These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey — the successful 1967 referendum, which changed the constitution of Australia so as to include Aboriginal Australians in determinations of population, and also empowered the Federal Parliament to legislate specifically for aborigines, and the High Court Mabo decision, regarding native title, respectively. National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Enhancing Catholic Identity Survey – Voucher winnersThank you to the parents who completed the Enhancing Catholic Identity survey last term. The parent, student and staff responses are being tallied and the data considered by the staff at the Leuven University in Belgium. In July some senior staff will have a Skype interview with their staff and then later this year we will receive a written report on our data to help inform directions. In completing the parent survey, three vouchers for spending at Hambours were available to parents who completed the whole survey. A draw was held of those who provided their completion certificate and I am pleased to let you know that the following three parents were the winners of the vouchers: Scott Marston, Tiffany Riddle and Grant Eldridge. Best wishes and blessings

Mr John Konopka, Principal

Congratulations to Tesharna Maher who was selected in the South Australian U18 Girls AFL squad. The squad played against the Northern Territory last week winning both games comfortably. Tesharna is also a member of the Women’s Aboriginal AFL Academy and playing for SMOSH West Lakes as well as representing West Adelaide in the SANFLW. South Australia and the Northern Territory will now combine to become the Central Allies to take part in the 2018 AFL Under 18 National Championship on the Gold Coast. We wish Tesharna the best of luck on selection in this team.

Pollution is an ever-increasing danger which continues to harm both humanity and the ecosystem. It is one of the biggest killers around the globe which affects hundreds of millions of people. Common day pollution is derived from many

sources such as the burning of fossil fuels (petroleum used in everyday cars) and even the disposing of plastic bags. The Australian Bureau of Statistics has used and compared data from previous years based on air pollution. Previous years have shown to have a much lower pollution rate than current years.

The rise in pollution is due to the increased use of motor vehicles, more people smoking and increased fires. All these release molecular compounds known as Nitric Oxides which results in acid rain, human respiratory issues and potential lung damage.

Plastic has been noted to end up in water ways and oceans killing off the ecosystem as we know it. Imagine a world a few hundred years from now with no fish, no water parks, no drinkable water too?

From the College Board Chair

Dear friends

I’m delighted to join with you in congratulating John Konopka on his official appointment to the position of Mount Carmel College Principal, effective from Term 3.

Recruiting a Principal in any school is a significant task, with far-reaching implications for leadership, strategic direction, and learning outcomes. The consultation to appoint our new Principal began several months ago, in order to gather the thoughts of students, staff, and parents in our community as to what the next phase of leadership should look like at Mount Carmel College.

While John has been acting in the role for nearly eighteen months, this substantive appointment is an affirmation of his outstanding contribution to date and of his ideas for the future. Mount Carmel College is in an exciting time as we prepare for new buildings, an expansion of the College middle schooling into Year 7, and a number of other future-focussed projects.

Alongside the other members of the College Board, I’m looking forward to working further with John, and offer my warm congratulations for this next chapter of leadership both for our school, and within the Catholic North Western Community.

As always, you are welcome to add your own words of support by getting in touch with myself via the Board, or with John directly, through the front office.

Yours in service

World Environment: Pollution

World Environment Day occurs once every year on 5 June to help raise awareness to the increasing threat known as pollution. You can help kill off this threat too, make the world a more liveable haven, for both yourself and others around. To do this doesn’t even require much effort.

Minor things such as going for a walk if the original plan was to drive around the corner, will begin minimising air pollution. Re-using plastic bags for shopping results in less being thrown away, burned or potentially ending up in the ecosystem.

A few resources can be found through the following links below, one resource shows the increasing pollution rates, while the other leads to the World Environment Day website to help you beat plastic pollution.

Senior Learning Centre and Year 7 Redevelopment

The Senior Learning Centre and Year 7 Redevelopment have begun in earnest this week.

Our builder, Partek Construction and Interiors are well known to Mount Carmel College through their work on the Rosewater Trade Training Centre which was completed in 2014 and we welcome them back for this new and significant project. They have already installed their huts and placed fencing around the building sites which you will no doubt notice when passing the College. It is important to note that during construction the builders will close Miles Street between John Street and the entrance to our number 1 carpark so access will be limited. We suggest that students are dropped off in Newcastle Street during this time. It’s expected that the closure will remain in place until April 2019. I have included a letter that is going out to the local residents informing them of this closure and I encourage any members of the community to contact either Jeff Bruce, Site Manager, or myself at the College if you wish to share any comments or concerns.

This is the most significant and ambitious building project ever undertaken by the College and we will keep you informed of the building progress during the year.

Year 11 Child Studies

The Year 11 Child Studies class has been busy sewing baby items suitable for newborns that could be given as a gift. Students

investigated why it is special to handmake an item that shows skill, commitment of time and can be individualised to make a unique item. As part of this assignment students were required to make newborn clothing items, a beanie and a toy. Students needed to show skill in following patterns and instructions and using the sewing machines proficiently. Students also learnt how to use the overlocker and embroidery machines as an advancement in their skills. As you can see the diligence in the students work produced some outstanding items.

