From the Principal’s Desk Dear Parents and Members of the Community,
Welcome Back A very warm welcome back to term 2 and I hope that everyone had a restful and fun holiday and got to spend some quality time with your families. A special welcome our new students and their families as they join our community this week. We all hope you get to settle into Bert Oldfield School soon and enjoy the many positive elements of our community and educational programs. I am looking very much forward to the many activities and educational programs ahead of us this term and I know that every student will be ready to learn. Saying “Goodbye” in the morning My thanks to all parents who are supporting us with our new morning farewell procedures. It is important that our students, particularly our younger students, start to develop their independence. We are endeavouring to get to class earlier each day so that learning in the classroom can commence as soon as possible. SCHOOL STRATEGIC DIRECTIONS. We are now in the final year of our 2015 - 2017 strategic plan and endeavouring to accomplish the final iterations of our 3 strategic directions. These directions, which we have been working with over the last 2 years, guide the focus of our learning and development of our students. I have included the 3 directions below for your information, but to also potentially spark your ideas as we start to develop the 2018- 2012 strategic plan. We will be seeking your input at key points across the year so that the new plan is ready by the commencement of 2018. Strategic Direction 1: 21st Century Learning: To provide quality teaching practices and curriculum delivery to create assessment capable, creative, collaborative, critical and reflective thinkers, prepared to meet the rigours of 21st Century society. Strategic Direction 2: Quality Systems and Practices: To build quality systems and organisational practices to ensure that outcomes for all stakeholders are maximised and effectively monitored. Strategic Direction 3: An Engaged Learning Community: To maximise and enhance the involvement of all stakeholders to build an engaged school community.
In each of these strategic areas, your input is very much valued. I will
endeavour to keep you informed each newsletter about different activities
and developments for our school in each strategic direction.

STAFF CAR PARK A gentle reminder that parents and students are not to walk through, or park, in the staff car park area—this is a WH&S safety rule. We need to keep our children safe at all times so please enter an exit through the entry gate near the school sign when arriving at school, or the gates on Wall Park and Orana Avenue.
2018 ENROLMENTS We are now taking Kindergarten enrolments for 2018. If you have a child you wish to enrol at school next year, please collect an enrolment form from the Office. If you know of any neighbours or friends in this area who have children ready to start school next year, or who would like to come to Bert Oldfield Public School, please ask them to collect an enrolment form. It is important that we have names of children as early as possible to help us with staffing and school organisation. All children that are turning 5 by the 31st July are eligible to enrol for Kindergarten in 2018. Please do not hesitate to contact Mr Perrott to discuss your child’s enrolment.
NATIONAL WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY Friday, 19th May is National Walk Safely to School Day. Students are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. As a community, it is important that we teach our students safe pedestrian behaviour when crossing roads. Some positive pedestrian behaviours include:
Children up to the age of 10 are required to hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road.
We cross at designated Pedestrian Crossing or traffic light crossings.
It is important that we teach children to look both ways before crossing the street and to listen carefully for any oncoming cars.
Remember not to chase balls and other toys onto the road. Through teaching these skills to our students, it will help ensure that they become mature pedestrians. Above all, the safety of our students is paramount. Happy Walking!
VOLUNTARY SCHOOL FEE CONTRIBUTIONS Thank you again to all those who have made this important contribution payment. The fees are an important part of our finances providing much needed assistance with the purchase of classroom requisites, sporting equipment, library resources, art and craft supplies, computer technology, paper usage and reading resources and various items for the children. It should be noted that our fees are a once only for the year, unlike other systems, which collect payments every term amounting to large sums of money per child. Please support our great school. Our fees equate to only $2.00 per week but have significant impact beyond that. If every family paid this school fee, we would have an additional $18,000.00 to spend on educational resources. To enable us to fully utilise your contribution, please make your payment as soon as possible, if you have not already done so.
GYMNSATICS PROGRAM Our gym program for all students K-6 starts again next week. The “Fit Futures” program develops students’ basic gymnastic skills, including balance and flight, all of which support the PDHPE syllabus. The program is partially funded by a Federal Government grant, “Sporting School’s Australia.”
For those of you that have payed your school contribution, this is one of
the programs included in that commitment. Your payment of the
contribution will assist us in covering the cost of this program to the
school and ensuring that we are able to offer extra curricula programs
delivered by specialist staff on an ongoing basis. The 10-week program
would normally cost over $40.00 per student, but we are asking for a
fraction of that. We would again appreciate your support by paying the
school contribution as soon as possible.
MOTHER’S DAY STALL
My thanks again to our very small but dedicated P and C members
who were involved in the organisation of the Mother’s Day stall. I
know the students of this school greatly appreciate all the work the
P and C does and the students are always delighted to have the
opportunity to purchase a gift for their mums for their special day.
The P and C will be running a Mother’s Day stall next Thursday. All
students will have the opportunity to visit the stall and purchase a
gift for mum. There will be a range of gifts available ranging from
$2.00 and above. I hope all our mums have a lovely relaxing
Sunday next week.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM THE CANTEEN
COMMITTEE
Due to the ongoing work to our school canteen, unfortunately it
won’t be open for business for at least another week.
Please remember to send your children’s lunch and recess with
them until further notice.
School Zone Road Safety Our sincere thanks to all of our parents and carers that do the correct thing every morning and afternoon when dropping off their children at school or collecting their children from school. The safety of our students is paramount. Unfortunately, some parents and carers choose to ignore common safety guidelines and are placing their children's safety at risk. And not to mention the potential cost to your wallet and bank account for directly breeching safety regulations and road rules. Attached to the end of this newsletter is a guide from Blacktown Council related to road safety and the corresponding fines for any breeches of the road safety guidelines and rules. Please take some time to familiarise yourself with the rules and consequences that are related to any
infringement.
Please help us to keep our kids safe before and after school by observing
and respecting all road safety rules and expectations.

