Boston Bimmer - Spring, 2019

From the Editor’s Desk

Dear Boston Chapter Member,

It’s hard to believe it, but it’s finally here! No, not the new 8-Series – though, that is something to be equally excited for. What I happen to be referring to is Spring and, more specifically, the warm weather that has seemed to elude Greater Boston for the better part of the season. We’ve patiently watched those two numbers in the high temperature column go from starting with fours and fives, to sixes and sevens, and now recently even eights! We all know what that means – it’s time for vacuuming and tire shine, long drives with the top down, and shattering lap times at the track. Everything’s better when it’s warmer, right? The Sox have been playing better too, so there’s some more proof (not that you needed any).

Despite the warm weather’s reluctance to appear, it’s been a busy first couple months of 2019 for the Boston Chapter. We’ve had several driving, tech, and autocross events and a terrific general meeting graciously hosted by BMW of Norwood. We have more great events like these scheduled throughout the Summer, so be sure to check The Ultimate Calendar on the Chapter website for upcoming events and information.

Speaking of events, are there things you as a member would enjoy attending, but don’t see on the calendar? Bowling nights? Cookouts? We have Cars & Coffee, what about Brats & Bimmers? The Chapter is always looking for volunteers to suggest and help plan events that they feel could be fun and exciting. You don’t need a degree in event planning – we just want to hear from you! With Summer close at hand, there is a lot of potential for some really great social events. In order for the magic to happen, though, we need to know what the people want. On the other hand, if there is an event you already see on the calendar and would like to volunteer at, let us know!

In addition to helping with events, the Chapter is also in search of volunteers with writing, photography or technical skills.

Please direct all inquiries, thoughts, and suggestions to: [email protected]

Shifting gears, one concept I’m excited to introduce as Editor is “Bimmer of the Month.” As was mentioned in the Winter edition of the Bimmer, we are transitioning the magazine to a more electronic existence. With this comes the ability to feature more rotating, current content – that is, posting content soon after the events they cover occur, as opposed to posting a “recap” each time the Bimmer is published. By adopting this approach, we can feature a “Bimmer of the Month” on the website for all to view.

Boston Bimmer - Spring, 2019 Think you have a Bimmer that’s worthy of some publicity? Email a picture of your car to: [email protected] The requirements are simple: it must be a clear picture and it must be of a BMW! I will select a winner and a runner-up.

That’s about it for now. Feel free to drop me a line with any questions, comments, or if you just want to talk BMW.

See you at the track,

Eric Richards

A Message from the Board

Boston Bimmer - Spring, 2019

As you may have noticed we have recently launched our new Boston Chapter BMW CCA web site. Now that this first step in our redesign is complete, it will enable better access from mobile devices as well as better interaction within our Facebook page.

My Boston

There are still some features that are a work in progress on the new site, such as the My Boston and classifieds sections. These will become much more dynamic in the near future, enabling better presentation and detail. When ready, we will be reaching out to you again to create/edit your 'My Boston' profile and make sure we have your email preferences set up correctly.

Boston Bimmer

This new site is now the engine for our Bimmer magazine as we move toward a full electronic delivery via email. This, again, makes identifying an electronic profile very important so that we can keep you up to date on upcoming events. Of course, with the addition of our new editor, as well as new systems in development for delivering the Bimmer, we appreciate your patience as he (and our webmaster) becomes familiar with the new technology.

Ultimate Calendar

You will notice that the calendar format is different and currently has only a few events listed. Rest assured, the Driving, Tech and Social events teams are hard at work scheduling events for 2019 which will be populated as soon as they are available. We expect to have sixty or more events this year. You can check out the new calendar at www.boston-bmwcca.org/events.

Page 6: Table of Contents - Boston Chapter BMW CCAboston-bmwcca.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Spring-Bimmer-201… · Boston Bimmer - Spring, 2019 From the Editor’s Desk Dear Boston Chapter

pg. 4

Boston Bimmer - Spring, 2019

The new Ultimate Calendar has the ability to view events by month as a default, or you can use the box in the top right corner to switch the view to a list. Each of these viewing options also allows you to search events by date or keyword.

Suggestions

When we started this process we had some definitive ideas on what we wanted from a mechanic’s perspective. We wanted to fix a number of inefficiencies and ensure security protocols were in place. With all that being said this is your website, the window to the Boston BMW CCA and it is our hope that it can evolve with input and suggestions from our members. To that end please contact the webmaster at [email protected] if you have any ideas for new elements or improvements that we can add over time.

