Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Con-ference has matured into a competitive leader incollege athletics, actively pursuing excellence onthe field of play and in the classroom. The league’sgrowing presence as an NCAA Division I athleticsconference is evident by athletics accomplish-ments on the national stage, innovative marketingand media partnerships, increased television pack-ages, and quality athletic competition while inten-tionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletics and leadership development of each stu-dent-athlete. This has evolved into the confer-ence’s mission of “Developing Leaders throughAthletics.”

The Big South Conference was formed on Au-gust 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (thenBaptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwelland Augusta President George Christenberrybegan recruiting members into the Big South, re-ceiving initial commitments from Augusta,Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolinaand Winthrop.

One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton wasselected as the league’s first commissioner andcontinued to solicit new members. His efforts ledto the additions of Armstrong State, Radford andUNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than therequired six members to constitute an official con-ference. The Big South’s first year of competitionwas in the fall of 1984, and in September 1986,the Big South Conference was granted full-fledgedNCAA Division I status.

During its infancy and prior to securing auto-matic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big Southmade early strides in earning at-large berths inseveral national postseason events, including vol-leyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf.

In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced theretiring Dr. Singleton as commissioner, and in1990, the league received its first automatic bid –receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAABaseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven

years of leadership, the conference implementedits public relations and compliance programs, andintroduced its first-ever men’s basketball televisionpackage, featuring the Big South competingamong some of the finest teams in the nation.

In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replacedSasser as the league’s third commissioner, and inhis 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallan-der has been instrumental in aggressively promot-ing the conference to new levels. The conferencehas enjoyed record levels in marketing revenueduring the past several years, he has brought tele-vision coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in confer-ence history, as well as increased national televi-sion exposure to the league as a whole throughaggressive and unique television packages.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South de-veloped and initiated its first long-range strategicplan, re-affirming the league’s vision as a distinc-tive athletic conference committed to the qualityof institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football asa championship sport, which came to fruition in2002, and has solidified conference membershipwith the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webband Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return ofcharter member Campbell University.

Kallander’s long range vision has also includedtechnological advancements, as the conference in-troduced its first live event video streaming in2005 and has since expanded its video offerings tomore than 600 events annually through a partner-ship with the member institutions, as well as thecreation of several online and social media plat-forms.

In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Confer-ence has experienced monumental growth andsuccess in nearly every sport. During this time, theconference has had two individual national cham-pions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reachedthe “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basket-

ball and baseball, has received national Top 25rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track& field, and men’s golf, had an individual selectedto play in the NCAA Singles Championship fourtimes in addition to the first men’s tennis doublesat-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’sgolfer in the country, has had the nation’s topscoring men’s basketball team three-consecutiveyears as well as the national men’s basketballscoring leader twice, received an at-large playoffberth in the Football Championship Subdivision in2006, and had an institution finish fifth in theNCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the confer-ence’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event.

In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the onlyconference nationwide to have an at-large partici-pant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), ateam in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Bas-ketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed inthe NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program hasbeen a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in justthe fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence.

The conference’s tagline, “Developing Leadersthrough Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 inconjunction with the conference’s 25th Anniver-sary. The league also honored its heritage with theTop 25 “Best of the Best” moments in league his-tory from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment inthe Big South’s first 25 years.

The conference’s on-field accomplishmentshave been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of conference student-ath-letes are named to the Big South’s PresidentialHonor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0grade-point average, and the league has had morethan 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-cen-tury of existence.

2010 BIG SOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP

The entire 2010 Advance Auto Parts Big SouthWomen’s Basketball Championship will be con-tested at the Millis Athletic Center on the campusof High Point University. It will be the secondstraight year High Point has hosted the Big SouthWomen’s Basketball Championship. UNC Ashevillehosted the single-site tournament at the JusticeCenter in both 2007 and 2008.

This year’s championship will begin with fourquarterfinal contests on March 12. The quarterfinalwinners will head to the semifinals, to be playedMarch 14. The women’s championship game willbe played on March 15. The game will determinethe recipient of the Big South’s automatic bid tothe 2010 NCAA Division I Women’s BasketballChampionship.

The 2010 Big South men’s basketball championwill be crowned the week prior to the women’stournament. Unlike the women’s championship, the men’s event features an emphasis on home-court advantage. Six out of seven Big South Men’sBasketball Championship contests a season ago

were played on home courts. Radford attractedmore than 7,000 total fans to the Dedmon Centerfor the Highlanders’ semifinal and championshiptilts.

The 2010 Advance Auto Parts Big South Men’sBasketball Championship will begin March 2, withfour simultaneous quarterfinal matchups at thehigher seeded teams’ arenas. Winners will advanceto the semifinal round on March 4, which will beplayed at the site of the Big South regular-seasonchampion.

The highest remaining seed will earn the rightto host the Big South Championship title game, at4 p.m. on March 6, LIVE on ESPN2 as part ofChampionship Week. The winner will emerge withthe conference’s automatic bid to the 2010 NCAATournament.

The format for the Big South Championship hasevolved over the years. From 2004 through 2006,the No. 1 seed in both the men’s and women’schampionships had the ability to play all three ofits tournament games on its home floor. The Lib-

erty women’s basketball team took advantage ofthis stipulation, capturing Big South titles No. 8, 9and 10 at the Vines Center.

Previously, the Big South men’s and women’sbasketball championships have been played intheir entirety at a single location. The RoanokeCivic Center hosted the 2001 and 2002 champi-onships, the 1999 and 2000 tournaments wereheld at the Asheville Civic Center and the VinesCenter was the site of the 1997 and 1998 confer-ence men’s and women’s tournaments.

The 1997 and 1998 tournaments at the VinesCenter produced some of the highest-attendedcontests in Big South Conference history. Over7,000 fans attended the 1997 men’s tournamenteach day, including 8,343 spectators for the semi-final round. Meanwhile, 4,921 fans saw the semifi-nals of the 1998 women’s championship and5,041 came the next day for the championshipgame.
