Data Calling: Transforming an Organisation into an Insight-Driven Business

Data, Analytics and Technology are just the start of a transformation into an insight driven and user centric organization. Addressing the elements of decision making, the integration with Business Strategy, Organisational structure, processes and tools issues, and the obvious cultural change is a complex effort. That complexity increases when you add to the mix a major acquisition, a significant enterprise re-organization, leadership changes and new competition in your category.  Our small strategic team has facilitated this transformation in a company with over 300 million customers in 200 countries. Come and join as I share some of our learnings

Insights from Big Data: Interaction, Design, & Innovation

In recent years, our ability to process large amounts of data has increased significantly, creating many opportunities for innovation. Having large quantities of data, however, does not necessarily turn into actionable insights that make a difference for users in consumer applications. In this talk I will give a quick overview of some ways in which “big data” can be used in industry, with a particular focus on Human-Centered approaches to innovation. In particular, I will discuss how the combination of qualitative and quantitative methods can be of benefit.

Paul Milne is an IT Strategist with over 20 years experience in operations, support and architecture. As BI Strategist at eircom he is responsible for creating the vision that will take Business Intelligence beyond the function of running reports for Finance to being an enterprise-wide business enabler. He has used his experience across IT Application Architecture to formulate how BI will pervade all of the mission critical systems to make the enterprise more agile with a sharper focus on data integrity, customer experience and, ultimately, profitability. His background includes management positions at Lotus Development (IBM), Frame Technology (Adobe) and Symantec.

The Nine Laws of Data Mining

Every day we create an immense quantity of data, so much that the 90% of the data in the world today has been created in the last two years alone. This give companies a huge opportunity of getting better insights of their customers, but it also presents an important challenge into how to effectively unlock useful information from a big data set. Data mining is a business process to turn data into insights. While CRISP-DM provides an excellent description of the data mining process, it does not explain “why” it is the way it is. In the "9 Laws of Data Mining" I examine the underlying nature of the process with examples of each from my experience.
