Blue in Green to Play at Holiday Party

Blue in Green is a contemporary jazz trio fronted by Keith Watling on guitar and saxophone. Its emphasis is the classic

jazz repertoire spanning early, middle and late periods. You can expect to hear classic swing tunes, groov-alicious Latin tunes featuring the works of Jobim, Bonfa, Fuentes, et al., as well as the work of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and original pieces by their leader, Keith Watling. When a Hammond B3 organ is used, the group delves into the grooves created by such masters of that genre as Melvin Rhyne, Jimmy Smith, and Jack McDuff. All in all you can look forward to a night of great jazz put forth by accomplished musicians who play from the heart.

You can also visit their Web site for further info and to listen to their tunes:

http://www.keithwatling.com

See page 9 for details on the Holiday Party and reservation form, and pages 6-7 for your Board elections’ ballot.

model variety. In addition to the BMW M3 Coupé, the BMW M3 Convertible and the BMW M3 Sedan have been on offer since spring 2008.

All in all, BMW M GmbH offers seven current models. The portfolio ranges from the three body types of the BMW M3 and the BMW M5 Sedan through to the models of the BMW M6 Coupé and BMW M6 Convertible. bi

BMW M GmbH on Stable Growth Course: World-wide Sales 50% over ’07Munich, Germany

In the second half of the business year 2008, BMW M GmbH continues to hold a stable growth course. The significant increase in sales as compared to last year have resulted

in 22,340 vehicles being sold worldwide as of November 2008. This means that BMW M GmbH has exceeded the previous year’s equivalent figures (14,092 units) by over 50 per cent. A major contribution to this was the success of the new BMW M3, which has shown continuously increasing sales figures since its market launch and which is now offered in three body variations. With its attractive product range and world-wide presence, BMW M GmbH has succeeded in increasing its sales figures and market share despite the current difficul-ties in the market environment.

As long ago as August 2008, the worldwide sales figures of BMW M GmbH reached a figure of over 16,150 units, thus surpassing the total figure of last year (16,128 units) early on. In the months that followed, this positive development actually continued. In November 2008 alone, some 1,900 BMW M automobiles were delivered. “The fact that our dealers were able to supply significantly more vehicles than the average of the last nine months even in such dramatic times for the world economy demonstrates the fascination and attraction which BMW M automobiles exercise on our customers,” explains Ludwig Willisch, President of BMW M GmbH. The unique driving experience offered by a BMW M model is still a persuasive factor for customers who wish to express a passion for top performance in the choice of their vehicle. As usual, the final figures for total sales in 2008 will not be available until the annual report has been completed. Nonetheless, the currently available figures suggest that 2008 will be one of the most successful years for BMW M GmbH in its 30-year history of vehicle production.

Worldwide it was especially the new BMW M3 which caused a sensation during the course of 2008. The high-performance sports car sold almost twice as well in its first year of pro-duction than its predecessor model within the same period. The penetration of additional target groups, and the associat-ed increase in sales figures, was in part due to the extended

...Voted Yet?

Have you voted yet? Even though our upcoming elec-tion is a little smaller than that other election, it would be nice to see some participation from our members!

Vote by mail or bring your ballot to the holiday party. We still have some activities planned for this year. The fall ralleye was November 2nd. The go-karting is coming up at the end of December, and of course the Holiday Party hopes to be another grand event. Your Board works hard to put together events for you to enjoy and participate in. I hope you will think about attending something new next year.

Speaking of the holiday party, this year’s event promises to be as nice as it was two years ago. We are going back to the Eisner Museum and will have Chef Jack catering. Good food, nice music, GREAT FRIENDS, what could be better? Lots of door prizes again this year, too!

We will be having our planning meeting in January for the 2009 events schedule. As always, we extend an invitation to all Club members to offer up suggestions for activities. Find one of your board members at the holiday party if you have a new idea, so we can discuss it!

We send our congratulations to our Board member Chris Fredette and his wife, Christina, on the birth of Ptolemy Franklin. Everyone is doing well and they even made a brief visit to the December Board meeting.

There will be no regular Board meeting in January. The holi-day party is our January meeting where we will announce the election results and install the new Board.

