A fervent plea to Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan
to produce teachers of international standard wasmade by Sri. M. Veerappa Moily, Union Ministerfor Corporate Affairs.
Speaking at a function in the Bhavan inconnection with its Platinum Jubilee whichcoincides with the 125th birthday of K.M.Munshi, its founder and visualiser, on July 7,Sri Moily opined that promoting education doesnot end with setting up institutions and putting upimposing buildings. The more important task is tohave teachers who could imbue in children highideals and cultural values. “Today we see a dearthof such teachers” he observed.
Hence the Vidya Bhavan which is engaged inpromoting education and culture will do well topay utmost importance to teacher’ training, hedeclared.
Paying handsome tribute to KulapatiMunshi’s contribution in upholding the cultural
heritage of the country. Sri. Moily said as onewho was known for his liberal outlook Munshijiwas a cultural Titan who played a significant rolein designing the national flag. “His part in theintegration of the country is equally noteworthy”,he pointed out.
More importantly, Sri. Moily said byinvolving himself in literary pursuits, Sri. Munshihad become a model to our youth… “I wish suchideals get imbibed in our youth today”, he added.
Dr. U.R. Anantha Murthy, the JnanapeethAwardee, who was the chief guest, pointed outthat the poets and writers of today are limitingthemselves to the area of their own language.
Because of this, he said, it has not beenpossible for them to identify themselves at theglobal level. In this context it is creditable that theBhavan is engaged in translating the works of onelanguage into others.
Referring to the multi-faceted personality ofDr.Munshi, Dr. Ananthamurthy, said his concern
for environmental balance deservesspecial mention.
In the well-attendedprogramme which was verily thecurtain riser for the twin events,Sri. Moily released 26 books ofDr. Munshi in Kannada translation. The titles were published by theBhavan’s Mysore Kendra.

MUNSHIJI'S SOLID CONTRIBUTION RECALLED ONHIS 125TH B' DAY
The Bangalore Kendra of BharatiyaVidya Bhavan found in its annual Nanjaiah SettyMemorial Lecture, under the joint auspices withthe Sai Grace Foundation, an ideal launching padto herald the 125th birthday celebrations ofKulapati K M Munshi, its visionary founder.Nor could there have been a better way to launch
the year-long celebrations than to pay wholesometributes to his immeasurable contribution.
And who else could be more appropriate todischarge this awesome task than Sri H N Dastur,Executive Secretary and Director General ofBhavan World Wide. Equally significant is thefact that this sacred function on July 14 had

far-flung branches and the educational, culturaland literary pursuits through institutions thatsprouted out of them.
Humbly confessing that however much hemay try, his portrait of the man and his missionmight remain incomplete, Sri Dastur describedMunshiji as a man of fertile imagination, profound scholarship, aesthetic creativity and a
good sense of humour. He explained that allthese faculities are found in good measure in hiswritings in Hindi, Gujarati and English. Munshijihas to his credit 126 books, many of them havingseen more than one edition, he added.
Though known as a builder of institutions,Sri Dastur described that Munshiji’s greatestcontribution was literature. As solid, Sri Dastur

GOVERNOR H R BHARDWAJ'SHEARTY GREETINGS
Dr. H R Bhardwaj
I am very happy that Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan
is celebrating its Platinum Jubilee this year.
Incidentally, it also happens to be the one hundred
and twenty fifth birth anniversary of Kulapati,
Dr K M Munshi, on 30th December, 2012.
So this year is very significant, for us, because
Dr. K M Munshi, founded Vidya Bhavan with the
vision of value based education in India. The very
concept of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and its
philosophy pursued through the Kulapati is that
India should remain associated and linked with
its ethical and moral values which are enshrined
in our Vedic tradition. And he also provided
modern education with a spiritual base. This was
his unique thinking, which was his own.
Many people from various religions got
associated with this movement and it became a
very powerful force, it is still being the hope
for a good system of education in the country.
India is a country of saints and spiritual giants.
So we cannot conceive a society devoid of
spirituality. Yet, we want to build a modern India.
In this pursuit, Dr. Munshi shall be our guide and
philosopher.
I had the unique distinction to know
Dr. K M Munshi when he briefly practiced law
and assisted him in one or two matters. So, I had
the occasion to know how Dr. Munshi became
such a big leader, philosopher, and freedom
fighter, meeting the constitutionalist needs to
practice.
He said ‘I am building Bharatiya Vidya
Bhavan and I work only for Vidya Bhavan. I was
so happy to see the dedication of the Kulapati and
I also started taking interest in Bharatiya Vidya
Bhavan in New Delhi.
This has been a great institution and
I am so happy today that I am still associated
with Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. We are happy that
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, although slowly and
steadily is getting firm roots in the educational
system of our country. We wish that this very
system be adopted in the country as part of our
education programme.

