Brighton & Hove - City Sports & Physical Activity Awards 2009

This was only the 2nd year of these awards and is a celebration of the most elite and hard-working sports performers in Brighton & Hove. It gives local

people a chance to be acknowledged for achievements and successes within the field of sport.

Brighton & Hove Ptanque Club were nominated and then shortlisted for the Active for Life Participation Award. This award recognises the work of a community group or club that has made an extra effort in 2009 to reach out and encourage new participants to become active and get involved in community sport or physical activity. The award may serve to recognise

a particular project/initiative that has attracted a lot of new members to an activity, or one that has sought to encourage and enable people who face the most barriers to become more active.

The awards were held in the wonderful surroundings of the Old Market in Hove and attended by various Councillors, the Mayor, the new Chief Executive of Brighton & Hove, staff from the Sport & Leisure team of the

Council and various representatives of the community based sports and activity clubs in our city. Representing BHPC were Ray Ager, Pat Connolly, Terry Gibbons and Tony Mann.

It is fantastic that BHPC has been recognised in this category and is testament to all the hard work put in by the EC and many of the clubs members in promoting the sport, our club and encouraging members of the public to participate. Our involvement in the TAKEPART Festival of Sport,

It was great to see some of this years new members featuring high up the table. Special mention to Daniel Taylor (5th), Jeff Taylor and Marcus Hayward (=7th), Chris Holden (9th) and Nick Rowlands (10th).

Heres what some competitors had to say about the

competition. It was great getting the opportunity to play with and against so many different people and picking up tips from so many of them - the club has lots of very generous players!

It would be good to have this competition twice, at the start of the season and at then end

It must have been a logistical nightmare for the organisers !

I enjoyed the experience of playing with some of the more experienced club members

It must have been complex to organise but it all ran so smoothly

It was really good fun and a lovely end to the season

As has been acknowledged in some of the feedback this is a complex competition to run. However many competitors were roped in to assist

with the draw (ensuring no one was teamed up with people they had already played with) and also helping with checking and totalling the scorecards at the end. It was due to this help that the competition ran so smoothly so thank you to everyone who helped out.

Club Moving Mle Doubles Sunday 11th October 9.30am for 10am start

This was the clubs final all-day competition of the year and despite a grey and drizzly morning a very

    respectable 22 members competed.

In this competition everyone gets to play with someone different in each round. The first round was an open public draw using the familiar BHPC bingo machine. The next rounds were also random draws but ensuring that the team formations were

always different. With 22 players taking part for each round there were 4 doubles matches and 1 triples match. This negated any need for byes throughout the day.

There were 3 rounds in the morning before a break for lunch. At the end of the morning session only three players had achieved 3 out of 3 wins and

these were David Alfred, Fergal Hogan & Tony Mann.

During lunch the competitors held a vote to decide whether 2 or 3 rounds would be played in the afternoon session (this had been agreed in the morning). By an overwhelming majority a further 2

    rounds were organised.

The 4th round ended with further wins for David A, Fergal H and Tony M continuing their 100% record. In the final round however Tony lost his game but both David & Fergal finished as the only players with 5 out of 5 wins.

Having only conceded 17 points from all five games David Alfred was the winner with a points

difference of +48. Fergal was not far behind conceding only 22 points to take 2nd place.

Pictured above David Alfred (left) and Fergal Hogan

    (right) with their respective trophies

There were two players who both achieved 4 out of 5 wins but with a superior points difference Ray Ager claimed 3rd place over Tony Mann.

The final table and placings are provided in the next column.

EPA European Cup for Club Teams 2008/09 Knockout Competition

This knockout competition is to find the top 4 club teams who will then play off in a separate event to find the overall winning club. The winning club will represent the EPA at the Confdration de Europenne Ptanque (CEP) European Cup for

    Club Teams competition.

Each club is allowed one team. All players must be EPA members for the current year and hold their membership through BHPC to play for BHPC.

Our squad is as follows :- Main squad of 6 Ray Ager David Alfred Janice Doherty Norman Hazelden Fergal Hogan Tony Mann

2 reserves Pat Connolly Terry Gibbons

We were drawn away against The Junction Inn at Groombridge in the 1st round. Unfortunately they

withdrew and we received a bye through to the 2nd round against our good friends of the Welcome Stranger in Crowborough. At the time of going to press we had not played this match yet but we will keep you updated in next months newsletter.

Autumn Mixed Doubles League From 5th September to 1st November

The clubs Autumn Mixed Doubles League ended on 1st November. There were 12 teams in total who entered but unfortunately due to illness one team had to withdraw. This meant the remaining 11

teams had to play a total of 10 games each.

