For designer Betsy Stires, accent chairs are a decorating treat. They’re mobile pieces, easy to move from room to room, and one of the quickest ways to spruce up a dull space and express personal style. They add fl air.

“If a room were an outfi t, the accent chairs would be the jewelry” said Stires, who owns an interior design fi rm in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, called Frog Hill Designs. “It’s the spark. It pops from the rest of the palette but also ties it all together.”

Traditionally, accent chairs are intended to be used only when extra seating be-comes necessary, so they tend to be equal parts functional and decorative. That makes them a fun piece to shop for and a great way experiment with color and texture. But they also can have deceptively large footprints, particularly those that rock or recline. In apartments and condos where space is precious, fi nding one that’s stylish, comfortable and lean can feel impossible. But it isn’t.

“Accent chairs add so much fl avor and character to a room, some-times you only need one to do something big,” Stires said. “It can make a statement.”

Stires, 52, recently moved from

a large home in Great Falls, Virginia, to a 2,300-square-foot Alexandria apartment. Her new home is still large for an apart-ment, so the downsizing wasn’t terribly dramatic, but accent chairs and poufs have been vital for when guests come over, she said. “If you only have room for one big upholstered piece, you have to get cre-ative.”

The fi rst step to shopping for accent chairs is determining your spatial con-straints. Lisa Scroggins, the retail market manager of Room & Board in Washington, said those in small spaces should look for chairs that fall between 25 to 32 inches wide. And although the market is fl ooded with vastly oversized armchairs, the standard seat depth hovers around a generous 20 to 22 inches.

The next step is to fi gure out what purpose the chair will serve. Is it purely a statement piece that will be pulled out twice a year for parties? Or will friends use it every week when they come over to watch the game? More recreational chairs should be durable, so shop for fabrics such

as leather and canvas. Chairs destined for life in the hallway can be more artsy; think of them like practical sculptures you can sit on when you get in a pinch.

Erin Raines, a designer in Brooklyn’s Park Slope neighborhood, said living-room seating arrangement is a predicament for the majority of her clients at Space 3 Interiors. “Needless to say, I’ve done a lot of research on small accent chairs.”

She has a few go-to chairs for problem-solving. West Elm’s Button Slipper Chair ($399) measures 25 inches wide and straddles vintage and modern design, “so it works with a variety of decor styles,” she said. Room and Board’s Celeste Swivel Chair ($749) is a client favorite, and because it’s low to the ground, it can visually open or close a seating area depending on which direction it faces. Ikea’s Poang chair ($69-$149) is far and away the “household staple,” she said, because it’s affordable, comfortable and lightweight.

Several years ago during a National Association of County Agriculture Agents meeting, I was

standing in a large grove of cherry trees on the south shore of Lake Ontario. This mid-sum-

mer period was the harvest sea-son, and luscious red fruit fi lled the crowns of the trees.

I was thinking it must have taken thousands of bees to produce all this fruit, and so I asked the grove

manager where their bees came from. To my surprise, he said they were trucked in from Florida.

Honey bees are critical to agriculture and global food production, pollinating more than 30 percent of the food we eat, particularly the fruits and vegetables necessary to a healthy diet. Bees contribute signifi cantly to the American economy, pollinating up to $15 billion of crops each year.

But bees are in trouble, with diseases, other insects, mites and perhaps additional prob-lems that have not been conclu-sively identifi ed. These factors threaten their ability to meet the food demands of a growing world population. Such diffi cul-ties go largely unnoticed by most people, but the threats to bee populations should be of concern to every American.

The western honey bee is not native to North America but was introduced from Europe, dating back as early as 1622.

In recent years, the general population has become conscious of a subspecies of the African honey bee that can interbreed with European subspecies resulting in a bee that is highly defensive when the colony is disturbed and a bee

Comfort is often the No. 1 priority when young people shop for seating, which explains why L-shaped couches and big, cozy recliners are post-college staples. But they’re

not practical choices for those renting less than 1,000 square feet. To that end, many manufacturers and retailers offer furni-ture lines geared toward city-dwellers. Even La-Z-Boy loyalists have hope. Shortly after the recession, the Michigan-based company updated its catalogue to offer sleeker pieces for urban-ites. The Midtown Reclin-er ($849) measures just 33 inches wide and 21 inches deep, and trades the

traditional chair’s pillow-like silhouette for clean, straight lines. And for those willing to splurge, higher-end retailers such as Design Within Reach and Tho. Moser make slender, modern lounge seating (such as Thos. Moser’s Ellipse chair, $2,475, and ottoman, $675, in cherry).

Of course, creative seating solutions don’t have to come in the form of accent chairs. Poufs, ottomans and benches can

double as extra seating. Many offer hidden storage and even have wheels to make them easily mobile. Stires has a clover-shaped George Smith pouf in her living room that’s on wheels so she can shuffl e it around as needed. Scroggins said customers often piggyback benches up against the back of a sofa and pull them around when guests come over. Says Scroggins: “If you shop right, one piece can do the work of three.”

