Greetings Resident, Family andFriends,
As I write this, many of us inAmerica are frantically trying tofinish up taxes by the April 15deadline. In light of this, I thoughtI would take this opportunity toaddress the exciting topic of taxdeductibility in this newsletter. Asa resident or family member of aresident who lives in a buildingthat provides an assisted livingoption, you should be aware ofthe potential tax benefits set forthby the Health InsurancePortability and Accountability Actof 1996. The Act states that thecost of maintenance or personalcare services falls under thedefinition of medical careexpenses. In order to be able todeduct these expenses, you mustreceive certification from alicensed health care provider that(1) you are unable to perform atleast two activities of daily living,or suffer from severe cognitiveimpairment and requiresupervision, AND (2) include a
plan of care that prescribesassisting living as an effectiveoption for care. If you meet theabove requirements, then some orall of your Belmont expenses maybe deductible. If you would likemore information, please contactme and I will send you BelmontVillage’s Tax Information form. Ialso encourage you to consultwith your personal tax advisor tohelp determine if you qualify forthis tax deduction.
Additionally, I want to take thisopportunity to remind you all thatextreme caution should always beexercised before sharing personalfinancial details with anyone else. While there are many honestpeople out there, there are alsounfortunately a number ofunscrupulous ones who targetseniors specifically in hopes ofscamming them out of their life’ssavings. We have heard of variousphone scams out there thatpromise seniors lottery money orinvestment income potential ifthey just share some of theirpersonal financial informationand/or send money. Please bewary of these scams. If you areunsure of someone who is askingyou for your information, pleasereach out to a trusted friend, family member or advisor beforeproceeding. It is always better tobe safe than sorry. Here’s to ahealthy financial future!

Summertime is a season of theyear where you can have lots offun doing outdoor activities. Sunexposure is important for humanbeings. Vitamin D is produced inthe skin when it is exposed toultraviolet B radiation andVitamin D places a key role inthe absorption of calcium.
Even though sun is good inour lives, it is important tofollow some precautions toprotect our skin and eyes.
Everyone should wear asunscreen with SPF of 15 orhigher with a broad-spectrumagent (protects against UVA andUVB). Some moisturizers havean SPF, but not all do. Checkthe label.
Sunscreen takes 15 to 20minutes to kick into high gear,so apply it before you leavethe house.
Sun exposure has been linkedto cataract formation and, possibly, macular degeneration. And not just any old tintedglasses will help. To protect theeyes from harmful ultraviolet(UV) rays, you need to makesure your regular glasses andsunglasses have 100% UVprotection.
Also, don’t forget to drinkenough water. Hydration is veryimportant to keep our bodyhealthy. Happy Summer!