    The remaining teams were :- Pat C & Terry G Jill C & Bill C Janice D & David A Di V & Chris V Nick R & Chris H Trish T & Jeff T Ann W & Tony M Dona C & Max C Jill G & Clifford C Pat K & Eddie K

    Olive S & Alain D

At the time of going to press there were only 2 games remaining to be played which they were hoping to complete over the weekend of 31st Oct & 1st November.

If these 2 games are completed then it will mean that every team would have played each other

once. A win earns 3 points and 1 point is earned for a loss. The overall winners are the team with the most points and in the event of a tie the highest match points difference.

Ann Wordsworth has been running the league encouraging everyone to arrange and complete their games and obtaining everyones results. If

you have not yet done so please provide Ann with your scorecards ASAP so we can verify the results. We hope to be able to announce the results of the Autumn Mixed Doubles League at this months AGM and present the prizes. Dont forget that everyone who entered this league will win

    something!

The final league table will be published in next months newsletter.

The results of the league go towards the 2009 Player of the Year Award which will also be presented at this months AGM.

If you played in the league then please share with us your experiences. What worked well for you ?

What did you enjoy the most ? What was your favourite match and why ? Please let Tony Mann know and he will compile a list of responses to be included in next months newsletter report.

Winter Singles League From 14th November 2009 to February 2010

The Winter Singles League starts on 14th November. This is a great way for you to keep playing through those winter months which unfortunately are fast

approaching. In 2008/09 the clubs Winter Singles League winner was David Alfred.

Open to current members it costs only 3 per person to compete. Flyers advertising the league were sent out with this newsletter. You can pre-register for the Winter Singles League making your

payments to Ann Wordsworth. The closing date for registration will be Sunday 15th November.

Each player will be provided with instructions & scorecards detailing all the players taking part and this will be used to officially record your scores.

The games can be played at any time and on any terrain between the competition dates as agreed by the players. Each player should play each

other once. A win will earn 3 points and 1 point is earned for a loss. The overall winner is the player with the most points and in the event of a tie the highest match points difference.

The results of the league go towards the 2010 Club Player of the Year Award.

NO PARTNER? NO PROBLEM! ITS SINGLES!

All clubs registered with the EPA by the 31st May with a minimum of 6 members (one

of which must be of the opposite gender to the other 5) are automatically entered in the draw.

Ptanque Competitions Jeff Taylor shares his recent experience

Less experienced ptanque players enjoy two great advantages in entering as many

competitions as possible early in their career. Firstly, I have found experienced players to be very generous in providing advice and encouragement to those who are just starting out. Secondly, there is far less pressure in terms of

expectations. People are impressed if you can get all three boules within three feet of the jack and, furthermore, nobody expects you to hit an opponents boule if you have the nerve to play as shooter they just admire your willingness to have a go.

minds, but I must confess to being more than a

little nervous about playing with such good players in the sort of tournament which attracts other top-rate players within a considerable travelling distance of the venue.

However those who dare! As all readers of the newsletter will have guessed, Ray and Tony made me feel very comfortable and relaxed, but, as

none of you will have guessed (me neither) we went on to win the competition and a cash prize as well, both experiences a novelty for me. Of even greater value was the enjoyment of playing with people who have lots of experience of playing at this level and are willing to share their

knowledge of what makes a team successful, not just with technique and tactics but also with the character to remain relaxed and considerate to their team members when things arent going as planned.

To understand the personal qualities of successful

players really needs the experience of partnering them and therefore of creating opportunities for this to happen by simply being there, being willing and by being keen to learn. The particular tactics for the team on this occasion however can be written about more easily.

We knew that the Adur members played mostly on the lower, smoother terrain and our tactics

were therefore that, when facing Adur opponents, we would choose to play on the higher, more challenging terrain if we won the toss. Also, each individual attempted to play within a plan that was discussed and agreed by the whole team.

Other tactical decisions included throwing a

medium-length jack until we knew enough about our opposition to compare their strengths and weaknesses with our own and then we might choose to throw a different length jack in the light of what we had learned. Another element which helps in all competitions is to

ensure that the game situation is kept under review after each boule so that all team members agree on what is being attempted with each play. This helps with the focus and concentration needed to be as consistent as possible over the course of a days play.

There is much to be gained in entering as many competitions as possible in the various formats the club offers as well as trying open competitions at other nearby clubs, such as Adur and Crowborough, and you will find that your skills improve and your enjoyment increases.

Furthermore, as explained above, the less experienced you are the easier this is so make a resolution for next year to put yourself out there as much as possible in the competition world before you get too good and it becomes more difficult!

