As we open the month with the Harvest Festival organized by the Tamil Congregation on the First Sunday, let us show our solidarity with one another and celebrate God’s goodness once again as a Church family. Do you know it was in November, the Noah’s flood came on earth! Recently, I read about the facts concerning the world-wide flood of Noah’s time. In which the Creation Scientist F.Filby suggested that the Flood began in November (the seventeenth day of the second month on Noah’s Calendar – Gen.7:11) and the same fact and the dates are indelibly enshrined in the memory of the human race. He points out that, to many people around the world November brings the Day of the Dead. In the western world, November 2 is All Soul’s Day. Going by that, the November suggests a season of mourning. Whereas, the Christian Calendar presents a Ray of Hope to the human world. Yes it is the Advent of Christ – the Lord visiting us, which begins by the last Sunday of November. Christ came as the light of the World, a light in the darkness. Therefore, we begin the season of Advent on November 28, 2010 with a day’s retreat conducted by the DRM ministries in which Mr. James Retnaraj (former Gen. Secy of EU) will lead the study sessions on Discipleship. Along side our Christmas Carol practices will go on! Let our preparations for Candle light singing, Christmas Tree programme, gift exchanges, Carol rounds etc. reflect this one solid truth that the light which removes all forms of darkness of the human life, has already come in the person of Jesus Christ and is available to all who wants Him. He has already chosen us and called us out of darkness into His marvelous light to proclaim his praises (I Peter 2:9). — Contd in Page 4

Harvest Festival : The harvest Festival brought out to light our hidden kitchen talents when the kabab and dosa stalls headed by Frank, Isaac and other men brought in equally more revenue as that of women. Women folk prove how they develop men quietly and efficiently from behind. Arul and team never compromise on the quality when they organize for festivals and prove Lay Activity committee is the best of all. Thanks to the WSCS, MYF and Sunday School depart-ments who did a very good job. We praise God for the Rs. 1.8 lakhs that was raised in the festival which goes towards the building fund.

Quiz Gesture : BMC notes the gracious gesture of some of its good Quiz Scorers who left way for the new scorers, by not attending the Bangalore Methodist Churches Quiz Programme held on October 10th. Their sincere efforts proved good when Mrs. Kamal David and others bagged the prizes and came. Church encourages them not to keep up the spirit but to participate the quiz next time. Congratulations to Mrs. Kamal David, Mrs. Giftlin Clement, Sthuthi and Jyothi!

Singing Legacy begins : We need to recognize that Singing and praising God is becoming God’s added gift to our Church making a legacy. Our Praise and Worship team recorded 5 tamil songs in FEBA on October 9, 2010 which will shortly be aired over the parts of globe. Also, it was a lovely moment to have Mr. A.G.Rajan’s family sang ‘these are the days of Jehovah’ and the other numbers along with our Praise and Worship team on October 17, 2010.

Youtube advantage : Dr. Rajkumar translated Mr. Thayappan’s testimony from Tamil to English and stirred us on October 16. He did a short home work with Youtube, showing us how to make it a ministry tool. It looks like we can have any language preachers in our Church henceforth.

Hospital Moments : For his surgery, uncle Jeyapaul made it just like that, when

he could get the needed blood donors instantly from our Church only. Pastor could get replies even before the mobile finished sending the group message. May our love and prayers impress God and bless uncle who is in the ventilator at the Fortis Hospi-tal for more than a month now. Not to forget Sharon Sathya also who would make any moment to her advantage even her hospitalization that she brought out her latest poems when she was at Manipal Hospital for a couple of days.

BMC designs : The building Committee at last released the congregation to

focus only on fund raising as they finally finalized the final version of the final design. Before, our minds conceives new vision for more phases and their designs, let us get back and realize that the building work yet to begin and we need to vigorously raise funds for the same. Our next effort is the Sound and Light Show, a ticket programme.