Q: A friend has two end tables that were given to her years

ago. They have markings on them saying “ada Francesco Hurtado Valencia, Spain.” She said that all his furniture has signature gold balls in the designs. She is interested in selling the tables but has no idea of how much they are worth.

A local Ocala dealer she contacted offered her $5,000 sight unseen for them, but during a follow-up phone call she did not feel comfortable because he was in such a rush to get the tables. I searched the internet for her, and the only information I could fi nd was that there is a manufacturer in Valencia, Spain, that has been in business since 1940. Are you at all familiar with this furniture, and if so, how much are these vintage pieces worth?

Q: I have an older low-profi le, one-piece

toilet I want to replace with a new high-effi ciency model.

But because the tank height is so low and I have shelving above the tank, I will need to install another low-profi le toilet to fi t the space.

With the combination of a very low tank and the new toilets that use less water, I am concerned about fl ushing power.

I don’t want to take out the shelving, so any ideas on getting a high-effi cien-cy/low-profi le toilet with some extra fl ushing power?

A: This is a very

common question for toilets with very low tanks, and assisted-fl ushing technology is available

for many new high-effi -ciency toilets, including low-profi le toilets.

The term assisted fl ush means basically what it sounds like.

The gravity fl ushing power is assisted with some help from another power-generated force.

One of the most common assisted-fl ushing systems for toilets is called air-pressure assist.

This is where com-pressed air is stored in a special fl ushing vessel along with the fl ushing water.

When you press the

lever, the compressed air gives the fl ushing water an extra push that can be very helpful for toilets with a low-profi le tank.

Bottom line: With a new assisted-fl ush, low-profi le toilet you can keep your existing shelves in place without shelving the idea of getting a new high-effi -ciency toilet.

When writing an-swers to readers or reports for clients, I often

abbreviate the term for Heating, Venting & Air Conditioning down to HVAC. From my obser-vations, it appears that most people only think of the heating or the air conditioning portion of the reports and ignore the venting portion, the most important part of an HVAC technician’s job.

An improperly vented fossil-fuel-burning appliance can be deadly.

The byproducts of combus-tion are carbon monoxide (C0) gas as well as other unpleasant gases and

moisture. C0 is colorless, odorless and tasteless, but when the concentration of C0 is greater than one hundred parts per million (100 ppm), the C0 becomes toxic by combining with the body’s hemoglobin to form carboxyhemoglobin in the blood, preventing the hemoglobin from releasing oxygen to the body’s tissues.

People exposed to low levels of C0 poisoning may suffer headaches and dizziness similar to the fl u. Extended low-level exposure can be toxic to

the heart, the nervous system and other vital organs. Exposure to high levels of C0 is deadly.

Everyone should have at least one C0 detector in each bedroom and another near the fuel-burning appliance or appliances. There are safety codes for installers to follow when venting fl ue gases, but I also have seen fi re hazards caused by other installers’ careless-ness with range hoods.

If the hood is non-vent-ing or is a recirculating type unit, any experienced technician can install these units. It’s when the hood is designed to vent to the exterior that I fi nd problems. Either the venting pipe ends in an attic or the hood vents into a wall cavity. A vented range hood must vent to the exterior all the way through the roof or

through a sidewall.Over time as the fan is

used, grease will be pulled into the fl ue or cavity where it will accumulate, ready to fuel the fi rst accidental range top fi re, and it will blow like a torch through the wood struc-ture of the home. Also check the clothes dryer vent pipe from either a gas or electric dryer. The clothes dryer pipe must be a smooth-walled metal pipe where possible and vented to the exterior. Lint is highly fl ammable and is estimated to be respon-sible for more than 100 injuries annually, result-ing in at least fi ve deaths and costing more than $35 million in damages.

A few Nell Hill’s de-signers and I share resolutions for making your home more beautiful in 2015.RESOLUTION NO. 1 FROM MARY CAROL: STOP HOARDING

After many years living in our beloved old home in Atchison, Kansas, Dan and I have offi cial-ly moved to a bungalow near Kansas City. I loved my majestic fi xer-upper and will always treasure the fabulous memories we made there, but I was more than ready to downsize, to have less home to take care of. As we got ready to move, I was blown away by how hard it was to go through all our stuff, deciding which things would go with us

to our cottage and which would have to fi nd a new home.

