BEYOND SIGHT //

the inspiration //

o  we played various games with the kids of Mathru school like in-out, the clapping game, dog and the bone, etc.

o  The most popular game by far was the in-out game

the in-out game the game involves one person standing in the center calling out words and/or clapping the children have to respond in reaction to what the person in the center calls out in : jump inward out : jump outward left : turn left right : turn right various with claps were used instead of words as well

Page 3: Beyond sight 02

the inspiration // o  the kids seemed to take to the in-out game quite easily

o  it was easy to understand the rules and the game was very easy to play

o  it had aspects which trained their listening skills, spatial awareness as well as co-ordination.

o  the children seemed to like the game despite it’s repetitive nature

o  they liked the game even when it was played inclusively (without anyone getting eliminated), proving the fact that the game was more fun to play, than to win

o  The older kids enjoyed the game more when it was not inclusive, whereas the younger kids didn’t really care who won

the challenge // o  to take the idea of a really simple game and make it even more

enjoyable o  the simplicity of the game was in the fact that it involved movement

that was quite easy to perform

o  the game also trained the children to listen and react

o  taking both of these aspects and improving them was the challenge

o  adding an element of sound to the game while maintaining its simplicity was also a challenge

Page 5: Beyond sight 02

the concept // music is universal o  The concept would be that anyone can create music and everyone

can enjoy it

o  Introduction of notes of music in conjunction with the in-out game

o  Stepping on any spot would a play different note of music

o  Depending on where users are standing there would be different notes being played in a sequence

o  It would still maintain the simplicity of movement and add a musical element to the game changing it entirely

o  While maintaining the concept this module can be used for several different types of games as well as a learning aide

the concept // Ascending -------------------------------> Descending

Ascending -------------------------------> D

escending

the grid the size of the grid is variable and is based on the number of sounds to be used the left to right and top to bottom flow from ascending to descending notes is maintained

Page 7: Beyond sight 02

the concept // o  the grid can be made using a mat with haptic sensors which will be

used as input

o  there can be a separate attachment for a sound output which can be connected to speakers

o  there can also be additional modifications so that the squares in the grid will light up when stepped on

o  the surface of the mat will have to be slightly rough so as to prevent slipping

Page 8: Beyond sight 02

other applications // o  the grid can also be used as a learning aide, if possible various

squares can be used to make alphabet sounds

o  these sounds could be used to teach children how to make words

o  learning would become more interactive as well as more enjoyable as opposed to the boring method of rote learning

o  the module could be used in a vast number of ways