The Parents’ Verse: Both, the Jayanths and Dilips spelled the verse ‘For unto

us is born a child’ for themselves before the preachers would quote it from the Bible next month. It’s a baby girl to Jayanths born at Bangalore Koshy hospital, Bangalore on October 25th and baby boy to Dilips at Kerala on October 31st. Both the babies timed it around their Church’s family Camp. Now, Membership and Re-cords Committee is sitting with their books open.

INSPIRATION

EAGLE’s NESTEAGLE’s NESTEAGLE’s NESTEAGLE’s NEST Though many of us have seen pictures of a huge eagle's nest high in the branches of a tree or in the crag of a cliff, few of us have gotten a glimpse inside. When a mother eagle builds her nest she starts with thorns, broken branches, sharp rocks, and a number of other items that seem entirely unsuitable for the project. But then she lines the nest with a thick padding of wool, feathers, and fur from animals she has killed, making it soft and comfortable for the eggs. By the time the growing birds reach flying age, the comfort of the nest and the lux-ury of free meals make them quite reluctant to leave. That's when the mother eagle begins 'stirring up the nest.? With her strong talons she begins pulling up the thick carpet of fur and feathers, bringing the sharp rocks and branches to the surface. As more of the bedding gets plucked up, the nest becomes more uncom-fortable for the young eagles. Eventually, this and other urgings prompt the growing eagles to leave their once-comfortable abode and move on to more ma-ture behavior. “Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” Hebrews 12:11

The Wooden BowlThe Wooden BowlThe Wooden BowlThe Wooden Bowl A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year-old grandson. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered The family ate together at the table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth. The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. “We must do something about this,” said the son. “I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor..” So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.

Volume 3-11

When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The four-year-old watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, 'What are you making?' Just as sweetly, the boy responded, 'Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up.' The four-year-old smiled and went back to work. The words so struck the parents so that they were speechless. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done.. That evening the hus-band took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family... And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled. We can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles four things: a rainy day, the elderly, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

Bethel Methodist Church, Hoodi, Bangalore Family Camp Family Camp Family Camp Family Camp –––– 2010 2010 2010 2010 –––– Report OutReport OutReport OutReport Out On the evening of 29-Oct-10, about 25 families and a few youth from Bangalore were surreptitiously sneaking from the hectic city ambience into the woods of Claret Nivas in Carmelaram at the outskirts of Bangalore. All of them had one goal: To get founded on the rock of Jesus Christ. Yes! The much-awaited Family Camp of Bethel Methodist Church went live! Keynote Address: The theme of the camp was ‘Foundation on the Rock’ based on Matthew 7:24. Mr.Philip Cherian, chief resource person for the camp, set the stage aptly through his keynote address. He urged the audience to take note of the dangerous context in which the theme verse is placed: “Not everyone who says ‘Lord, Lord’ would enter the kingdom of heaven” (Mt. 7:21). The emphasis is on the contrast of one builder, in being careful as against the other who does work haphazardly. Important thing is to hear God’s word attentively (‘these words of mine’ – v 21) and to put them into practice. Such a builder is a wise one – He would be able to withstand any stormy event. Following is the brief of the sermons we heard which led to deci-sion making. As you read them, we are sure you will recollect what the Lord has taught us. Day-1: Holy Life KNOWING the holiness of God is a great motivator for us to be Holy. God’s Holiness is best explained in I Timothy 6:16 as the only immortal, as the one who lives in unapproach-able light and also throughout Psalm 99. Right from the sons of the first Priest, Aaron, who were consumed by fire for unholy behavior in God’s presence, there are several instances in the Bible that illustrate, time and again, the deadly end of those who failed to be holy. God’s idea was to connect to the fallen mankind by setting apart a chosen generation. So we must purify ourselves as Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 7:1. IN John’s Gospel Jesus cleansed the temple (John 2:15) and the he rescued a sinful woman from stoning (John 8:11). These two explains God’s attitude towards ungodliness. The materi-alism, pride of achievement, drive for fulfillment and complexities of life are those that hold us from being holy. Some practical steps to be holy involve moving out of the fast lane life-style, taking quiet time regularly, renewing commitment towards God, getting trained to be holy, taking control of schedules, having fellowship and eventually demonstrating holiness amidst persecution are the things we need to consider in God pleasing life.

