Having a very sick child can be a

traumatic event for the whole family.

At Connecticut Children’s we

understand this and so we work to

treat the whole family.

Family-centered care is not just a

nice idea, it measurably and

positively affects outcomes.

We are proud to be Connecticut’s only academic

medical center dedicated exclusively to children.

Our doctors, nurses, and other caregivers

understand that our patients are not small adults.

With a depth of skill and expertise that comes

from years of experience caring solely for children,

Connecticut Children’s stands at the forefront in

delivering expert and compassionate care.

Above all, we recognize that family members

are key members of any child’s care team. At

Connecticut Children’s, we include the family in

the care of their child from the minute they arrive.

No one knows their child better than their family.

Making it clear they are included at every step is

a foundation of the healing environment that is

present throughout our entire Medical Center.

Families become partners in care and share

in information completely and without bias or

restriction. They help set goals and are encouraged

to be actively involved in their child’s care. The

end result is that the support and participation of

families helps us achieve healthier outcomes for

children, both inside and outside our walls.

This year marks an important milestone for

Connecticut Children’s, as we begin the transition

from our 2008-2012 strategic plan to a new five-

year plan that will guide our decision-making

for the immediate future. While the goals and

objectives of the plan may change over time, our

focus on family-centered care remains constant.

It’s part of the fabric that makes Connecticut

Children’s unique in southern New England.

In the last five years, we have grown into a

much bigger and better Connecticut Children’s.

We now provide care in 16 locations state-

wide, including our hospitals in Hartford and

Waterbury, our neonatal intensive care units in

Hartford and Farmington, and our specialty care

centers in Hartford, Farmington, Glastonbury

and Shelton. Included among our other practice

locations are new offices in Danbury and Fairfield,

the beginning of what we expect to be further

expansion into that region of the state.

Connecticut Children’s growth is propelled by

our belief that we have a responsibility to provide

the highest level of care to every child in need,

regardless of status, background or how they

came to be in our care. We take great satisfaction

in the work we do each day and our partners who

help make it possible. Our commitment to family-

centered care is at the center of all that we do and

helps give our children the care they deserve.

Sincerely,

Martin J. Gavin

Hundreds gathered for Connecticut Children’s 4th Annual Cycle of Life, held in honor of pediatric cancer survivors and children currently undergoing treatment for cancer. The festival celebration raised more than $31,000 for Connecticut Children’s REACH for the STARS Survivorship Program.

4

Page 7: Better together. Family-centered care. event for the whole family. ... We now provide care in 16 locations state- ... Better together. Family-centered care

At Connecticut Children’s we have a simple, yet

powerful vision. Our aim is to make the children

of Connecticut the healthiest in the country.

A key component of this is our ability to

provide the highest quality of pediatric care in a

safe, family-centered environment. But it takes

much more than just caring for kids after they

are sick or injured. It also requires a concentrated

focus on programs centered on community

health, health promotion and preventive care, and

child advocacy. In short, protecting kids before

they require our medical care.

Connecticut Children’s has taken an important

step in this direction with the launch of our Office

for Community Child Health (OCCH). The office is

dedicated to developing and supporting existing

and future community programs that promote

children’s optimal healthy development. Following

in the footsteps of our Easy Breathing and Help

Me Grow® initiatives, new programs will be piloted

right here in our own community.

The potential benefits from these programs

are enormous. As an example, Easy Breathing,

Connecticut Children’s acclaimed asthma

management program, was recently awarded

a 2012 EPA National Environmental Leadership

Award for its work in reducing the burden of

asthma for families in our community. Since

its inception, Easy Breathing has enrolled over

100,000 children in the program, which is now

being replicated across the nation. Already,

interest in replicating our success from our Office

for Community Child Health has come from

providers across the country.

Due to the scale and scope of amazing

accomplishments Connecticut Children’s has had

in improving children’s health, some tend to forget

that we are a not-for-profit hospital, primarily

established to benefit our own community’s

children and families. It is important that as our

footprint expands, we don’t lose sight of the

critical asset Connecticut Children’s is for our

own children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

None of this would be possible without the care,

dedication and professionalism of our talented

employees and affiliated health care professionals.

