tomotive technicians."We've kind of evolved into

other things as the years goby," Weick said.

They now do work with tiresand alignment, chassis work,tune-ups and basic oilchanges, among other things.

Before Weick opened thebusiness he graduated fromNorth Dakota State College ofScience's auto program andworked at a farm equipmentdealership.

"After I was in the field for awhile for someone, I was readyto be self-employed if the op-portunity came," he said.

All of his current auto tech-nicians went through the ND-SCS auto program.

"There's a lot of stuff youjust learn by doing, too," We-ick said.

He explained that manytimes he'll fix one car, and thena few months later he'll see acar with the same problem.

One thing Big John's doesthat many automotive busi-nesses don't, is radiator repair.

"That's a specialty that real-ly no one else does," Weicksaid.

Although that kind of work

is not often needed for carsanymore, Weick still does a lotof radiator repair on heavierequipment.

Weick particularly enjoysthe small-town attitude in thearea. He said that's whatmakes his work fun. That atti-tude also involves trust.

"We trust our customers justas much as they trust us," hesaid.

That trust has led to repeatcustomers that are keeping hisdoors open.

"The majority of our busi-ness is repeat customers andthe rest of our customers wererecommended by other peo-ple," he said.

Weick is proud that his shopand workers received the BestMechanics award.

"That's pretty gratifying," hesaid. It's a pretty good feelingwhen you get noticed for it. It'sa big thank you from all of us."

The shop is located at 209Fourth St. in Wahpeton. Thephone number is 701-642-5194.

Best Dentist credits her work teamJudith Schmidt said her team makes her clinic such a success

BY REGAN WHITNEY • DAILY NEWS [email protected]

When Judith Schmidt heardshe was voted Best Dentist inthe Valley this year, she imme-diately attributed the successto the team at The Clinic forOral Health in Wahpeton.

"It isn't just what I do. It'swhat our whole team does," shesaid.

The team starts their workday with a huddle to make surethat everything is organizedand arranged for the day.Schmidt said they have a posi-tive workplace environment.

Julie Russell, patient care co-ordinator, said she wanted towork at the clinic from the mo-ment she walked in the door.

"I came to work here becauseI was a patient here," she said.

Schmidt said she never looksat someone as "the next personin the chair." She also said that

even though her patient sched-ule is usually booked, she al-ways makes time to see some-one having pain.

"She'll work through lunch. She'll stay late. She'll come ear-ly," Russell said.

The clinic's success can alsobe attributed to Schmidt's ex-pertise, not only in general den-tistry, but also in implants, ex-traction, and when necessary, sedation, with the help of anurse anesthetist who happensto be her husband.

"I really wanted to bring some-thing to Wahpeton that we didn'thave before," Schmidt said. "Pa-tients don't have to go to Fargo."

Schmidt gained theses skillsby completing a one-year oralsurgery internship after shegraduated from the University
