D.O.Ca Rioja – soil and climate

• Wide variety of soils, predominantly calcareous, ferreous clay and alluvial

• Rioja soils are ideal for quality viticulture, as they are well balanced in structure (sand, limestone and clay), slighlty alkaline, low in organic matter and with moderate supply of water during the summer

• Sheltered to the North by the Sierra de Cantabria and to the South by the Sierra de la Demanda, the area has both Atlantic and Mediterranean influences

• Average annual rainfall 450mm

• Average annual sunshine 2,800 hours

Page 6: Beronia

D.O.Ca Rioja – soil and climate

• Rioja Alta

– Atlantic climate, good pluviometry levels and difference of temperature between day and night allows a slow maturation of the grape. Protected from the wind by the Sierra Cantabria

– Calcareous clay soils , some ferruginous clay and alluvial soils

• Rioja Alavesa

– Atlantic climate with more sun exposure

– Calcareous clay soils, in terraces and small parcels

• Rioja Baja

– Climate is drier and warmer, due to its

Mediterranean influence which makes

more alcoholic wines

– Soil is predominantly alluvial and

ferruginous –clay

D.O.Ca Rioja - viticulture

• Maximum crops allowed are 6.500 kg/hectare for reds and 9.000 kg/hectare for whites. Equivalents: 47 hl/Hectare for reds and 62 hl/hectare for whites

• Yield 72%

• 7 varietals allowed, 4 reds and 3 whites

– Tempranillo: counts for over 70% of the vineyards planted in the D.O.

alcohol, colour and acidity

– Garnacha: the most planted Spanish variety in the world. Produces

wines with good extracts and good alcoholic strength. In cool climates

makes an excellent rosé

– Mazuelo: represents 3% of the total vineyards planted in the D.O. Even

though it isn’t specially aromatic it produces good tanic wines, with good

acidity and colour. Mazuelo perfectly compliments Tempranillo in aged wines

Beronia wines

• 95% of production is reds

• Beronia elaborates two different ranges of wine: a classic line and a modern line

• A classic line including Viura, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva

• A modern single variety line including Barrel Fermented Viura, Special Production Tempranillo, Mazuelo Reserva and Graciano.

• In this way Beronia is able to meet the needs of different consumers, those who prefer traditional Rioja style wines and those who are looking for something new and innovative.

Page 20: Beronia

Beronia wines – Classic line

• Tempranillo is the base for all the traditional wines (represents 85% of total surface planted) and clearly identifies the wine as Rioja. The wines are always a blend, the other varieties contributing different characteristics to the wines:

– Garnacha is used for Crianzas and gives fruit and colour

– Graciano and Mazuelo are used for Reservas and Gran Reservas, as their higher acidity prevents oxidation therefore helps ageing

• Gran Reserva, made from old vines and only in those years when

vintage is qualified as very good or excellent. These grapes are manual

harvested and hand selected to ensure the highest quality.

• This range can be described as “modern classic”: wines have more

colour and aromas than what is known as “classic rioja” thanks in part

to the use of new wood (average age of 4 years) and to the use of

mixed barrels

Page 21: Beronia

Beronia wines – Modern line

To satisfy its innovative and creative vocation, Beronia also produces a modern line of wines, all monovarietal and unique in their style:

– White barrel fermented viura

– Tempranillo special production

– Mazuelo reserva (the only Rioja cellar with this product)

– 100% Graciano

The range is completed by III aC, an Icon wine produced

with grapes coming from old vines, with very concentrated flavours
