Bethany Brief A publication for residents, staff & friends of Bethany Home & Bethany Meadows Spring / Summer 2013
We have had a year
like no other imagina-
ble. Change occurred
in the accounting and
nursing programs, up-
dating to electronic
records. The payroll
system, phone sys-
tems, employee bene-
fits programs, and
401K providers also experienced
change. Main Street and all-new Betha-
ny Home Brandon opened August
2012. Residents, staff and members of
the community are taking full ad-
vantage of all the new amenities. The
swimming pool, Grandma’s Deli, First
National Bank of Sioux Falls, general
store, and wellness areas are successful.
People love our new home: the large
rooms, private bathrooms and showers,
the spa tubs, living room fireplaces and
kitchens. It feels like home and not an
institution.
Bethany has recently been recog-
nized for achievement in more than one
way. First, our building project re-
ceived national recognition and was
awarded USDA/Rural Development’s
“Certificate of Achievement”. Bethany
was also honored by the Brandon Val-
ley Area Chamber of Commerce as the
“Business of the Year” for 2012. God
has abundantly blessed our ministry
and our mission. Through the change,
our Bethany management team, super-
visors, and employees’ “can do” atti-
tude encouraged everyone to worked
tirelessly to assure residents were cared
for. They deserve our deepest thanks
and appreciation.
Now that our new “Main Street” and
Nursing Home are open, we are adjust-
ing to new surroundings and finding
new ways offer new services, and bet-
ter meet the needs of those we serve.
Bethany Home Sioux Falls (BHSF) is
converting rooms for private occupan-
cy. There are now 16 assisted living
apartments; with this addition, BHSF
can serve the full continuum of care.
Renovations are nearly complete on our
last Bethany House; now, Bethany
owns 11 homes serving independent
seniors in Sioux Falls. Bethany Home
Brandon can serve two assisted living
residents, allowing spouses of skilled
residents to stay with their loved ones
or residents that have improved from
skilled rehab to be able to stay in our
new home.
At Bethany Meadows, construction
has begun on our 40th Garden Home
unit. More than 160 “Wellness Mem-
bers” are taking part daily in water aer-
obics and wellness exercise with state-
of-the-art exercise equipment and clas-
ses. A certified message therapist pro-
vides services to residents, families,
staff, and the community. Our new
general store, staffed by resident volun-
teers, offers the essentials as well as
candy, cards, flowers, clothing and
jewelry. Visitors, residents and staff
regularly dine and snack at “Grandma’s
Deli”, where there’s something differ-
ent to eat each day (soup, sandwiches
and “raspberry chocolate chunk” ice
cream are favorites). First National
Bank is open for our residents and staff
and business is growing. Today Betha-
ny cares for 260 residents and Bethany
employs more than 280 caregivers.
As you can tell, we are very busy.
With all of our change, all of our
growth, and all of our new services,
one thing holds true. Our residents al-
ways come first. We are here because
we serve them. God has given us a
ministry of taking care of people and
we do that every day, “Caring for the
Body and the Spirit”.

Bethany
Home Sioux
Falls is now
licensed for
assisted living
care and ser-
vices! By add-
ing assisted
living to our
scope of ser-
vices, we are
able to pro-
vide the full
continuum of care at Bethany Home
Sioux Falls. This includes independent
living through our Bethany Houses,
assisted living care, and short and long
-term skilled nursing care and/or rehab
services. We are pleased to be able to
provide this continuum for our resi-
dents as it gives them, and their fami-
lies, peace of mind through knowing
that Bethany can meet any care need at
any time.
Assisted living comprises one of the
four resident neighborhoods housed
within Bethany Home Sioux Falls. The
other neighborhoods fall under the um-
brella of nursing home care with one
neighborhood specializing in long-
term care, another in memory care, and
the other in short-term skilled nursing
and rehab care and services. Each of
our four neighbor-
hoods has its own
experienced RN man-
ager serving as the
“Neighborhood Lead-
er”. Their job is to
ensure that resident
care is delivered ac-
cording to the highest
standards while up-
holding our commit-
ment to quality of life.
The Neighborhood
Leader is also respon-
sible for ensuring
staff satisfaction by
providing ongoing
training, coaching,
scheduling consistency, and praise in
order to build employee confidence in
their work performance and their com-
mitment to our residents.