As part of the Stage 1 Business and Enterprise curriculum, students go on a field study to observe businesses. The best way to consolidate the learning and see the businesses in action is to go on an excursion and experience it first-hand. On Wednesday, 30 May the Stage 1 Business and Enterprise students travelled by train and tram to the Central Market to partake in a tour of the market and interview stall holders about their business.

After being divided into two groups the tour guides explained about different stalls and the students were able to taste some of the offerings from selected stalls. Then in pairs they interviewed one stall in more detail for their report. They will be completing formative and summative tasks as a result of the excursion.

The students had an interesting experience and enjoyed the day. Mr Judd and Mr Newman were the accompanying teachers attending this excursion.

World Environment Week: Nude Food DayThis week, the College is celebrating World Environment Week and the Year 9 Student Leaders are aiming to raise awareness of the amount of pollution caused

by plastic packaging. On Thursday 7 June, we encourage all students to participate in Nude Food Day. Nude Foods are foods that come without disposable packaging, or come in their own natural packaging. Students can place their food in reusable containers or bring food with natural packaging such as fruit etc. The aim is to reduce the amount of plastic packaging that enters our waste system, which can make its way into our marine environments, harming ecosystems and animal species.

Ms Tania Daniele, Year 8 CoordinatorMrs Celina Bolding, Year 9 Coordinator

Brainstorm Production: The Hurting GameOn Friday 25 May, the Middle Years students all attending the production The Hurting Game performed by Brainstorm Productions. The play explored the themes of growing up, relationships, bullying and social media. The students found the play to be engaging and thought – provoking, with many of the themes being explored further in classes over the following weeks.

Change of Semester: End of Week 8Week 8 will be the last week of Semester 1. As of Week 9, all Middle Years students will have a change of timetable

and change of elective/splits subjects. Year 9 students have been given their new elective subjects and the Year 8 students will swap to the splits subjects that they did not do in Semester 1. These changes will be communicated to the students via their new timetables prior to Week 8. Students are reminded to check stationery requirements for their new subjects in preparation for Week 9.

Wishing all families a safe and restful long weekend.

8 MCC News @ the Mount - Issue 8, 7 June 2018

In Week 4 the Year 9 students all went on a day long retreat, half the cohort on one day and the others the day after.

The smaller groups enabled us to base the retreat day in the centre of Port Adelaide, where we focussed on Mary MacKillop’s arrival in 1867, the year after she founded the Sisters of St Joseph. Although the students missed having all their friends from other classes present on their retreat day, having fewer students present on each retreat meant their conversations during the sessions were more focussed on the retreat theme. Students from 9 Blue reflected on their retreat experience. The following summary of the day comprises comments written by Andy, Tracey, Vivian, Cassie, Jay,Van-Leon, Tanisha, and Breanna.

We went to Port Adelaide Uniting Church hall to reflect on ourselves, St Mary of the Cross, God’s role in life, and how people can be “Lights for the Journey” throughout their life.

By doing activities such as talking, sharing, and walking in the footsteps of Mary we were able to reflect upon ourselves and our life decisions. For example, one activity involved talking about different types of lights. This made us think about what is light, what is our goal, and who shows us what to do. These were questions that only we can answer.

We also did activities that helped us recognise and celebrate our gifts and talents.

In small groups we created our own prayers about what we are grateful for. To finish the day, we walked to St Mary’s Church for our liturgy, as the Josephite sisters went straight there after arriving in Port Adelaide in 1867.

This retreat has taught me about Mary and her arrival in Port Adelaide. I learned that the Josephite sisters set up the first school in a stone building next door to St Mary’s Church.

The retreat helped me to have more confidence in my abilities, gifts, and talents. It also helped me socialise with individuals I wouldn’t normally interact with.

My thoughts about the day were that it was a fun experience to learn about Mary MacKillop and her life.

From this retreat I learnt to be more helpful to others and to not to be selfish. Overall it was a good day.

Throughout these activities, I felt like I connected with Mary and her life.

I sometimes found it difficult to reflect on myself because I don’t usually pay much attention to myself but rather on other things such as people or objects.

Overall, the day was good. One of my highlights was when we got to walk to the wharf to see where Mary first arrived in Port Adelaide, and to imagine what it would have been like when Mary stepped off the ship for the first time.

As always, there has been much happening for the

Year 11 students over the past fortnight. The Senior Formal, that was held on Friday, 24 May, was an excellent evening and gave our students an opportunity to dress up and put their best foot forward. I would like to commend each and every Year 11 student who attended the Senior Formal for your comportment on the evening and in the lead up to the event. As I am sure parents would agree, it was amazing to see so many young people so elegantly attired and so proper in their demeanour. I would also like to thank the Year 11 students for their participation in the Reconciliation Mass in Week 5.

