    Gardens ofEvery Variety

Long before the calendar turns to March,

    passionate gardeners are planning. They

pore over catalogs, review journals, and

compile to-do lists in anticipation of

the first warm days. Others of us wait

for spring to give us a nudge. And why

not? Garden love isnt confined to those

with oodles of time and horticulturalknowledge. There are as many shades

    of gardeningand gardensas there

are greens in spring foliage. Container

gardens deliver high impact from a manageable commitment. Big and small

edible gardens bring healthy homegrown produce to our tables. And cutting

gardens fill our vases for parties or for everyday pleasure.

Even at the beginner level, gardening gives us the opportunity to grow

beauty around us (and to have fun getting our fingers dirty). No matter where

you fall on the green-thumb spectrum, our annual Garden Issue will get you

off to a great start. Youll find inspiration and specifics for a lush perennial

    border,page 58. We have a primer on small-plot vegetable gardening,page 78.

Having upgraded my own deck last fall, Im particularly motivated by thePerfect Planters guide, page 66, with design tips and growing advice for patio

containersthe easiest form of outdoor decorating. Our digital edition takes

planning one step further by providing an interactive tool that lets you mix and

match more than 80 combinations to visualize your next container design.

Beyond the garden, this months home section helps you bring natural elements

inside and connect indoor rooms to out. Our food section brings you new ways

to prepare tender spring vegetables in ways your family will love. (Executive

editor Oma Blaise Ford prepared Pasta and Peas, page 103, for her elementary-age

youngsters, who typically wont touch a pea. They begged for more.)

Whatever your garden plans this spring, our website, BHG.com, is ready to help.

We offer nearly 200 free plans and an extensive video library. Coming this spring,

our Plant Encyclopedia will work seamlessly across your desktop, smartphone, and tablet devices with an improved search, making it even easier to find the

perfect plant. Wed love to help you green up your thumb and your garden.

The sipping gardenAmy Stewart, drinkspert and author of The

Drunken Botanist, is on a mission to bring a tipsy

twist to garden beds. And shes not just pluggingthe essentials like easy-to-grow mint (mojito,

anyone?) or basil for cocktail gardens. Stewart

swears by crunchy celery: I like Red Venture,

which has beautiful red stalks about the diameter

of a pencil that make the best swizzle sticks,

she says. Just one, muddled into gin and vodka

drinks, adds wonderful, savory flavor. Visit

TRY THISA desk stands infor a sofa table

    function galore!

trolling through house after house in search

of the perfect family home, Katy Hollis kept replaying

in her mind a question from her then-4-year-old son.

Whats that green thing people have at their houses?

Alex had asked as they headed to a park near their

condo, not quite remembering the word. You mean a

yard? Katy responded with a quizzical look.

So its not surprising that a big yard where their twoboys could go crazy sold Katy and her husband on their

    1970s split-level home in a Washington, D.C., suburb.

When I walked in the front door, I could see straight

out to the back and a canopy of trees, Katy says.

Today, the home has that green thing going

inside, too. Katys favorite color threads through

itsometimes in lively chartreuse and sometimes

mellowing to olive. Botanicals that designer Lauren

Liess brought in via fabrics and art bring rooms to life.

    SURPRISE!Chalkboardpaint overfiberboardgives the lookof honedgranite.

Theres also a do-what-comes-naturally vibe to the

home. I wanted a house where you can put your feet

up on the furniture and relax, Katy says.

Katy got her wish. Alex, now 13, and Max, 10, toss

their drum practice pads on the kitchen island and

start jamming. Guests jot notes on the dining rooms

chalkboard-topped sideboard, which also becomes a

calendar counting down to summer. And Katy made apoint to take bookworm Max shopping to ensure that

chairs would be comfy for him to curl up and read.

Starting at 5:30 a.m. when Katy rouses Alex for

breakfast, the home is as full of life as the trees

flourishing outside the windows and doors. This house

gave us a great yard, Katy says, but it also gave us a

place where we can really connect as a family. Q

The dining room handles Saturday night board games

as easily as it does formal dinners for the Hollis family,

including Katy and sons Alex and Max, above left. Botanical

prints, above, and cuttings from the garden, left, are a

super easy way to bring the outdoors in.