On behalf of the Boards of Directors of

the Medical Center, we invite you to join us in

celebrating our past accomplishments, and

sharing and supporting our vision for the future

health of all our children.

Sincerely,

H. Mark Lunenburg

“Every child is different and I depend on the

family to help me understand exactly what

their child needs from me to have the best

experience possible, “says Colleen Brown,

surgical Child Life Specialist at Connecticut

Children’s. “I want to give the child just enough

age-appropriate information to help him or

her know what to expect. This has a dramatic

effect in reducing anxiety in the child and

leads to better outcomes.”

“Colleen and all the Child Life Specialists

at Connecticut Children’s are great. Chelsea

has had 40 operations, so we’ve met a lot

of people through her care,” says Chelsea’s

mother, Pam. “Connecticut Children’s is the

best of all the hospitals we’ve seen. We are so

much more comfortable here. Colleen talks to

Chelsea the whole time. She always lets her

know exactly what will happen next. Right up

to when the anesthesia kicks in. To tell you the

truth it helps me relax, too. I’m sometimes so

nervous on the drive in that I feel sick. But as

I listen to Colleen explain the procedure or tell

a story, I find myself forgetting about all the

‘what if’s’ that were making me so nervous.”

Child Life Specialists work with the entire

family to provide age-appropriate education

for patients and their siblings. Colleen said,

“We are also big believers in play. The more

we can do to normalize a child’s life while they

are with us the better. Many of our kids will

need several procedures over time to make

them better. If we can actually help them

look forward to coming to see us, instead of

being afraid of the hospital, it just creates a

better experience for the whole family. Having

a child in the hospital can be an emotionally

draining experience. We find that if the

parents and patient can relax, there are fewer

complications and it’s easier for everyone to

cope with the situation.”

Colleen concludes, “Chelsea has a

condition that will keep her coming to the

hospital until her body stops growing. I’ve

known Chelsea since she was very little and

it’s great to see her growing up. I’ll be glad

for her when she doesn’t have to come to the

hospital anymore, but in the meantime it’s

always wonderful to see Chelsea and her mom

when she does have to come in.”

Connecticut Children’s Child Life

Specialists are experts in child

development. Child Life Specialists

help children cope with their

hospital experience through

play, preparation, education, and

activities. While the Child Life

Specialist’s primary concern is

always the child, they must also

look beyond the patient to provide

information and guidance to

parents, siblings, and other family

members. A child’s well-being

depends on the support of the

family, so a Child Life Specialist

provides emotional support to help

the entire family be more at ease.

They also play a vital

role in educating caregivers,

administrators, and the general

public about the needs of children

under stress.

Connecticut Children’s is in the

forefront of a movement to get

the patient and family more

involved in all aspects of care.

During daily ‘rounds’, doctors,

nurses, and sometimes medical

students, discuss the status

of the patient and agree on a

treatment plan for that day.

Traditionally this discussion was

considered to be an exclusively

medical and/or professional

conversation and took place

without including the family.

At Connecticut Children’s,

families are encouraged to

participate in morning rounds.

FAMILY-CENTEREDROUNDS

“We’ve been in and out of the hospital since

my girls were babies,” says Evon Black,

mother of Nicole and Corine who both suffer

from sickle cell disease. “Nobody wants to

be in the hospital or to have children in the

hospital, but we feel so at home here. That

makes everything a lot easier.”

Evon continues, “I like being included

in morning rounds. It gives me a chance

to organize our day by understanding the

treatment plan for that day. If I have questions,

the treatment team is always happy to explain.

We’ve seen so many doctors and tried so

many treatments over the years, it can be a

little overwhelming sometimes. So it’s nice to

start the day with a clear plan. The doctors

and nurses let me know what to look for in

my girls as a sign of progress or something to

bring to their attention.”

“Studies have shown, and it has certainly

been our experience here, that getting families

more involved in their child’s treatment

decisions improves communication and the

overall satisfaction of the family,” says Anand

Sekaran, MD, Medical Director of Inpatient

Services at Connecticut Children’s. “Of course,

everything we do is aimed at improving the

outcomes and well-being of our patients. And

we’ve found that when a family is included

and understands the treatment plan — what

we are doing and why we are doing it — they

are more likely to stick with the plan. Parents

clearly are the most knowledgeable about

their children. And parents are the best

advocates for their children. So we want to

get them involved and keep them involved

wherever possible.”