sensitive minds to recapture the fundamental
values of our culture in a form suited to
modern conditions, cutting across political,
religious and socio-economic barriers.”
Bhavan upholds our ancient concepts:

DANCERS FROM INDONESIA REGALE
A LARGE TURN OUT
A scene from the Indonesian Ethnic Dance-Drama - Shikandi Weerapati
An over-crowded Khincha Auditorium of
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan where many more wereforced to stand, recently greeted a mixed fareby a 15-member cultural ensemble fromIndonesia. The programme was sponsored by theICCR in collaboration with the Embassy of theRepublic of Indonesia in India.
This unique programme was organisedas a part of Platinum Jubilee of Bharatiya VidyaBhavan and 125th Birth anniversary ofK.M. Munshi.
The evening began with a Leng-gang Kipasdance, which gracefully depicted the progressionfrom youth to adulthood. With gestures symbolic tothe motion of growing up, it was an interestingconcept. This was followed by the ZapinLenggang Kipas, that originated from Indonesian
areas with a strong Islamic influence. Here thedancers use a fan as a prop, highlighting theimagery. Taruna Jaya from Bali stood out forits youthful and vibrant movements.
Next in the list was a slower dance withgentle tip-toe movements executed exclusively bygirls, playing a traditional Indonesian instrumentmuch like the Indian ektara. Here dancing andplaying the instrument simultaneously made itenjoyable.
Besides there were Indonesian landscapesplaying on a screen in the background and withtheir hands swaying and calculated hipmovements as it were to transport the audience tothe avenues of Indonesia. The lead singer, singingthe Bollywood’s Humko Humi Se Churalo, addedto the amusement which won the hearts of theaudience.
27
The finale of the evening was a dance-dramaof Shikandi Weerapati, adapted fromMahabharata.. However, here Shikandi is theicon of heroines, the fighting symbol of women’semancipation. Some lovely and elaboratetraditional attire and headgear worn by thedancers, as they displayed bravery in the
battlefield of Kurukshetra right up to Bhishma’sfall was the high spot of the piece.
The use of both contemporary and traditionalmusic was innovative and the huge cast verilymesmerised the audience with flawlesscoordination. A rewarding experience.

Amidst the ongoing multifarious functions
in connection with Bhavan’s Platinum Jubileeand 125th birthday of its legendary founderDr. K M Munshi an equally significant eventreceived due recognition on November 30.It was an impressive programme at the KhinchaAuditorium to celebrate the 50th year, goldenjubilee of the coming into being of the BangaloreKendra of this mega cultural organization.
That sanctified beginning around November-December 1962 was innocuous in as much as itwas merely the sales section of Bhavan’spublications that heralded it. This happened atthe initiative of Dr. R R Diwakar, who togetherwith Sri Munshiji, was joint Editor of Bhavan’sBook University series. Hence naturally interestedin the promotion of its publications. It must besaid to his credit that he himself offered a cozy

The proposal found ready response fromSri S Ramakrishnan, Bhavan’s ExecutiveSecretary who instantly made arrangements toorganize the section.
The function to mark this event was moreemotional than being formal. In the sense,Sri H N Suresh, Director, and Sri N Ramanuja,Chairman, Bhavan Karnataka, showeredencomiums on an embarrassed individual whowas present at that function more by virtue of hishaving been working for Sri Diwakar than by hisown crede.
More importantly, he was felicitated bywrapping him with a shawl, fruits, flowers and