Call to order(and style)A hardworking potting benchis to gardeners what a well-

stocked pantry is to chefs, says Janna Lufkin, a stylist, organization expert, and avidgardener. Here are a few of her tips:

SEED PLANNER Keep track of what you plant and whenby attaching seed packets to burlap strips, left. Use amagnetic strip ($14.99; containerstore.com) and copperplant tags ($10.95 for 20; territorialseed.com) to labelthe strips by season.

CONTAIN IT Give your potting bench a clean look byusing containers in one or two materials. Galvanizedbins and woven baskets have a natural look, Janna says, and their neutral hues work with bright colors.

GO VERTICAL Look to walls for additional storage space.Add a shelf for bins and baskets. Hooks are great forhand tools, watering cans, even pots, Janna says.

Whether pulling together rooms in her home or designs in hertextile studio just down the stairs, Christina Weber finds inspiration

right outside the door. | |

Home. Business. Garden. Life. For Christina Weber, its all hereat one address. Four years

ago, this graphic designer, who has been producing catalogs

for kitchenware giant Williams-Sonoma since 1995, drew on

that experience to start her own little textile design company,

Studiopatr. Heres how she turned adjoining spaces at her San

Francisco apartment into a singular live-work-inspire home.

Start simply. Christina uses plain linen as a canvas for

the bold, colorful prints on her tea towels, and her interiors

share a similar starting point. I like neutral backgrounds,

she says. Its like a white sheet of paper. Its whats there

    before you create something wonderful.

  • 5/25/2018 Better Homes and Gardens USA 2014 03.Bak

    42/152

Connect with nature. Her best design decision, Christina

says, was opting for French doors in her living room and studio

to welcome leafy views and sunlight. It creates such a great

flow, Christina says. And the light washing in brings the

different neutral colors on my walls and furnishings to life.

Layer in personality. With a neutral backdrop, the colors

and patterns I do put in get noticed, Christina says, whether

she uses a subtle stripe on the sofa, cheery aqua solids on

cushions, or playful patterns on pillows and tea towels. Some

speak to Christinas love of bold, modern graphics. Others have

a more direct message, like a pair of pillows in the living room.

They remind Christina that life is best lived in slow motion.

Plant something. For Christina, that means a garden

getaway in her small backyard, but it can be as simple as pots

on the patioanything to keep the magic of nature near. Just

taking five minutes away from the computer screen to go out

and water the hydrangeas is so therapeutic, she says.

Sprinkling in wood furnishings adds warmth to

    Christinas neutral-based living room, opposite

top, and eating nook, this photo. Aqua accents

were inspired by artwork. Just downstairs is the

    garden, opposite bottom,where Christina

planted vines to cover a chain-link fence. The

bench is her favorite spot to grab lunchand a

    bit of fresh air.

  • 5/25/2018 Better Homes and Gardens USA 2014 03.Bak

    44/152

Take inspiration from what you love. For Christina,

thats nature, of course, but also cooking and eating well. Inthe morning, she might stroll out with a cup of coffee to watch

hummingbirds flit about what she calls her wabi-sabi garden.

Its modeled on a Japanese aesthetic that embraces imperfect,

impermanent beauty. Im not a garden designer, Christina

says. All I did was put in a lot of my favorite thingslike

Meyer lemon trees and hydrangeas. I just wanted to be able

to go pick something. Throughout the day, she calls on those

snippings to shape patterns as she works in her studio. In the

evening, living creatively means trying out a new recipe. It

seems natural that my love of cooking, my love of design, and

my love of nature all came together in my work, Christina

says. And its fitting that the simple linen tea towel, which youcan find in any kitchen, became the canvas for my work.

Leaves, branches, snippings fromthe gardentheyjust seemto find their

    way into mydesigns.

    companies to produce hand-printed textiles,

for artist Stephanie Wheeler, finding inspiration

is as simple as a stroll through her Atlanta

garden. There is always something in bloom, but

I couldnt see it from the house, she says. Her

dark galley kitchen looked over the driveway, and it was

bringing her down. I wanted the kitchen to emulate the

light and vaulted ceilings of my studio in the backyard,

she says. Its where this colorist paints landscapes,

florals, and more. After hiring a general contractor, Stephanie gutted

the kitchen and the adjacent offi ce to make a new,

larger kitchen with a view. The banquette bumpout

was designed to look as if it had always been there. I

grew up in an old house, so Im drawn to architecture

from this era, she says. In renovating, I wanted to

maintain the integrity of the house. She chose updated

classic materials: cabinetry painted warm white, Carrara

marble counters, and wood floors. She gave the kitchen

character with a mix of materials like brick and wood

plank that she unified with paint. The textures and

layers make it more interesting, she says.

have turned theminto a couple of pros. And theyre happyto share their secrets to success.

