EDITORIAL

Animals love us, protect us and are unconditionally

loyal, but never forget the harm people inflict them!

They know who saves and protects them, but also

who mistreats… Litos, one of the dogs we found this

month, never forgot that he was abandoned nor the

suffering and discomfort he went through on the

streets, without food, treatment or love. He knows he

can trust us but the fear of abandonment is forever

printed on him.

The year began with a number of abandonments

NEWS of the MONTH

Bianca, after the invitation made by the city council of Sesimbra, accompanied the

municipality’s veterinarian, Dr. Liliana, on her visit to two local schools: the school

Navegador Rodrigues Soromenho and the school EB1 JI of Pinhal do General. Children

naturally love animals and feel a healthy curiosity regarding all things, and so they posed

a lot of questions. They loved to know how we save animals, their needs and the way they

thank us, among other things. We must put our faith in children and give them a sense of

citizenship so that, when they get to the adult age, they become responsible and

respectful men and women towards all species and nature.

wihtout precedents and three of the found animals died. It is always a great loss for us

and the feeling of impotency is always huge. Despite our efforts we are not always able to

arrive in time to save a life… But we have to look ahead and think positive for those we

fight for every day, so that they may have a chance of having a comfortable life and be

happy. After all this is why we work for and put ourselves in to!

Every help is precious and all of those who want to participate actively on animal welfare

are welcome.

The Administration of Jumbo Alfragide invited us to be present at their market for a

collection of donations and food, and we accepted it. Thanks to all who contributed for the

organization, volunteership and donations, we managed to collect hundreds of kilos of

food for the more than 250 animals living at the shelter. It was, undoubtedly, a tiring but

rewarding weekend.

Bianca thanks all of you in the name of our animals.

WE WERE ABANDONED.. .

http://bianca.pt/english | http://bianca-pet-rescue-adoption.blogspot.com

Bianca was formed almost 10 years ago and (unfortunately) we know by heart all the

excuses people come up with to give their animals: health problems, job transfers, new

houses, divorces, etc. But in fact, for those who love animals, there is no reason in the

world that could lead them to abandon their animal.

Our shelter is not the perfect home for any animal. We bring them to the shelter

(hopefully) temporarily, give them a safe place to heal and be cared for, while trying to

promote a responsible adoption for each and every animal. A responsible adoption

because, if someone lacks the conditions to adopt, they shouldn’t do it. The animal may

become stressed, psychologically damaged and his future life may be impaired.

If you want to join our cause, you may visit us on Saturdays and find out more about us

and our work. All help is welcome.

If you can and want to adopt, please send an

email to [email protected].

If you cannot adopt but want to help, know

that you may sponsor. This way you will be

providing an extra welfare to an animal.

Know more at http://bianca.pt/english or

TIPS

The parallel evolution of men and their

pets brought benefits to both. Nevertheless

the people lifestyle reflects not only in

their health but also on their pets’ health.

Nowadays we have animals suffering from

obesity and several other diseases that

result from environmental aggressions,

the same that we are subjected to.

And so we recommend you to take you pet

to the vet not only when he is sick.

By performing routine exams you may be

avoiding an illness and improving your

pets’ life expectancy and quality of life.

Don’t just take care of your health.

Remember your four legged friend!

had been through. . . He has only 5 or 6 months

of age but already knows what suffering is, and

even so he is still very sweet and affectionate.

His skin was very fragil and just by curling up

on a blanket he started to bleed.

We took him to the veterinary and he had to be

hospitalized. The diagnostic was a mange

caused by demodex mites, which has a difficult,

expensive and long treatment.

But Mister will recover and have his second

chance. He’s still at the hospital but his

recovery is already notorious.

Mister at the vet.

Mirelena arrived at Bianca in an

unbelievable condition, and we thought

she would not make it. She had taken such a

strong blow to the head that her skull was

deformed.

She had an impressive open wound, hard to

look at. Initially she was calm and reserved

but as her trust grew up she revealed her

energetic, happy and playful side.

Besides the deformation on the top of the

skull, which is still visible, Mirelena is very

healthy and elegant.

She is still young and deserves a chance.

Adopt her!

Mister was found by a volunteer

on a Saturday, while walking

some of our shelter’s dogs. His

physical and psychological

I’M A VOLUNTEER

M s . E r i c a A l m e i d a

http://bianca.pt/english | http://bianca-pet-rescue-adoption.blogspot.com

My name is Erika Almeida, I’m 27 years old and I’m a

biologist. I come from a family that has always loved

animals, and my mother and sister also volunteer at Bianca.