Governor H.R. Bhardwaj on Sunday,(July 21) came down heavily on both theState Government and the Karnataka SanskritUniversity on their negligent attitude towardsthe Sanskrit language. He opined that neither theformer nor the latter, nor even other organizationshad come forward to develop and promote theancient language.
Inaugurating the eight-day long a uniqueVedic Conference in Bangalore jointly organizedby the Bhavan's Bangalore Kendra and ISKCONat the latter’s premises, as part of Bhavan'sPlatinum Jubilee celebration.
Dr. Bhardwaj, said India had so much tooffer in terms of Vedic Science. In this contexthe stressed the need of the State Government
and the Sanskrit University to give attentionboost to the growth of the language of the Vedas. But he said he was disappointed over the way thelatter was functioning.
He recalled that “the university was set up soas to nurture the language. But it had failed infulfilling the very objective which is to save thelanguage and spread its knowledge among themasses, he added.
Stressing the importance of Vedic literature,Dr. Bhardwaj explained that Vedic maths, Vedicastronomy and Vedic medicine were the threequintessential studies from which “we canbenefit greatly to meet the various needs of thepresent generation”. He hoped the institutionwould take necessary steps in this direction.

If the purpose of the ambitious conferencewas to encourage the younger generation tomake use of the ancient wisdom extant in theVedic texts, it can be safely claimed that theobjective is served adequately, judging by thefair sprinkling of engineers in-the-making inthe large turn out.
Here is how some of the youngsters viewedthe conference
“I came here to know more about thegreatness of Vedas. There is a scientific base thatour Vedas share and has a major role to play inthe formulation of a just and a better society,”said Dipayan Banerjee, a 19-year-old student.
“There is much to follow in Indian culture.Instead of aping the west, we should dig deep intoour tradition and we will be surprised by the
amount of treasure. Vedas are not only for theold. Young generation should know moreabout them, as the principles mentioned canhelp improve society,” is the view of TattwaDarshi, another engineering student whoattended the inaugural.
The conference that opened in the jam-packed ISKCON auditorium saw theparticipation of over 100 eminent scholarsfrom across India in the next seven days. The different sessions sought to enlightenthe young to use Vedic texts in everyday life.
“Vedas are universal and do not belong toany particular section of people or religion. They transcend geographical boundaries andpreach that we should live peacefully with natureand fellow human beings,” said R. Ganesh,

Spanning 80 hours, involving more than
100 eminent vedic scholars and Ritwiks, many
time more that number, the first ever “Vedic
Samvada” jointly organised by Bhavan’sBangalore Kendra and the ISKCON provedto be a resounding success, the overwhelmingresponse of theists it enjoyed day after dayduring the eight days adding to its sense ofdesideratum.
Though overly ambitious, the task ofscheduling and enlisting support of Vedicscholars from across the length and breadthof the country and handling the associatedlogistics was by itself a challenge and anopportunity. But the facile manner in whichdisparate factors fell into their places undoubtedly
speaks for the good will earned and popularityenjoyed by the Bhavan in general and Dr. K MMunshi in particular, the occasion itself markingthe platinum jubilee of the former and the125th anniversary of the latter. The spontaneityin which all the speakers paid tribute to eitherwas only in the fitness of things.
The inauguration of the daily two-sessionedeight-day meet itself had an auspiciousbeginning with rhythmic chanting of Vedicprayers, led by Bennegadde Narayana BhattaGhanapati. The traditional lighting of the lampby Governor, Dr. H R Bhardwaj was followedby a warm welcome by Sri N. Ramanuja,Chairman of the Kendra, a brief on the ambit ofthe conference by Shatavadhani Dr. R. In his inaugural talk, Dr. H R Bhardwajreferred to the lofty ideals enshrined in theVedas adding that they had a message to theentire world, a message that is invaluable forall time to come.
‘Concept of Religious Tolerance in theVedas’ was the topic on which the ‘Samvada’began its eight-day deliberations. The speakerwas Prof. Nabanarayana Bandopadhyaya,Director, School of Vedic Studies in RavindraBharati University, Shantiniketan, Kolkata. It really set the tone for the wide-ranging scopeof the conference, the professor in his scholarlyexposition covering the whole gamut of Vediclore and its ramifications in both the spiritual andtemporal contexts.
RHYTHMIC VEDIC HYMNS:
Accordingly, the subjects that came up forconsideration in the 16 sessions, interspersed byrhythmic chanting of vedic hymns by ritwiksdrawn from different parts of the State, were asdiverse, speakers enrolled from all over thecountry giving a good account of their depthof knowledge and capacity to build the themeconvincingly.
The sum and substance of all theiroutpourings is that the sacred Vedas have a hoarypast, dating back to pre-historic times, result ofmeditation and realisation by a line of eruditerishis. Their findings were not reduced to writingas such. Hence all the works had passed on frommouth to mouth of their disciples, the scholarshipof each one of them no less prodigious. That wasthe Indian heritage, ultimately handed down tothe present times in all its traditional glory.