Further to this I would like to draw attention to the impending changes that are occurring over the next few weeks. Firstly, and most importantly, I ask all parents to be aware of the impending exam week for the Year 11 students, this will be occurring in Week 8 from Tuesday, June 19 to Friday, 22 June with Monday being a SWOTVAC day. All Year 11 students were issued with a letter and tear-off slip to take home and have signed by their parents. Please ensure this is returned by Friday, 8 June. It is essential that students and their families are aware of the key points in the letter to ensure that students are able to meet the College protocols for sitting exams. Lastly, please be aware that Week 9 will see the change of Semester for students and, subsequently, there will be a student-free day on Monday, 25 June.

Mr Christopher ZammitYear 11 Coordinator Mrs Rebecca Footner, Year 12 Coordinator

We are at a mid-way point for the Senior Years: this can be a tricky time of time of the year, where the stresses of study and getting assignments done can start to build for students. But it can be helped with a little PMA- Positive Mental Attitude. Procrastinating, lack of motivation and a poor attitude, are not conducive to excelling. Making sure that we approach things with an open mind and try to schedule things, can make getting to the light at the end of the tunnel, a little bit easier. The Senior Years cohort celebrated a wonderful evening at the College Formal, held at the Krystal Function Centre in Week 4. Year 11 and Year 12 students came along for a night of ‘Great Gatsby’ where they dined, danced and photographed their way through the night. It was a great night where the students got to experience formal dining and etiquette, while having a fun time with their friends. A big thank you to the Formal Committee who were fantastic in organising the night, and to the wonderful staff at the Krystal Function Centre who helped ensure it was a memorable evening for all.

Reconciliation Week MassOn Thursday 31 May, during National Reconciliation Week, the Mount Carmel College community gathered to celebrate Mass, with Fr. Tony Densely presiding. We were joined by members of the Aboriginal community including families of our indigenous students and indigenous old scholars. Also present were representatives of the Sisters of St. Joseph; Veena Gollan and Ingrid O’Loughlin, aboriginal women who have recently worked with the Mount Carmel College students; various special guests from the local community; and students from several of the primary schools in the Catholic North Western Community: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary, St. Margaret Mary’s, Whitefriars, Dominican, and Our Lady Queen of Peace.

Drawing on the 2018 National Reconciliation Week theme, “Don’t keep history a mystery”, students from all the schools presented examples of how they are learning about aboriginal culture and history in their day to day lessons. In Science students learnt about how the Kaurna people used the Port River before European settlement and the relationship they had with the dolphins in order to discover sustainable ways to use God’s creation. The Geography students in Year 9 also looked at sustainability, focussing on biomes and ecosystems and ways in which Aboriginal people lived in harmony and balance with the natural environment. The Year 8 Art students created sculptures of Ibis birds after learning the Dreaming Story of Tjirbruki, an

ancestral being of the Kaurna people of the Adelaide plains. In PE, students are trying out traditional Aboriginal games and finding them similar to popular games played today. The Religious Education students in Year 10 learnt about Aboriginal Spirituality, exploring the importance of The Dreaming for Aboriginal people today and reflecting on what non-indigenous Australians can learn about ethics, community, and care for creation from Dreamtime stories. Novel studies in English classes provided a springboard for students to discuss the ways that culturally different communities learn to cooperate with each other, whilst the senior Drama and Creative Arts students learnt about the ongoing impacts of the Stolen Generation. Year 7 students wrote poems about indigenous ANZACs during the First World War. Aboriginal music, song, and dance were celebrated by the younger students during a visit by an indigenous didgeridoo player.

The guests commented on how deeply embedded into the curricula of the schools the teaching of and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture obviously is. In the Catholic North Western Community, history is most definitely not kept a mystery!

My name is Kajsa Jensen and I work as a Recruitment Officer at CMAX Clinical Research. Established in 1993, CMAX is one of Australia’s largest and most experienced clinical study centres. Our expert team is committed to supporting innovative medical research in partnership with our national and international clients. Centrally positioned in Adelaide, CMAX is located adjacent to The Royal Adelaide Hospital in South Australia’s innovative Bio-Med City precinct. CMAX is currently conducting a meningococcal vaccine clinical study. In this study, participants aged 18 to 50 will be vaccinated with an already approved meningococcal vaccine B or A, C, W and Y. Participants must not have been previously vaccinated with the meningococcal vaccination at any point in their life. As there was a period from 2003 to 2007 during which meningococcal vaccinations were offered to Australian school children, we are now targeting adults aged 32 to 50 as they are less likely to have been previously exposed to the vaccine. We feel that this study may be of particular interest to parents of primary school-age children, and are seeking assistance to provide information about the study to this target group.

The purpose of these vaccinations is to increase the antibody levels (substances the body produces in response to vaccinations that protect against disease) in serum. The study involves administration of one of the currently approved meningococcal vaccinations

The study involves up to 5 visits to the CMAX facility over a 6 to 9 month period. All participants will be reimbursed for their time and of course will be vaccinated with either the B or A, C, W and Y meningococcal vaccine. I would be grateful if you could consider whether there may be an appropriate way to inform the parents at your school about this study. Please let us know if you need any more information about the study.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any further information. Thank you in anticipation. Kind Regards, Kajsa JensenRecruitment Officer
