COLD WEATHER GUIDELINES

At Our School

When The Cold Weather Comes………… Dressing for the Weather Parents please help us ensure your child is warm when he/she goes out for recess and lunch breaks. The fresh air and time to exercise are important even during winter months.

COLD WEATHER GUIDELINES FOR SCHOOL

This winter, school divisions in metro Winnipeg will be using the temperature at The Forks as the indicator of severe weather. The general rule is that if the wind chill is -45 C or colder at The Forks (as posted by Environment Canada at about 6:10 a.m.), all Winnipeg school divisions cancel buses for the whole day but schools usually remain open. If buses are cancelled, an alert will be posted on the RETSD division website www.retsd.mb.ca home page. Major radio stations and local television will also announce busing cancellations.

The decision to keep students indoors at recess is at the discretion of the principal when the wind chill is -27 C or colder

Patrol News

Extreme Cold Weather Guidelines (from Cold Weather Guidelines for Schools—Environment Canada)

The following cold weather guidelines should be communicated to patrols and to the parents/guardians of

patrols. During extremely cold weather, the following guidelines for an abbreviated student patrol

schedule will be followed:

-27 °C to -34 °C It is recommended that time on post not exceed 10 minutes. Warm clothing is essential. Facial protection

is recommended.

-35 °C to -40 °C It is recommended that time on post not exceed five minutes. Posts located more than a five-minute

walk from the school will not be patrolled. Warm clothing and facial protection is essential.

Below -40 °C No student patrols on post. The school will notify the students and parents of this abbreviated patrol

schedule.

How to Dress

• Scarves, hat, mitts, snowsuit, boots, etc. • Do not restrict the vision of the patrol.

Snow banks

• Restrict motorist’s vision. - Stand behind the snow bank. - Cross the children when it is clear or when

all motorists have come to a complete stop.

In winter, stand one metre back from the curb instead of one footstep. If a vehicle loses control,

it gives the patrol that extra safety factor. This should place the patrol behind a light or hydro pole.

Toonies for Toy Mountain

The students and staff at Bernie Wolfe School have decided to support Toy

Mountain this holiday season. We are asking students and staff to bring in a

toonie between November 27 and December 8. The money we collect will go

towards buying new toys for children in need. There will also be a silver collection

at the Winter Concert and that money will go towards this charity as well.

If everyone participated in this effort, we could bring in more than $1000 to

support this worthwhile cause. We thank you in advance for your generosity and

hope you have a wonderful holiday season filled with good will and happiness!!

GRADE 8 GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

The Grade 8 Girls have just wrapped up their final volleyball season at Bernie Wolfe School. This year our team was made up of 4 setters (Tammy, Betty, Brooklyn and Nicole) 4 middle hitters (Ephone, Paige, Sarayah and Stephanie) and 5 power hitters (Faith, Taylor, Emily, Gedil and Jayden). These girls have shown commitment, positive attitudes and hard work over the last twelve weeks of practices and games. The team has played in all 5 divisional mini-tournaments, the Fall Smash at BWCS and a weekend tournament at East Selkirk Middle School. All thirteen girls have worked hard and shown improvement in their passing, hitting and serving

throughout the season. A big thank you to my assistant coaches, Mrs. Fazenda and former student Jocelyn Kotlarchuk for all of your help! It was a pleasure to work with such a wonderful group of athletes and coaches this year. Congratulations on a great season! – Ms. Cassels

Grade 8 Girls Volleyball Coaches GRADE 7 GIRLS VOLLEYBALL The grade 7 girls volleyball team had a great season! We started off with a rough start, but continued to grow as a team, and develop our skills as the season continued. The girls played Triple Ball this year, but were really challenged at the BWCS Fall Smash tournament where there was no Triple Ball. They overcame this challenge, and came out on top! Their ability to serve consistently and use learned strategies helped with their success on the court. Mr. Bugera has really appreciated seeing this team develop their skills, as well as their sportsmanship. Congratulations on a fantastic season. Mr. Bugera Grade 7 Girls Volleyball Coaches