Biblical perspective of a Christian Home.

Singleness is commended in several passages of the Bible (Matthew 19:10, I Corinthians 7:1), because of the danger in failed marriages right from our first father Abraham. This emphasizes God’s role in marriage that is delineated wonderfully in Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12, with a note on cord of 3 strands. Marriage is about a vow - promising to love, to be faithful and giving oneself to the other. It is based on the selfless love of Christ that is showered upon us. The wife’s contribution is narrated in detail in Proverbs 31 and the husband’s role is ex-plained in 1 Corinthians 11:17 and Ephesians 5:25. People attempt to handle marital ten-sions mainly by four ways: excluding conflict, avoiding conflict, dirty fighting and resolving conflict. The last option is the best way to handle it. Practical insights for fostering good marital relationships. - Pastor David Livingston. A primary pitfall in marital life is in trying to find solution to problems apart from God’s will as we see in the life of Abraham and Sarah (Genesis 16:1). Sarah, in choosing to act as per her wish, lost sight of God’s eternal purpose, took Abraham for granted, thought procreation to be the sole purpose of marriage and eventually lost control of her tongue as well. Despite that, the scripture records that Sarah always obeyed Abraham (I Peter 3:6).

What it takes to live for God.

Generally, some people are unaware of what’s happening around, some others just momen-tarily express a concern upon hearing some news, but there are a few others who ask God about what should be done about it and they also do it. God’s call for us is to contribute in building His Kingdom Some of the impediments that hold us from living up to God’s call are: disobedience and sin, fear, discouragement, procrastination, past failures, other’s opinions, distractions, fear of failure, tradition and wrong environment. Both Jesus and the Apostles of the early Church were right on the task (Acts 20:24) in areas beyond (2 Corinthians 10:15), continued to work on the task (2Corinthians 11:27), finished the race (2 Timothy 4:7) and recognized that the task is finished (John 17:4) Once we initiate action, God will be able to do immeasurably more (Ephesians 3:20). Indicators of God’s call are realization of a need, God’s impression on us, specific burden for a ministry and circumstantial evidence. We can thus use the talents given by God in a planned manner for bringing glory to his kingdom.

Day-2: Purpose-Driven Church • Mr. Philip Cherian

The lifestyle of the early church is expressed in Acts 2:42-47. When they faced an issue of food distribution (Acts 6:1), they were crystal clear on their call and purpose – the apostles stuck to mission work, while appointing seven other men filled with the Spirit and Wisdom to attend to the issue. Spirit-filled men like Stephen who did wonders and miraculous signs (Acts 6:8) are the need of the hour even today as mankind strives to solve issues. Despite the complaint by the Synagogue that Stephen was blaspheming (v11), his face looked like an angel (v15), implying God’s endorse-ment of our ministry is far more important than that from men. Stephen’s defense was that the behaviors of Jews were in contrast to Abraham, Joseph and Moses, whom they claimed to be their forefathers. Church is supposed to be on the move with God. Martyrdom of Stephen preceded and caused the rise of Paul as a great apostle – This implies that a sacrifice is precedent to a revival. A spirit-filled church and a church that is continuously on the move with God will become a purpose-driven Church.