This rich inheritance, this vast storehouse ofknowledge, took more than a 100 strong team ofscholars to unravel before the avid listeners whoturned out in numbers day after day through theeight days. One dare say they were adequatelyrewarded as could be gauged by their beamingcountenance.
HALF-BAKED CURRICULUM :
Roughly and in a nut-shell the focusoverall of the first-ever seminar of the kind,is the consensus that the Vedas long concededas a sacred testament has not received its dueeither by its votaries or the powers that be oreven those who attained profundity in their fundof knowledge. On the contrary, it was noted thateven some of the contemporary, so-calledGurukulas are seemingly content in fosteringhalf baked curriculum imparting merely thetextual part of the subject and ignoring the
equally vital study of the accompanying rituals oryajna. It was, however, in the same breath agreedthat a beginning had been made by way of thismega conference of the Bhavan with whole-hearted cooperation of ISKCON to atonewhat is unquestionably a lapse of our countrymenin general and the intelligentia in particular.
At the same time, the positive side of thespectrum cannot go unrecorded. No doubt, in aconference of this magnitude in which some ofthe best literary brains in the country have inter-changed their ideas, the output is prodigiuous.Nor a journalistic approach can do justice to themall. Yet going through some of the salient pointsthat surfaced in the meet deserves consideration,as has been done in the following few sentences:
The entire assemblage of speakers was of oneirrefutable opinion that Vedic learning was notrestricted to any one sect, sex, age or class,

women and non-Brahmins not excepted. The very fact that a Muslim, Christian,Sikh were among the large number of speakers, vouches for its universal applicability. Infact,it was felt that the time has come when theunlimited possibilities of technical advancementare fully exploited to see this treasure-house ofknowledge is made universally available, at thesame time carrying conviction of its usefulness.
A FITTING FINALE :
In this context to mention some names forany special contribution in this regard would beinvidious. Suffice to say that what is important iseach one of them came out in full measure tomake the unique meet a success, the six recipientsof awards not excepted. More importantly, mostdeservedly the concluding session turned out tobe a fitting finale to the proceedings when Swami
64
Sri Harshananda Maharaj of theSri Ramamrishna Math, Bangalore, who said he was thrilled at the wholeapproach, and Sri H.N. Ananth Kumar, former Central Minister and MP commendedthe joint effort of the two institutions.
At their prompting, it was agreed that theSeminar should not end as a one-time proposition. It must become a continuous process, to beconvened once a year or atleast biannually. To achieve this objective a separate committeeunder the leadership of Bhavan and ISKCONmust be set.
Sri. H.N. Ananth Kumar who endorsedthe idea, announced a sum of Rupees twenty fivelakh for the proposed centre from the MPs AreaDevelopment Fund, an auspicious start for thecentre indeed.
At the conclusion, it is but natural that themembers of the Bhavan who had workeduntiringly for the success of the meet receiveda standing ovation.Sri H N Suresh, Directorof the Bhavan proposed a vote of thanks with
particular reference to the whole-hearted supportreceived by the ISKCON.