Ray Ager adds his thoughts I'd just like to say what a pleasure it was to play -and win! - with Tony & Jeff. Both joined the club

as beginners and both regularly attended the club's Beginners to Winners coaching sessions and both have really applied themselves to the game. The results are clear to see.

Speaking personally, I know very well I'm not a naturally talented player but, like Jeff & Tony, have tried to learn and practice as much as

    possible, to improve my game.

Although for many ptanque is "a fun game" to play well you have to treat ptanque as "a serious sport", i.e. correctly learn the basic techniques, train, practice, build a team, play competitions, etc, etc, just like any other sport.

The club is going from strength to strength - I'd

love to see Sussex advance is a similar fashion and for Brighton to have some of the top regional teams. I hope that next year we'll see developing support for coaching at both a club and regional level.

When people learn how enthusiastic and willing you are you will also find

other opportunities open to you. Early in October Ray and Tony found that their regular team members were not available to make up a

triples team to play in an open event at Adur and they asked me if Id like to join them.

I said yes immediately before they had the chance to change their

Adur Open Autumn Triples Sunday 4th Oct

You may have read Jeff Taylors report on the previous page of playing alongside Ray Ager and Tony Mann in this competition. The competition was also to be a fundraiser for the EPA Ladies Team that was to be representing England at the Ladies World Championships in Thailand this year.

Debbie Elcombe of Adur PC is one of the members of the ladies team. Unfortunately it was announced before the start that the England Ladies Team would not now be going to Thailand. This was a surprise to all those present but the competition went ahead none the less.

It was a 5 round snake competition which is whereeach team plays 5 games always against different opponents (3 in the morning, lunch, then a further 2). Jeff was the first pointer, Ray played middle and Tony was the shooter. They got off to a great start winning all of their morning games. After

lunch their form continued with a further win. In their final game they were up against Debbie Elcombes team and unfortunately they lost this match.

Surprisingly none of the teams won all 5 games and there were 3 teams on 4 out of 5 wins. Two of those teams had a superior, but same, points

difference and were tied for 1st place. The BHPC team were one of them and Tony suggested a play-off which was turned down, the organisers suggested a toss of a coin which all turned down. Finally the 2 tied teams agreed to share the 1st and 2nd prize money between them and declare

    themselves as joint winners !

    Pictured above Ray A, Jeff T & Tony M

Crowborough Social Club Open Doubles Sunday 18th Oct

This was another fundraiser, this time towards Team Sussex 2010 (raising funds for the Sussex Squad for next years Inter-Regional Championships). Three BHPC teams entered using the competition as a good training exercise for possible team formations for the European Cup for Clubs Teams

    competition (see page 3).

The 3 BHPC teams were :- Pat Connolly & Ray Ager

Janice Doherty & Fergal Hogan David Alfred & Tony Mann

There were 10 teams in total and they were split into two leagues of 5 for the morning sessions with 3 games in total being played in each league by each team (including a bye in each league in each round). Unfortunately for the

BHPC teams they were all drawn in the same league and all had to play each other in the morning. This kicked off with Pat & Ray beating David & Tony with a terrific display of pointing from Pat. Janice & Fergal lost their opening game and then had to play David & Tony in the

2nd game which they also lost. Pat & Ray had a bye for their 2nd game (a 13-7 win) and then beat Janice & Fergal in their 3rd league game. David & Tony won their 3rd game too.

It was a seeded rolling knockout for the top 8 teams in the afternoon and Pat & Ray were

seeded as the number 2 team whilst David & Tony were 6th seeds. Janice & Fergal did not make the main knockout but played against the bottom team of the other league in a best out of 3 plate and this they comfortably won.

In the main knockout both BHPC teams won to go through to the last four. David & Tony lost to

Martin & Chris from the Wheatsheaf who went on to also beat Pat & Ray in the final. So Pat & Ray finished a very respectable 2nd place with David & Tony winning their last match to finish 3rd.

Pictured above Pat & Ray being presented with their wine by Norman Hazelden

If you have entered into any ptanque

competitions outside of BHPC then it would be great to include a mention of it in our newsletters. Write a short piece on your experience and email, post or hand it to Tony Mann for inclusion.

Top Tips & Etiquette Regular monthly column providing different tips, rules and ptanque etiquette to gradually build up your knowledge & expertise of the game

Last month we looked at Set Pieces - the first boule. This month will examine when the opponents have a boule resting on one of yours

Set Pieces are the various situations that frequently occur in many game situations. The most common Set Pieces are:

the 1st boule and your response to it when the opponents have a boule resting on one of yours

a well defended end, where you've played a good first boule and the opponents have surrounded it with their boules

These are the sorts of things that regular teams need to practise and agree, to a) save time but b) more importantly, ensure better team play with hopefully everybody in agreement.