Gardening hasnt always beensecond-nature for Peggy and Loren

Krantz. Years of experienceGarden novices when they purchased their home in 1986, the

Krantzes focused first on scattering seeds of annuals in the area once

occupied by a horse barn and corral. Talk about fertile ground! The

flowers flourishedand so did the weeds. The couples strategy for a

more fuss-free garden: Give annuals a supporting role, but focus on

perennials, ornamental grasses, and shrubs that offer beautyeven

without blooms. I have grown to appreciate the shapes, textures, and

colors that foliage offers, Peggy says.

Once established, these permanent plantings require only a spring

shearing (theyre left standing all winter for their architectural beauty)and fresh mulch, the couples secret weapon. Its an annual race to get

bare ground covered before the weeds sprout, she says. Mulch really

    keeps the bullies at bay.

The Krantzes keep their gardens fresh and fun each year by

adding or editing a border here and a structure there. Loren takes on

woodworking projects with enthusiasm. I have to refrain from giving

him ideas at night so he doesnt stay awake thinking about it, Peggy

says. Most architectural elements inspire new border designs. Its no

wonder these two anticipate spring so much. Gardening has been the

perfect match for us, she says. We love working side by side.

For most cat parents, the biggest factor in choosing a cat litter is

odor control. Thats why BLUE Naturally Fresh is made with

walnut shells. In lab tests, walnut shells proved to neutralize odor

better than pine, wheat, corn or clay.

And when it comes to absorption, walnut shells also proved

superior. In fact, because BLUE Naturally Fresh Quick-Clumping

litter has up to 3x better absorbency, one bag of Naturally Fresh

can last as long as three bags of the leading clay litter.*

Whats more, BLUE Naturally Fresh is:

    Harder clumping*

    Low tracking

    Virtually dust-free

All natural, annually renewable, and biodegradable

    Proven superiorodor control.*

    Proven tolast longer.*

    The proof is in

    the walnut shell.

    Learn more atBlueNaturallyFresh.comAvailable in Quick-Clumping, Quick-Clumping Multi-Cat and Non-Clumping Pellet.

To some people its just a walnut shell. To us, its the most effective way

to neutralize cat odorthats why we created BLUE Naturally Fresh.

    Lasts longer with

    3xbetter absorption*

*In separate independent studies commissioned by Blue Buffalo, BLUE Naturally Fresh Quick-Clumping litter was found to: (i) have a liquid absorption capacity at least three times greater perounce than the leading clay-based litter; (ii) control ammonia odors better than the leading clumping litters; and (iii) form harder clumps than the le ading pine, corn and wheat clumping litters.

BLUE Naturally Fresh litter is biodegradable if composted, or disposed of in a similar fashion. Landfill disposal of litter in plastic bags is not conducive to biodegradation.

Finishes and materialsThere are many options for container gardening. The look, price,

Anatomy of a planterUse these tricks for the perfect planted pot:

USE QUALITY SOIL Loose, peat-based potting soilis the standard for containersits light and well-aerated, and it drains perfectly. Never use gardensoil or old potting soil. (Amending garden bedswith used potting soil is a great way to get rid of it.)

REDUCE WEIGHTUse a lightweight filler in thebottoms of large pots to reduce the amount ofpotting soil you need to buy, and to lower theweight of planted containers. A layer of landscapefabric keeps soil separate from the filler below.

ALLOW DRAINAGEAn outdoor planter must havea drain hole. If not, create one with an appropriatedrill bit. A filter pad at the bottom of the pot willkeep soil from escaping.

PROTECT THE SURFACEA saucer will catchdrain water where you need surfaces to stay dry.Pot feet are an alternative that lets you easilyclean under planters.

WORRYFREEA drip system isa perfect way tokeep pots well-

    watered, evenwhen you areon vacation.