If you haven’t made your plans yet, our holiday party is in a few weeks. Please look inside this issue of the immer or on the Web site for a registration form. Hope to see you ALL at the party! bi

Mustafa Downshifts...Be afraid of the slow car during snow

Here in Milwaukee, we are left with a single newspaper; the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Their online presence is decent and provides a good source of local informa-

tion to those seeking it. The Web site also features a regu-lar readers poll, and the topics are varied, mostly light and whimsical, offering questions like “What’s the best way to eat thanksgiving leftovers?” or “Does your family celebrate St. Nick’s day?” Needless to say, you have to click on the poll to see what your fellow citizens are thinking on that particular day, and I have made it a regular part of my online routine to check the jsonline.com reader’s poll. The current one is relevant to us BMW fanatics (or some of us anyway): “What annoys you more on the roads during a big snowstorm?” The current tally, after more than 10,000 votes stands at 70% people driving too fast, and 30% too slow.

I voted in the minority, and so did Laura by the way, though that should come as no surprize to anyone who knows her. Unless you’re driving a snow plow for a living, you could not seriously see people driving too fast as a problem during a snow storm. For one, these people are surely equipped with the latest driv-ing aids in their cars to beat the elements. Alternatively, they are so completely unaware of the physics of moving objects on frictionless surfaces that they are soon to remove themselves (and their vehicles) from the roads. Either way, these people are hardly your problem, since they pose no appreciable risk to you by either being safe or in the ditch.

Which brings me to the driver who is so slow in the snow as to cause a great risk to you and your BMW. These people, unlike their more cavalier all-season-radial-shod brethren, are actually aware of the fact that they are NOT PREPARED for the conditions at hand. They are the people who under-stand the need for better traction but have somehow not yet convinced themselves that the solution is to purchase a set of snow tires. Oh, they know: no stopping, no going, no turning, and yet, they must drive in the snow... The solution: SLOW... As if the physics of slow motion over frictionless surfaces is any different from fast motion over the same surface.

Next time you see a slower than average car in the snow, you’re looking at a driver who knows that he or she is unpre-pared. At least they know they need help. bi

Badger Bimmers’ 2009 Driver Education Events

During 2009, the Badger Bimmers BMW CCA chapter will hold four driver’s education events. Three of these events will be held at Blackhawk Farms Raceway near

Rockton, IL. The fourth event will be our annual OktoberFAST event at Road America. A joint event with CGI at Gingerman Raceway will also be scheduled. The date for the Gingerman event will be available after the first of the year.

The three Blackhawk events are scheduled for Monday, June 1st, Monday, July 13th and Friday, August 7th. Registration for these events will open on March 1st, 2009. Registration will be handled using www.motorsportreg.com. All of the Blackhawk events will be joint events with the Milwaukee Region of the Porsche Club of America. These events will be run using the rules for Badger Bimmer DE events.

OktoberFAST will actually occur in October in 2009. The dates for the event are Friday, October 9th through Sunday, October 11th. As usual, Friday will be reserved for instruc-tors and advanced students. Registration for OktoberFAST will open on May 1st, 2009 and will be handled using www.motorsportreg.com. Last year’s event filled up about five weeks before the event.

Other Road America DE EventsIf you are interested in additional events at Road America you may want to check out these following two:

Friday, May 8th and Saturday, May 9th — Milwaukee Region PCA (Scheduled on Friday and Saturday to avoid Mother’s day on Sunday.)Monday, August 31st and Tuesday, September 1st — Badger Audi

Both of these events will use www.motorsportreg.com for registration. I’ve been to both of these events many times and found them to be very well run and a lot of fun.

Annual Holiday PartyThere’s also information on the Web site and in this issue (page 9) about our annual holiday party and general member-ship meeting.

QuestionsIf you have questions about any of these events send me an e-mail. bi

BMW Group CO2-free at UN Climate Change Conference Poznan, Poland and Munich, Germany

Using hydrogen as a fuel, mobility generating practically no CO2 emissions is now very much a reality — and one that delegates at the UN Climate Change Conference

COP 14 taking place in Poznan, Poland can experience for themselves. A total of 21 BMW Hydrogen 7 hydrogen-pow-ered cars are providing the official shuttle service at the most important climate change conference of the year. The BMW Group is also presenting a pair of electrically driven MINI E cars at the event.

The BMW Group is using these two innovative models to showcase the possible shape of sustainable mobility in the future. A pilot project involving well over 500 electrically powered MINI-based cars has been launched to explore the potential of electromobility in both the United States and Europe. The primary aim of the trial is to analyse how electri-cally powered vehicles are driven in everyday conditions. To this end, the BMW Group is placing the MINI E models with fleets as well as members of the public. The idea is that the data generated will help the company to channel relevant information from practical experience into the ongoing series development of an electric car. Added to which, the study will also look into the technical and economic challenges presented by the technology, in particular those relating to the lithium-ion battery.