of the country and society can be good administrators”, declaredChief Minister Siddaramaiah, at a function in the Bhavan onOctober 17.
Inaugurating the Bhavan’s K M Munshi Institute for GoodGovernance jointly organised by the Bhavan’s Bangalore Kendraand Subhash Charitable Foundation, he agreed that there wasdisorder in the Government and reiterated that effecting somedesirable changes would be his priority.

country. Indeed, there is no doubtthat providing a responsible andtransparent administration was theprime concern of any administratorworth the name.
In the discharge of suchresponsibility, the Chief Ministerexplained that the administration isvested in a political party throughthe power of the ballot. Hence, oneshould discharge the function of anadministrator for and on behalf ofthe electorate and not for oneself.“One must not forget that all thosenominated in the Government mustwork as the representatives ortrustees of the people”, he asserted.
Referring to the aspirationsof the people, Sri Siddaramiahdeclared that he would strive tothe utmost to serve the needs andrequirements of the poor, down-trodden and other backward classes.“That, however doesn’t mean thatthe Government is not concernedabout the interests of the others. The prime concern of a democracyis extending equal opportunities toevery individual”, he said.
In an oblique reference tothe media, which he felt haddeveloped a tendency toensitize news, Sri Siddaramaiahwas sore that news reports aboutthe impoverished and the oppressedhad lost importance in recent times. He averred that the newspaperscould play a big role in transformingsociety “by lending voice to thevoiceless”.

SPEAKERS LAUDAUTHOR’S DEBUTWITHHIS CLASSIC NOVEL
A good or worthy novel is one which is
endowed with the capacity to inexorably captivatethe reader, according to Prof. G. Venkatasubbiah, the famed Kannada litterateur and lexicographer.
Speaking after releasing a novel entitled‘Moonbeams and The Mango Tree” at theBhavan on October 27, he said that the bookunder reference was a case in point. The novelin English is authored by Dr.T N Dilip, a popularorthopaedic Surgen of the city.
Explaining how he had himself given upreading novels almost 30 years ago, thecentenarian Prof. G.V. who is as much recognisedas an exacting literary critic, confessed that hehad completed reading the voluminous book inthree days. He said that should speak for thefacile development of the story, impactfulnarration and impressive characterization.
Referring to the conception of the plotitself, GV praised the convincing way in whichthe author had juxtaposed ancient beliefs andcontemporary notions. The build-up of characters, both major and minor, is equally interesting, toadd to the sustaining quality of the narration,he added.
Sri S N Chandrasekhar, a senior journalist, who spoke about the book, complimentedDr.Dilip, who in his very first attempt hassucceeded in writing a fiction comparable withsome of the best in the language. He particularlymentioned the lucid style of an English writer inIndia like Manohar Mulgaonkar (Bend in theGanges, Prince) and an English author likeMargaret Mitchell (Gone With The Wind), whoperhaps wrote an only novel which became amasterpiece.

He said he was fascinated by the wayDr.Dilip set up the queer onset where the hero(Surya) desirous of starting his day by prostratingat the feet of his master, the pontiff of the BenakaPeetha, only to find that the latter is dead.
It is certainly an unusual beginning for astory, he asserted and went on to describe how thebuildup of the story and the characters is asfascinating, giving glimpses of the life in a HinduMonastery, campus scene in a University, as alsothe discreet romance to add spice to thenarration.
More importantly, the characterization is sonatural and impactful that an avid reader willinvoluntarily see himself in the portrayal of someof them lending credibility to the author'slifestudy. He said Dr. Dilip had done a
commendable job and hoped that the Mango Treewon’t be his only novel. Overall, he commendedthe novel to all those interested in good reading.
Author Dr.Dilip who said he wasoverwhelmed by the response he himself and hisbook received, especially thetwo eminent speakerand hoped he deserved it all. He was especiallythankful to his boyhood friend, Sri H N Suresh,Bhavan’s Director, but for whose earnestness, hiswork could not have been printed and thankedSri.H.R.Ananth of Bangalore Press for havinggot the volume ready in such a short time.