Since implementing the Neighbor-
hood Leaders along with other process
improvements, we have seen fantastic
outcomes in satisfaction rates and
quality indicators. The proof is in the
numbers, including our resident fall
rate lowering to 3% and pressure ulcer
rates decreasing to 2%. Low rates like
these mean that our employees are do-
ing a phenomenal job with their care
giving, preventative interventions, and
overall attentiveness to our residents.
Quality of life at Bethany Home
Sioux Falls is not only measured by
clinical indicators but also by resident
satisfaction. We value our residents’
feedback and comments regarding
their level of satisfaction with the qual-
ity of life they feel they have at Betha-
ny. Overall, our residents tell us that
we are doing a “very good” job in
meeting their needs and wishes. We
have acted on our residents’ sugges-
tions and added a weekly pizza party
as well as incorporated some of their
favorite recipes into the menu; expand-
ed the activity schedule to include a
weekly casino night and Sunday mat-
inees; and created new dining spaces
for a more homelike dining experience.
Privacy is another key component
to enhancing the quality of life for our
residents at Bethany. Now that we
have split our campus, all of our resi-
dents have access to a private room. As
a result, our residents are enjoying the
additional space a private room offers
by bringing in home furnishings, set-
ting up work areas for hobbies, and/or
adding a dorm refrigerator for personal
snacks or entertaining. Our mainte-
nance employees are sprucing up the
rooms with newly textured ceilings,
fresh paint, and by updating light fix-
tures for a more homelike environ-
ment.
Great things are happening at Beth-
any thanks to the hard work and dedi-
cation of our wonderful staff! It is in-
spiring to see our residents and fami-
lies enjoying the benefits of the chang-
es that have been made so far. Our fu-
ture is bright and we look forward to
more exciting changes to come as we
make plans to remodel; continue to
implement processes for clinical im-
provements; and most importantly…
listen to our residents suggestions and
desires for the creation of a comforta-
ble home that meets their idea of qual-
ity of life.
BETHANY HOME SIOUX FALLS NOW OFFERS FULL CONTINUUM OF CARE
BY DEBORAH HERRBOLDT, ADMINISTRATOR AT BETHANY HOME SIOUX FALLS
One theme of this newsletter is
“change.” As a Bethany board mem-
ber, and now the president of the Beth-
any board, I have seen the organization
go through a lot of change in the past
few years. Some of those changes
have been easy, and many have been
hard, but the motivating force behind
them was always the same: how do we
improve to make things better for our
residents and their families.
By building a new nursing home in
Brandon, we made things better for our
Bethany Meadows residents who need
increased nursing care — now they
can stay on our campus and get that
care. That change will also allow us to
make all of our skilled nursing rooms
private in both Sioux Falls and Bran-
don, which we believe improves the
resident and family experience in
many ways.
With the big change of building and
opening a new nursing home came
many smaller changes. These changes
included switching to all electronic
medical records. This allows our staff
to chart on our residents any time,
wherever they are, so we are seeing
better medical records kept and that
leads to better care for our residents.
That change, however, required a lot
of training by our staff, but they have
really embraced the benefits of that
program.
Changing our nursing staffing pro-
gram to offer consistent staffing in our
neighborhoods allows our staff and
residents to get to know each other
better, too.
Those are just some of the changes
Bethany has been through in the past
year. There have been many others,
and if we have been doing our job then
most people probably haven’t seen or
noticed them. There are some things
we haven’t changed, like our commit-
ment to our spiritual program. Our
spiritual program inspires us and
guides us in all that we do.
Rest assured, Bethany will continue
to change and grow, but only if those
changes meet our goal of making
things better for our residents and their
families. Thank you for all your sup-
port of Bethany.
BETHANY CONTINUES TO GROW AND CHANGE
BY JIM VORTHERMS, BETHANY BOARD OF DIRECTORS PRESIDENT
Garden Home construction has been constant at Bethany
Meadows, with six new units occupied from August 2012 to
present. Current residency is 36 homes with 63 occupants.
Garden Homes are care-free, maintenance-free living in
independent twin homes on the Bethany Brandon campus.
Services include mowing, housekeeping, watering, fertiliz-
ing, snow removal, general maintenance, and more. Garden
Home living encourages an active lifestyle, peace of mind,
and safety.
Active Garden Home seniors take part in various activities
both on and off campus. More than half of Bethany residents
are members at the Bethany Wellness Center; many also dine
at the deli, volunteer, travel, and work. Anyone 55+ is eligi-
ble to take advantage of the opportunity to make a Garden
Home their home.
