ON THE MATThe University of Iowa wrestling team competes at the 2021 Big Ten Championships on Saturday and Sunday at the Bryce Jordan Center in Univer-sity Park, Pennsylvania. The two-day event begins Saturday at 9 a.m. (CT). Session II starts Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Session III begins Sunday at 11 a.m., followed by the fi nals at 3 p.m. Sessions I, II and IV will be televised by BTN. Session III is streamed at BTN Plus. Times are subject to change.

AUTOMATIC QUALIFIERSThe Big Ten Championships is one of seven NCAA qualifying tournaments across the country. The NCAA has awarded the conference 76 of the 266 automa c qualifying bids for the na onal champi-onships in St. Louis on March 18-20. The Big Ten was allo ed more bids than any other conference. The league will have fi ve auto-ma c qualifi ers at 197, six automa c qualifi ers at 149 and 285, and seven at 125, 133, 141, 157, 165, 174 and 184. A er all of the qualifying events have conclud-ed, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Commi ee will meet in-person to select the remaining 64 at-large qualifi ers. All weight classes will consist of 33 wres-tlers. Wrestlers that meet two or more of the at-large considera on standards will be eligible for at-large selec on Minimum standards include: .700 over-all winning percentage; .700 Division I winning percentage at the weight class; Top 33 Coaches Ranking (taken a er the qualifying tournament); One win against a wrestler who qualifi ed via a pre-allocated spot or AQ; Qualifying event placement one below pre-allocated spots; Seeded in top 16 during 2020 selec ons; Finished in top 8 during 2019 Championships.

BIG TEN COACH OF THE YEARTom Brands has been named Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year four mes in his career, more than any other coach in school history. Brands was recog-nized in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2020 following con-ference tles. Iowa has fi ve Big Ten championships under Brands (2008, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2020).

WRESTLER OF THE CHAMPIONSHIPSince 1989, the year the Big Ten record book fi rst recognizes the award, nine diff erent Hawkeyes have been named Wrestler of the Big Ten Championships. Alex Marinelli won the award in 2019 a er winning the 165-pound bracket. He shared the award with Penn State’s Jason Nolf. Head coach Tom Brands won the award in 1989 following his 126-pound confer-ence tle. Associate head coach Terry Brands won the honor following his 126-pound Big Ten tle in 1992. Brent Metcalf is the only Big Ten athlete to win the award twice (2008, 2009).

BIG TEN TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONSThe Hawkeyes’ 115 Big Ten champions have won a total of 203 conference tles. There have been seven four- me, 18 three- me and 31 two- me winners. The Hawkeyes have won 36 team tles, twice as many as the next closest school (Illinois, 17). Iowa won 25 consecu ve conference championships from 1974-1998.

BONUS POINTS AND ALL AMERICAN DOMINANCEThe Hawkeyes have nine All-Americans in their postseason lineup that have a combined record of 35-3 in 2021. Spencer Lee, Jaydin Eierman, Alex Marinelli and Michael Kemerer are all three- me All-Americans. Aus n DeSanto, Kaleb Young and Jacob Warner are 2019 and 2020 All-Americans. Max Murin and Tony Cas-sioppi earned All-America honors in 2020. The group has scored bonus points in 24 of its 35 wins.

TOURNAMENT EXPERIENCESpencer Lee, Alex Marinelli and Michael Kemerer are compe ng at the Big Ten Championships for the fourth me. Lee won the 125-pound tle in 2020. He was runner-up in 2019 and placed third in 2018. He is 8-2 in

three tournament appearances. He has scored bonus points in all eight tournament wins: three pins, three major decisions and two technical falls. Marinelli is the two- me defending 165-pound champion. He is 8-3 all- me in the tournament. He was 3-0 in 2020 and 3-0 in 2019, when he was named co-wrestler of the championships. He placed sixth as a redshirt freshman in 2018, going 2-3 in fi ve matches. Kemerer placed runner-up at 174 pounds in 2020 a er compe ng at 157 pounds in 2017 and 2018. He missed 2019 with an injury. He is 6-3 all- me at the conference championships. He was runner-up as a red-shirt freshman in 2017, going 2-1 overall. He placed sixth in 2018, going 2-1 before injury defaul ng from the tournament. Four Hawkeyes, Aus n DeSanto, Max Murin, Kaleb Young and Jacob Warner, are making their third straight Big Ten tournament appearances. Murin placed seventh and fi h, respec vely, in 2019 and 2020 at 141 pounds. He is making his fi rst appearance at 149. Tony Cassioppi is making his second straight tournament appearance. He placed third at heavyweight in 2020, picking up a pair of falls and a 4-1 record. The Hawkeyes enter the Big Ten Championships with two wrestlers making their Big Ten tournament de-buts. Sophomore Nelson Brands (184) is making his postseason debut and senior Jaydin Eierman is making his fi rst appearance at the Big Ten Championships a er winning three MAC tles from 2017-19.