Care and feedingEven the best design wont continue to thrillif you dont take care of it. Heres how:

WATERHow often should you water? The shortanswer is, as often as needed. A pot in full sun mightneed watering as often as twice a day; a shade potcould need it only once every few days. If soil is dry onthe surface, water. If not, waitoverwatering can beas harmful to some plants as underwatering.

FERTILIZER Plants in pots quickly use up thenutrients in soil, so supplemental fertilizer iscritical for season-long vigor and flowering. Addsupplemental fertilizer every few weeksgranularand water-soluble products both work.

PRIMPINGRemove spent blooms and dead leavesand stems. Also, dont be reluctant to do a littlelight trimming to keep the arrangement well-proportioned and to prevent a fast-growing plant

    from taking over.

    TOP ITMulch reduces

water loss, looks nice, andprevents soilfrom splatteringin the rain.

Container plants havejust one season to shine.Consistent water, fertilizer, and a suitable locationsunlovers in sun, shade loversin shadeare the keys tolush, bountiful plantings.

Keeping it freshA new plant now and then can really helpkeep a container looking new.

REPLACE DEAD PLANTSIf a casualty leaves a holein your design, replace the dead plant with a newone. Look for a specimen that matches the size ofthe other, now-larger plants. Its best to choose adifferent kind of plant from the one that died, so youdont experience the same problem twice.

KEEP UP WITH THE SEASONS As summer windsdown, many plants become exhausted and stopblooming. This is a good time to switch them out forfresh fall plants to give the containers an autumnlook. Keep any foliage plants and annuals that arestill blooming well, then mix in fresh kale, pansies,or mums, for example.

Design guidelinesThriller, filler, spiller. Its a basic, nearlyfoolproof formula for good-looking containersevery time. Use these ideas to add your ownunique flair to your pots.

GO BEYOND ANNUALS Use perennials, shrubs, andsmall trees to anchor designs. Tropical plants likecanna and elephant ear are striking in pots.

PACK THEM INUse four, five, or more kinds of plants. As long as you have a mix of thrillers, spillers, andfillers, your pot will look great.

DECORATEAdd accent objects for extra personality.Branches, gourds, stonesthe options are limitless.

GET LEAFYTry foliage-only designs withplants like coralbells, coleus, and creepingJenny. Or include just one flowering plant, beautifully framed by a leafy backdrop.

USE TEXTUREChoose plants forcontrasting form and texture as well aspleasing color schemes.

Small WonderA few tricks of the trade can turn yourtiny vegetable garden into a bountifulsource of fresh produce all season.

Test garden tipsBetter Homes and GardensTest Gardenmanager SandraGerdes shares hard-earnedwisdom about getting themost from a small garden:

Site the garden in full sun.Virtually all vegetablesproduce more in sun.

Grow bush-type squashvarieties, which need lessspace than vining types.

Use a trellis to trainrambling vines up, insteadof out. And be prepared totrim shoots to keep vinesfrom sprawling.

Place trellises and tallplants like tomatoes on theeast or north side of thegarden so they dont shade

    shorter plants.

Have a season-long planfor succession plantingand interplanting. Seedetails, page 80.

Start seeds indoors whenpractical for your region,so your plants can hit theground growing as soonas transplanted. To learnwhen to plant vegetablesin your region, go toBHG.com/PlantingTime .

INTERPLANTINGThis means planting onecrop at normal spacing, then a second, faster-maturing crop betweenthe rows of the first. The faster crop will beready to harvest beforethe other one fills in. Forexample, mix radishesand carrots; the radisheswill be ready for harvestbefore the carrotsgrow large.

SUCCESSION PLANTINGPlant a new crop assoon as the prior crop isharvested from the samespace. For example, lettuce and peas maturein late spring or earlysummer. Immediatelyafter harvest, usethe same space togrow relatively fastsummer crops, such asbeans or basil.

BLOCK PLANTINGGrow greens, beans, peasanything thatsrelatively lowin solidblocks. The goal is toreduce or eliminate theopen spaces betweenrows of vegetables. In asmall garden (less than4 feet wide), you shouldbe able to reach all partsof the garden from theperimeter, eliminatingthe need for paths. Q

    showing how

    it might look

    just as summer

    planted.