Grade 8 Boys Volleyball Team The grade 8 boys volleyball team had an outstanding volleyball season this year! There were countless highlights from big hits to great dives and all around great plays, but the most memorable ones were the highlights of teamwork, sportsmanship and growth displayed from game to game and in our home tournament. As coaches, we coached and watched with pride as these gentlemen grew not only in their individual athletic abilities but in their personal growth in character as well. As the season progressed, we watched the bar rise a little more each week both individually and as a collective team. Their growth was showcased in their 2nd place finish in our home tournament (3 points from winning it all) where our team raised

their compete level and grew as a team and that is all a coach can ask for. Personally, I would like to thank my two assistant coaches Mrs. D and Mrs. McDuff as well as my high school helper Natan, And a special thanks to my players especially my team captains for their leadership, commitment and dedication to the team, a special thank you goes out to the parents and fans for their dedication and enthusiasm. I would like to congratulate the following students for displaying the values of Bernie Wolfe Community School at both home and away games throughout the season: setters; Joshua and Quaid, right sides; Chap, Jimmy and David, middles; Michael, Cole, Asil and Maksym, and powers; Malakai, Carl, Symone and Lee. It was a great season and I think I will miss the practices most of all. Good luck in your future sports endeavors. Way to go gentlemen you were a pleasure to coach! Mr. Struch Coach

Grade 7 Boys Volleyball Team The grade 7 boys volleyball team was very successful this year. This was the second year that the Grade 7s played Triple Ball, and it was a lot of fun. The year started with us not being able to properly bump a ball, and the boys can now regularly use 3 hits and spike it! We participated in all of the mini-tournaments, our home tournament and our tournament at Murdoch McKay. Mr. Hunter thoroughly enjoyed watching the boys grow during the course of the season. Congratulations on a great year!!

Mr. Hunter

On a very crisp and sunny Thursday in November the Ukrainian classes went to Oak Hammock Marsh for an exciting all day field trip. We extended our classroom language learning about seasonal changes in Manitoba. The students have been learning words and phrases about the seasonal changes in Ukrainian. Through an Aboriginal perspective, we also learned more about the migratory path of the Canadian geese. We explored the Medicine Wheel and its representation of the four seasons. The students spent most of the day outdoors playing animal games and searching for critters and birds who have not yet made the trip south.

Library News

Happy Holidays from the library! Many new books have been purchased

and are now available for students to enjoy.

Our Book fair will take place from December 14th-15th. Students are able to purchase books

during their classes scheduled preview time or during the Family Event times.

Our Holiday books will soon be on display. We have an assortment of classic stories as well as

new original titles. We hope you have some time to curl up with your families and enjoy a good

holiday book! Have a peaceful and joyous break!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mrs. Buchanan has had an amazing start to the year working with classes on their IBL units!

The Grade 2 students in Mrs. Kochan, Mr. Smith and Mrs. Penner’s classes have been busy

researching an animal of their choice through a variety of resources, including the internet,

videos and books. They are now going to use that research to do some non-fiction writing about

their animals. You wouldn't believe some of the amazing facts they learned about their animals!

Mrs. Cassel’s Grade 3 class has used the book, “The Best Part of Me” compiled by Wendy Ewald,

as inspiration to create their own writing pieces about each of their favourite body parts. Each

student also had the opportunity to use the digital cameras to take pictures of each other to go

along with their writing. We are all so excited to see the finished products!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mrs. Ziemianski is having fun working on Problem Solving and STEM (Science, Technology,

Engineering & Math) initiatives with Mr.Kozaczka’s grade 4 class and Mrs. Hryciw’s grade 4/5

class.

Mr. Bugera’s students and Mrs.Ziemianski have been listening to and analyzing picture books and

are now in the process of writing their own. We are very excited to read them!

Miss Brolly’s class has been learning about being kind and “Filling each other’s buckets”. We will

be writing letters to thank those who help fill others buckets here at Bernie Wolfe Community

School! They are looking forward to surprising many recipients.

Ms.Baluk’s class has been learning about biographies. Reading and viewing many biographies has

helped establish criteria, to write their own on a person of their choice. They will be wonderful!

What a great beginning of the year! We look forward to working with all classes this year!

