On September 24, during a regular board meeting, School District 100 Board of Education appointed Thomas Lawler to fill a vacancy through April 2013. The position became available after School Board President Mimi Anderson submitted her letter of resignation in August. “Mimi was an extremely valuable member of the District 100 Board of Education and she will be missed,” commented Dr. Kathie Pierce, superintendent for Fenton Community High School District 100. “It was a very difficult decision to leave as I have always enjoyed the privilege of serving the students and families of the Fenton community and working with fellow board members,” said Anderson. “I believe this is the best time to step down due to my family and personal
commitments.” Mimi was appointed to the District 100 Board of Education in 2003, elected in 2005, and reelected in 2009. In addition to serving as board president, Mimi was vice president for four years and had achieved Master Board Member status from the Illinois Association of School Boards. On the county level, Mimi served as vice president of the DuPage Division of the Illinois Association of School Boards. New board member, Thomas Lawler has been a resident of Wood Dale for six years and has served on multiple school advisory boards. He currently is a board member of the Illinois Department of Professional and Financial Regulations. As per District 100 School Board policy, the board vice president, David Shimanek, has assumed the role of president until April, 2013. During the meeting, board member Mary Rivera was appointed vice president.
District 100 School Board Members Receive RecognitionFenton High School would like to congratulate the following School District 100 Board of Education members for achieving an award from the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) Master Board Member Program. Mary Rivera, David Vogel and Laura Wassinger were recognized for credits earned after the completion of school board related workshops and conferences. School board member, Dorothy Lange was recognized for achieving a Master Board Member rating. Past school board President Mimi Anderson and board Secretary David Sbertoli were also recognized for maintaining Master Board Member rating. The recipients will be recognized at the DuPage Division dinner.

iPads, expanded internet enhance learning
As part of the Board of Education’s goal of providing facilities that support 21st Century Learning, District 2 has invested in technology that expands the
use of computers and mobile technology in all schools.
In Ms. Walsh’s 4th grade class, it’s easy to see how powerful and versatile the iPad is as a learning tool.
For math lessons, students break into small groups. While one group works with Ms. Walsh on a new concept, another group uses iPads, building their math skills by racing to solve math problems correctly in a math game.
During reading time, some students find a quiet corner in the hallway or commons area to record themselves reading aloud, recording it on an iPad. They replay it to hear if they have made any mistakes.
During a writing lesson, the students break into groups to identify the theme and three main ideas from a reading passage. With the touch of a finger, Ms. Walsh can project one of the group’s iPads on the classroom screen for the class to review together.
“The iPads allow the students to learn in ways that they have not been able to do before,” said Ms. Amy Walsh.
“Our goal is to continually work toward blurring the line between curriculum and technology until it becomes so engrained, it’s just a natural part of learning and teaching.” said Missy Baglarz, instructional technology director.
New technology purchases include:
• Three new computers in each classroom;
• 60 new computers in innovation and computer labs;
• New internet network equipment to increase connectivity, speed and video capacity in every school;
• New laptops for each elementary teacher to use with new projectors in every classroom;
• iPads for student use at all grade levels.
• Apple TV for every classroom in the new elementary schools, allowing students to share work
Students collaborate on a writing assignment using an iPad. They will later share their work by projecting it on a screen.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year!The holidays are supposed to be a time filled with great joy and of course children’s laughter. But as we know, many families are hurting these days and some are struggling to pay bills and put food on the table, much less put something under the tree.
We think every child deserves some holiday wonder. Last year our Toy & Food drive distributed toys, books and stockings to over 500 children. This year we want to exceed that number, but we need your help.
Our Toy & Food Drive and the Rotary sponsored Coat Drive will begin November 1. This year we need to be more generous than ever before. Every child will receive new toys, a stuffed stocking and new books.
Suggested donations include new, unwrapped toys and children’s books, non-perishable food items, gift cards and new hats, scarves and gloves. New and gently used coats are also accepted. Your cash contributions are also much needed and welcome.
Collection Boxes are located throughout the Village including Village Hall, the Edge Ice Arena, Blackhawk Middle School, Bensenville Theatre, and the Bensenville Library.
For complete information, to get a collection box or to make a donation, phone Village Hall at 630-594-1010 or email [email protected].
Every child deserves Happy Holidays- YOU can make it happen!

Don’t miss our annual chili cook-off between Fire Departments around the region. The first 600 guests will receive a keepsake ornament. The Tree Lighting Ceremony with Santa and special guests will be held at 6 p.m.
Senior Citizen Club Holiday PartyBensenville residents aged 55 and over are invited to enjoy a meal and a live performance from Mo Beat Blues. An upbeat blend of Blues, Jazz, R&B, Country, Swing, and the Rat Pack. The special holiday party will take place on Sunday, December 2 at 1 p.m. at Monty’s Banquet Hall, doors open at noon.
