THE MILL

1086 Believed that this was one of the Domesday mills.1279 Probably it was this mill that was occupied by "villein Rogerat Mill".1638 It is believed that Timothy and Margaret Boddington had been atthe mill and after their deaths, the mill went to Richard Ford .

1655 John Boddington of Steeple Barton seems to have been part ownerwhen the water mill, a barn, fishing and common rights of pasture weresold for £132. (Close Ro lL, )

1660 Probably bought back by John Boddington.1735 Timothy Boddington, of Middle Barton, miller, leaves his housewith mill to son J,ohn.1795 It was owned by Thomas Boddington, Enclosure Award 107, 38perches.1805 Thomas Boddington died. The mill, formerly occupied by ThomasBoddington (father of testator) was sold to John Reeve, mill~r.In 1806 it was sold to Thomas Hollis, mill etc for £450.

Unfortunately the stones in Steeple Barton Churchyard were moved about30 years ago and some stacked on top of each other. The stone forDorothy (d 1727) is visible but broken and the part below the date ofdeath is lost. Timothy's (d 1736) is either broken or placedunderneath other stones. We copied (very hurriedly) some informationfrom the Society of Genealogists given to us by by Robert Boddingtonwhen on a visit from USA about 10 years ago. Timothy's age, said to be90, seems to be the problem. Which Timothy was he and was he really90?There are records of Boddingtons in Oxford, William 1529, Thomas 1579and John 1579. Another, undated record refers to a John who wasapprenticed to a brewer. We have, however, found no evidence linkingthese Boddingtons with Steeple Barton Boddingtons. The first mention of the family here is the will of John Bodenton ofMiddle Barton, 1604. There is a 1635 will of Margaret Boddingtonwidow, of Middle Barton, and it is probably her descendents who werehere until 1805.Timothy, will of 1735, is described as a miller and we know thatBoddingtons owned the mill (and other property) here when they sold itin 1805. Wills and an inventory give information about the family, some of whom also appear in village records as church-wardens.

THE PEDIGREE REGISTER

@obbington.,The surname of BODDINGTON is most probably derived from the

name of a place. As there are two (and may have been more) placesof that name in England it by no means fol1ows that all BODUINGTONSare related to each other. In Domesday Book we find a place called Boddington (" Boting-

tune ~'), ncar Cheltenham in Gloucestershirc-and Upper and LowerBodington, alias Boddington (one joint parish), in Chipping Wardenhundred, Northamptonshire, (CC Botendonc ").

Domesday mentions also three places called ((Bodctone " in York-shire, in the wapentakcs of Morley, Skyrnck and" Anestig" respect-ively. RUODER'S Gloucestershirc, 1779, (P.300), says that Bodington istrom the British word' bod " a mansion, and sigllified a capital houseor mansion in the town lipan the water. It\KER'S No ri/ul1Jlp tonsliire,() ·f77), conjectures that the Domesday' Botcndone ' is from' botcu',a contraction of the Saxon plural of 'hotl " a habitation, and' dune I

or 'done I, a down; which exactly corresponds with the situation ofthe upper village, overlooking the rich pastures of Stoneton andWorm leighton, just over the border in Warwickshire. Upper andLower Bodingtolllie just co miles north, within a three hours' horse-back-ride of Steeple Barton.

The main portion of the pt:digree now prinrcr], shewing the imme-diate descendants of Timothy Ho 1>1)1N(:TON of Steeple Barton, whodied ill 1736, is recast with slight additions from the l)(·t!~,<r(:(' o/IIIt.:r~lIl1ily of Bot/ding/on, (POLL.ARD & Sons, J·:xt'tt:r, I H8<), oblong t~)lio,Spp). The result of a further attempt to discover the antecedents ofthe above Timothy is now printed, in the hope that further detailsmay be forthcoming to make the chain complete.

It is interesting to note that these Steeple Barton BOllJ)INGTONSweft', right back to Timothy, who died in 1730 (at least there is muchfact and a strong presumption}, a race of corn-millers. WhenMI'. Henry BOODING,),ONof Manchester (I R 1.1-1HH{», visited SteepleBarton about '1R60, there was a tradition of an old time BOJ)J)INGTON,

a miller, a wonderful weight (sack) carrier, with a rcm.ukably resonantvoice (a family characteristic), which was heard distinctly across thevalley, a mile distant. John BOJ)J)IN(~TON, son of Timothy, migratedto Cuddington in Buckillgharnshirl'; was there ill husincss as a miller, before 1713, and died there in 1746. He it W:lS, presumahly, whotook Cuddington wind-mill, which" has been ill' possession of thef:unily tor nearly 200 years. His great-grandsoll, John BOODlf'.:CTON(1777-1839), branched off to Tharne (watcr ) corn-mill; and Timothy(d~17-1885) John's youngest son, following up old tradition and sym-pathy, became a corn-miller in Manchester. I

I ask for any data, as to any BODDI NCTON, anywhere, but moreparticularly as to anyone of the name ill Oxtordshirc, Northam ptOIl-shire, or Warwickshire, with a view to making a complete record ofthis old yeoman family,