Thanks again for your patience, and welcome to the new Boston Chapter BMW CCA.

April General Meeting at BMW of Norwood April 3, 2019

by Matt Bagedonow

It was a great turnout for the first General Meeting of the year held at BMW of Norwood on April 7th. Special thanks go out to Alex Archer and Lisa Miles for hosting the meeting and for providing food and refreshments. For those who arrived early, BMW of Norwood arranged for drives in many of the new models. Judging from the reaction of the members, the new 3 Series is a great improvement in ride feel over the current F30. The new Z4 was a special favorite. The evening kicked off with our special guest speaker Peter Bourassa. Peter has truly been around the horn in the business and automotive world. As an “everyman” enthusiast, Peter has owned, driven and attempted to repair American, British, German and Italian sports cars and motorcycles. He currently drives a 308 Ferrari with over 200K miles and a Ducati Sports-Tourer; all are highly modified…mostly by necessity. He has had a successful career in motorcycles as a sales manager for Ducati-Laverda and Suzuki motorcycles, and later in the automotive parts aftermarket with companies like Champion Spark Plug and Standard/Blue Streak Ignition Products. The group was particularly interested in his stories about the unusual, off the beaten path resources and people that Peter has found over the years. These technicians and artisans do special high quality one-off work for repairs and restoration at very reasonable cost. To spread this information and other automotive knowledge, he has started a website and MMR Community Newsletter at: www.motorsportsmarketingresources.com. The meeting wrapped up with a raffle of three grill badges. The three lucky winners were Andrew Brown, Dan Lee and Santo Wiryaman.

We hope to see you at our next general meeting!

Matt Bagedonow is Membership Chair of the Boston Chapter.

Undercarriage Tech Session at North Shore Motor Werks April 27, 2019

by Justin Cicerone

I recently attended an Undercarriage Tech Session at North Shore Motor Works. It was not only a good social event, but a good day for our vehicles as well to get a look underneath, where us driveway mechanics can’t always get routine inspections. I was really impressed with North Shore’s shop, staff, knowledge, and care. James, North Shore’s owner, was sure to give every attendee a personal lookover of their vehicle and discuss some of the nuances of the differing chassis and engines brought in. On my ‘09 335i, I discovered a leak on

my oil filter housing not detectable from the engine compartment, and a strut that did not survive New England winters. I would certainly attend one of these events again and will for sure visit North Shore.

Justin Cicerone is a contributing Boston Chapter Member.

Here’s what other attendees had to say about their morning at North Shore Motor Werks:

“I had a very good experience at the subject tech session. James and his crew were very professional and attentive to my concerns. I am very appreciative for that. A few of the previous mechanics were not so attentive because they know I do (did) some of my own maintenance. The only down side was that there were no other members there to interact with. either the event was poorly attended or the schedule did not provide any overlap. I enjoy the camaraderie with other members, comparing notes and BMW experiences.” -Frank M.

“I had the first appointment of the day and was greeted by Jim Hart and his staff. The shop is expansive, meticulous, and with several lifts. They have all the latest tools and equipment to handle just about any BMW service and repair. My 550i was put up on the lift right away and they proceeded to check everything out front to back. The inspection revealed that the rear differential bushing was worn and needed replacement. Fortunately, I had purchased an extended mechanical breakdown policy which was nearing its expiration date this month. The repair would have been $800 out of pocket if I had not gone to the tech session and gotten the problem diagnosed. That was an hour well spent. Plus, they had great coffee and donuts there! I’ll be using North Shore Motor Werks for my servicing going forward.” -Bob C.

Boston Bimmer - Spring, 2019

“The guys at North Shore Motor Werks were extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. I felt welcome in their shop and enjoyed the experience.” -Ed R.

“Went great, the guys there were very friendly and welcoming. It was obvious they were really into BMWs and talking cars with the participants. Although it’s obviously a strategy for increasing business, there was never any hard sell or attempts to push people to service their cars there. Very enjoyable experience.” -Drew F.

“It was my first time at this shop. The owner and techs there were extremely friendly, welcoming, and informative. It was a bit of a recon event for me in search of an indy shop. Would highly recommend North Shore Motor Werks and plan on returning.” -Jonathan S.

South Shore BMW Undercarriage Tech Session May 4, 2019

by John Sullivan

Pictured: The Sales Staff at South Shore BMW.