Dr. Sekaran adds, “We do understand that

not all parents are comfortable participating

in rounds. So we tailor our approach to fit

the family. Some families wouldn’t dream

of missing rounds, but others are more

comfortable with a one-on-one update

later in the day. All families are different, so

maintaining flexibility is the best way for us to

make sure everyone gets what they need.”

Family-centered care is a core belief at

Connecticut Children’s. With family-centered

rounds the Medical Center continues to keep

finding new and better ways to give children

the best care possible.

The Adolescent & Young Adult

(AYA) Cancer Program provides

medical care and support services

for patients up to the age of 21 at

Connecticut Children’s Medical

Center and in collaboration

with adult oncology specialists

at UCONN Health Center. The

AYA Cancer Program includes a

multidisciplinary team including

specialists in oncology, general

surgery, orthopedic surgical

oncology, radiation oncology,

nurses, social workers, a consulting

psychologist, radiologists, and

patient life specialists. The program

treats patients with a wide range

of cancer diagnoses including

Leukemia, Hodgkin’s and non-

Hodgkin’s lymphoma, soft tissue

and bone sarcomas, brain tumors,

and germ cell tumors.

CLINICAL TRIALS

When 14-year-old Scott

Spalding came home

after soccer practice

with a sore hip one

afternoon in 2006,

his mother, Annette,

thought a Tylenol and

some rest would make

everything better. But

after several doctor’s visits, X rays, an MRI

and a CAT scan, she and Scott discovered it

was going to take quite a bit more. Scott was

diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare form

of cancer that had already metastasized to

Scott’s lungs. At least one doctor didn’t expect

Scott to live to see his nineteenth birthday.

Since then the family has been through

any number of treatments looking for just the

right treatment for Scott’s particular cancer. “I

was thinking about the expression: what goes

up must come down. But I am changing it to:

Already down? You’ve got to get back up,”

says Scott’s mom. “As you watch your child

go through chemotherapy, your heart is heavy,

and your emotions are numb and you wonder

how he will ever get through this. But he has,

time and time again. Just when you think

he can’t take any more, the week ends, the

treatment is over and you take a deep breath.

And you hold it until you see the next scans.”

“In the early summer of 2011, Dr. Isakoff

told us about a clinical trial of a new drug

called Aurora Kinase. We started the trial and

after week eight results were very promising.

Of five tumors on his lung, two were gone,

one noticeably smaller, and two slightly

smaller,” Annette recalls. “Unfortunately, we

had to stop that trial because of radiation

Scott needed for another condition. When

radiation finished, Dr. Isakoff began working

with the pharmaceutical company to get us

access to the treatment again. Eventually

they agreed to a compassionate use.”

Annette continues, “We have been to a

lot of hospitals with Scott’s illness. But we

always feel like we’re home when we are at

Connecticut Children’s.”

Dr. Isakoff added, “Scott has a difficult and

complicated disease. But he is a determined

young man with a great family supporting him.

He’s been through a lot, but he keeps coming

back with a great attitude.”

The Connecticut Children’s Family

Advisory Board consults and

provides direct family input with

many departments in the hospital

that seek to improve the patient

and family experience at the

Medical Center. The board advises

on policy, review documentation,

and provides an external, family

perspective in the decision making

processes. The volunteer board

consists of parents and staff

who have had a child treated at

Connecticut Children’s. There are

currently seven active Family

Advisory Boards at the Medical

Center including one hospital-

wide FAB and five specialty FABs.

FAMILY ADVISORYBOARD

A family’s total commitment to making life better for children. There’s an old expression, if you really want to

get something done ask the busiest person

you know. Whoever came up with that must

have had Hope Feliciano and her husband,

Cesar, in mind. After successfully raising three

children of their own, Hope and Cesar have

been taking in foster children with complex

medical needs. They currently have four young

children at home. Two they have adopted and

two are more recently in their care. Their home

is certainly filled with activity, but it’s also filled

with lots of love and caring.