We sure have been busy this year in the family room! Our FREE Stay & Play program will run Thursday mornings from 9-11am until December 7th and start up again after the winter break on January 18th. Many families have come to this drop in program and the children enjoy free play, play-doh, crafts, books, a snack and circle time. We see Mom’s, Dad’s, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles and other caregivers come to the family room with babies up to kindergarteners. This is a great way to meet other members of your community and have fun playing with your preschool aged child. We also offered Growing Up Green in the fall which was an outdoor preschool program where we explored nature in our outdoor classroom as well as 1, 2, Buckle My Shoe which is an early numeracy programs for preschoolers. Registration for the winter Kinderlinks sessions will be on Saturday December 2nd. In the winter, we are offering two programs besides the Stay & Play program for 3-5 year olds. Animal Crackers will be on Tuesday mornings from 9:15-11 am and preschoolers will learn about a different animal each week through books, songs and activities. We will also enjoy a snack and some free play with toys. On Friday mornings from 9-10:30 am we will be offering Whale Tales which is a program where we will learn about animals who live in the sea. There will be books, crafts, songs, games and snack too! If you would like to be on the Kinderlinks mailing list please email [email protected] or you can pick up a paper copy in the family room as well. If you have any questions regarding these FREE programs please email me at [email protected] or I can be reached by calling the school office as well. Allison Cole Community Connector

PAC News

Hello! The Parent Advisory Council (PAC) started the year off with a big splash! We were so excited to see the water bottle filling station was installed over summer near the gym. PAC could not have done this without the help of all of you participating in the monthly pizza lunches as well as to the local businesses that support us. Costco, Giant Tiger and Safeway have all contributed donations that reduce our costs and make it easier for us to get projects done at the school. PAC also ran the fall Peak of the Market fundraiser. This was a great success. Not only did we raise over $1100 but we also donated lots of veggies to the Plessis Robson Resource Centre. Thank you to everyone who participated. PAC is working towards raising enough money to do some improvements on the playground. We have a long way to go but with your continued support we will get there. In addition to raising funds for the playground, we are also donating funds from pizza and hot dog lunches to support other school groups. This includes the Indoor Track and Field team, Grade 6 camp with more to come later in the year. In December PAC is organizing our annual staff appreciation lunch for all of the great team that work at BWCS. We are also responsible for the 50/50 draw at the Winter Concert. This raised just over $250. The anonymous afternoon concert winner who donated their portion back to PAC graciously increasing our profits. Thank you so much! Stop by and say hello to a friendly PAC member who will be offering coffee and cookies at the student leds in the front entrance. As the Parent Council’s goal is to continue to increase and strengthen the communication between school, home and the community, feel free to stop by our next meeting. They are held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month (with the exception of December) at 6 PM in the BWCS parent room. Feel free to drop-in and join our next meeting on January 9, 2018. On behalf of PAC have a safe & happy holiday season!

TPUE

Our student count in the Ukrainian program is up to 34. Welcome to all the new families. Our school year has started off strong with our Ukrainian teachers encouraging home reading, spelling and alphabet learning for all grades. TPUE just finished our first fundraiser with hand made perogies and JD Hoggs sausage. Thanks to all the parents that helped out with this fundraiser. The profit from the fundraiser will help to pay for various things needed for the Ukrainian program including the upkeep of the costumes used in all our performances. On December 4th our students had a wonderful time singing and dancing at the Christmas concert. December 14th and 15th will be student led conferences where we will be able to see the great work our children have been doing in the both their English and Ukrainian classes. We finish up our year with our St. Nicholas Luncheon on Wednesday December 20th. We will be serving perogies and kielbasa to our Ukrainian students and families. This will be followed by a visit by St. Nicholas and some caroling in the theatre. We hope to see many of our Ukrainian students and their families there. When we start back in the new year we will be busy getting ready for Kolyada that will be held at Bernie Wolfe Community School on January 25, 2018. More details will be sent home in the New Year. Have a safe and happy holiday. See you all in 2018! If you have a concern…

Your child’s school will always try to make the learning experience a positive, safe and happy one for its students. However, if you have a concern or an issue, please don’t hesitate to let the school know. Open communication between home and school is very important.

The RETSD Board of Trustees stresses the steps shown below must be followed if concerns are to be properly addressed. The trustees’ role is to hear all sides of the concern before making a decision on any appeal, to be the link between parents and the division, and to help with divisional processes and policies (such as this concern protocol). They realize that there is no greater advocate for your child than you, the parent.

Here are the steps to follow if you have a concern:

1. Talk to the person most directly involved—your child’s teacher. If you must leave a message, please be sure

to provide a day and evening phone number where you can be reached.

2. If talking to the teacher doesn’t resolve the issue, talk to the principal.

(The majority of parental concerns are resolved at either of the first two steps)

3. If you’ve talked to the principal and, over a period of time, the issue still has not been resolved, call the

superintendents department.

4. If your concern is not resolved by the superintendents department, you can make an appeal in writing to the

board of trustees.

5. The board of trustees will hear your appeal either in person or in writing, whichever you prefer.