4 HAWKEYES EARN TOP PRE-SEEDS FOR B1G CHAMPIONSHIPSFour University of Iowa wrestlers are on the top line of the 2021 Big Ten Championships pre-seeds released Tuesday by the conference offi ce. Spencer Lee (125), Jaydin Eierman (141), Alex Marinelli (165) and Michael Kemerer (174) are all seeded No. 1 at their respec ve weight classes for the 2021 Big Ten Championships set for Saturday and Sunday at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pennsylvania. Iowa’s four top seeds lead the conference. Penn State (two) is the only other school that received more than one. The Hawkeyes also picked up three No. 2 seeds, more than any other school. They include Aus n DeSanto (133), Max Murin (141) and Kaleb Young (157). Jacob Warner (197) and Tony Cassioppi (285) are both seeded third. Nelson Brands is the No. 9 seed at 184. The complete tournament brackets will be released Friday a ernoon following the Big Ten Conference coaches mee ng.

QUICK WORKTop-ranked Spencer Lee has outscored his opponents 38-0 in seven minutes and 12 seconds of mat me. Lee opened the season with a fall in 1:21 against No. 11 Liam Cronin (Nebraska). He ended his match against No. 9 Patrick McKee (Minnesota) with a fall in 1:53. He pinned Illinois’s No. 13 Jus n Cardani in 2:27. He led 6-0 in his fi rst match, 14-0 in his second match, and 4-0 in his third match before securing pins. He led 14-0 at Purdue before winning in 1:32. Since the start of the 2019-20 season, Lee has outscored his 22 opponents 272-18. He has scored bonus points in 20 of those 21 matches. Lee is making his third Big Ten Championships appearance. He is 8-2 all- me at the conference tourna-ment with bonus points in all eight wins. He was won 27 consecu ve matches.

NEW KID IN TOWNSenior Jaydin Eierman is the top seed in his fi rst Big Ten Conference Championships. Eierman transferred to Iowa in 2020 from the University of Missouri, where he was the 2019 MAC Wres-tler of the Year and 2017 MAC Freshman of the Year. He won three MAC tournaments from 2017-19, pos ng a 9-0 mark with eight bonus-point wins. Eierman was a three- me All-American at Missouri. He placed fi h at the NCAA Championships as a freshman, fourth as a sophomore and third as a junior in 2019. He used an Olympic redshirt in 2019-20. Eierman has a career record of 94-11. Eierman is 5-0 in his fi rst season as a Hawkeye. He won by 8-4 decision against No. 7 Chad Red on Jan. 15 in his Hawkeye debut. He has since won four straight, the last three by fall.

MARINELLI AIMS FOR THE HAT TRICKSenior Alex Marinelli is a two- me defending Big Ten champion, winning the 165-pound tle in 2019 and 2020. In 2019, he was named Big Ten Co-Wrestler of the Tournament. He is seeking to become the 19th three- me conference cham-pion in school history. Joe Scarpello was the fi rst Hawkeye to win three Big Ten tles. He won four from 1947-50. Scarpello is one of seven four- me champions. T.J. Williams is the last Hawkeye three- mer. He won three tles from 1999-2001. Tom and Terry Brands are among the 18 three- mers. Terry won three straight from 1990-92. Tom won his fi rst as a freshman in 1989, and then again in 1991 and 1992). Marinelli is the top seed at 165. He is making his fourth appearance at the conference tournament. He has an 8-3 record in three appearances and has won his last six matches at the tournament. Marinelli is 2-0 overall and has won his last eight matches da ng back to the 2020 regular season.

A LOOK BACK AT 2020 BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPSThe top-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team won the 2020 Big Ten Cham-pionship on March 8 in Piscataway, New Jersey, scoring 157.5 team points and crowning three individual champions. Alex Marinelli defended his 165-pound conference tle, and Spencer Lee and Pat Lugo became fi rst- me champions, leading Iowa to its fi rst outright team tle since 2010 and its 36th conference tle overall. Iowa’s team tle was the 36th in program history, more than any other school in the Big Ten. Iowa’s point total (157.5) was its highest since 1995 (185). Tom Brands was named Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year for the fourth me in his career, more than any other coach in school history. He was previously

recognized in 2008, 2009 and 2010 following conference tles. Iowa has fi ve Big Ten championships under Brands (2008, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2020).

BIG TEN TEAM RECORDSIowa holds the record for most individual champions in a single conference cham-pionships with nine in 1983. The Hawkeyes had eight in 1985, and crowned seven in 1981, 1982, 1984 and 1986. The conference record for most falls in a tournament belongs to the Hawk-eyes, who recorded 12 pins in 1979. The fastest fall by a Hawkeye belongs to Bart Chelesvig, who pinned Keith Bollman in the 1992 quarterfi nals. The largest margin of victory by a champion also belongs to Iowa. The 1983 Hawkeyes scored 200 points, 118.5 more than second-place Michigan State (81.5).

REGULAR SEASON B1G CHAMPIONSThe Big Ten Conference announced Feb. 23 that Iowa and Penn State are co-champions of the 2021 conference regular season. The top-ranked Hawkeyes fi nished the dual season 5-0. Iowa has won or shared the Big Ten regular season tle 11 mes in the last 14 years, and 13 mes since the conference star ng recognizing a dual meet cham-pion in 1999. Iowa won the tle outright in 2000, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2020, and shared the tle in 2003, 2014, 2016, 2019 and 2020. The Hawkeyes have 10 undefeated conference seasons since 2006-07, head coach Tom Brands’ fi rst year.

BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS @ PENN STATEThe last me Penn State hosted the Big Ten Wrestling Championships was 2009. The Hawkeyes won the tle, their second under Tom Brands, with 141 points. Illinois was second with 113.5. Brands was named Big Ten Coach of the Year and Brent Metcalf was named Outstanding Wrestler of the Championships. Metcalf (149) and Dan Erekson (285) won conference tles.

IOWA’S BIG TEN HONORSThe Iowa wrestling team has earned several individual Big Ten honors since they were ini ated in 1986. Eleven Hawkeyes have been named Big Ten Wrestler of the Year, nine have been named Wrestler of the Championships and six have been named Fresh-man of the Year. Tom BrandsHead Coach University of Iowa, 1992

Four-time Big Ten and two-time NWCA Coach of the Year Tom Brands is in his 15th season as head wrestling coach at the University of Iowa in 2020-21. A 1996 Olympic gold medal-ist and member of wrestling’s Hall of Fame, Brands is only the eighth head wrestling coach at the University of Iowa. The former Hawkeye wrestler was a four-time All-Ameri-

can and three-time national champion (1989-92) at Iowa. He has a 236-23-1 (.909) overall and 113-10 (.917) Big Ten coaching record at Iowa. He has a 253-43-1 (.852) career mark and a 114-12 (.905) record at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. In 14 completed seasons as Iowa’s head coach, Brands has led the Hawk-eyes to three NCAA and fi ve Big Ten team titles, crowning 12 NCAA champi-ons, 19 Big Ten champions and 82 All-Americans. Iowa has had 129 Academic All-Big Ten recipients, including a school-record 17 in 2019-20. The Hawkeyes have qualifi ed 128 wrestlers for the NCAA Championships in the last 14 years, sending the entire 10-man lineup in 2010, 2014, 2015, and 2020. Iowa has won or shared the Big Ten regular season title 10 times in Brands’ 14 seasons. Iowa set the national collegiate dual meet attendance record of 42,287 when Iowa defeated top-ranked Oklahoma State, 18-16, on Nov. 14, 2015 at the Grapple on the Gridiron at Kinnick Stadium. Iowa has led the nation in at-tendance in each of Brands’ 14 seasons, setting an NCAA all-time attendance average of 12,568 in 2019-20. Brands has twice been named NWCA National Coach of the Year. He was fi rst honored in 2008 after leading the Hawkeyes to their fi rst NCAA team title since 2000 and their fi rst Big Ten team title since 2004. He was later recog-nized in 2020, when the top-ranked Hawkeyes won Big Ten regular season and tournament championships and entered the NCAA Championships as the favorite to win the team title. The tournament was canceled due to the CO-VID-19 pandamic.

Brands was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2020. He is the only coach in program history to earn the award four times. Brands served as head coach at Virginia Tech University for two seasons (2005-06), recording a 17-20 dual mark. In his fi rst season with the Hokies, Brands led the team to the 2005 regular season Atlantic Coast Conference title, set a school record for dual meet wins (16) and had a school-record fi ve wres-tlers qualify for the NCAA Championships. Prior to taking the helm at Virginia Tech, Brands was an assistant coach at Iowa for 12 seasons (1993-2004). He helped the Hawkeyes to a 177-27 dual record, seven NCAA and eight Big Ten team titles, while crowning 23 NCAA champions, 73 All-Americans and 36 Big Ten champions. He was named the National Wrestling Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year in 2000. In 2004, he was one of three coaches for the U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team, participating in Athens, and in 2016 he was named a volunteer coach of the United States Olympic team in Rio. Brands also served as assistant coach for the U.S. Freestyle World Teams in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2013, 2014, and 2015. He was named Freestyle Coach of the Year by USA Wrestling in 2002 and 2003. He has coached a number of other U.S. teams in international competition. As a competitor, Brands won the 1996 Olympic freestyle gold medal at 136.5 pounds in Atlanta, Georgia. He also won a gold medal at the 1993 World Cham-pionships in Toronto, two World Cup gold medals (1994, 1995) and was the 1995 Pan American Games champion. He won four U.S. National titles (1993-96) and made four straight U.S. World or Olympic teams (1993-96). Along with his twin brother, Terry, Tom was named 1993 USA Wrestling Athlete of the Year, the 1993 John Smith Outstanding Freestyle Wrestler, and 1993 Amateur Wrestling News Man of the Year. He was inducted into wrestling’s Hall of Fame in 2001. Brands was a four-time All-American at Iowa (1989-92). During his Hawkeye career, he won three NCAA titles and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the 1992 NCAA Championships. Also a three-time Big Ten champion, Brands won 95 percent of his matches at Iowa. His career mark of 158-7-2 includes an unde-feated season in 1991 (45-0). The Sheldon, Iowa, native was born April 9, 1968. He earned his B.S. de-gree in physical education from Iowa in 1992. He and his wife, Jeni, have three adult children, Madigan, Kinsee and Tommy.