I have had dogs for whole my life, since the time I was born,

in Brazil, until now in Portugal. I also have birds, turtles,

guinea pigs… I’ve always been surrounded by animals and

cannot imagine my life any other way. It ended up

influencing my professional choices because I’ve always

wanted to work on an area related to animals and nature. I

had already heard of Bianca for quite some time but it was

just recently that I decided to visit the shelter with my

mother, and bring some food and blankets. That was when I

decided to volunteer there. And it was the best choice I

could make. I was motivated to be a volunteer from the time I got to the shelter. I was really

impressed with everyone’s sympathy, either people or animals. I have been in other

similar places but in none of them was I so welcome.

The dedication of the people working there, regarding animals’ hygiene, health, needs for

caress and attention, also impressed me. In a shelter where so many animals live it is

amazing how everything is so clean! And my will to contribute to the shelter’s

improvement while animals wait for a family, help in socialization of dogs that otherwise

wouldn’t be adopted, give them some of the love they need and help with the dogs’ walks

so that they may get some exercise time outside the shelter, drove into being a volunteer.

There is always work to be done and every help is needed.

There are many episodes that touch us, in a positive or negative way. But seeing dogs

arriving at the shelter, abandoned by the owners to die, being received with all the love

they deserve and that the former owners were not able to give, and seeing them so

thankful for the second opportunity they were given (unfortunately not all of them get to

have it) is an outstanding thing.

In Portugal there are many people that are not ready to have pets. They do not have the

notion of the responsibility one must have when decides to adopt. Animals need attention,

food, health care, caress, playful moments, etc. While for some of these needs time is all

we need to have to give in dedication to our animals, for other we have to have money. And

all of this drives some portuguese people to abandon their animals after a while… And

because of that, the adoption of an animal must be a well thought attitude… If people

think that they don’t have the conditions for adopting it is better not to do so. Abandoning

an animal is one of the worst things one can do. He will never understand while suddenly

he is living on the streets and has never seen his human friends again… Fortunately, in

Portugal, there are also some people that collect those animals and give them the care and

shelter that were taken from them overnight.

I would like to leave here an invitation for everyone to come and visit Bianca’s shelter and

meet the wonderful animals that live there. They are super friendly animals, always

thankful for the attention and care they receive every day. If you have time and possibility

come and spend a morning or an afternoon at the shelter, and you won’t regret that.

I FOUND A HOME. . .

It is always a great joy to see an animal being adopted. An adoption should

always be a conscientious, well though and voluntary act. And that is why at

Bianca all adoptions are carefully considered.

This way we try to assure that the animals are in good hands, that they will

have a family for their entire lifes and will be loved, cherished and respected

as a member of the family that feels, reacts and suffers like all of us. And even

with all this some animals are still returned.

Remember, if you cannot adopt there are other possibilities for you, like

sponsoring. In this case, you are actually helping without taking the animal

into your home. You may walk your sponsored animal, take him to the vet, etc.

They thank that!

IN MEMORY OF. . .

N I L ONilo was one of those frustrating yet common cases: he lived in a

home until he became an hindrance and was cruelly abandoned.

He was an extremely old Cocker Spaniel and his physical

condition inspired extra care because he was very thin and

depressed. We could see the sadness in his eyes! Unfortunately

he did not make it and died at the vet. It was a very sad ending for

him. Hope you may be happier now sweet Nilo.

P A C OPaco appeared at a cat colony near Sesimbra’s harbor in mid

August. He was obviously used to live in a home: he was very

sweet and had a collar. But he had been wandering in that place

for several months. Some volunteers realized that Paco was sick

and handed him over to us, hopping he could be saved.

Unfortunately his condition was very critical and he died shortly

after being hospitalized. We know that he was cherished and love

in the end of his life. Rest in peace Paco.

I V A N

Ivan lived at the harbor until the day he was hit by a car. The

shock was very strong and Ivan suffered several fractures. We

took him to the vet immediately, and tried to save him but, sadly,

he did not resist and died that night.

May you rest in peace Ivan.

P U P P Y

At the end of this month we found two puppies, a female and a

male. The male was almost dead, and sadly did not make it. He

died even before we got to the Hospital. The girl, was

hospitalized and is recovering. The slimness of these babies was

baffling. They must have been without food for weeks! How is

this possible? Everyone who saw them started crying. We were so

sad of not being able to save this poor friend. Rest in peace.

While on holiday in Portugal, Mike Gibb (a playwrighter based in Aberdeen Scotland

whose many works include "Outlander - The Musical") was horrified by the many stray and

abandoned dogs, most of whom displayed horrific signs of neglect, mistreatment and

starvation, and shocked by the fact that there was no one to care for them except charities

run by volunteers. And so on his return home he decided to set up "Friends of Bianca", a

group established with the purpose of supporting and raising funds for Bianca

Association throughout the English speaking world. He has created the Scottish Charity

Friends of Bianca. Every penny donated through Friends of Bianca goes directly to the

charity in Portugal. Friends of Mike in Canada and USA are developing events also to

support Bianca. Bianca's animals now have new friends in Scotland, Canada and USA. We

thank for that.
