Berlin Alexanderplatz ’Frei für beweging, frei für stille’ - Free for movement, free for silence

HOSPER has been awarded an honourable mention for the new design of the Alexan-derplatz in Berlin. The contest consisted of an open preliminary round to which, 30 (international) offices were invited. Of the around 200 total number of competing participants. HOSPER is the only foreign bureau that was awarded a prize.

For forty years the Alexanderplatz was the city centre of East-Berlin. The urban deve-lopment design of the Berlin architect Kollhoff has had a major influence on the size and the experience of the existing open space of the Alexanderplatz. The surface area of the square will be lessened into an enclosed square of 3 ha. and will be used more intensively due to added functions. Such a place that is of importance to the entire city may serve as a melting pot.

’Freedom for movement’ and ’a place to stay’The essence of the design of the square is a free surface area with one architectural element that encompasses several functions and possibilities for a stay. The plan proposes a flat, neutral floor, free of obstacles. This way, the square offers space for events. A number of world-famous square elements will remain.

The stand The second design intervention consists of a stand in the form of a sculpture that changes in height with sloping elements, which creates a square you want to stay on, oriented towards the south, and of a human size. From the stand the use of the square can be observed. The sloping elements of the stand consist of wooden, concrete, metal, and glass parts. Facili-ties such as subway entrances and kiosks are connected to the stand. concept
