After completion, our students are awarded a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree. Successful graduates may choose to continue their studies by directly pursuing a doctorate or PhD in the research field of Biomedical Tech- nologies. Foreign language competence Applicants must provide proof of their English skills which can be dem- onstrated on the basis of Internet-based TOEFL (TOEFL iBT), IELTS, Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English Test, Language certificate from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in accordance with the levels of language competence of the Common European Framework of Reference and the UNIcert System. Twenty-four places are available per year and will be awarded accord- ing to the applicant’s qualifications and experience. Matriculation takes place every winter semester via the central administration office of the university with application deadline 15th of June. To be admitted to the Master’s program, students must have completed their first degree. A ranking list is created based on the final grades or provisional final grades of the first degree. The interprofessional and interdisciplinary master’s degree program in Biomedical Tech-nologies is characterized by practice orientation and internationality.

The master program at the University of Tübingen is an excellent choice for students seeking advanced academic and application-oriented research training in emerging fields of Biomedical Technologies integrat-ing the excellent focus areas of implantology, bioimaging and nanoana-lytics/interfaces. Training is offered by experts in basic as well as clinical sciences and provide a comprehensive overview of the area.

Master of BiomedicalTechnologies

In the first year, students can choose two out of three specialization modules allowing them to tailor the program to their individual interests. The second year of the master program is flexibly organized to allow students to gain practical experience in research institutes, industry or abroad.

• Excellent study conditions in small training groups with individual contact to researchers and clinicians.

• Close cooperation with more than 40 universities all over the world, which offers the option to complete a practical work experience or to write the master thesis abroad.

• Furthermore, close interaction with companies and research institu-tes in Medical Technologies and Biomedical Technologies secures a competence-based study program, practical experiences and the inclusion of researchers from industry in lectures.

Our central goal is to prepare our students for various professional chal-lenges to allow a successful start to a career in future oriented branches of Biomedical Technologies

Implantology encompasses the development and production of both vital and avital implants. The aim of this module is to trans-fer a detailed knowledge about tissue engineering, biomaterials, reactor technology as well as interfaces between tissues and syn-thetic surfaces, biocompatibility, surface passivation and signal transduction. The scope of topics ranges from basic research to clinical trials, including the design of implants, their use in animal trials and their clinical application.

Nanoanalytics/Interfaces integrate biological and molecular nanophysics, nanotechnology, biomedical measurement technol-ogy, scanning probe microscopy, electron microscopy, nanostruc-tures, nanomechanics, label-free detection methods, scientific instrumentation and devices, transducers, electrical sensing of living cells, chip-based sensors, hard- and software development.

Bioimaging imparts deeper knowledge regarding preclinial imag-ing and clinical application, i.e. positron-emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), optical imaging (OI), computer tomography (CT), ultrasound (US) and encloses the development of the future generation PET and mulimodality imag-ing equipment.On the basis of special laboratory techniques different methods of measurement are demonstrated. For clinical application students discuss very special issues on Biomedical Technologies which are illustrated in practical sessions.

Curriculum

• Mandatory courses offer competence-based fundamental know-ledge and tools demanded from industry and clinic.

• Elective courses allow broadening the knowledge base in one of the other specialization fields.Alternatively, more technically interes-ted students can choose courses at the University of Stuttgart (max. 18 ECTS).

• Practical work experience in a research institute, in Medical Technologies companies or abroad provides the students with first valuable workplace skills, communication skills and experience in national and international teams.

• The Master thesis forms a major component of the course and entails six months’ full-time practical work in an academic or indus-trial laboratory or abroad on a novel research project. This element gives students experience in independently solving an experimental problem within the research field of modern Biomedical Technologies as well as writing an extended scientific report.