It was a wet morning for the Undercarriage Tech Session hosted by South Shore BMW in Rockland, MA, but the weather did not dampen the spirits of the members attending. I saw several people purchasing some Life Style/Boutique items from Parts Manager Steve Powers. I was also told that members were purchasing some BMW parts for themselves due to the 25% discount offered that day.

Tom Toppan, the Service Manager, was greeting participants as time allowed. I was told by an early participant that he cleared an air bag recall as part of the inspection. It’s amazing what a key fob can tell you!

I brought my 2008 328xi coupe, equipped with a six-speed manual and an N51 engine, down for the inspection. The technician, Bob. C., found a rear brake sensor wire not attached properly and reattached it. Otherwise I received a clean bill of health on the undercarriage! I had been getting low gas mileage with the car and mentioned that fact to Bob. He mentioned several possibilities for the problem but tweaked a setting on the car. I just put a second tank of gas in the car and found that I had picked up a couple more miles per gallon.

John Sullivan is Vice President/Activities of the Boston Chapter of the BMW CCA. Here’s what attendees had to say about their experience at South Shore:

“It was a really great session. Bob C. the tech was friendly and answered my questions and gave me good information about the condition of my car.” -Sergi B.

“Very successful and informative session at South Shore BMW. Even while they were engaged in daily service operations, I didn't feel marginalized; in fact I would go as far as to note they took special care of us. The tech, Bob. C., went through both top and bottom side - explaining what he was looking for every step of the way. I asked questions when I had them, and at the end of the session he asked several times if I had any more questions. Absolute thumbs up - glad I participated.” -Allen Z.

“This was very good, my tech, Bob, was excellent! I discussed a few things that I was unaware of and will address them as needed, nothing that needs immediate attention. My only critique would be an area where member could gather before and after their cars have been looked at. I think this would help member get to know each other. Other than that it was very good.” -William R.

“My tech was Bob C. He pointed out some things like plastic trim work under the hood, rear diff that I should keep an eye on - nothing major - just something to watch out for in case I see it leak.” -Mohamed H.

Boston Bimmer - Spring, 2019

“I must say the guys at South Shore BMW went out of their way to accommodate the club and I. My appointment was at 9am. I was put in line, offered coffee and bagels. Bob Cahill was the technician that looked at my car. He took his time and was very thorough. Bob has been the only mechanic to work on my car since I bought it 16 years ago. He has done a superior job keeping my e36 328i convertible in optimal condition. Believe it or not, I enjoy bringing my car to South Shore BMW, I like knowing that a certified BMW technician is making sure my car runs and does what it is designed to do on the exit ramps.” -Jack O’B

“Great experience! Thanks for arranging. I had pre-ordered a conv top harness for my e46- good price after 25% off. I needed a brake light bulb which the parts guy threw in for free. For the tech session I brought in my daily driver ‘03 530i with 395k miles which I have recently manual swapped (on jack stands). it was the first time a tech (Bob C.) had looked at it on a lift since I did the swap he spent 30 minutes with me and gave it a reasonably clean bill if heath and also provided a punch list of minor maintenance items- bent wheel, suspension, possible failing water pump, etc. the service manager Tom Toppan was also quite helpful (I was first of the day) and cleared an airbag recall. Overall a great experience. I do love these tech sessions. I may bring my X5 to the Norwood event June 1.” -Mike S.

Autocross Event #2 by Susan Fenwick

The 2019 Autocross season kicked off with our first Points Event on Saturday, May 18th, under blue skies and a cool breeze in the air. The event was a great success, attended by 86 drivers who completed 8 runs each and had lots of fun.

This was a fantastic technical course designed for us by our own Rob MacAlpine. The course was a challenge for some, with numerous off-course calls throughout the day. Corner six on the course will go down in autocross history as the corner that took down even the most experienced drivers. There were a large number of new members at the event, and we welcomed many who had never driven autocross before. Our driving instructors were kept busy throughout the day, teaching the basic autocross rules of “look ahead, enter slow and exit fast.”

Live timing was down for the event, due to an unforeseen technical error. The webmaster was contacted, and the issue will be resolved prior to the next event. This issue was seen as a gift by some attendees, because it allowed them to focus on their driving instead of their standings. Overall, the autocross team could not have asked for a better day. Results can be viewed on the Boston BMW CCA website autocross results page.

Don’t forget to register for the next event on June 2nd. The turnout was great for the first event, and Event #2 is expected to fill up fast!