There’s still time to customize a new home on our quiet
campus; call us at 582-8622 for a private tour.

Operating a nursing home is a significant challenge. In
recent years Medicaid cutbacks have made it especially
challenging for businesses like Bethany who strive to serve
everyone no matter their financial condition. Bethany sup-
plements funding by relying on donations and fundraisers.
Below is a short overview on some of our most significant
fundraisers.
Bethany Golf Tournament
This event will be May 17th at the Brandon Golf Course.
Last year, all the funds raised at the golf tournament were
allocated to the new Bethany van, which is used daily to transport residents,
including to and from doctors’ offices and on activity trips. Our goal is that 30
teams or more join us this year for a morning of golf, fun and raising funds for
Bethany. If you’d like to be a sponsor or golfer, call me at (605) 261-8824.
Bethany Foundation Dinner
The 2012 Bethany Foundation Dinner was held in November and Bethany
raised more than $13,500, used in part for
things like Christmas decorations at the new
Bethany Home Brandon, and for two new flat
screen televisions at Bethany Home Sioux
Falls. Some funds were set aside for our en-
dowment fund and our capital campaign.
Shaping a Legacy Capital Campaign
The Shaping a Legacy capital campaign helps
support the growth and change at Bethany.
We invite anyone with a connection to Betha-
ny to make a contribution or pledge to help
expand facilities and serve residents even bet-
ter. Visit our website (www.foundationforbethany.org) for more information or
give us a call anytime. Even a small monthly pledge can help us grow.
Legacy Gifts
A legacy gift occurs when someone remembers Bethany in their will, trust or
estate plan. Even a small percentage to Bethany means a lot as we carry on our
legacy of caring for the body and the spirit. Bethany Meadows and Bethany
Home Brandon were built on land donated to Bethany. We recently made the
switch to electronic medical records at Bethany Home Sioux Falls using funds
from two estate gifts. Please prayerfully consider making Bethany a part of
your estate planning.
Targeted Donations
We also accept donations for specific facilities or projects. For example, the
family of one former resident wanted to help us remodel the spa room in one of
our neighborhoods at Bethany in Sioux Falls. We worked with them over a
two year period to use their funds to turn a small shower room into a beautiful
spa room that all the residents now love to use. We take donations for smaller
projects as well. Recently, one family donated money for a new, handmade
book cart in honor of their mother who was a librarian.

WELLNESS CENTER OFFERS FITNESS, FRIENDSHIP
BY SAMI PARKS, WELLNESS DIRECTOR
The Success of the Bethany Wellness
Center has been an effort composed of
the residents and staff at Bethany, as well
as the surrounding community ages 50+.
The Lord has helped us accomplish
something much greater than a wellness
center; relationships formed, which is
physically and mentally healthy. There is something for
everyone at the wellness center.
Pool & Whirlpool. The pool & whirlpool is the most rec-
ognized of the Bethany Wellness Center. It’s 36,000 gal-
lons of water is rarely calm during the facility’s open
hours. The warm 88-degree therapy pool has been a re-
warding relief from pain for many members. The pool
removes pressure from joints in order to lessen the con-
stant infliction of pain throughout exercise and walking in
the pool. The 4,000 gallon clear blue whirlpool is heated
at 99-degrees for a safe bathtub effect, but in this bathtub
you can socialize with friends!
Fitness Center. The fitness center is used daily by mem-
bers and therapy patients. Bethany supplies seven FitEx-
press resistance machines to ensure joints are safe
throughout exercise; also, three cardio machines keep the
heart pumping.
Land & Water
Aerobics. The
Bethany Well-
ness Center of-
fers a variety of
14 classes.
Some classes are
located in the
new community
room where we
use dumbbells,
resistance bands,
and balance bar
to keep everyone in optimal condition. A circuit is located
in the fitness center 2 times a week to help you learn how
to use the equipment. Then the water classes are aquacise,
water walking, and arthritis aquatics. All the water classes
are built to enhance your strength and keep your heart rate
up without you realizing it with sore muscles. “I have real-
ly enjoyed the aqua aerobics class I attend,” one member
stated in a recent survey, “Classes are a good workout, but
also they’re fun!”
▲ Residents, staff, and community members
all enjoy and benefit from exercising in the
therapy pool at Bethany Meadows.