The Cross Country was held on Thursday 4th May in our own school grounds. A huge congratulations goes out to every child who competed for their house! It was a magnificent morning and it was just fabulous to see all the girls and boys in their house colours cheering for their friends. My thanks goes out to the school community for their sup-port of this event and to those extra special parent helpers who ensured our carnival ran smoothly without incident! Congratulations to the following children who placed 1st to 5th in their age races and are now continuing to the Zone Cross Country Carnival. Mrs Sigg

VOLUNTEERS
We are still looking for volunteers to help out in the canteen. If you can spare a few hours or the whole day, weekly or fortnightly, that will help us immensely. It would be a treat for any students to see their grandparents who have also volunteered to help in the canteen. Please see Shelley on Tuesday mornings or Janel, the P&C President, on Fridays in the canteen. P&C Committee

MAKING AN ONLINE PAYMENT Did you know that you can make an online payment for most school transactions? Just go to the school website at www.bertoldfie-p.school.nsw.edu.au and click the $Make a Payment tab. It’s that simple.
MONEY SENT TO SCHOOL
When sending money to school we ask that you send it in an envelope with your child’s name, class and what the money is for. We are experiencing too many students bringing money into the office or handing it to their class teachers without envelopes which is leading to misplaced money. We request that you purchase a pack of envelopes, especially for school. Thank you.

LOST PROPERTY
The number of lost property items is increasing. Currently there
are 3 tubs located in the Wet Weather Shed that contain school
hats, jumpers, jackets and tracksuit pants; a variety of mufti
items (jackets and hats), umbrellas and lunch containers. Some
of these items have been labelled but it is difficult to read the
name as labels have become worn or writing has faded.
Parents and students are encouraged to search the tubs when
attempting to locate lost property.
All items that were clearly labelled have been returned to their
owners. To help make this task easier, please ensure that you:
Clearly label all uniform items (hats, shirts, pants, jackets, jumpers), drink bottles, lunch containers
and anything else your child brings to school.
Check from time to time that names and classes are still clear and easily read.
Encourage your child to be responsible for their belongings and to check the lost property tubs for
any items they may have lost.