Hope was asked to join the Family Advisory

Board two years ago and continues to serve

today. “I really enjoy serving on this board.

The hospital genuinely listens to our input. It’s

very rewarding to see our ideas implemented

throughout the hospital,” Hope explained.

The Family Advisory Board was formed

five years ago. It is composed of 15 volunteer

families, drawn from Hartford and surrounding

communities, whose lives have somehow

been touched by Connecticut Children’s. The

Family Advisory Board has provided feedback

on a host of subjects, from how to make it

easier to get around the hospital to having

family members present at rounds. Hope

continues, “We talk about all kinds of ideas.

When we feel an idea is important enough to

bring forward, we’ll present it to the hospital.

It normally doesn’t take very long for the

hospital staff to address and implement our

recommendations.”

The Family Advisory Board has been so

successful that there are now six Specialty

Family Advisory Boards: Primary Care, Cystic

Fibrosis, NICU, Sickle Cell, Cancer, and the

newest board focused on Weight Management.

“The doctors and nurses, actually all the

staff at Connecticut Children’s, are just terrific.

And my husband and I have seen some

amazing recoveries with the children we’ve

taken into our home. The fact that the staff

at Connecticut Children’s work so hard to

get even better at taking care of these very

sick young patients is inspiring to be around.”

Hope concludes, “I’m very busy with the

commitment we’ve made to raise medically

challenged children, but I feel good about

participating on the Family Advisory Board

because I see that our work there is making

things better for everyone.”

Page 25: Better together. Family-centered care. event for the whole family. ... We now provide care in 16 locations state- ... Better together. Family-centered care

Dear Friends,

The commitment to providing family-centered care reaches

far beyond the walls of Connecticut Children’s Medical Center

extending throughout the communities of our region and beyond.

Our dedicated philanthropic partners ensure we are able to invest in

the special people and resources that make every care interaction

the most advanced, compassionate and family-centered it can be.

Connecticut Children’s is growing and thriving because of your

generosity. The tremendous advances we have made in expanding

our clinical services throughout the state, increasing our research

initiatives, growing our accomplished faculty and providing

exceptional care to the children and families of our region has all been possible

because of donor support.

2011 was another record-breaking year for the Foundation. With more than

15,000 gifts from individuals, corporations, schools, foundations and organizations,

the Foundation received $10 million to help the Medical Center fulfill its mission.

This total represents an incredible 163% growth in just five years and has been

integral in making Connecticut Children’s a bigger and better place for children

and their families to receive care.

As Chairman of the Foundation Board, it is my pleasure to extend our deepest

gratitude to all those who have chosen to make the health of children a priority in

their philanthropic giving.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey S. Hoffman

State of Connecticut Attorney General George Jepson paints a picture with a young patient at Connecticut Children’s. Jepson shaved his head as part of a St. Baldrick’s fundraiser in support of children that have lost their hair as a side effect of treatment for cancer.

In October the new Clinical Care Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders welcomed its first patient, Ian Fagan, age 3, from Hebron. Pictured is Ian with his mom, Cindy Links-Fagan, awaiting their appointment in the new Center.

Connecticut Children’s have long-standing relationships with many local sports teams, including the New Britain Rock Cats. As part of our partnership with the Rock Cats, Rocky and Rock Cat players can often be found at the Medical Center visiting with patients and families.

Many patients at Connecticut Children’s added their hand prints to a Hyundai Santa Fe as part of the Hyundai Hope on Wheels® event held at the Medical Center. Since 2006, Hyundai Hope on Wheels® has provided $120,000 to help Connecticut Children’s physicians and researchers get closer to a cure for childhood cancer.

You can never be sure who you might run into at Connecticut Children’s. Earlier this year, characters from the movie Happy Feet 2 stopped by to visit patients and families as part of the Medical Center’s special visitor program.

Papo Collazo and Bill Wilson from the Steve Shore Recovery project spent a day with a patients as part of Connecticut Children’s ArtReach program. The two musicians hosted a “Strumalong Workshop” where patients built and then learned how to play their own strumalong guitars.
