some or all of your Belmont expenses may be deductible. If you would like more information, please contact me and I will send you Belmont Village’s Tax Information form. I also encourage you to consult with your personal tax advisor to help determine if you qualify for this tax deduction. Additionally, I want to take this opportunity to remind you all that extreme caution should always be exercised before sharing personal financial details with anyone else. While there are many honest people out there, there are also unfortunately a number of unscrupulous ones who target seniors specifically in hopes of scamming them out of their life’s savings. We have heard of various phone scams out there that promise seniors lottery money or investment income potential if they just share some of their personal financial information and/or send money. Please be wary of these scams. If you are unsure of someone who is asking you for your information, please reach out to a trusted friend, family member or advisor before proceeding. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Here’s to a healthy financial future!

From the WellnessCenter

Summertime is a season of theyear where you can have lots offun doing outdoor activities. Sunexposure is important for humanbeings. Vitamin D is produced inthe skin when it is exposed toultraviolet B radiation andVitamin D places a key role inthe absorption of calcium.

Even though sun is good inour lives, it is important tofollow some precautions toprotect our skin and eyes.

Everyone should wear asunscreen with SPF of 15 orhigher with a broad-spectrumagent (protects against UVA andUVB). Some moisturizers havean SPF, but not all do. Checkthe label.

Sunscreen takes 15 to 20minutes to kick into high gear,so apply it before you leavethe house.

Sun exposure has been linkedto cataract formation and, possibly, macular degeneration. And not just any old tintedglasses will help. To protect theeyes from harmful ultraviolet(UV) rays, you need to makesure your regular glasses andsunglasses have 100% UVprotection.

Also, don’t forget to drinkenough water. Hydration is veryimportant to keep our bodyhealthy. Happy Summer!