I had no idea I was such a hoarder! As I stood in my basement and looked at the tubs and tubs of

accents I had saved through the years, I wished I had undertaken this task earlier and purged on a regular basis. But when I was done emptying out my closets and garage and basement, I felt fabulous and free. During 2015, I’d encourage you to set aside some time to review the items in your home. If something is no longer of use to you, or no longer brings you joy, give it to some-one who needs it. RESOLUTION NO. 2 FROM MARY-CHRIS-TINE: FIND AND EMBRACE YOUR OWN STYLE

As an interior designer, Mary-Christine has seen lots of trends come and go. While it’s fun to incorporate new looks you love into your decor, her advice is to always be true to yourself and embrace a style that suits you. In 2015, she encourages you to discover your

signature style. First, she says, fi gure out what

you need from your home. For example, since she works with so much color and pattern every day as a designer, she needs her own home to be very simple and serene. You may be just the opposite. Next, fi ll your home with things you really love. You want to look forward to walking through your door every day and drinking in the furnishings and accents you’ve used to feather your nest. RESOLUTION NO. 3 FROM SCOTT: WHEN DECORATING, DON’T JUST STOP WITH THE FURNITURE

Scott says he’s noticed that when people redo spaces in their homes or move to a new home, they usually start the decorating process by selecting the uphol-stered pieces they want to include in the room. The style and fabric they choose does a great job of setting the tone for the space. But that’s only the fi rst step, Scott explains.

Too often, he sees people stop with their redesign once the new sofa is in place. Then, they aren’t quite satisfi ed with the results, and aren’t sure why. There’s an easy explanation, he says. The room isn’t done. A well-designed

space includes much more than great furniture.

All the other elements in the room, like the artwork, accesso-ries, rugs and lighting, are essential for completing the design. They work together to give the room its individuality and dramatic fl air, to ensure the space is a refl ection of you.RESOLUTION NO. 4 FROM NICOLE: ADD A BIT OF LUXURY TO YOUR HOME

Everyone loves indulging in a little luxury now and then. And Nicole says 2015 is the year to explore ways you can add some glitz to your everyday life through your home decor. Even if you like things casual and simple, a dot or two of glam will give your spaces a spark of new energy.

Nicole suggests picking one little space, maybe a corner of a room or one piece of furniture, and adding a touch of luxury there. Perhaps it’s tossing a pillow corded in a yummy velvet onto your bed, sofa or favorite chair.

Gold accents are super hot right now, so you will fi nd lots of options for adding sparkle to your home. You will be sur-prised by how much a dash of gold warms up your spaces and

makes you feel pampered.RESOLUTION NO. 5 FROM KRISTEN: EXPLORE THE POWER OF STRIPES

When she’s designing gor-geous custom beds, Kristen blends a variety of fabrics and patterns to add dimension to the grouping and give it visual interest. Stripes are always a part of the mix.

Stripes belong all over the house, Kristen maintains. Drapes done in a striped fabric add height to a room.

Want the window to look larger? Include a striped fabric going horizontally at the base of the drape. Still not convinced? Then cover a piece of furniture in ticking, like I did for my new lake house!

HOLMES: Insects and mites are causing problems for the honey bee population

that is able to pursue over long distances individuals who have disrupted a colony. The insect’s aggressive nature is cause for caution, but it is not the “killer bee” it has often been portrayed to be.

The University of Florida has information on the Africanized honey bee and suggestions for management. This publication, ENY-141, may be obtained at the UF/IFAS website: edis.ifas.ufl .edu.

Problems for U.S. bee popula-tions have been on the rise in recent years. Causes of concern

include insects and mites, such as the varroa mite, introduced into the United States around 1987. This organism feeds on body fl uid of developing bees resulting in deformed wings.

Another mite is the acarine or “tracheal” mite, a U.S. problem since 1984. They infest the airways of adult bees, causing death by suffocation.

Nosema (an insect that causes dysentery), small hive beetle (introduced in 1998) and wax moths are other insects that pose problems for bee colonies. Diseases occur as bacteria, fungus and viruses, and these, too, are in abundance for bees

including American foulbrood, the most widespread of these, in which larvae ingest bacterial spores in their food.

These compete with the larva for nourishment. Fungal diseases include chalkbrood, a disease affecting the gut of the larva, and stonebrood, a disease that causes mummifi cation of the brood. The paralysis virus, cloudy wing virus and scabrood virus also are disease problems for bee colonies and hive managers.

In late 2006, beekeepers from around the nation reported higher-than-normal bee colony losses in a phenomenon that has

come to be described as Colony Collapse Disorder, or CCD. In this occurrence, a hive may appear healthy, but within a few weeks it will exhibit no adult bees, almost as if the hive has been abandoned.

Bodies of workers are not observed in the hive or in areas surrounding the hive. Honey that is left is not taken by scavengers. Researchers advise that CCD has affected about 30 percent of honey bee colonies nationwide. Combined with increased concerns over disease, mites and insects, CCD, and its inexplicability, has raised great concern about the

future of beekeeping and by logical extension the future of food production.

The UF Entomology Depart-ment offers a Bee College with beginner and advanced topics for anyone interested in starting their own hives. The class will be held March 6-7 at the Whit-ney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience in St. Augustine. Talk show host Ellen DeGe-neres, known for her love of fi xing up and selling houses, has listed her adja-

cent units in a Westwood condo building for close to $16 million.