The roadmap to building a purpose-driven Church

Thoughts based on the book ‘The Purpose driven Church’ by Rick Warren. A basic tenet of Church building is that Respectability should not be the aim of the church i.e. It should not strive to work respectably with respectable people doing respectable jobs. Paul mentions that the apos-tles became the scum of the earth for the cause of missions (1 Corinthians 4:13). If we were to follow the words of Jesus, we must be ready to lose respect. A video on Jesus reinstating Simon Peter (John 21:15-17) for missions was used to illustrate the fact that if we love Jesus, we must feed and take care of His sheep. The Church belongs to Christ and it is He who builds it (Matthew 16:18). Church is compared to a body, a bride, a family, a flock, a community and an army in the Bible. Church building involves: (a) Loving the Lord with all our heart – Matthew 4:10 (b) Loving our neighbors as ourselves i.e. to minister other people – Ephesians 4:12 (c) Going and making disciples – Matthew 28:19-20, (d) Baptizing and Teaching – Ephesians 2:19 and (e) Teaching them to be Holy – Colossians 1:28. The influence of Church must transcend across 5 spheres of commitment, beginning from the (1) core group through the (2) committed group, (3) congregation group (4) crowd group and eventually to the entire (5) community group. The pur-pose of the Church can be explained as shown in the table below Some practical means to achieve these in the Church are to: (a) Assimilate new members on the purpose (b) having programs around the purpose (c) Educate people on the purpose (d) start small groups [seeker groups & support groups] (e) adding staff on purpose (f) structuring the purpose [Mission team, music team etc] (g) Have preaching, budgeting, calendar events all around the purpose and finally (h) evaluating the purpose.

Bethel Tidings—November 2010

Family and Missions can work in tandem for the glory of God.

Aim of a Christian family must be to serve God, meaning Enjoying God in day-to-day life and living for the spread of the Gospel. Several Old Testament couples like Manoah and his wife, Ruth and Boaz, Zachariah and Elizabeth devoted their lives for God’s will. Aquilla and Priscilla were a role model couple in the New Testament church. We would believe that Moses in OT and Paul in NT were blessed persons, but they really did not live a successful life by human standards. Moses, despite having grown in a royal palace had to strive with Israelites in the desert for most of his lifetime. Paul, despite being a Jewish scholar had to be beaten up by his own people due to his mission work. Yet they were deemed blessed be-cause they were responsible for bringing several people to Christ thereby leaving an indelible mark in history.

Training our Children in God’s way (Mr. P.C.Matthew and Mrs. Ciby Matthew— Urban India Ministries (UIM) )

The three aspects of parenting from the key verse in Proverbs 22:6 – (a) Training up (b)

telling the way to go and (c) the importance of training. Training refers to bringing the wild spirit into submission. Understanding the uniqueness of a child is important to guide him or her. This requires parents to (a) spend time with children (b) recording our observation and (c) letting them know our findings. We must discipline them diligently as explained in Prov-erbs 13:24. The foundation of all of our training and disciplining must be love – similar to

that of God [I John 3:1].

In conclusion, there are six aspects in Godly parenting. They are (1) Expressing affection (2) Being available (3) Helping them accept their failures (4) Using scripture and prayer (5) Teaching by our own example and (6) Disciplining in love.

Effective management of our resources - Time, Talent and Money for God’s purposes.

- Mr. Philip Cherian Paul explains time management wonderfully in Ephesians 5:16 – to make the most of every opportunity. We need to decongest our life and its schedules. In Luke 2:52, we see that Jesus grew in (a) Wisdom (b) Stature (c) Favor with God and (d) Favor with Man. When we box the tasks into highs and lows based on urgency and importance, we can grow in life as Jesus grew. The rule for using talent is in Matthew 25:29. Unused talent will be taken away. Jesus’ parable in Luke 12:48, there is no fourth man implying none gets bankrupt for use of talents. Everyone is unique with different talents so as to enable mutual edification. Money is given to us for sharing (Luke 6:38). Paul demonstrates this through the example of the Macedonian Church (2 Corinthians 8:1-4). The five principles of giving are (1) giving despite hard circumstances (2) giving anonymously (3) giving generously (4) first giving ourselves and (5) giving voluntarily. God would make us content in all we have (2 Corinthians 9:8). As much as God tested Peter by giving a sword in his hands in the garden of Gethsemane to make him aware of what his sinful nature was, so is money given in our hands. Day-3: Church and Missions

The Biblical perspective of Missions based on Philip’s ministry to the Ethiopian minister as explained in Acts 8:26-40.