The MINI E may develop nothing in the way of local CO2 emissions, but it delivers driving pleasure aplenty. Acceleration from 0–100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.5 seconds and a limited top speed of 95 mph equip it perfectly for every-day use, as does a maximum range of 156 miles. The BMW Group has made two examples of the MINI E available for test drives in Poznan by way of demonstrating this technol-ogy. The BMW Hydrogen 7 has already furnished evidence of its everyday practicality in countries around the world. Indeed, 100 examples of the car have together racked up more than two million miles worldwide since the launch of the hydrogen fleet in late 2006. The BMW Hydrogen 7 is fit-ted with a hydrogen combustion engine, which can be fuelled with either petrol or the cleanest option of all: hydrogen. In hydrogen mode, the BMW Hydrogen 7 also emits virtually no CO2 (below 5 grams/100 kilometres), yet delivers 260 hp – and thus proves that sustainable mobility and “The Ultimate Driving Machine” can go hand in hand. All of which means that the delegates in Poznan are enjoying familiar reliabil-ity and comfort in the fleet of 21 BMW Hydrogen 7 official shuttle vehicles at the summit, but with an extra dose of environment-friendliness.

The use of hydrogen and electrical power ensures that the cars themselves emit practically no CO2. The BMW Group is a leader in the development of these two technologies. Indeed, experts in Munich first began researching and build-ing battery- and hydrogen-powered cars back in the 1970s. The BMW Hydrogen 7 shuttles in Poznan run on climate neutral hydrogen. If hydrogen is produced out of renewable energy through electrolysis, CO2 emissions can be cut by up to 90% further up the supply chain. The key for both hydro-gen power and electromobility lies not only in the ability of the vehicles to run CO2-free, but also in the development of supply chains and infrastructure to provide them with clean hydrogen and electricity. This represents both a political and an economic challenge. The BMW Group is seeking discus-sions on open questions related to hydrogen and electro-mobility at both the climate summit in Poznan and in regular stakeholder dialogue. bi

Second Harvest Update

Second Harvest is a food bank. More than 172,000 people depend on food supplied by Second Harvest’s Milwaukee warehouse. Through their warehouses in

Milwaukee and the Fox Valley, they distribute more than 11 million pounds of food a year to more than 1,100 pantries, meal programs, and other nonprofit agencies that serve near-ly 235,000 people in the eastern half of Wisconsin. Second Harvest is the official charity of Badger Bimmers. Your gift is supplemented by the national BMW Club.

Thanks to our generous members, Second Harvest dona-tions have continued to come in. We have one more goal: to exceed the $3000 mark for 2008. We need about $500 to do this. The best opportunity will be at the annual dinner.

The need for food donations is especially high this year. Pantries are operating with no reserves for the first time as the number of unemployed and uninsured families rises. Most food pantries have had a five to seven day reserve, but they are now not able to keep up with demand. Please bring canned goods or non-perishable items such as soup, tuna, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, or rice. Cash or your personal check will also be welcome. If you write Badger Bimmers on the memo line of your check, your donation is counted as part of the Club’s gifts, and you will get a receipt for your charitable tax deductible gift. Or you can visit the Second Harvest Web site. Please call them directly to make a donation by credit card. bi

Election 2009CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENTDarice (Darcy) Yench

I have been a member of the Badger Bimmers Chapter since June 1997. I have worked as social chairperson for the club, organizing the annual year-

end party from 1997-2003. I have been the registrar and organizer of OktoberFAST at Road America from 1997 – 2006 and worked on our driving events at Blackhawk Farms. I was first elected to the Board of Directors in 1998 and served as Vice President from 1999-2003. I was Secretary in 2004 and became our Speed Events coordinator when the National office developed the position. I have helped to organize numerous social events such as the Car Club night at Pandl’s and also organized our first BIMMERSTRASSE tent at the ALMS race in August 2006 at Road America. Our club has grown to over 1,000 members and stayed there for several years now. With a lot of help from many members, our club will host Octoberfest in August 2010 which

I will chair. I am anxious to continue adding to the energy and potential of this Club if you re-elect me as your President. bi

CANDIDATE FOR BOARD MEMBERMike Clemens

Hi, my name is Mike Clemens and I’m a candidate for one of the open club board positions.

