4 Pillars of CLIL

Core integrated components of CLIL are the 4C’s: Content,

Communication, Cognition, Culture

Content: curricular subjects apart from languages

Communication: learners are encouraged to produce subject

language orally as well as in writing and to participate in meaningful

interaction.

Cognition: thinking skills, including LOTS (Lower Order Thinking

Skills) and HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills)

Culture: learners are encouraged to think of themselves as part of

a larger group in society and to respect how others live and learn

“Connections: Content” in every unit. The curricular subjects covered

in Big English are: Art, Geography, Math, Music, Physical Education,

With Around the World Connections, students learn about different cultures and countries.

In Content Connections, students encounter text from academic areas such as social studies, science, and math. Content vocabulary is highlighted.


Students then follow the model to create their own writing.

Models and examples of writing are broken down and explained in an easy-to-follow format.

Values lesson related to the theme of the unit lets students apply language they’ve learned.


Now, students show what they have learned in the unit.

I Can checkboxes help students assess their own learning.


Checkpoint lessons consolidate material from the three previous units and help train learners in Assessment for Learning techniques

Students review key language from the previous units and compare it with their current knowledge of that language.

The Get ready task helps identify any gaps in learners’ knowledge of key language points so that teachers can focus review as needed.


The Get set and Go! tasks allow learners to consolidate and use the new language in pair and group activities featuring cut-out materials.

Students have fun with a mini-portfolio section, and then reassess their understanding of the key language points from the previous group of units.