- Mr. Philip Cherian

The angel of God directed Philip to move to Gaza, since sharing the Gospel is not in the man-date of Angels as they do not have any experience of sin and salvation. Philip obeyed the an-gel’s command when asked to move from a place of mission revival, Samaria to a lone desert place of Gaza. Though the Ethiopian went to Jerusalem to meet God, he only got to know the religion (scrolls) – God had to meet him through Philip. Even today Churches have the possibil-ity of falling into a pitfall like this: Giving religion and not God to those in need. Philip must have had enormous drive for the scripture records that he ran to the chariot. This implies that Missions is not only about obedience but also obeying at the right time. Our value system must be driven by God’s word as Jesus explains in Luke 16:15. Philip’s amazing learning ability must be noted here: He was able to take even an obscure passage from Isaiah to present the gos-pel in an understandable way. We must not baptize just because the person wants it: Philip asked the Eunuch to articulate the reason as to why he wants to get baptized. Finally, Philip implicitly obeyed the angel of the Lord again when asked to move to Azotus – There is no settlement in life for a missionary. History records that missionary revival in Ethiopia is due to the spread of the Gospel through this minister.

21

On your mark, Get Set Go ! - Rev. David Livingston

Scripture records that we are a chosen generation in order to declare His Praises (I Peter 2:9). Jesus promised his disciples that when the Holy Spirit descends on them, they would be His witness beginning from Jerusalem all the way up to the ends of the world (Acts 1:8). Ever since the Pentecost, the growth of the Church across the globe has borne witness to his promise. In Matthew 13:44-45, Jesus compared the kingdom of heaven as a treasure and a pearl. As a church, we must understand what our ‘Jerusalem’, ‘Judea’ ‘Samara’ and the ‘ends of the world’ are and reach out to them to share the gospel of Jesus.

Holy life and missions - Mr. Philip Cherian

The present-day mission field is at our doorsteps – the people we meet in our day-to-day ac-tivities are the ones to whom we must share Gospel. He drove this point using a video that presented the diverse kind of people who live in Bangalore and the plethora of people that knock our doors for some purpose or other. God definitely has a purpose in keeping us in this Bangalore City. Further Mr. Philip mentioned that the initiative could begin even with one man who knows the ‘one thing’ that God wants him to do. Many participants were moved to tears when he illustrated this point using a video on the Brotherhood mission in Chennai, which works in upbringing and feeding of about 8000 neglected kids and children towards God through the vision of one person who felt the need to do so. Subsequently, he gave statistical details about the different religions in India, their belief system and their growth. He concluded that there is a huge need to reach the masses and this is entrusted to us - the Church & the body of Christ. Cherishing Moments in the Camp Talent Time session began with the birthday celebration of Mr. Publius. Mr. Sathiya led the talent time session. A song sung by Rev. Gandhi Selwyn moved prayer session participants. Rev. David Livingston stole the glitz of the session through the puppet show with his puppet Timmy. The magic show by Mr. Sanjay and mimicry by Mr. Eby received much appreciation. Mr. Sathiya’s melodious song at the end came as a lullaby for the tired participants. The second day the talent time began with a puppet show by Dr. Rajkumar and family. Mr. Vivek and his wife Mano celebrated their wedding anniversary by cake cutting and sharing their joy, even as the participants wished them through a traditional Tamil song led by Rev. Gandhi Selwyn. Several of the participants showcased their unique talents. Mr. Isaac and his wife Sonia demonstrated the importance of having a place for God in our lives through a thoughtful skit. Kids brought out their talents in a wonderful way. Sharon and Stephanie Prabhakar sang a group song, while solo songs were sung by Sharon Sanjay and Jordan Publius.Mr. Irwin and family received huge appreciation for their family song anchored by little Hannah. Jayden Clement and Doreen Frank stole the show by their miniature voices. Mr. Joshua and Eby brought out their talents through mimicry. Salome Rajkumar left the audience spell-bound by the song‘Indescribable’.

To-wards the end of the talent time, Mr. Sathiya, received huge appreciation and a ‘once more’ request for the voice he put to some devotional Tamil classics. There were many who clicked all the sessions in their cameras Games Time Mrs. Selina Ronald actively led the participants in a biblical number game that tested their gray mat-ter for bible knowledge and speedy response. Subsequently, they sub-grouped into 3-4 families for fellowship to get to know each other’s families better.