I have been on the board for the last 2 years. I have been a member of the club since 1997. My main interest is in the driver schools and car control clinics that the club sponsors. I have run the Blackhawk and Road America events over the last several years. At the 2008 Road America event we had 200 people attend the event. That was the largest number of people to ever attend one of our driver schools. If you’ve been to these events, you have seen me running the driver and instructor meetings. If elected, I would like to work with other board members to stage the BMW Foundation Street Survival course next summer. I will also continue working to make our drivers schools even better than they already are. I have also volun-teered to help with running the national BMW CCA Oktoberfest event in 2010. Thanks, Mike Clemens bi

CANDIDATE FOR BOARD MEMBERChris Fredette

Well, I have a baby on the way as I’m typing this... Not that it should affect your vote.

I’m running for reelection as a Board member. I’ve been a BMW CCA member since 1995 and I was on the Board back in the 90s, too. In my time in the club I have participated in virtually every type of club event. I’ve been to Oktoberfest(we will be hosting this event in 2010, if you haven’t heard!), 6 Nurburgring schools in Germany, Club rallys in the US and Germany, and more track driving schools than I care to count. More recently, I have run the car handling clinics for the Club and the off-track exercises at Road America for over 6 years.

My plans for the next two years, if elected, will mainly be to deliver a top-notch Oktoberfest to Wisconsin and make sure the Club is being fiscally responsible in the slowing economic climate. We are expecting to see a decline in school attendance, so I see protecting the Club’s funds as a top priority. bi

OK gang, it is time for me to run for an office again. After about 5 years as the Membership Chair, I have resigned that position and am now running for a gen-eral Board post. I have been a long term member of Badger Bimmers (since the mid-80’s) and with some time to do the work. Over the years I have served as a Board Member for a few years and also as Club Secretary.

In addition, I have been a student, instruc-tor, grid worker, track registration worker at Road America and Blackhawk Farms. Auberlen, Hand to Pilot Rahal Letterman Racing’s BMWby Nancy Knapp Schilke — Motorsport.com

Rahal Letterman Racing is ready for the 2009 American Le Mans Series’ LM GT2 competition with their new BMW M3, which has been undergoing development

and testing by BMW Motorsport in Europe this year. BMW is ready to hand the new generation M3 over to the capable hands of the team and two of the top sportscar racing driv-ers of BMW products.

When RLR marks their return to ALMS at the Twelve Hours of Sebring, the two racers named today by team co-owner Bobby Rahal will be known to the fans and fellow competi-tors. Bill Auberlen and Joey Hand will be in command of the M3 for the 2009 season.

BMW — under the banner of Team PTG — earned the 1999 team title which they repeated in 2001 under BMW Motorsport. With the work behind the scenes already com-pleted, BMW will have three of their top racers, Jorg Muller, Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus, shakedown the M3 at Road Atlanta and Sebring this month.

“BMW of North America is very pleased to have Bill and Joey on the team,” said Martin Birkmann, BMW of North America Motorsport Manager. “Their experience with setup, GT racing and their raw speed will support the competitive-ness of BMW’s GT2 campaign in the ALMS. I have known both of them for many years, and besides being fast, they’re both a lot of fun to work with. I am looking forward to seeing them pedal our newest BMW M3 racer.”

For Auberlen, the first race of 2009 will be an historic event. The 40 year-old will have the honors of racing in every generation of the BMW M3 over his career in both Grand American Road Racing series and ALMS. Auberlen has also competed in the prototype classes in both North American sportscar series. With six sportscar championships, he is a formidable competitor.

“My emotions are really high. I feel like I am going back home to my family. To be a part of racing at the level that BMW brings is a dream for any driver,” said Auberlen. “I am really looking forward to being teamed up again with Joey. It’ll be exciting to be on a team headed by a legend and rac-ing icon like Bobby Rahal. I am really looking forward to 2009.”

Auberlen and Hand have teamed up as partners-in-racing over the years, including the last time that BMW took on the challenge in the Le Mans-based series in North America. bi

Olympic Champion Usain Bolt Tests the BMW M3

T he world record in the men’s 100 meters stands at 9.69 sec-onds, whilst a BMW M3 Coupe is capable of reaching 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. Starting today, three-time Olympic cham-

pion Usain Bolt knows what it feels like to travel at both speeds because the 22-year old Jamaican was able to experience the out-standing driving characteristics of his future sports car while driving it to its limits at the BMW Vehicle Test Facility in Aschheim near Munich. “It was a fascinating experience,” comments the athlete par excellence, following almost three hours of BMW Driver Training. He was greatly impressed by the tremendous power and the full sound of the engine. Usain Bolt had obviously thoroughly enjoyed driving the 414 horsepower sports car across the handling course in wintry road conditions — fully aware that he was taking the vehicle to its physi-cal limits — under the professional guidance of a BMW driving instructor.