It is safe to say that Bethany Home Brandon has had the
lion’s share of growth and change throughout the last 6
months, but Bethany Home Sioux Falls has been going
through its own changes as well. Starting in November of
2012, BHSF received their license to start accepting As-
sisted Living residents. As several of our long term resi-
dents made the decision to move to Brandon, it opened
opportunities in Sioux Falls to transition one entire neigh-
borhood to single person apartments for Assisted Living.
We started slowly by transitioning four of our current resi-
dents to Assisted Living level of care.
Once word got out to the community it spread like wild
fire. Bethany Home Sioux Falls now has 11 of its 16 beds
full, others scheduled to move in soon. We also have a
waiting list of 11 possible residents just waiting for rooms
to become available. Our maintenance department does an
outstanding job of “flipping” a room as soon as it becomes
available. They give the room a quick facelift by repaint-
ing, changing out light fixtures and taking down the divid-
er curtains in the middle of the room – transforming the
rooms into beautiful “suites” for our new residents.
Bethany’s recent growth has allowed us to add new staff leaders.

Bethany Home Brandon was blessed to admit its first resi-
dents, Milton and Elinor Steen, on August 13, 2012. They
have been loyal supporters and valued members of the Betha-
ny family for many years. Milton and Elinor have lived on
both Bethany campuses over the years, and we are thrilled to
have them at our newest facility now.
Bethany Home Brandon truly feels like home from the
moment you walk through the doors. The space is peaceful
yet productive, open yet cozy, and private yet inclusive. The
four specialized neighborhoods each have a great room where
residents can share home cooked meals, play games, watch
television, and relax by the fireplace. Each private resident
room has its own private bathroom with heated floors and
easily accessible showers. They can decorate their rooms to
suit them as well as heat or cool their space to meet their per-
sonal preferences. Bethany Home Brandon has the comforts
of home with the support of specialized staff to assist in car-
ing for the body and the spirit.
Of course with any new venture we have had some learn-
ing opportunities since our doors first opened, but we are hap-
py to report that all of our neighborhoods are successfully up
and running and many new friends now call Bethany Home
Brandon their home. As we near our capacity, we continue to
add future residents to our waiting list.

Bethany is in the process of hiring a
Chaplain from the ELCA Synod to
office in Brandon, while current Pas-
tor Dennis Tranberg works part time
in Sioux Falls. The chaplaincy at
Bethany has grown to a valued and
respected ministry. With the recent
addition of Bethany Home in Bran-
don and the Assisted Living at BHSF,
a greater need exists for the health
ministry at Bethany. We are commit-
ted to the spiritual well-being or our
residents and community at Bethany.

Last fall as col-
lege football season
was in full swing,
we at Bethany
Home Sioux Falls
were able to treat
one of residents and
his family to a wonderful treat. Or-
ville Pinn, a resident at BHSF, is a
huge Nebraska Cornhusker’s fan. I
guess it only made sense, originally
being a resident of Nebraska – you
are either going to love or hate the
Huskers. Orville and his wife Carol
had always attended at least one
game a year, until this year when
his health changed and it just was-
n’t possible.
As part of our Living the Dream
program, supported by the Bethany
Foundation, we wanted to do every-
thing we could to bring the Huskers
to them. It was a full “team” effort
at BHSF; we pulled off a wonderful
Saturday Game Day event for Or-
ville, Carol and their friends and
family.
Sandy and I “quarterbacked” by
finding a televised game and talk-
ing to family about inviting their
friends and choosing menu items
and trying to get things organized
to bring the Huskers Game to our
Conference Room. Denny and
maintenance were our “sideline
coaches” making sure there were
cushy recliners for Orville and Car-
ol to watch the game, made sure the
TV was set up for the big game and
assured us there were plenty of
chairs for all the guests. Activities
“covered the field” by making sure
the tables were decorated and a
camera was available for memory
making pictures. Laura and her die-
tary staff “threw it into the end-
zone for a touchdown” by creating
a food spread that was out of this
world!!! Every possible “game day
food” was available for this event.
Mr. Sever kicked the “extra-point”
by connecting us to someone in
Husker Ville who provided us with
a signed copy of Tom Osborne’s
(previous Husker’s coach) book to
present to Orville. Sever also parted
with all of his Husker memorabilia
to use as decorations for the event.
It was a great day had by all, Or-
ville and Carol had a wonderful
time surrounded by family and
friends and to top it off – we picked
the right game – Huskers WON!