Although there are an infinite variety of positions, we'll look at two common ones: when your boule is behind the jack and the

opponents play onto it, giving them the point and

when your boule is in front of the jack and the opponents play onto it but you still have the point

As always, your response will depend upon a

number of factors: how many boules you and the opponents have to play

your team's strengths and weaknesses whether the terrain is easy or difficult how many points you'd realistically like to

    score

Again, endless permutations - that's why teams need to work out their tactics.

    continued on page 8

So, assuming you're first boule goes behind the jack and the

opponents then point onto it - a classic devant de boule, in front of the boule, as the French say. You've got 5 boules left to

play. If you're good at pointing, you could try the same shot, i.e. try and rest on their boule - but there's not much room and you need to

    be very accurate!

  • November 09 Page 8 www.bhpetanque.org

Top Tips & Etiquette continued from page 7

The danger with pointing is that you can easily play 3, 4 or even 5 boules and fail to beat them -

and they've got 5 boules to play...

Assuming you've a good shooter - or 2 - then you'll want to shoot. If you're lucky, the opponent's or both boules will go and you'll be left with the point. If you've very lucky - or very good! - you'll carreau and the opponents will

    then have the problem.

The danger is that you take your own boule out, leaving theirs on. This is a very real risk and if you do shoot, you have to be prepared for this possibility and the fact that you'll probably have to shoot again to gain the advantage. With a strong, confident and accurate shooting team,

    you can take this risk.

This is more a question of style or strategy: are you prepared to take the risk of shooting but giving them the point - knowing a good

shot could leave you with 4 more boules to score with, or

do you play safe, happy to take the 1 point?

The choice is yours - time to get practising on the terrain and see what works best for your team.

In the second case, you're first boule is in front of the jack and the opponent's

rest on it. We have to assume the opponents have played all their boules, otherwise it's not your turn to play! You've really got the same

problem: not much room to point and shooting risks taking your own boule out.

The AGM is not all about electing the next EC.

It is also your chance to decide the club membership subscription rates for 2010

To hear reports from me as the current President and from Olive as your Treasurer

We will be in a position to provide you with more details of the costs of the PST Club Storehouse. In particular the business rent and rates that are to be charged by the Council

We will announce the final table for the Autumn Mixed Doubles League

We will have presentations for the Autumn

Mixed Doubles League and also the Spring Doubles League

We will announce the winner of the 2009 Player of the Year Award

There will be other surprises too

This is also your chance to ask questions of the current and future EC.

With the total number of members reaching an amazing club record of 108 it also means that we must have at least 27 members in attendance at the AGM for the meeting to take place and for the club to continue to run its

business. In short we need you there to continue to run your club so I sincerely hope to see as many as you as possible at our AGM on the 29th

    November.

A message from your President Tony Mann

Youll have read on the front page of this months newsletter the clubs magnificent

achievement of being Highly Recommended in the category of Active for Life Participation Award at the Brighton & Hove City Sports and Physical Activity Awards last month.

It was a great honour to collect this award on behalf of our club. A lot of club members have

worked extremely hard to earn us this nomination and recognition. Our work within and for the community of Brighton & Hove through our Come & Try Days, our participation in TAKEPART and the Festival of Sport and our partnership with BLAGSS have proven our

commitment to promote our fantastic sport to the wider community and not just keep it to ourselves.

Hopefully it also justifies, to some extent, the terrific support and investment that Brighton & Hove Council and in particular Sports Development has invested in us in terms of our terrain and the potential club storehouse facilities. In my view it is extremely important that

our club continues to support Council initiatives and work in partnership with them.

Our AGM is fast approaching and I encourage all members to attend. We are a club that is run by unpaid volunteers and at times this can seem to be a thankless task for those that dedicate their times and energies. Therefore please show

your support by attending your clubs AGM on Sunday 29th November.

The EC and member feedback, ideas and issues

The EC meets on a monthly basis and we produce an agenda for and action minutes of each meeting.

If any member would like to raise an issue or present a proposal to the EC then I encourage you to do so by any of the following means :-

You can speak to any member of the EC

You can email or put in writing your issue/proposal to any member of the EC

If you wish to raise an issue or proposal in person to the EC then you should ask the Club Secretary, Pat Connolly, for the date of the next meeting and you will be welcomed to attend. What we would

ask in return is advance notice of what the issue or proposal is so that we can use the time productively to discuss and respond

If you wish to see any minutes of the EC meetings these can easily be provided to you. Just contact Pat Connolly who will arrange

What I do ask is that if you have a complaint or issue then please also think about and give consideration to how you can help improve things
